I love this card. It punishes a lot of common play patterns (play mana rocks to ramp into big artifacts, play a support blocker to not get your voltron commander edicted, etc).

Its filled with a ton of cards that feel like they only exist for their flavor as spider-man adaptations into MTG, but that are also so weak that they won't have a place in 60 card formats or even in most EDH tables, save for people who really, really want to make spider man decks. Sol ring is a pretty similar problem but with crypt banned it solves two problems. The first is the relatively low supply of crypt vs sol ring and the second is fast mana density. one sol ring is arguably good for the format for the reasons you listed but having two on top of the other lesser but still impactful fast mana rocks created an environment where fast mana was seen in every game. That is not variability.
