Tis a blessed day!
Let's talk Underway. Or whatever analog dwarfs should use to get around between their various cities. I always wondered how the fuck they carved them to be so massive.
>>96531441It's called the Screaming Seas. It's a vast cavernous area under the world that's flooded. Geothermal activity keeps the water near boiling, the steam occasionally blowing through tight cavernous areas like a tea kettle, giving the sea it's name. It acts as a gateway more or less to the world below, which gets weirder and weirder the closer it gets to the world battery. Dwarves traverse it with giant ships of metal, the people that ply those water are a grim and superstitious folk.
>>96531441Personally I take the "No sleep" thing from Elfs and give it to Dwarfs. Either as-is where they just doze for a few hours per night or altered like they can stay awake for days and then sleep for 24 hours on Sunday. I also make them more resilient to fatigue when they have to make Forced March checks and the like.I don't really understand where it comes from or what it's supposed to represent and accomplish for Elfs. Elfs live naturally. They don't need to spend tireless days bending the branches of their treetop cities or whatever. They build in and around what's occurring already or the trees themselves bend to home them.Dwarfs have to carve their space inch by inch and if there's not some innumerable population of workers, doing something like Moria for instance would be an insanely lengthy process even if you bless them with some extra technological advancements like minecarts and cranes and such.
>>96531441>I always wondered how the fuck they carved them to be so massive. They probably took advantage of natural caverns. Well that, and it also probably took them thousands of years to finish. They probably weren't always so nice looking.>>96531656I always liked the idea that dwarves just take naps whenever possible. It's not like they'd have a reason to have a steady circadian rhythm, what with living underground and all.
>>96528692
For some strange reason, dwarves never developed currency. At most you have the usual bribe of honey bread, beer, or cured meats to smooth over exchanges of goods. However the most this race of women have used coin for, is to hollow them out as stylish armors akin to scale maille just because they look nice. When elves hire them as mercenaries, they must pay in raw goods.

Tell me of the origins of your dwarves. For me, the dwarves as they stand are the third and worst iterations of the mortal race of the god SDK. The first dwarves were made of gold and were perfect, with intellect surpassing even the gods. Their forms were determined by the function they would serve and the other races feared them as monsters. This led to a war amongst the gods and their followers until SDK relented and agreed to destroy his children. The second iteration were made of silver, they were supreme sorcrerors and their advanced civilization made even the elves envy them. They integrated among the other races much better, but in their hearts they would never be content knowing they were the second best creations after the gold dwarves. LKR, the son of SDK, agreed and directed secretive cults in the ways of alchemy. However to reach gold, they must first become like that of lead. When their vile and evil practices were discovered the followers of SDK prosecuted righteous war on them, and lost. The silver dwarves tore each other apart and all that remained were the horrid race of lead that still terrorizes the world to this day. SDK, still needing tools to enact his divine plan then made the iron dwarves. Brutish, simple, complacent with their lot in life.
What deeds of bravery would an exiled Duergar have to accomplish to be allowed in a Stout Folk beer hall?

Dwarves are slightly more massive than humans, work harder or longer, and live at a higher altitude and in colder temperatures. They thus eat more, and not just grains like some dysgenic peasant slave. So I'm wondering how they would keep themselves fed without relying so heavily on trade. I can see farming more nutritiously-dense food on the best soil of the mountain valleys, particularly any that run east-west which get more sunlight, and grow grains and oats and shit in the worse locations, and ranch hardier livestock (like goats and sheep) on the grassy land thats too steep to farm (and extract as much cheese/milk as they could from these). They would have fisheries anywhere they could, including in caves. They would grow mushrooms wherever they could. I don't know if honeybees do well in mountainous areas. They could collect berries and roots and stuff as well, but not at the same scale, likewise with bird meat and venison. They could trade for fruits and "heavier" meats (like beef and pork), with humans, hobbits, or friendly giants. Mostly stuff thats been dried/smoked/salted, so it lasts the trip and they can stockpile it. Fresh stuff would be expensive delicacies, probably mostly for wealthier dwarves. If they can't make honey, they'd trade for it, since it lasts forever.Oh, and of course alcohol. They wouldn't be dwarves if they didn't make and consume massive amounts of it; probably all their domestic production of grain/barley. Maybe they'd trade for bulk amounts of grain to make bread with and keep as an emergency food.

