Just as the DBM spear exception is vulnerable to missile fire, I propose a similar unit.Saxon Raider, 400 to 600, Warband Exception,They're 4 or 4 Fast vs melee, but 2 vs missile and cavalry. With their loose formations and smaller shields, but intense aggression, they can fight and beat auxiliary but can't keep pace with pisoli
>TQOf course I use smoke, half the fun of wargaming for me is putting down little smoke plumes
>>96511129Nice puffs my friend PAINT YOUR T-60!
Trying to make a realistic artillery mechanic for a ww1 game.Currently it's like this: >You fire your artillery (heavy seige variety)>it has an area of damage of 4 hexes>roll die for each individual hex trying to get a 6>rolls (2,2,4,6)>the first 3 hexes are misses and the last hex is a hit because you rolled a 6>Any unit in the hex will be stunned or killed, and leave a crater-Theres also a shop where you can buy a large assortment of historical artillery for the nation you play as, and they each have different areas of effect sizes and shapes.
>>96512481>roll no 6s>shell has zero effect on anythingIs this the intended experience?
>>96513016yeah, the intention was to replicate ww1 artillery barrage on a trench line. So they will mostly miss, but they will suppress and cause craters which can be used as mini defensive forts when going over the top.For example A long range Skoda 38cm kanone fires from behind friendly lines but has a wide 7 hex spread. So it may miss targets but will also create craters and prevent opponent from bundling up in one area
>>96512481Have you read much in the way of first world war accounts? This is a decent onehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARD-xXwKI3AI collected a few WW1 audiobooks together here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARD-xXwKI3A&list=PLYIx7audKFzw4SyvD7Kq3QCjt1BhdEoCBWhat I remember is that artillery could be relatively precise - if you wanted to hit the enemy trenchline, you generally did thanks to observers, or it being a static defense that probably hasn't changed position in a year or so.While artillery is falling, everyone is in their dugouts, or hugging a crater, no one moves (unless they're currently on the attack and the artillery is a creeping barrage supporting them). Then once the artillery clears, people immediately get back into their positions and man their guns. This is why creeping barrages became so necessary, as you need a physical / smoke barrier between you and the enemy and to hit the enemy as you're walking up to his trench in order to effectively suppress MGs and rifle fire.If it's a hex game I'd say any hexes targeted by artillery are suppressed, and if they are in a trench or shell crater, they'd take casualties on a 6+. If they're in a dugout they take no casualties, and if they're in the open and advancing, they'd take casualties on a 3+, although they'd immediately hit the ground after the first barrage, so would be like 5+ after the initial fires.

>>96506341I love smoke and fire effects and I use them almost every game. I remember playing 40k as a kid and we would always kept every destroyed tank one board with smoke and fire bellowing out. It was so thematic and cool, but it's completely unheard of in modern 40k. The tank literally just disappears once it's healthy bar is empty. I have been playing Spectre Operations and use lots of smoke grenade which necessitates smoke effects on the board.
What's the gold standard for bronze-age miniature wargame? Ideally rank and file.I'm thinking Mediterranean bronze age, but if the game has army lists for other parts of the world (Europe, China...) it's even better.

>>96513974Thanks Ill play the book though,I am mostly interested in Austria-Hungary but it's difficult finding even movies about their side. Also thats a great idea for the mechanic. I want to be super in depth autistic with the artillery since it will be an artillery based game. Like theres plenty of autistic games for Warships and tanks but not artillery, and I want it to scratch that itch, so any ideas are welcome
Looking through a bin I had out back, turns out I had some bronze age blisters all along.I don't even remember buying them. Now I'm stuck, do I base them individually and paint them or just re-sell them? Except for the chariot that thing looks sick.
>>96519437That AI is trained on those "shitty" digital artists, so he's just putting money in the pockets of someone who's stealing from them. Could have just not had art or commissioned a good piece for the cover. Alas. not the first game I'll skip because the devs went for slop.
>>96520509>AI filters annoying people Good to know.
>>96516039Love this anon - all tanks should always stay on the table after being destroyed - it's a must and I will die on this hill (albeit behind a burning tank)In a recent game I was refereeing the players asked me if a target behind a burning tank had cover... so I rolled a scatter dice to determine the wind direction and made the call.
