Well... I wasn't exactly planning to do that. I did the gradient with my airbrush and decided it looked good-enough in person, at least by the metric that I had no clue how I'd clean it up without ruining the smooth gradient.
I will definitely add some yellow to the highlights though. Think they should be more towards the bottom with the dark green or the top with the teal?

Wrong on both counts. They're balls deep in Chaos and, seeing that they were never part of the Imperium, they are not rebels.

CWE and DEldar are basically "You and your semi-ish functional crack addict cousin".
You mostly never meet and you keep hoping that you never do. But whenever you do meet, your cousin keeps asking for money or other help, lot of the time this ends in you also getting into trouble with the authorities as well.
But rarely, occasionally, your crackhead cousin somehow pulls through manages to pull through and not be an idiot and helps you in someway or pays back on time.

The Craftworlds would never ask for help but the Harlequins and Corsairs that move between both cultures will broker a "deal" to get a major Kabal or Wych Cult to send ships and warriors to help with a war effort in exchange for questionable terms and the right to take slaves and gloat about it to their cousins.

>>Imperial Armor debacle of him and Cruddance being the big WW2 history buffs actually giving out stats for various imperial tanks
you're thinking of Warwick Kinrade, he was one of the main writers on the early IM books. Bligh wasn't involved in a major way until like, Badab War. A lot of Bligh's fluff contributions were from him writing for the Fantasy Flight RPGs, not the Imperial Armour books.
>>The Lemen Russ was slower and had thinner armor than WW2 tanks
The armor is the same as a King Tiger and its speed is similar to a King Tiger too. Really most specifics of the Leman Russ are just whatever features of a real tank the author wanted to reference.

They gave numbers in an effort to invoke a sense of scale but in every instance it was dwarfed by WW1 and WW2 so it kind of fell flat. The biggest examples are that the entire planetary population was wiped out and it was like 1/6th of the civilian deaths in WW2 or they brought up how many shells were used in a week and the number was matched by daily expenditures on the western front in WW1. They could have avoided this by not giving the numbers but it is what it is.

>thinner armor than WW2 tanks
200mm to 150mm in thickness is way closer to the highest end of WW2 tanks. Leopard 1 has a glacis thickness of 70mm and M60 93-109mm, depending on the model. All of them used steel while Leman Russ had a composite of plasteel and ceramite, same stuff they made terminator armour out of. There is no interpretation, they used a real world unit of measure for the specifications. It doesn't matter what fiction space alloy the tank is made of, the sourcebook states that frontal armor is equivalent to 180mm of RHA. That is not enough to defend it from a RPG-7. Sorry, next time don't let WW2 nerds write your sci-fi lore.

I'm looking to convert the HH Solar Auxilia LRs into Mars Alpha patterns (picrel) look-alike:

The two main parts I'm searching are:
1) the front panel with the viewport and gunport (especially lascannon)
2) The filters and gubbins on the back

I'd prefer 3d printing/STL rather than recast, but anything even a lead to what I'm looking for will be a good start!

That's not how it works, bud. When tank armor is measured in millimeters it refers to how much protection it would give if it was steel. For instance, the soviets estimated the M1 Abrams' armor to be 650mm against HEAT rounds. That doesn't mean the Abrams' armor literally 650mm thick (in some places the hull is 2 feet thick).

These guys were clearly used to the measurements from WW2 era tanks, presumably from war games built to simulate WW2. They just wrote down measurements similar to what they saw for WW2 armor and called it a day. Now we have people bending over backwards trying to explain why the space tank is slower than a Tiger 2 and only slightly better armored.

