I am now asking for a kings of war thread
Don't care for what I've seen, but how are the rules?
>>96538054How are the Oathmark skeleton archers as proxies for the KoW skeleton archers?Just clip their integrated puddle-feet bases and they'll fit on 20mm bases, right?
>>96538066I played a game at a convention and it was decent. If I remember correctly your morale is your wounds. So instead of plucking guys off as you take more wounds you are more likely to fail a leadership test and break. Otherwise it's a pretty standard rank and flank game, but the models kind of look like ass quality wise which is a shame because the game encourages you to make diorama style bases (since you don't remove individual models.)
>>96538272>If I remember correctly your morale is your wounds. Not necessarily a bad design. Warfare is mainly about breaking enemy morale, with casualties mainly happening during the rout (usually). Most wargames have too much lethality.
It's a pretty good system. My friend group played it for a while but then we tried Hobgoblin by Mike Hutchinson and every time we've tried to go back to KoW we just look at each other every few minutes and ask why we're not just playing Hobgoblin instead
>>96538650>hobgoblin by Mike HutchinsonSell me on it. What does it get right that KoW gets wrong?
>>96540667List building is a lot of fun in Hobgoblin. It does the dragon rampant thing but better where you buy generic unit types and then buy keywords which make the unit more expensive or cheaper. KoW certainly has a lot of variety as far as units go but being able to make an army of mushroom men from a series of myconid models I've collected over the years is fun. It has a unique turn order that's like a modified Igoyougo system where player 1 does his movement phase for everything then player 2 does the same then player 1 does combat for everyone and so on and so forth. Units can be over their damage threshold but don't get removed until the end of the round meaning there are no feel-bad moments where a unit gets shot off the board before I can do anything for the turn. The movement just feels better to me while still having the weight and consequences that one expects from a rank'n'flank game. The biggest difference is that Hobgoblin has a shared deck of cards that players draw from which have special ability cards which range from "give a unit +2 movement points" to "this unit does not get removed at the end of this turn even if over the HP threshold" If you're looking for something which can be played more competitively or in a tournament then KoW is the better option, but if you want a fast paced and more narrative beer and pretzels game then Hobgoblin is the superior fantasy mass battle game in my opinion. It is blindingly fast too, faster than KoW I would say which isn't necessarily a positive but it allows us to enjoy larger games while at the game store where we may not want to be chilling around for 4+ hours
>>96541633Alright now I want a PDF copy before I actually consider buying it, but so far it looks promising.Got one by chance?
>>96541702There are free quick start rules on the website alongside the download for the Webapp. On YouTube the game creator has a video teaching you how to play alongside Gav Thorpehttps://planetsmashergames.com/hobgoblin/
>>96538054Get off your ass and make a proper OP next time then. KoW has a small enough following as it is.
>>96538054Does it have any lore now? I mean not the whole explaination of the world, the shining ones, wicked ones, and all that, but I mean do we have info on basilean cities, statemenship, and how they see or spread their faith? Also why couldnt they make basilea like a byzantine empire?
>>96538232they work but you might not have enough bows in the kit for every one
>>96538054I like it but it didn't stand a chance - it came out when people were still mad at fantasy battle or were dead set on playing 6th forever, and now that things calmed down James Workshop finally came up with the Old World.
>>96542819There are a few novels out now. The baselia thing is the biggest wiff in wargaming history imo. Byzantine armor and aesthetics are so cool but instead of taking influence from those the creators of the game just made them look like generic WoW humans
>>96543273>instead of taking influence from those the creators of the game just made them look like generic WoW humansThe name was *right there*. Semi-off topic, but it was on my mind: I hate NuFantasy so much.
>>96544194The game has a constant fear on being its own thing. Magic is generic, factions are generic, everyone have the same units (spear, cav, large inf, a flyer), and they keep pushing the worst factions on their lore (halflings).I wish mantic grew balls and built a good setting around it and made their models more in line with the faction aesthetics (basilea having like 5 aesthetics from men at arms, paladin, sisters and heroes are looking like they came from a different game).
>>96542949>I like it but it didn't stand a chance - ... and now that things calmed down James Workshop finally came up with the Old World.A part of me thinks that it had a chance with their 3rd edition, but James announcing ToW way to early and on the same day as Mantic's launch was pretty calculated to kill hype. Coming out in October 2019 could have been a boon or a bummer with potential gains from covid bucks but no way to get the game in front of people. I know a lot of people dislike Mantic's sculpts but they have honestly gotten better over time and their more recent releases are of solid quality. I am certainly not defending their old elf line or anything though.
>>96538232You keep asking this question, which is weird. Did no one really address it? I would say it's a tight fit but if you put struts between the bases on your movement tray you'll be alright. >>96543273Depends on how you paint them. Zorn palette works better I think. Mine are black, white, gold. >>96544194Eh, I kind of like the high fantasy factions in Kings of War, they are like an aperitif or something. Frog men. As soon as Mantic gets it togteher to refresh their traditional fantasy armies you'll be laughing out the other side of your shoe.>>96544921It's kind of nice to have just enough fluff and a diorama base to be creative instead of dealing with the lore police because of /yourdudes/>>96545022I note there is no (zero) old world thread on /tg/ atm. I LOVE Warhammer 5th and 40k 2nd tho
>>96545417Its fine that you like having thin fluff but what other ips (trench crusade by ex.) have shown is that fluff sell as much as models and system.