>>96520032I had a lot of fun designing Westfront after reading a ton of first hand accounts of the war. It's more company scale, but I had creeping barrages as an off table event that happens when you're ordered to make certain types of attack. You have no control over exactly where it's placed, but have to advance behind it anyway if you want to use it for cover... which often meant you'd take casualties from your own artillery, which is realistic (and even preferred by commanders of the time - they expected at least 10% casualties from friendly artillery, otherwise the creeping barrage is too far away!)

So do you have a persecution complex or is this post setting up the backpatting from fags in the replies? Nobody is expecting you (a spanner) to pay some faggot to use his "art", and you fucking know it. I hope you aren't teaching your sons to carry on like this. On that note, if you're writing this homebrew for your kids and you to spend time together over a shared hobby, I'm baffled why you wouldn't make it your own and get them involved by getting them to illustrate it.What we have, in Pillage, is (like I said) a glossy, full colour, hardback physical rulebook for a historical game, which is peppered with with shitty fantasy digital illustrations. If these were with shitty fantasy illustrations made by a person, opinions would start with sympathetic vicarious embarrassment for the guy putting it together and get worse from there. Instead we have shitty fantasy digital illustrations made by a computer (trained on shitty fantasy digital illustrations made by people), which for some reason (which I do not care to understand nor do I have any interest in having it explained to me) means there's posters going "And That's A Good Thing™". Can vehicles enter ruins in Bolt Action v3? All the players in my club always move their tanks into ruins to get the 4+ cover save and it looks absolutely ridiculous. Also, how much terrain should we put on the table? Our table is usually so filled with terrain that it looks like a 3E 40K Cityfight board, making assaults suicide and vehicles worthless.
How many battalions/brigades do you need for General d'Armee to be enjoyable? What about other similar rulesets?

So I've been looking at dead man's hand redux as a neat little game to play with some buddies, that doesn't take too much investment. I saw zombies on their page, is there a sort of zombie outbreak ruleset for it as well. Or is there another wild, or weird, west set game you all would recommend. The amount of terrain and models you get in their new starter is makes it a solid option, even if I use another games system.
>>96526988Ideal terrain to me is dense urban terrain with some open streets and 1-2 large open areas like a city square, factory yard, field, etc. Pic related As for vehicles in ruins, I don't give a fuck what the rules say, if it's not thematic and relatively believable for the period being simulated, I don't like to see it on the tabletop. Thankfully I have a large group of male family members I get to play with and I feel comfortable checking them if they try some 40k waac shit. Half of us are veterans, so we are pretty good at playing on the spirit of the conflict instead of gamifying it.Either way, you should house rule it so vehicles have a chance to get stuck and immobilized in ruins
Should I put some 10mm cowboys on individual bases?
>>96518848Disgusting
It doesn't really count as "historical" but I'm thinking about doing a 2020s gone hot project with US Marines vs Chinese PLA island fighting in and around Taiwan. Trouble is I don't really know much about the US Marines organization, specifically how units are composed around the LAV 25 amphibious assault vehicle. PLA has heavy armored amphibious assault battalions, but frankly since Chinese army is "foreign" to us I feel a lot less pressure to accurately portray their forces.

Are there any highly crunchy, borderline RPG WW2 rules out there? I mean where you're playing at max a platoon, which would take you a long time to play, but a fun, decently long game could be had with only a couple units per side. The scenarios you're playing aren't really points balanced but rather have narrative based objectives. For reference, I've been playing 40K Rogue Trader recently, and it just makes me want to play something similar but set in WW2.
>>96552726Does bolt action not have a built in campaign system?
>>96553548Chain of Command is a narrative heavy platoon-level WW2 game. The campaign system is pretty fun, you generate personalities for all your leaders and even track the mental state of your senior leader. If you lose enough games the guy kills himself. You also track the opinion of your men and the opinion of your CO. Definitely not as much mechanical customization as 40k/Rogue Trader, but as you take losses you can customize how your platoon is organized on the fly. In one campaign my Panzer Grenadier platoon had taken so many losses I concentrated my LMGs into two 5 man squads while I had one squad of all riflemen for maneuver purposes.