I originally wanted to do it through the eye but came out with logistical issues when it came to the exit wound - it kepts getting splatter over where his power pack was going to be, and needing such a thin spear tip made my choice of spearhead really limited. So I decided to not have it pierce straight through and instead have it just pierce the eye and have a slightly more ornate speartip

>>
>>96482125
It’ll likely dry as the satin finish, but you should test it first on a sprue or anything really that isn’y the model. I know Vallejo’s decal fixer goes on opaque and dries clear so it may just be that.
>>
>>96482095
Are you trying to do the trim as nmm?
>>
>>96482118
I prefer squimars version. The more saturated colors look better imo.
>>
>>96482125
It's supposed to be thinned quite a bit and done in super thin coats with an airbrush. Thin it like 50:50 with water and get a wide flat brush, and apply it in a thin layer across the model. You don't want to flood it, you just want to moisten the surfaces with it. If you let it pool or build up too much it'll go glossy in the recesses and is hard to get that to go away with more coats. When you load your brush you want to wick most of the varnish away before hitting your model, and also be rinsing your brush between models or large parts of a model because it will start skinning on your brush faster due to the smaller amount in the bristles and could introduce texture that you don't want

>>
>>96482214
I’d forgo the stripe if you want to do a gold AND white helmet. Heresy-Era Ultramarine Sergeants had white helmets with gold trim, that’d be the look you’d be trying to emulate there. Maybe do a gold face plate and white everything else.
>>
>>96482125
>>96482180
Nta but what's the best varnish to use? Does it really need to be a spray for best effect?
>>
>>96482307
brush on is better imo. less chance of clouding/overspraying and can keep it off things like metallics where you don't want the finish ruined.
>>
>>96482180
Thanks, did just that and covered the whole mini in thinned down version. Do I need a second coat for later?
>>
>>96482307
I like vallejo mecha varnishes and find that they all do best out of an airbrush. AK ultra matte is also quite good as a brush on if you're careful about flooding
>>96482318
Second coat would be a good idea.
>>
>>96482307
Spray on satin varnish is the most simple. I’ve always seen paint on varnish recommended if you really want to min max texture effects with gloss and matte varnish on the appropriate surface.
>>
>>96482307
I use AKs varnishes and they're all right. I spray literally everything with a 1:1 mix of matt and satin and it looks good, it doesn't dull the metallics completely.
>>
>>96482118

AK Ultra Matte through an airbrush. Honestly the brand you get doesn't matter as much as the "through an airbrush" part.

Nice find anon. I wonder if the new unit will actually get proper datasheets for 40K instead of having to use the models as alternate sculpts and proxies like the previous Necron Kill Team.

What's the difference between Matt and Satin? Surprised so many people use an airbrush here. Sadly I don't have one and have no plans on getting one anytime soon.

I assume those AK varnishes will be okay to be used by brush thinned down and in small thin coats? What about metallics? Do I get a gloss varnish for those?

Satin is somewhat glossy. Matte has a non-reflective finish.
>Sadly I don't have one and have no plans on getting one anytime soon.
If you are even somewhat serious about wanting to improve at painting I would high recommend getting one. Even just a cheap $20 on Amazon to play around with.

Apparently the Geomancer and her robots are separate sprues so they will probably be released separately. I could see them being some kind of infiltrate unit or like Ophydians where they pop in and out to snag objectives.
>>

The most succinct way to put it is that it’s like mixing matte and gloss together for something inbetween the two.

This is a sad article because lightening claws aren't a legal loadout for primaris jump pack guys. GW promoting RG but then no rules for RG to take RG-type units. This is why they should have posted some kind of angels of death supplementary book for the first founding chapters so they could get specific detachments for them and their successors.

Exodites and corsairs should also be a thing.
>>
>>96482447
You still want to do most of your painting by hand for best results. The airbrush can help through priming, varnishing, base coating, inking. You can do more or less with it as you wish but leaving such a useful tool on the table is like saying "I hate knives and I enjoy eating by fork."
>>
>>96482463
You can still have lightning claws on jumpack guys with Vanguard Vets, but James is dragging his knuckles with refreshing that kit.

Even if you just get a cheap one just for priming, you're still saving a lot of money over the course of a year vs spray cans.