>>96549961These little fuckers
>>96550476Dwarfs would also herd and care for bat colonies. Both as a source of food and as a source of guano. The guano is used to fertilize the terraced mountain side they cultivate (because of course they'd terrace the shit out of their mountains) and as one of the ingredients for gunpowder.Similarly i imagine they're good at managing and reusing their own waste to fertilize their fields while keeping it away from their inhabitated areas and clean water source.I figure they'd also partake in transhumance, using well defined and cleared paths, their goat/sheep herds guarder by an handful of members from the shepherd's guild. Minor runes could be used in aiding with food/milk conservation. My (warhammer) dwarf hold is located in what would be the equivalent of a central-southern italian appenine area. So they grow hardy olive and fig trees as well as grapevine at lower heights, and focus on more woody growth of trees/grazing pastures at higher altitudes.

And that's all what I need, don't like halflings much. "Symbaroum" has pretty gnomish dwarves (because in Nordic Sagas they were pretty gnomish, as I understand), but I would add The One Ring's aesthetics of Moria with bearded dwarves to Symbaroum's mountains and it would be perfect.
>>96555779They are all human after all. So you can just take on short race with different cultural traits. The ability to shave shouldn't spawn new races. I think fewer races make your setting more plausible.

>>96570544In KoW one of the biggest antagonists is a cruel dwarf empire that seeks constant expansion. No, it's not the chaos dwarfs.
>>96566680>>96567212>>96567838that does make me wonder on the layout of a hold, the surface level would be a fortress, mostly defences and barracks, that would then lead down into the equivalent of a cargo port that manages goods coming and going from the hold , from there I'm never too sure, I would imagine the next thing would be somewhat of a transit level, that branches off and leads to various other sections
>>96550476you're forgoing all the fantasy elements heredwarves would probably hunt and eat cave trolls(and do in some settings) since that's necessary both to defend their holds, and an excellent source of meat due to the sheer size of such monsters
>>96574753But how sustainable is this? At one point wouldn't they just hunt them to extinction?
>>96531441A lot of dwarf structures can actually make some semblance of practical sense if you picture them as being built upon cooled lava tubes and magma chambers. Provides a lot of empty space already without having to excavate an entire city block from solid stone. Honestly with how common it is for art of dwarf cities to involve big lava flumes and fountains seemingly only for aesthetic effect, I'm surprised I haven't seen something deep-dive more into dwarves as true volcanic engineers, managing the flow of lava to slowly bore new tunnels for them over their extremely long lives. Maybe they'd even seed new volcanos right under precious elven forests just to fuck with them.