>>96554363No actually. There's the Combined Arms campaign system they sell separately, but from what i saw looking into it it didn't look very fun. A few of the books have some sort of campaign system, but my basic logic was>Need North Africa map that covers everything from the Torch landings to Cairo>Oh hey, Axis and Allies has one>Wait, why create a separate campaign system...
>>96541236The French don't even use the FAMAS anymore since 2018 when they moved to the HK416 for combat units. Only rear echelon losers and the poor sods stuck doing Opération Sentinelle get handed a FAMAS
>>96554680It will work, and if your gaming group agrees, why not.
Do you guys always go for big army projects or do you settle on small sample-sized armies as well? I often feel the urge to build a pocket-sized army with a variety of small units that wouldn't translate well to any historically-accurate army composition. Lately I have been eyeing Macedonians a lot, but I just want to build and paint maybe three dozens of Phalangites, a dozen of Royal Guard, half a dozen Companion cavalry perhaps. I am not even sure for what game such an army could be used.
>>96555656I buy random kits, never put them together, and hoard them in boxes until literally years later.
>>965535485 men series is pretty narrative driven
It's hard being the only young guy in a historical wargame club and year after year you watch another friend die and have to help with his estate sale and you notice your club getting emptier and emptier year after year. Within 5 years I'll be the last man standing with almost no new blood coming in to revitalize the hobby or the club
>>96557138Sound like a great opportunity to pick up some old boomers mini collection dirt cheap at estate sale. I've been to a few estate sales hoping to find some old grogs wargaming shit, but it's always just ugly ass trinkets and literal junk. I have been lucky and got some old firearms before
>>96553548I'm planning something like this, 1 squad of special forces in places like Burma, LRDG, Vietnam, Soviet-afghan war, Rhodesia, etc. Coop skirmish game along the lines of Rangers of Shadow Deep meets the Missile Threat mercenary air campaign meets Metal Gear Solid. It will be relatively rules light gameplay, but some inventory, weight and ammo management and XP system. Realistic weapon and magazine weights and magazine sizes.Enemies will be driven by a simple flowchart and will patrol (unlike rangers shadow deep where they move directly towards you), so options for stealth instead of brute force. The idea is to have a core system that can handle multiple conflicts, then just adjust the weapons, enemies and random events to suit each conflict. You could play as allied special forces, or VC/ NVA or Japanese patrols, so options for both sides.Would be cool to do something on stay behind forces too, say late 70s early 80 cold war gone hot where Soviets have advanced over your position and you need to call in srikes and survive as long as possible.Pic is the cover for the Vietnam version, teaming up with Flytrap Digital who do awesome operator minis
Is 28mm better than 15mm for nogames Napoleonics?Should I focus on getting the bread and butter done or just paint a lot of Imperial Guard?
>>96557138>no new blood coming in to revitalize the hobby or the clubYou need to distinguish hobby from club. This is a mistake I keep seeing being made by boomers like LWTV who lament some sort of decline in the hobby. Just because young people don't want to play with boomers doesn't mean they're not entering the hobby. Companies like Victrix wouldn't be growing if that were the case. Young people play with their own groups, typically a mix of historical and non-historical games, and don't generally go to shows because they don't perceive there to be any need when their hobby networking is largely online.
>>96559558For nogames, no matter the period, 28mm is superior. I would say also try and get some 54mm minis, those are a beaut. If you are looking to play, you have to consider the space. If you live in a studio apartment with no space whatsoever, consider smaller scales. They look good, too. But for painting 28mm is a great scale while still letting you play if you have a big table.
Do you have any Vallejo paint recommendations for the US infantry uniform (15/20mm) for the Vietnam War, especially for the OG107? Is the Russian uniform from WWII (924) the best base?
What events in ancient history make for a good background/inspiration for building and playing with a small warband of dudes? I'm looking for stories like Polycrates supposedly taking over Samos with just fifty men.
>>96562304I think so. I've painted my Nam minis with the Vallejo OD and it comes off as too dark to me. I had to drybrush everything with Strakren Green to make everything pop a bit more. I wouldn't get too hung up on exact colors though, dirt and weathering ensured that uniforms appeared in all sorts of shades of green
>>96562981Guy here has also used Olive Drab (as primer) and have highlighted with kakhi.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QrJFnNzMbII am a bit confused because Olive drab (used as primer) seems lighter and greener than I though. His method is fast (few colors) and the result is cool but a bit to brownish.
