Have you ever betrayed the party?
Who were you and why did you do it?

Nah, this kind of thing is a hot mess to do. You need to be playing with people you really trust to be open to weird twists and to handle the situation maturely. And you also need to coordinate with your GM.

Never did mostly because it creates a lot of problems and generally isn’t fun for the players and the dm.

I was the DM. I set up the players with individual mission statements for their respective factions for a one-shot. None of them told each other about their missions because they were under the impression that the factions cooperating would also include agreeing on what to do with the item they were sent to get. As they were arguing over how each of their factions wanted to keep the item for themselves, the at-will Fireball elemental broke loose from the item and wrecked shit.

Good points. I don't play with randos on Discord or whatever most people use today so the first one is moot in my case, I play with friends. I don't agree with the second one actually either. I think if you do it it should be done as anything you would do otherwise, not some sort of artificially dramatic moment you're conspiring with the DM to accomplish. I would say to do it at the end of the session so that you can come in next time with your new character and give the DM time to manage that facet of game-planning between then and next time. In that way, it's really no different than your current character dying and you making a new one except it creates a very enticing plot thread IMO.

What kind of problems do you predict?

Yeah, sure.
One was a Dark Heresy totally miscommunication affair. Granted, we were playing as underhiver scum, so when one of the players captured pretty white girl from upper hives and locked her in for some shady reason, some of us went full simp and it ended with a shootout. We won though, the simps I mean. Shame the game ended, but had a nice happy end. For us.

The other time we factioned in Black Crusade which was also normal. I banded with another player against three others, and GMPC's Daemon Princess, because we were dicks.
We never really managed to make our moves though. Two players died like bitches to unrelated causes and rerolled characters.
I almost died duelling one of those(a Chaos Dreadnought), which I suspect was meta revenge for the previous case as it was the same player.
The game broke apart after that though, so we couldn't fuck everyone else over, unfortunately.
Fluff-wise, I just took my two vessels and fucked off into space.

I think I should play on Discord with randos, maybe it will work out.
