Why do traditional games seem to attract the most socially undesirable people? Not trolling, I seriously would like to get to the bottom of this. I don't get it, tabletop games are social in nature so why do they attract anti-social weirdos, you expect these types to stay at home and video game. Why are some games MUCH worse that other when it comes to players, ie. Warhammer 40k is worse than historical Wargames, compared MtG to Chess, etc. Is there an explanation for this phenomenon?
>>96486188Anon, I legitimately ask how old you are to not remember the satanic panic regarding so many full grown adults throwing shitfits over the idea of little timmy pretending to fight evil monsters in a board game in someone's dusty basement.Traditional games are not a cool hobby. Until recent year, very few conventionally cool people will admit to it. So you're going to get social reprobates. The guys that don't have anywhere else to go or get pushed out of every space, whether because they deserve or they don't. It's that simple.P.S. look for something called "The Five Geek Social Fallacies"
>>96486188Historicals skew older (older guys just learned to mask their sperginess better) and chess doesn't have enough player interaction beyond the game itself to let people really flaunt their sperginess
>>96486202this
>>96486202Given modern times I can definitely be 'satanic panic' being the result of widespread grooming using tabletop as an in. Look at how troons will use children's games like roblox
>>96486390Also see how /pol/tards will use children's games like roblox to indoctrinate kids into their psychotic murder cult. Remember the sharty literally banned roblox discussion because it was flooding the site.
The kind of personality that makes you think its a good idea to play MtG, D&D, or Warhammer leads easily to being a pathetic subhuman. Just look around this board.
>>96486407So why are you here?
I think a lot of people in the hobby are pretty sociable, if anything /tg/ complains all the time about people who are too social and normal. But it does attract huge weirdos, I think they look worse because they are pushing themselves to do something they are bad at but that's how you get better so they could be on the right track,I think they pop up because they manufacture an ideal version of themselves and then crash with the reality of their own limitations. Instead of seeing their issues and improving they double down on their weirdness and make shit unconfortable for everyone.
>>96486202If you remember the D&D satanic panic you're well into your 40's if not 50's. Don't expect people here to be that old.
>>96486412Yeah they're honestly not that common. I go to a convention every year and there's one bad sperg player or GM on average that I stumble intoI did once witness a loud spergfight at a neighboring table though

You'd be ignorant to deny the existence of any kind of grooming collective on Roblox.
>>96486188If you actually have the option of going to fun social outings, interacting with women, and enjoying your life, why the fuck would you ever play an rpg?

I've played in different groups and you learn to either enjoy different things or gently move out when it's not for you. 50% of the experience hinges on the GM being able to manage the table, 40% is matching the general vibe, and 10% is dumb luck.

When a "norm" is clearly pathological, not fitting into that norm is a sign of health and intelligence. Or at least being too stubborn to give in. But most so-called 'people', including even Whites, are herd animals that are inferior to house cats in every way.
>>96488732man, you have like, no theory of mind for other people. sad!You tolerate things for two reasons.1) you are tolerating something that is neutral or generally good, but which you find personally distasteful or grating2) you tolerate things that are neutral to bad when you recognize that the cost of removing those things vastly exceeds the benefits one would gain from removing it.there are opportunity costs associated with every choice of action and inaction, and you have a finite amount of time and energy to spend on things, so you have to prioritize what you use them on.shrimple

It's funny visiting conventions nowadays, because the crowd looks way different than it used to. Back in the day, it was all greasy hair, ill fitting shirts your mom bought you, and a lot of out of shape guys packed into a hall. Now the newer generations seem much more well kept.I think part of it comes from cross-pollination - cosplayers, anime fans, and the video game community mixing into the same spaces. On top of that, conventions themselves have shifted from niche gatherings into big, family friendly events. The result is that the turbo-geek atmosphere has smoothed out into something more mainstream, polished, and approachable.Socially undesirable? Heh, brother, you haven't seen nothing.

>>96491728Bro. If you don't have the motivation to get your shit sorted out now, you wouldn't magically get the motivation if you went back in time. The best you could do is know to dump money into bitcoin and sell when it hit 60K or whatever, but that is a function of foreknowledge, not a function of you having anything other than the mentality, motivation, and mindset of a fuckup and that would be reflected in your life.
>>96491753By your logic, making repeated, major mistakes doesn't demotivate people.I'm pretty sure that's not how that works.
>>96491805You still made the mistakes, bro. The trauma is still there. The effects will still haunt you. Moreover you are still the kind of person who would have made them. Avoiding those pitfalls just opens you up to new fuckups. You can dream that everything would be different if you just got a chance to do it all over, but the simple fact of the matter is that garbage in = garbage out.
>>96491830You seem to be implying that someone who has made a lot of mistakes, is just as motivated (or demotivated) as someone who hasn't yet.
>>96491856A statement mired in the exact kind of squirming lack of accountability that would doom you. If you won't fix yourself now, you wouldn't fix yourself then. Sending you back would be a waste of your time.
>>96486188We get to this bitter state because many game manufacturers (not all, Battletech is still using pretty much the same system and models from 40 years ago) engage in unfair practices to boost sales that are detrimental to the gamer.Imagine, you become invested in a game, use up valuable time, money, study and effort to finally build and paint up a collection to play with, gain a group of likeminded friends to play, then enjoy playing for a few years. You then find out that your collection, rule set or edition has been changed by the manufacturer and the collection of models, rule sets or edition you own are no longer supported, just because the company wants you to dump everything you have and buy another set of everything. You see new players coming in and instead of enlarging the current player player base, they start a new one that is incompatible with yours. The more vulnerable of your friends fall for this and start the cycle again and again, constantly trying to keep up with the ever changing cycle of buy, dump, buy, dump, instead of just playing the game they previously enjoyed. This is what makes many of us bitter. Much of the bile isnt directed at the players of the new editions, its often because we are trying to save them from the same disapointment and betrayal we feel. The current players often laugh at us still trying to promote early versions, but the idiots don't realise that they to will soon be joining us, as their current collection/version will be supplanted as well and they will be considered 'grogs' by the new generation of players that replace them. We are like ex drug users trying to warn off new innocent people from buying drugs from the pushers that ruined us.