>>96559497Amazing idea. There is a guy on YouTube called The Solo Wargamer who exclusively played a version of Spectre Ops/Asymmetric Warfare that he home brewed to hell and back to allow solo play, with roaming enemies, concealed enemies, etc. and eventually he made his own game called Haywire which I believe you can get for free. It is intended for solo spec ops missions. Anyways, you could steal a lot of good ideas from that guy. Also yoi should really consider stealing a lot from Asymmetric Warfare, the combat system and game play REALLY evoke a feeling of what modern combat should feel like. I am planning starting a Vietnam project for AW soon once I'm done moving houses, what you're saying really interests me, I love late cold War stuff like Rhodesia, Soviet Afghan, etc

I have a strong desire to buy a box or two of Warlords Winter Germans to make a Siege of Cholm force. Considering that the sprues include STG-44s which i can't use, as well as their 2025 prices, are there any good STLs of appropriate winter figures?Sadly i'm quite lost when it comes to digital WW2 files, so i'm asking the experts.

>>96575166Thanks. They are lovely figures, but sadly>lotsis not really the case. They have one set with 4 bodies of greatcoats, and a variety of weapon options, but half is for late war, and their other sets are Battle for Berlin very late war, including stuff like Fliegerfaust and Volkssturmgewehr 45 and Hurtgenwald Volksgrenadiers, again with lots of STGs. Fallschirmjäger and LW Felddivision is of little use too.I might pick up the multipart set for the winter guys regardless, and see if the bodies with greatcoats match with spare Warlord arms with regular rifles for some mid-war winter troops.
>>96566781>>96567554>>96575149The bodies do not bother me, and even you have a squad of 10 guys, all the same height in 28mm, the different poses will change their height anyway. One might stand upright, one could kneel, one leaning forward to aim etc.. It bothers me way more if the weapon and their equipment is different sizes. Because no matter what pose or body shape the kneeling soldier has, his Thompson or Enfield should be identical to his running midget comrade.
>>96575149Clearly these aren't exceptional individuals, and if you created a unit of WW1 models, half of them should be as short as the short guy, and half should be as big as the other guys. Clearly this photo wasn't taken to show "hey, look how much taller we are than him. This is not typical."

>>96586086Get under the armor, could you explain that? I'm not sure how a slashing weapon would be used to try and get under armor. But most legionaries don't even seem to have worn what we call segmentata. The Tropaeum Traiani was raised in Dacia just a few years after Trajan's conquest, the legionaries depicted on it are all wearing maile and scale. It's interesting that we see reinforced helmets and the arm guards too.

>>96586982They make the things they want (and possibly believe would sell). The question itself is kinda silly. There are popular historical topics, and there are niche ranges. Some things (Wehrmacht for example) sell better than others (Dacians for example). As a company whose money comes from historical miniatures, you need to have a couple of "bestseller"-sets, to afford to close gaps in ranges, and make less popular sets too. I expect WGA to release a dedicated Wehrmacht set (besides their Panzer Lehr) soon too, and its interesting that they have not done that yet.
>>96586982while I agree that they do release shittier alternatives to kits Victrix makes, I think there is absolutely a space in the market for a competitor to Victrix who makes more stationary poses compared to Victrix's action man stuff. Victrix are terrible for rank and flank. WGA poses are typically better for rank and flank, but their quality is poorer.

>>96587673Even he will make an exception as soon as shipments from the UK will get rare and expensive, and there are no other plastic WW2 minis available. This will be a too big opportunity to ignore, no matter his personal political views.
