What mechs strike you as filler to pad TROs?
>>
>In the depths of the Second Succession War, as humanity barreled toward a technological nadir, the Draconis Combine opened offensives on both the Steiner and Davion fronts, feeding ever more of its children into the ravenous maw of war. Many once-prominent samurai families, whose scions had long served the Pillar of Steel, found themselves without any living sons to carry on their legacies. A dozen of these minor noble houses, desperate for their legacies not to die with their fallen heirs, chose to train their eldest daughters in the ways of the MechWarrior. With the strong prejudice against women in the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery in this era acting as a barrier to high achievement

What's a mech that would look badass paired with a pair of Manticore tanks? I want to paint them together but don't want it to not make sense if their production years are too far apart.
>>
>>96442313
Atlas looks badass with everything.
>>
>Captain Sark Harkness is notable in several ways. First, he tends to separate from his company in battle, seeking single combat against the enemy, especially the Combine. Second, he pilots the Atlas that Ian Davion was driving when he was killed on Mallory’s World. When Harkness arrived at the Fourth Guards in 3030, the Atlas was in a warehouse collecting dust. It was considered jinxed, and no one wanted anything to do with it. He sought and was granted permission to put it back into service. Sporting a new head and cockpit, he proceeded to cut a swath through the Dragon’s best. (...) In 3047, he elected to modify the Atlas, believing that the First Prince would have wanted it to possess the most modern instruments of lethality. (FM: Davion pg.30)
>Furlow always had food, but getting her to share was a costly and uncomfortable exercise, so I wandered the warehouse, sipping my overly sweet, mostly melted drink. Prince Ian’s old ’Mech drew me like a magnet. Shivers ran up my spine as I spied the Atlas’ death’s-head in the pile. No one had repaired the damage Yorinaga Kurita’s shot had done to the ’Mech, and the First Prince. (Shrapnel #21, ZERO-TWO-ONE, set in 6 JULY 3066)
Sigh
>>
>>96442463
Given how the story is about fixing the Alliance with Ian's Atlas' Vlar 300 engine, either the FM or the Shrapnel story becomes complete bullshit, so I wonder which one has higher canonicity

Black Knight.

Brutal weapons loadout with a good mix of range brackets and spaced out well across the entire mech. You can double fist and still fire off two of the main weapons and several auxiliaries on every configuration. No ammo bins, plenty of heat sinks, good ground speed for a 75 tonner.. You can pick any era and there is a contemporary model that fits that description. The list of mechs, regardless of weight class, that can size up a Black Knight and take it lightly is a short one.

Also a rare enough mech that just seeing one is going to give you dread.

Yeah, BT has structurally sound combustibles, the entirety of an LRM except for the guidance system is made of explosives, including the entire outer surface. Those things get banged around in transit and still launch and detonate just fine. Caseless shells made of something similar should be easy peasy.

Yes, but the government you live under would prefer if you used their HouseBux™ instead so depending on your job you might be paid in those instead and probably have to pay your taxes in them. The exchange rate usually favors the C-bill though.
>>
>>96444195
Oh, and the C-bill is backed by service while the house bills are generally backed by germanium, gold, silver, gems, hopes, dreams, and other things they assure you they have fat stacks of in their central reserves.
>>
>>96444097
I bet there's a table of shit you can buy with C-bills in a Mechwarrior RPG source book.
>>
>>96444207
The service in question being to send one page of plain text from your local HPG to any other HPG in range, at Comstar's convenience (which is somewhere between once every 6 hours to once every few weeks in a big batch depending on where you are). 1 C-bill will always buy you that service regardless of anything else. Sending your message further, larger amounts of data, or as an immediate priority message all cost more. All Comstar services only accept C-bills. Most other businesses also accept C-bills since they use Comstar services anyway. Thus, C-bills have value.

Writing something silly, here to ask a couple of questions about the Atlas II. How capable is it, really? It’s loaded with the cutting-edge stuff, but the design itself in-universe I don’t know how highly regarded it is. How hard could the design carry an inexperienced MechWarrior?
>>
>>96445514
It's a good Mech, it's just not scary. Its capable of engaging targets at all ranges, but the lack of a big gun makes it less intimidating. The issue is that many assaults outperform it at any particular range: a Longbow compares well at long range, an Awesome at medium range, a Battlemaster at close range, etc.