In reality they ended up partly assembled in a box and i have not touched them since. You might need to replace some of the hammerers (the ones that were loose and not molded to the hands were used in a couple of kitbashes) They're currently in storage with my bits. Which I know doesn't answer your request but it does mean that I can't take a picture at the moment.I was always searching for alternative to GW miniatures and when Mantic was started over 10 years ago the prices were too good to be true so I bought one of those VHS-type boxes. what's the best and most complete dwarf language?
>>96606216I made one up in highschool with the concepts of "proper letters" that could only be used at the start of a sentence, a more base tone required to speak it, and the formal language being easier to write but harder to speak and the common language being easy to speak and hard to write. Notes for dwarves in muh setting>Dwarfholds traditionally don't allow outsiders inside. As a result, human villages invariably spring up right outside the holds gates. They're called 'Dwarftown' more often than not. The dwarven holds usually have a market square right inside the gates, where travellers can marvel at the might of dwarven masonry.>While humans worship a pantheon lead by Mother Sun, dwarves worship a signifigantly different one ruled by Father Stone>The dwarves of the south have mastered gunpowder. A dwarven phalanx of pike-and-shot is nigh invulnerable to anything but a rival dwarven force. My Elder Scrolls libraries are close to done. I have templates for races, birthsigns, and classes. A full library of Ritual Magic spells assigned to TES Colleges with inappropriate spells removed and unique TES spells added (Bound equipment, Soul Trap, Mark & Recall, etc.), small collections of custom traits (mostly talents but also a Weirdness Magnet based on Bethesda jank) and custom skills (the magic college skills, Hidden Lores, etc.), a list of diseases, some TES armors and equipment modifiers, and a complete catalog of monster statblocks from Morrowind. It's in a usable state already, but I have a few more things to add, namely lenses for vampires and werewolves as well as monster statblocks from Oblivion and Skyrim. The plan is to, hopefully, get it included in GCS' homebrew folder, so anyone can use them as they please.
>>96627145Motherfucker I posted in the wrong damned thread.Sorry for my tardation, dwarfbros.
My dwarves are two things:-Bureaucrats-Perfectionists-Autistic as hell about giving their wordTheir society is run on a series of labor contracts, timetables, work orders, and paperwork. Lots and lots of paperwork. Most of which is carried out on stone tablets. Rather infamously, the first contact between a human kingdom and a dwarf hold resulted in serious consternation when the human chief greeted the dwarf leader with a handshake that was not pre-approved by the Committee of Surface Affairs. The dwarven word for king more directly translates to "Chief Administrator".This also means that dwarves hate seeing other people work. If you can't do a job right, don't do it. When traveling abroad, it's not uncommon for a dwarf that comes upon human laborers or craftsmen to take over the task by force to "show them how it's done". Human smiths left with top-quality metalwork, woodsmen given snares that could catch a bulette, human soldiers drilled to absolute military precision. Then the dwarf, satisfied with a job well done, returns to his original task. And dwarves never go back on their word if they can help it. Breaking your word makes you untrustworthy, and if you're untrustworthy all your work is untrustworthy, and anyone you trust is untrustworthy. This means that dwarves naturally distrust all humans, elves, and other surface dwellers who are far less set in stone. But they tend to look on the shorter lived races, like humans or halflings, with begrudging leniency one would afford a child who doesn't know better. As an added note, the dwarves of my world built their holds strategically, in spots where the underdark meets the surface world. Dwarven mythology says that in the beginning of time, a surfacer begged the first dwarf clans for help fighting the monsters from under the ground, and the clans all promised to. Now they take it as personal obligation to seal off the underdark, and won't let anyone else take the job for fear of them screwing it up.