Greetings /hwg/ hope all is well with you all.Thought I would come share these Steel First Miniatures Early Renaissance/Italian Wars with you guys. They don't have pictures with paint on them on their site, and the halberdiers/pikemen figures don't have weapon in hand, so I figured I'd come share these here. They're for a Truescale fantasy project I'm working on right now, but they are designed for historical accuracy. One of the cool things about Steel Fist is that many of their figures are based on genuine historical artifacts. A lot of the footknight armor is directly based off of pieces in the Wallace Collection in the UK. Their German peasant wars figures are based off of contemporary images. So there is a lot to love there if you are really into your history. Other than that the sculpts are fantastic. Extremely well done all around. They were done by the original owner of Steel Fist. I think he has passed away unfortunately. The Landsknechts, in my opinion, are the best on the market. No other company comes close. In terms of dynamic posing, elaborate sculpting of the clothing, the directionality of the minis, they really stand out. They're all designed for ranking up if you wanted to make pike blocks. They are more expensive than their plastic counterparts, obviously. You'll note the guy in the middle is clearly designed for a pike when you see how he is grasping the halberd with his forehand. I just kinda tilted the halberd over to give him the appearance of parrying or readjusting his stance and posture in the middle of a clash with an opponent. Anyways, I'd highly recommend the company and minis. The shipping is fast, usually out the door and on the way within 72 hours of placing an order. The guy who runs it is a good guy, I had an issue with some poor casting and a mispack and he sorted it out no fuss whatsoever. Trustworthy and reliable. They have armored and unarmored landsknechts zweihanders etc etc
A better shot of the footknight. The knights are excellent, too. Exactly what you'd want from the era with detailed fluted armor, elaborate plumes etc. the footknights are excellent. The mounted knights are truly a spectacle as well. The Italian Wars range is just excellent all around. They also do 28mm Late Medieval and Samurais, as well as ECW in 15mm. If any of this stuff is of interest to you I'd say definitely check them out.Anyways, that's enough shilling for today. Have a good one, stay classy /hwg/
>>96588068I love Steelfist. One of my favorite model makers. I bought all of their zweihander guys and landsknecr command. I just haven't got around to painting them because Italian Wars are daunting to paint. Their Samurai range is world class. Are you using them for WHF Empire?

>love painting 28mm more than anything else>dont have the time, money or space for big collectionsoh well.. I'll stick to the small scales.. for now..
Hi Bros.I'm almost completely new to historical wargames, but me and a mate have decided to try and play. We're mainly interested in Early Modernity, the Middle Ages and WW1, and despite the fact that I'd really like to try smaller scales, we're probably gonna go with 28mm. I know only a handful of HWGs, and almost all of them are from Warlord Games: Hail Caesar, Bolt Action, Pike&Shotte and the like. I've also heard very good things about Mortem et Gloriam, but I know almost nothing about it. I have a few questions:1): I know that it's not really the point of historical games, but just out of curiosity: how many points is the average game of Hail Caesar and Pike and Shotte? From what I've seen games are played with about 200 models, am I right?2): Would you reccommend Mortem et Gloriam? What are it's main strengths and weaknesses?3): What games would you reccommend for the eras I've described above, and why?

>>96592315>how many points is the average game of Hail Caesar and Pike and Shotte?350 to 600 I think? While they have army lists with points, those games are designed for scenario play. If you wanna play mass battle rules for ancients with matched play using point sized armies I'd recommend L'Art de la Guerre, it's the most popular tournament game for ancients. Swordpoint also aims for that kind of game style.>Would you reccommend Mortem et Gloriam? What are it's main strengths and weaknesses?I haven't tried it, but it seems to be in the DBx school of rules. I think the guys who wrote DBM had some drama so one of them did De Bellis Magister Militum, another guy did Field of Glory and the other one Mortem et Gloriam. The three are similar in spirit and rules. The game I mentioned, ADLG is also in the same style.>What games would you recommend for the eras I've described above, and why?If you're new to this type of games I'd look into Saga (for ancients and medieval skirmishes), Flames of War (WW2 with small figures but larger battles) and Bolt Action (for WW2 skirmishes). Those are nice for beginners because they are played pretty widely and have relatively larger companies that make starter boxes with plastic miniatures. The three systems are pretty arcadey and can be a bit gamey so /hwg/ sometimes shits on them, but they are fun and easy to get into if you're a newbie. And if you end up wanting something more deep in the period you collected for those games, you can use the same figures to play other rulesets! For example, for WW2 you could use the same miniatures to play Bolt Action, Chain of Command, Battlegroup...Of course if you are passionate about a period, I'd encourage you to look up for more historically based rules that scratch your autism, and I'd recommend you to build two opposing armies, that way even if you don't find players who have the same hyperfixation, you can make a cool scenario and let a friend run one of your armies.