As far as carrying an inferior pilot...well, it still has almost max armor. The ERLLs, MPLs, and LB-10X will get you favorable target numbers (ERLLs don't have a bonus, but you'll often he in a closer range bracket). You do have to watch your heat curve carefully.

Also, it's likely to be a fire magnet. In universe, it's fucking scary (at least, before 3055 or so). It's the superior, lostech version of one of the scariest Mechs around. Every single one is supposed to have gone on the Exodus, so no one has fought it enough to realize it's a Jack-of-All-Trades-Master-of-None, so they'll treat it as an Atlas BUT WORSE.

In the post-Tukayyid period, when people have seen footage of Dire Wolves and dual Gauss boats are hitting the front line, it loses a lot of its mystique and becomes a pretty solid assault. Still worthy of respect, but no longer pants-shitting.
>>
>>96445586
This is a very comprehensive answer; thank you. How does it stack up within the Clans, particularly pre-invasion? Is it just screwed under Zellbrigen, or is it like the Gargoyle, where it benefits greatly?

So I've got an idea that seems absolutely retarded but fun at the same time, I'm currently printing a mech-scale Broadsword dropship alongside two Firestarter's (non-omni version) and two Pirannah's. On a scale of 1-10, how dumb is this, bearing in mind there is no local scene to play in and no interest either.

The Broadsword is hollow and the roof lifts off for storage, but I have a feeling it'll never see play. Also, any recommendations for which variants of the mech's I should lean into? Everything up to and including ilkhan era is fair game.
>>
>>96445631
What's your fifth mech?
>>
>>96445689
No idea yet, probably something light.Puma Prime perhaps?
>>
When it comes to making a mech lance, I've come to hear that you have light lances, medium lances, heavy lances, and assault lances. I assume that means you can't mix mech classes for those types of lances?

I ask because having heard about the mercenary group Benito's Brawlers (https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Benito%27s_Brawlers), they were only a medium mech lance in 3071. I assume that means medium mechs only?
>>
>>96445800
You can have any mech in any group formation you want. You can even have combat vehicles as a supporting part of a lance if you want, like the Capellans often do. Forming lances by weight or movement profiles just helps to keep things logistically and tactically simple.
>>
>>96445800
No, you can mix weight classes. It just designates what the majority of the lance is. A Vulcan, Assassin, or even a Phoenix Hawk would not be out of place in a light lance, provided that it was the only medium mech.
>>
>>96442171
Your what?
>>
>>96446059

But would it still be called a medium lance if one mech surrounded by medium mechs is either a heavy mech or an assault mech?
>>
>>96445800
Mixed classes is very common. A light lance can be lights and mediums, a medium lance 2 mediums, a light, and a 60 or 65 tonner. A heavy lance could have a 4/6 assault or even a Panther.

They classifications are general, not restrictive.
>>
The struggle between the Inner Sphere houses has no episodes that can compare with the highs and lows of Tukayyid, Operation Bulldog/Serpent, "You dare refuse my batchall?", Leo Showers getting Shiloned, the Victor Steiner-Davion/Kai Allard-Liao gay romance, or Luthien, Twycross or Wolcott, except possibly the scene of Maximillian Liao and the wedding plates or the Steiner-Davion incest civil war. You need to go back to the Amaris coup and the SLDF exodus to find a similarly epic period with characters and incidents worthy of the era
>>
>>96446149
Yeah, that is kind of the appeal of the Succession Wars
>>
>>96446128

>They classifications are general, not restrictive.

Then what is considered an assault mech lance if you don't need to be exclusively assault mechs?

>>
>>96446128

>>
>>96445599
>How does it stack up within the Clans, particularly pre-invasion?

Badly.

Is it just screwed under Zellbrigen, or is it like the Gargoyle, where it benefits greatly?

With good versatility and lots of crit seekers, the Atlas II works best as a team player. It slots well into almost any assault lance, but is mediocre in duels because even though it can speak up a lot of damage, and can deal okay damage at any range, it doesn't excel at any range either. Low speed means that the enemy is likely to be able to at the range of the engagement, paying to their own strengths.

On the other hand, there's a lot of armor and perfectly respectable damage at every range, so it's not useless at any point.