>>
>>96482514
If you're just wanting to try it out, literally grab the cheapest one (that comes with an attached compressor) off Temu or something.
If after trying it you decide you like it, you can start looking at higher quality brushes and a compressor with a tank.
>>
>>96482542
I'm checking and compressors are very expensive.
>>
>>96482447
Even if you just use it for vanishing and priming it's a good investment. It just removes any stress from those processes but outside that is functionally the same. The airbrushed "look" comes from doing airbrushed highlights and glow without any handbrushing after
>>
>>96482576
Get one of the really cheap ones for nail art with the handheld compressor. If you're just using it for single colour primes and varnishing it'll be good enough
>>
>>96482447
>I also hate how airbrushed models look like
If you can instantly tell something was airbrushed then someone did a very poor job
>>
>>96482396
>Surprised so many people use an airbrush here.
people get conned into buying one as a beginner and then have to find ways to justify it.

don't thin down varnishes, just keep your brush moist, rinse frequently, and work pretty quickly. you can soak up excess pooling a bit but otherwise don't touch it once it begins to dry. most problems people have with brush on varnish come from fussing over it too much. if it does dry cloudy or rough you just apply another layer later.
>>
>>96482576
There are airbrushes that come with their own attached compressors like shown >>96482513

Obviously they will be loud and quality won't be as good, but it'll be a good start until you decide whether you want to invest more. Also I'm not sure if the cheap $20 airbrushes will offer it, but you want a dual action trigger ideally. That means you can both control the air pressure and paint flow separately.

It works really great for simple stuff, painting the armor of these guys take about and hour or more with a brush. I was done in five minutes with this piece of shit. You get to see what an airbrush can do and at worst you're $20 short.

An airbrush for priming and vanishing is just an objectively easier and more stress free way to do either of those jobs. I don't know why you would want your hobby process to be more finicky and prone to issues if you can solve it with a 20$ purchase

It's just a tool anon. You pick the best tool for the job. For the best results, you will be brush painting for the majority of the process even when incorporating an airbrush into your workflow.

Nope. For priming and vanishing you just need something that can lay down a smooth coat. You don't need fine control or tonnes of adjustability, you're just blasting a single layer of paint across the surface until you get full coverage
>>
>>96482661
>use the grinch thread

>>
>>96482650
Rattlecan priming is cheaper and less hassle than a $20 airbrush that's going to clog and need cleaning and maintenance. It's insane to suggest an airbrush makes things less finicky.

One airbrush costs 20$. 2 hardware cans of black and 2 hardware cans of varnish cost about the same. For the cost of four cans of spray paint you have something that let's you prime in all weather and have more control over your priming and varnishing

It is not a quality product, it's an absolute dogshit product made of the cheapest of shits. Mine's tip broke after priming 40 models and basecoating some more but I got a replacement for $4 or so for it, the portable compressor is still functioning. It's not precise as well so even when I'm only trying to paint the armor it got on other spots as well.
That being said it still does its job.
>>
>>96482763
Acrylics are non-toxic so you won't need a mask unless you are airbrushing enamels. Unlike spray cans which rely on toxic propellants, airbrush merely works off creating a vacuum and shooting out paint via air pressure so it isn't inherently toxic unless the thing you are spraying is toxic.
Airbrush paints are just pre-thinned paints so you can just buy thinner and thin down the paints you already have. Bottles of primer and varnish will run you far less than spray cans.
>>
>>96482804
Oh and to add on, while I think airbrush paints are a complete waste of money, acrylic inks are really fun to use as a final step in painting and I would recommend giving them a try for shading and adding contrast.
>>
>>96482798
I ordered pic related. It was like 15$ but people recommended it so what the hell. I only would use it to basecoat and maybe varnish. Worst case I'm out 15$.
>>
>>96482763
You don't need special paints for airbrushing, any normal paints can be thinned and sprayed even craft paints. And as long as your spraying in a ventilated area and not spending excess time in the area afterwards then a cheap amazon respirator is more than enough. You can also throw together a spraybooth for very very cheap and don't have to stress at all at that point

What products do you use for your cheap airbrush for basecoating? Flow Improver? Airbrush Thinner? Airbrush Cleaner? Can I jus thin the paint with water or do I need one of the airbrush products?
>>
I only really am considering getting an airbrush to more easily do OSL type effects. Glazing and shit doesnt hit as well as airbrushes from what I see.
>>
>>96482929
You can use distilled water, or mixes of distilled water and alcohol
>>
>>96482929
Vallejo airbrush thinner. A bottle will last you forever. If you live in a dry environment, flow improver can help but it’s not needed