28mm troops look SO much better on 20mm bases than 25mm. Why did 25mm rounds become the standard? I based my latest minis on 20mm and now I completely regret having my entire collection on 25s. 20mm bases rank up so much tighter on movement trays than 25 and it looks so much better. I keep thinking about rebasing my entire collection, but it is so much effort and I'd have to rebuy a ton of movement trays and rebase and paint them too

>>96601188You’re right that fast play, low model count, campaign rules, and d6 accessibility aren’t unique — lots of skirmish games do that. What I think Ravens & Raiders actually offers at the table is this:Activation Uncertainty with Leadership InfluenceEvery model rolls its own activation (3+ for warriors, 2+ for elites, 4+ for levies). The Leader’s Command Points let you override bad rolls. This gives a real push-and-pull between chaos (raiders aren’t a drilled army) and control (a strong jarl keeps them in line). It feels period-appropriate while being tactically meaningful.Brutal, Decisive Combat ResolutionMost fights come down to a single opposed roll (1d6 + skill).Armor is a last-chance save, not a health pool. This creates tense, lethal duels — more saga-like than attritional grinding.Shield Wall as a Core Mechanic, Not a PerkInstead of being just a bonus, the shield wall literally changes the fight: adjacent models can’t be pushed back, and gain armor. It forces players to think about line cohesion and tactical spacing in a way most skirmish games don’t.Distinctive Role for BerserkersThey must charge if able, gain extra dice, but can’t form shield wall. This isn’t just “+1 attack model” — it creates positional dilemmas for the controlling player and tactical opportunities for the opponent.Morale as a Pivotal Turning PointWarbands don’t slowly crumble — they snap.Once half strength is gone, the 2d6 Courage test makes the whole force potentially flee. That moment is often the game-winner.
>>96601211>>96601127Were these posts written by Chat GPT?
>>96601221Nope :)
>>96601227You're a cheeky little slut, Anon.
>>96601127>Fast Dropped. "FAST" "FAST PACED" "QUICK GAMEPLAY" these are all huge red flags
>>96601211>>96601127Reads like 99% of all historical games. Why is AI such a big deal when it was used on Pillage again?
>>96601127Why would I want a game that is under an hour long? Historical wargames are for spending a whole day or evening playing with fellow grogs. Games marketed as "under an hour" are meant to appeal to 40k faggots who want to fit as many low quality "matches" at the LGS as they can in a single sitting, or for tourney shitters. Sounds unappealing. Maybe you should just log off mate, I am not sure what you're even doing in /hwg/ to be honest since you clearly aren't a historical gamer and only want to argue with everyone
>>96601304This anon be bouncin on my cock like his name was OP's mother.Returning to serious stuff, can somebody sell me on Saga?
>>96601273>>96601304>>96601334Sounds like you don't want the newest and fastest wargame on the market, keep up with the times Gramps not everyone has time to push models around and consult tables for hours at a time. Sometimes I want to get a quick game in during a lunch break, that's where Ravens and Raiders excels.I'll post it on DriveThruRPG for $60 once I generate some art to go with it
>>96601372>sell me on SagaNo, it's shit
>>96601372SAGA Is old boomslop compared to Ravens and Raiders
>>96601377Ok. Can you reccommend another skirmish game set in the Dark Ages and explain why It's good?>>96601374Not this guy's goyslop, obviously.
>>96601403What's your problem with AI?
>>96601410It makes everything soulless and bland. You can spot if something has been written by AI in a matter of seconds. AI "art" is a bit harder to distinguish on a first glance, but it's still samey and homogenized. Now go to raid sum bitches.
>>96601403Pillage is what you're looking for, if you don't like it because some French millennial couldn't afford to pay for an artist, then I guess you're just out of luck
>>96601428Dumbass boomer>>96601439Pillage is retroslop
>>96601439What is good about Pillage? I've only seen it advertised by contrarians who think liking AI slop makes them unique
>>96601439I'm open to trying it, but please, can you tell me what's interesting about it? I've seen that you can play the Bretons and the Carolingean Franks, which is cool, but what makes it stand out rules-wise?