Still, for early Clans I don't think it matches well against other Royal assaults, and it's completely outclassed by property Clan Mechs. The Clan equivalent of it thematically would be the Dire Wolf, which just curb stomps it.
>>
>>96446296

Understood, but wouldn't it be a problem that assault mech lances need something lighter and faster to serve as recon/scout to make sure they fight efficiently? While there's the heavy Ostsol (speed of 86.4 kph) and the assault Charger C (speed of 130 kph), they're pricey if you need a recon/scout mech (and I doubt Clan Snow Raven will allow anyone else to have Charger Cs, no matter what).
>>
>>96446368
You have to figure out, when building formations, if this is a need that will be covered in the lance or by another lance. Dropship limits come into play here, the less mechs the formation has, the more missions these mechs have to cover by themselves. Similarly, a small formation with a small dropship is unlikely to bring a dedicated assault lance.

>>96451150
Funny enough, I played a match recently where a KKrab made it right next to my Crusader, which at this late stage of the match had gone undamaged as 2 of it's comrades had exploded next to it, and aimed it's AC/20 only for it to jam. I think I'm going to paint a cross on this guy because he is protected by the Lord.
Said Krab also got boiled earlier by my late vulture A by 32 heat worth of infernos and somehow survived (and wasted the vulture)

NTA, but as much I I don't like Highlanders my BiL took one on the weekend and headshot a Helios with it. One hit kill with the Gauss rifle. Best I got was waxing a Tiang-Zhong with an AC10 from a Centurion. Left torso crit, rolled gauss rifle, another 15 pts of damage fragged it because of XL engine. Actually, that Centurion was pretty much the MVP. Just marched up the center of the board and blew the leg off a raven and crippled it, shot up the Helios and stripped most of the armor, kicked a Sha-yu and killed the TZ.
Honorable mention to the Guillotine though, took a -ton- of damage and only ended up with a single point of structure damage... and nearly killed itself with a headbutt of incredible violence against the TZ. Seriously, no armor left there after the charge. I'm gonna call that one Ogryn.

>>

>Nicky rode an Atlas II
That is kind of the reason why I chose the Atlas II. Some Dark Caste youngsters, sick of living under bandit lord tyranny, go exploring and find an old Exodus-era DropShip containing a single 'Mech, an Atlas II. It's a bit messed up but will run, and upon taking their revenge, Clan Ghost Bear shows up and they get their first interactions with the Clans. Seeing them as a better option than everyone else, and through proving their mettle, they get to be given an impossible task back at Strana Mechty in order to become a "Clan" (not really, more a Free Guild at the end of the day) - the one who is to be their kaKhan has to take a Trial of Position and earn the position by defeating six opponents, with Clans Jade Falcon, Blood Spirit, Smoke Jaguar, Ice Hellion, Steel Viper and Fire Mandrill providing opponents.

Yeah, it's nonsense, but I wanted a means to have a semi-independent group that still follows Clan norms and thus can be a sort of viewpoint group for a tour guide to the Clans during 3015 and onwards.

Not really much you can do with it that won't make it a copy of another mech. The lrm-10 is kinda unique. You could swap out the weapons for a large laser and srm2 to have a faster, weaker panther. You could swap the lrms for SRMs and have a slower, jumpier, better protected commando.

Outside the occasional salvage, until the FedCom became a thing and they shared with the Lyrans nobody really used Valks because the only factory existed in the FedSuns. You need to enlarge the radius of the cut at the upper thigh so it covers more of the knee, and slightly straighten the forward leg so it's closer to vertical. Or you can dig out the upper knee joint and turn the thigh into a nub so the plates on either side of the knee joint cover the joint. It's a bad sculpt for that pose.

The question I want to know at the moment is concerning Battletech: Gothic, not the grimdark gothic shit, if I want that I have 40k. But does Gothic run on the same mechanic as Total Warfare? And if so, how does the game treat the kaiju monsters gothic features? Are they just mechs by a different name? Or do they have their own special mechanic? Or do the giant monsters exist only in the lore and actual gameplay is just mech-on-mech combat? I’ve heard some limited preorders have been released so I was curious what people are saying.

It's only a matter of time until CGL just starts making wholesale changes the rule system in order to make BT a more appealing tournament game. Getting rid of BV in favor of a basic point value is just the beginning. Not just tweaks, but foundational changes in how the game is structured and played, in order to let the retarded paypigs approach the game. You know it's coming. They're going to make real rules changes, so that you won't be able to use your old books anymore, because that's where the money is.