>>96621363Magic in the system I run is very risky (dc10+spell level, a genius wizard (+6) has a 65% chance of flawlessly casting a fireball equivalent) and quite weak, so rote application of it is rare. Adventurers turned military assets exist but aren't common - I imagine the dwarves have an anti-magic division with enchanted armor for that sole purpose. Similarly, their manufacturing and logistics are advanced enough to forge a cannon breech-loaded with drill-like 'Dragonkiller' projectiles. Possibly filled with gunpowder and designed with a ceramic tip that shatters on impact, leaving the dragon with a bomb stuck in its chest. Just an idea though, ultimately large monsters are a problem for the dwarves as well. That said, dragons are extinct in the peaks of Dwarfdom. The old ones have all left, although young dragons, greedy and brave, sometimes make an attempt.>>96629038My dwarves are two things too.>Mercantilist>Renaissance Dwarfist>ClannishThis translates to them seeing themselves as leagues above a human. A dwarven scholar at some point empirically proved, using statistics and philosophy, that a dwarven life is worth eight hundred and sixteen human lives. Most inter-dwarven conflicts are fought with equal parts of subterfuge, economic warfare, and massed human levies partaking in near-ritual warfare that leave hundreds of thousands dead.>Why don't the humans constantly rebel? The taxes aren't that high desu. >>96550476You know the best thing about fantasy? You can just make shit up and roll with it. There's nothing keeping you from putting expansive ecosystems inside mountains that serve as a consistent food source for their holds. The real question you should be asking yourself is "what kinda food do I want my dwarfs to have?" and build upon that.
>>96550476Like a lot of other dwarfs have been saying, you have to account for the breadth of things that fantasy can involve that also still grip to reality. Trolls and cave beasts as sources of meat, from giant moles to more out there things like deeper monsters that might dwell in subterranean lakes or rivers. D&D, flaws aside, had examples like giant blind crawfish that lived in the underdark and were a food source, as well as the Rothe, oxen-like beasts that lived underground and ate fungus/lichen. Also tubers and fungus could definitely be part of a dwarf's diet, given that they both grow underground and frequently. Moreover, you might also have reasoning that dwarfs might consume minerals, or mix them into their food like with Warhammer's Stonebread, which is grain and rock dust mixed together into bread, specifically to help make grain stores last.Or maybe they simply get all the necessary nutrients from alcohol.

>>96629038>>96629047>my dwarves are a coupla three tings

do dwarves smoke pipe weed or magic herb?i've been having a hard time reaching a dwarf mindset ever since i stopped drinking alcohol
>>96553759Shinju no Nectar
>>96677073Maybe it's just a ceremonial blade or decoration. I could definitely see dwarves decorate their halls with over the top weapons. Or hold contests to see who can craft the peacockiest item.
>>96616753>>96587240Nice paintjob.Bonus for authentic dwarven weapon, without humans inventions.

Discuss Dwarfism.
>>96678883no
>>96677073>>96677712it was probably commissioned by the US air force
>>96679757why do they need a big sword? don't they use missiles and shit?
>>96679953https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Sword_(United_States)If other officers in the Air Force like (or "like") you enough, they'll commission a ceremonial sword to commemorate your service. The more ostentatious the sword, the better.
>>96595874why is she ejecting full bullets? Is that 65% more bullet per bullet?
>>96528692My first TTRPG experience I played a dwarf named Bomrek.
>>96531441If it's anything like me and minecraft, it's the result of autism and time.
>>96682812Did he rek some boms?
>>96682890He was a chef who was super good at stealth and melee stuff. And also played the violin.
>>96528692Should you strive to make dorfs in your world unique, or should they just be dorfs?
>>96683090Just make 'em dorfs I say. If being unique is a perogative then it's better to go all the way and invent a completely new race. Trying to change up already well established tropes to me always felt like a half measure.
>>96683307For me dwarves should always be "dwarves", stocky, grumpy, traditional, hardy bearded miners. I prefer my elves as tolkienesque "better humans but usually non-asshole way" but i'm open for different takes, even dramatically different. But no pure coomerism, thank you...
working on something
>>96682934>stealth chefThis has hilarious "poison specialist" potential
>>96684332The dwarf girl literally looks like a chubby chud meme.
>>96683090Start with dorfs, keep them recognizable, don't put anything in that makes your player feel that they're somehow less dwarven than their imagination of one.I don't run elves. Fuck elves.
>>96682934>good at stealth
post more cute dwarfen lasses
>>96687335good that's exactly what i was going fornever ask a dwarf supremacist the height of her bf
>>96626618>i claim this thread for Hashut>posts guy from warcraft
>>96677432I'm still curious about the answer to this, if anyone has one.
>>96690673Dwarves don't natively smoke a pipe, that's an imported surface dweller thing. They do smoke certain minerals though. Cracked-rock that make them obsessive and compulsive, usually channeled into an artisanal pursuit for weeks at a time, locked away in their workshop, refusing to eat or bathe or comb their beards.