>>966014751. The Turn Sequence (Alternating Activations)Pillage does not use the traditional "I-go-you-go" system. Instead, it uses an alternating activation system that keeps both players engaged:Each turn, players alternate activating one of their Warband's Groups (a unit of warriors). The player who won the previous turn's "Pillage Roll" decides who activates the first Group of the new turn. This continues until all Groups on both sides have been activated.2. The Pillage Roll (The Core Mechanic)At the start of each turn, both players roll a D6 and add their Warlord's Pillage Rating. The player with the higher total wins the Pillage Roll.Winning the Pillage Roll: Grants the right to activate the first Group that turn. More importantly, it generates Pillage Points.Pillage Points: These are a resource used to perform special actions and trigger powerful abilities during the turn. The margin of victory on the Pillage Roll determines how many points you get. This is a crucial strategic element.3. Activation & ActionsWhen a Group is activated, it can perform two actions from the following list (the same action can be taken twice):Move: Standard movement.Charge: A move that must end in contact with an enemy, triggering combat.Shoot: For ranged units.Fight: Attack in melee.Ready: A flexible action allowing a Group to wait and react to enemy moves (e.g., forming a shieldwall, preparing to shoot at a charging enemy).4. Combat (Simple and Lethal)Combat is resolved quickly:The attacking player rolls a number of D6 equal to their models in contact. Each roll equal to or higher than the model's Fight Skill (e.g., 4+) is a hit.The defending player then makes an Armour Save for each hit. Failing a save causes a casualty. The defender then gets to strike back immediately with their surviving models. The side that took more casualties must take a Courage Test. Failure means the Group is pushed back or breaks and flees.
>>96601475>>966015125. Key Concepts & Special RulesWarlords: Your leader. Their Pillage Rating is vital. They also have unique special abilities that can turn the tide of battle.Hearthguard vs. Warriors: There is a distinction between elite warriors (Hearthguard, better stats) and standard troops (Warriors).Shieldwall: A key tactical formation that grants a significant defensive bonus.Courage: Represents a unit's morale. Failed Courage Tests can quickly lead to a Warband's collapse. What Makes Pillage Different? (Pros & Cons)Pros / Distinctive Features:Fast-Paced: The alternating activations and simple combat mechanics make games quick and dynamic.Low Model Count: Affordable to get into; you might only need one or two Victrix boxes (which contain 60 models) to build a full Warband.Narrative Focus: The rules encourage heroic deeds and cinematic moments, much like games such as Saga.Tailored for Victrix Minis: The rules and army lists are designed to work perfectly with the multi-part plastic kits Victrix produces.Pillage Points: This resource-management layer adds a fun strategic decision-making process on top of the basic actions.Cons / Considerations:Lightweight: Players looking for a deeply detailed, simulationist historical wargame may find it too simple.Specific Scope: It's very much focused on the "Dark Ages" era (Vikings, Saxons, Britons). While adaptable, it's not a generic ruleset for all historical periods.Ideal For Whom?Pillage is an excellent choice for:Gamers who already own or are interested in Victrix's dark ages miniatures.Players looking for a quick, fun, and visually impressive game to play in an evening.Wargamers who enjoy systems like Saga or Lion Rampant but want something even faster and with a different activation mechanism.Beginners entering the historical wargaming hobby due to its simple core rules.Judge for yourself.
>>96601512>>96601522Cool, you used the same tools that wrote Pillage

>>96601543erm...
>>96601439Seriously, though, can I get a straight answer on Pillage's qualities? I'm genuinely curious.
>>96601625I just generated one for you, which name sounds like something you would pay $60 for?
>>96601630Thanks. I was about to do a screenshot. AI for writing rules sucks, but for spitting out a quick summary so Anon has a rough idea how Pillage plays.. absolutely a good tool for it. I dont think Pillage is worth the attention it gets here, which is kinda sad, because i believe people wanted to have Victrix come out with a great set of rules, but its kinda a meh game.
>>96601664Victrix had zero hand in creating Pillage, they just printed it for that French guy. >>96601648Thanks, that too many to check out though I need it narrowed. Can you ask it who makes small scale modern minis?
>>96601642Listen, people always ask me to point out special features for games to explain why I love them, but I'm simply too low IQ to explain it in any other way except "it's very fun to play," which is frankly the most important criterion for me. I have played dozens of wargames at conventions and in my historical club - some I find to be very fun and others I do not find fun. I cannot articulate it better, sorry
Got a game of pillage in!
>>96601703Ok, no probs.