And nobody is willing to kill the people responsible. That's the only way they can be stopped. Davionman was right, but he didn't go far enough. One of you Amerifats needs to take one for the team. He can obviously just not fire those weapons for a turn if he's in danger of getting heated up, a mech with lower heat tolerance is going to be at a much higher risk of continuously rolling to detonate.
Being able to one-turn push people to 19 heat means you've just added an extra instant kill check to the game that many designs wont be built to resist, it's obvious that's a very complex thing to mess with.

C-bills are a commodity, so one could back a house currency with c-bills if so desired. However the problem with using c-bills as a backing is that the c-bill is also representative money for highly useful and desired services. That would risk massive distortions when applied on an intergalactic scale due to different use levels of Comstar services.

>>96461314
It's also not inherently stable. While we outside of the universe know that Comstar won't fuck with it, in-universe there's nothing stopping them from raising the price of a transmission or giving c-bills an expiration date. At the end of the day, a c-bill is like a gift card or token. The entity controlling it can change what they'll accept it as at any time, which is a risky proposition for a government reserve looking for commodities to base money on.
>>
>>96461298
>He can obviously just not fire those weapons for a turn if he's in danger of getting heated up,

If aMech is already running kinda hot and gets hit with 25+ points of heat, it can easily get stuck in a situation where it has positive heat even doing nothing. It's not that hard to generate that much heat. Its not trivial, but it's not that hard.
>>
Mechwarrior, prepare for combat and do not refuse the Batchal.
>>
>>96461352
I just had a situation where an opponent's mech that had 10 SHS took two crits to the fusion engine while already running up the heat scale and that mech was fundamentally removed from play. It jumped 6 to break LOS and get into cover, managed to avoid an ammo explosion, and voluntarily shut down because it couldn't do anything else.
>>
>>96461416
I had a game recently in which I got 2 engine crits on my opponent's mech. It made it so after he did a running alpha strike, he actually gained 2 heat!
>>
>>96461352
I know, but I'm saying in which case the mechs with less heat sinks are absolutely turbo-fucked. Some of them wont even be able to vent 15 heat a turn, let alone 25. It's optimized for double heat sink monsters even more.

Elements of Comstar routinely overcharged in order to skim money undetected to fund the build up of the Blakist militias.

Did they overcharge the fixed rate of the HPG pulse or all the fees and secondary services? Did they ask for 2 c-bills for a short message one station out?
>>
>>96461872
I don't know the details, just that they did it.

fire falcon!
>>
>>96461878
Well, the C-bill is fixed to the standard price for a standard transmission, any other services don't have permanently fixed prices and nobody would really notice if their prices were off since they're "market price" in the first place. If the standard transmission cost went up, that's something people would notice, because that would directly inflate the C-bill. Maybe if they were using dark banking wizardry to take .001 C-cent off the top without it actually showing up on accounts or something, but that's not going to fund much even if you're getting thousands of transactions a day. Much easier to just change the price of the lattes on the lobby cafe sign and assign new transaction fees where company policy doesn't include them.

The Clans, the Macross colony fleets and the Sidonia are all rival groups who escaped Earth after it got wrecked in the first Human-Zjentlaudi war, while Earth I'd a post-apocalyptic wasteland that's a cross between Gundam X, Xabungle, Eureka 7, Mazinkaiser Skull and maybe some others.
>>
>>96461894
they do bankings and shits too, right? interest rate, service charges, intermediary fees for mercs etc plenty of other ways to make money
>>
>>96462004
Depending on if it's Macross or Robotech, the zentradi might think the star league is the protoculture (in the original Macross, the titular super dimensional fortress is from a stereotypical progenitor race that the Zentradi are either rebelling against or at war with and its automated systems fire on them when they first show up, leading to them thinking they've finally found "the protoculture" that created them. In Robotech "protoculture" is an energy mcguffin on that ship which they're chasing down for normal resource war reasons). The clans would do little to disabuse them of that notion even if they have absolutely no idea what they're babbling about.
>>
Are there any good crusader and quickdraw variants? Or are they all kind of middling?
>>
Is it possible to make a non combat jumpship with a compact KF drive? Thought it would have been more natural if the Argo was one like it
>>
>>96462054
The Zentraedi fleet that showed up to Earth and blasted it back to the stone age had more warships than exist in all of the Battletech universe at any given time. What are the chances that the IS weaponizes teen idols before humanity gets genocided?

What's the best crockett variant?
>>
>>96462179
As is often the case, probably the Royal. GR + 2xERLL and enough heat sinks to keep the fire up.
>>
>>96462143
Yes, though it's still a "WarShip" per rules. The Volga and Carrack were both ostensibly transports, albeit armed ones.