>>96546457I don't care because I'm not engaged with the marketing and industry meta because I play games. Too many people in the hobby now who will never read a book anyway insist on being spoonfed instead of taking some creative hooks and making their own thing. From what I can tell Pannithor as a setting is developing but it's still a grab bag of high fantasy tropes so everyone can use their models. I can think of an alternative where customisation and personalisation and fluff have been totally locked down along with kitbashing. Maybe there could be a stronger visual identity but they will get there. The other genius move in their part is multiple starter sets. Cosnquest does this too, just at a price inappropriate for plastic toy soldiers.
I always had a soft spot for this model
>>96545417/wfg/ is right there anon. Sure there's a couple of grogs who play 6th or 8th but the vast majority bows to gw to be fair I've heard tow isn't actually a bad system or anything
Apparently they announced the new edition at an event
>>96546665TOW is fine for what it is (I personally am happy that they kept to older sacred cows of Warhammer Fantasy instead of trying to "modernize" the game) but more my point about GW announcing TOW with 3rd's launch was that KoW at the time had a reputation of being a replacement game for Fantasy refugees. They released a number of rulesets to let people port over their WFB armies when it imploded, so a decent portion of the interest in KoW was as a replacement game. It doesn't help that Pannithor became a weird mishmash of armies, some of which were directly ported over from WFB and others that Mantic seemed to have an actual idea as to what they wanted to do with them lorewise instead of a 1:1 copy. I honestly believe that even if TOW had flopped, from GW's point of view it would have been a success just for spiking the tire of other companies trying to enter the rank fantasy battle space (which it is important to remember is where GW got their own start, even if it didn't become their break out success).
>>96547247Clash of kings uk was this weekend. So they announced it probably there. Also there is a new trailer on the mantic channel for KoW
>>96547264Yeah I know about the replacement stuff, I was more replying to the joke about there being no tow threads
>>96541633>no feel-bad momentsSo it's hand-holding trash with no consequences for bad decisions and no reward for tactical thinking, gotcha.
>>96545417>Eh, I kind of like the high fantasy factions in Kings of War, they are like an aperitif or something. Frog men. As soon as Mantic gets it togteher to refresh their traditional fantasy armies you'll be laughing out the other side of your shoe.I was mainly focused on this part:>made them look like generic WoW humans
>>96545417>You keep asking this questionYeah I don't recall getting an answer. >Did no one really address it? Probably not.>I would say it's a tight fit but if you put struts between the bases on your movement tray you'll be alright. I guess I'll have to buy and give them a shot. I have greenstuff and milliput to hopefully eliminate the "standing on a small hill effect."
>>96550531You're taking somebody's sincere review, microquoting it out of context, putting the worst possible spin on it, and with the catty tone of an effeminate faggotYou fresh off the boat from /v/ or something? Drop the shit nobody is impressed
>>96546633should we give chapped lips Rosie O'Donell a fierce expression riding into battle?>no
>>96538054does it have a playerbase or is it colletor's thing?
>>96554754Playerbase mainly. The game was created by former warhammer fantasy designers as a spiritual successors. Thus proxying old fantasy armies or any minis is very common. The game exists primarily to scratch that rank and flank itch.
Teaser for 4th Editionhttps://youtu.be/QJ7KbxsDFVc?si=fe0nHNXzpUQ5TxaxKnock off Cathay being introduced or Nippon?
Is it true that gw announced tow very close to a new kow edition to kind of kneecap the game ? Have seen that claim repeated quite a bit but don't know enough about kow to really judge it.
>>96563932The timing was too perfect to not be a coincidence. All it was an announcement that square bases were returning, and this was around the time when KoW 3rd Edition was either right around the corner or actually being announced.I guess GW really wanted their game to succeed and not be usurped by Mantic.
>>96563742Okay if its knockoff china or japan I may be back. But plz mantic stop dopping the ball with the lore, just stop writing about gay hobbits.
>>96563742Salamanders were always Chinese themed.
>>96564439This was a lot cheaper than GW boxes. The starter sets and ambush boxes are the best value, everything else meh I'll just use some Reaper mini
>>96538066Kings of War SLAPS. It's awesome
>>96564885Actually hate diorama bases (for me, yours look good)
Love KoW. It's worth a try if anyone is even mildly interested in fantasy mass battle style. Model and unit choices really allow you to be creative (or just cheap) and it feels great to put a few units together to make nice little dioramas.
>>96565084i love this
Plase tell me they have the good sense to rejuvenate the oldest fantasy lines. >elvesElves should have a light infantry plastic kit that makes spearmen, gladestalkers/rangers and regular archers with a sylvan theme. Embrace the "slender" DnD elf trope if you want, just stop them from looking like old fashioned chairlegs. The half elves you do are a good bellweather. 5th and 4th edition WHFB Wood Elves when they were more like Celts than the overdesigned modern kind where they have fancy leather masks and footwraps and pectoral armour. They should have a heavier more high elf like counterpart to do sea guard, palace guard maybe even copy the Warlord barbarian cavalry model of shared torsos for knights. Really lean into a more bronze agey style. Dwarfs need grenadiers like yesterday and yes I mean round bombs, mitre caps and red coats and kilts. Just go all out."Wet" undead surprisingly fresh for an older range.