>>96601703based retard
>>96601686>they just printed it for that French guy.Sure, but they market it via their website. Its "their" game, even if they did not write it. They could have told him to fuck off and pick someone elses game to publish.
>>96601705Actually looks soulful.
>>96601705I would play that
>>96595973Seleucid, of course
>>96601705Man I would play the shit out of that.
So did anyone back Greathelm? It's a fun little pseudo history game.https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1674560143/greathelm
>>96602216creator is a faggot, so no
>>96602216Why would I back this when I can generate a ruleset in 5 minutes?
>mind broken by AI Hilarious.
>>96600678Isn't MESBG based on GW's darling of "roll to Hit, okay now roll to Wound, okay now I roll to Save"? I hate this slog.
>>96602216Demonship is fun, but i'm not interested in knights. So no.
>>96600993Pretty sure you could play Seven Days To The River Rhine at 15mm scale. Didn't try it yet but it has a reputation of being light, fast and to the point.
>>96602363Yeah, better systems like Ravens and Raiders have realized that rolling any more than once (twice in extreme cases) is a waste of time
>>96602363>"roll to Hit, okay now roll to Wound, okay now I roll to Save"In MESBG you just roll to hit, then wound.Still a bit of a slog, but more manageable, especially at lower model counts.
>>96602622>DemonshipLow model count MESBG is one of my favourite games.
Was looking at Incountry and Asymmetric Warfare for modern warfare gaming, and literally all the "pros" for Incountry are just variations of "it's faster and more simple." Sounds like AW it is.
>>96602645Wrong pic
>>96602622Thanks. It cuts down a third of the slog and like half the opportunity of nothing burgers so that might actually be enjoyable.>>96602441Ravenfeast is a real game and it's free, you can check it out.
Ravens and Eagles would be a better game
>>96602685Ravenfeast is a fine game, but a bit simplistic for me. They were handing out free coping at Historicon 2022 I think it was so I have like 5 hard copies.
>>96603270I'd love one but shipping and custom fees are absurds these days.
>>96603850I can send you one of mine if you really wanted it. It's a small booklet, probably only cost me a few bucks
>>96600678MESBG?
>>96601127This is every single wargame ever. I own personally like 6 wargames like this and know of 20 that are free.>>96601211Okay so 3-5 wargames and 10-15 that are free>>96601334>Why would I want a game that is under an hour long? Historical wargames are for spending a whole day or evening playing with fellow grogs. Games marketed as "under an hour" are meant to appeal to 40k faggots who want to fit as many low quality "matches" at the LGS as they can in a single sitting, or for tourney shitters. One Hour Wargames has rules that are literally 2 pages and a description of the units that is another two pages. It only has 4 units and most of the gameplay is in the maps.So anything that plays in an hour, has to be insanely simple.>>96601374What was described sounded like the most derive system I've ever heard of. Could easily be something AI coughed up yesterday after reading every single dark ages wargame, or something made 20 years ago by some guyLike 75% of wargames have barely any rules and are over before you even know what is happening... So this has to be bait.>>96601512I'm pretty sure fucking AK-47 Republic has this mechanic, along with a ton of other systems, and AK-47 Republic is almost older than I am
>>96605821Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game.
What the fuck is this shit?
And this fact doesn't get any powers?
Ravenfeast literally has more variation in units and troop types.
>>96598308I'm currently still reading it but it seems better than the previous two systems. My only complaints are that it didn't keep the DLC type stuff that added more factions or stuff from the supplements.
>>96606454Yes and no. Ravens & Raiders is obviously made up bullshit (but I'll try to keep it alive for a week myself) and the "Bondi Warriors" vs "Archer/Skirmishers" is clearly the LLM losing the plot. But Ravenfeast having more units because it made the un-historical distinction between huskarl and hirdman is not much of a victory.>>96606445Meh. Can't believe this Frog couldn't go the Bong way and give stupid bonus and armor plots to its own faction. Wasted.
>>96606445Their equipment seems to be cheaper than the other factions'. Apparently that's their "power".
>>96606796That actually makes some degree of sense.
>and the "Bondi Warriors" vs "Archer/Skirmishers" is clearly the LLM losing the plot. Que?
>>96606922>>96606922>>96606922
>the Romans can take cataphracts in PillageWow that is expensive. And you need three other guys and a chieftain before you even consider them.