The very first JumpShips all used compact KF drives; the "normal" ones weren't invented until a couple centuries later IIRC.
>>
By when do SLDF Royal mechs start to fall behind the mech/tech power inflation?
>>
>>96462192
No, the first jumpships used "primitive" drives and are absolutely fuckhuge monstrosities, because they didn't have dropships, they had dropshuttles they carried internally and the jumpship itself slowly transited into the solar system and then used the shuttles as... shuttles. They could only jump 20 LY at a time and it was very inefficient since their shuttles could only go up to 5,000 tons. A modern jumpship can carry more than its own mass in dropships and since it doesn't go into the solar system it can pick up different dropships that are leaving while its original compliment catch the next one after doing their thing on the ground.
>>
>>96462203
Basically only when clantech starts proliferating through the inner sphere properly, so they're still usually peak or near peak IS performance until ilclan.
>>
>>96462203
Not really ever since most newer things are sidegrades and the royals are designed to a more competent standard with proper heat curves and consideration for a combat role.
But around the 3060s or 3070s there starts to be new stuff the royals don't have, and the newer designs stop being made to New Toy Syndrome standards. A lot of the 3050 stuff just throws anything they can fit without any concern for it making sense.
>>
Speaking of WarShips, why the hell was the Comstar so hellbent on destroying that one random warship?

ultra medium laser
>2 tons, 2 slots
>6 heat, 5 damage
>3/6/9 range
>cluster 2
>>
>>96462203
The Royals are fun because the devs largely allowed themselves to go full munchkin on several, and pretty munchkin-y on the others. They also benefitted from being relatively late IRL; most come to us from RS: Historical: 3075 and Operation Klondike, which was in 2009 and 2010. This means that the devs not only had much longer to learn exactly what's cheesy, but they were also able to engineer things that would work well against the Clans.

Many of them continue to be the pinnacle of IS Mech development, though there are definitely some improvements. For example, the MAD-5S kicks the ass of the MAD-2R.

On lasers, how exactly are regular lasers differentiated from extended-range lasers in practice? From what I gathered, an ER small laser's longest range is at 5, which is the regular medium laser at medium range.

Therefore, what's the one thing an ER laser could do that regular lasers don't that the former had to be invented?
>>
>>96462832
Hit things far away.

In the beginning there were only ERLLs, which reached out to past PPC range.

ERMLs and ERSLs came literally centuries later.
>>
>>96462832
You have set a strange standard. They are lasers that have more range at the cost of heat. Of course it's better to simply be closer to the target with a regular version of the laser but you can't always perfectly control range.

If you really must, you can think of them as weight saving. This is especially obvious with the clan versions.
>>
>>96462142
Crusader 8S and Quickdraw 9M are both serviceable if not exceptional.
>>
>>96462142
I've been messing around with c3 units, and the QKD-C is pretty decent, and the CRD-6T is an IS nova basically
>>
>>96462857

So it's a matter of what you can afford to use that won't get you killed, especially if it's a hassle getting Clan lasers?
>>
>>96462142
Bizarrely, no one ever gave the Quicksraw the XL engine it needed to be an IS Mad Dog.

Royal Crusader is actually very good, but kinda boring. Several of the other lostech upgrades are solid but still boring.

>>96462142

Is 3D terrain worth the effort
>>
>>96463134
If you have a place to store it, yes, absolutely. If you're normal and live in a house under 2500 square feet, or live in an apartment of any size, then no it's not. The amount of space 3d terrain takes up is utterly horrendous; usually a full size plastic tub per 2 mapsheets, and obviously you'll want to have several mapsheets worth of terrain for variety.
>>
>>96463155
Modular hex terrain is a bit better for storage, you can break it down and re-use it for different maps.
>>
>>96462142
The IS nova crusader is actually quite good if situational.

>>
>>96464422
The quickdraw just needs a big MML-9 and some medium lasers and a good chunk of armor.
>>
>>96464683
There’s lots of ways to dislodge a camping Awesome as clans, his own fault for not using them

>light its cover on fire with incendiary LRMs to lower its Target Number and force it to move
>dump heat into it with fast SRM boats
>drop some elementals on it and watch as it struggles to get away

Personally I’d throw a point or two of Salamanders at it, if you’re using enhanced flamer rules (honestly who isn’t) then you can swarm it and do 20 damage and 15 heat to it every turn until it dies.
