I'm editing my Melek deck and I got Harmonic prodigy in the mail today. I'm still new to the deck so I'm trying to get these combos worked out in my head before I waste everyone's time in a real game.Let me know if I have this correct:>I have all these permanents in play >lightning bolt on top of my library and castable thanks to melek>cast bolt>melek copies it (2 bolts)>veyran copies melek's copy (3 bolts)>prodigy copies meleks copy (4 bolts)>veyran get's +4/4 because her magecraft "super prowess" \gives +1/1 each time a spell is cast or copied >veyran copies her own magecraft +4/4 ability making it +8/8>prodigy copies veyran's magecraft making it +16/16>prodigy gets +2/2 because veyran copies her prowess off the single hard castfor the young pyromancer>bolt cast (1 token)>veyran copies the YP trigger (2 tokens)>prodigy copies the YP trigger (3 tokens)Veyran and prodigy DO NOT copy each other's "If" abilities, so only Melek's ability is copied by the 2 of them which yields 4 total lightning bolts. Am I understanding this correctly? For any anons who play this type of deck where things possibly get even more complex, how can I explain this easily to people in addition to keeping track on a spin-down die?
>>96554560>cast bolt>melek copies it (2 bolts)>veyran copies melek's copy (3 bolts)>prodigy copies meleks copy (4 bolts)correct>veyran get's +4/4 because her magecraft "super prowess" \gives +1/1 each time a spell is cast or copied>veyran copies her own magecraft +4/4 ability making it +8/8>prodigy copies veyran's magecraft making it +16/16incorrect>prodigy gets +2/2 because veyran copies her prowess off the single hard castcorrect>bolt cast (1 token)>veyran copies the YP trigger (2 tokens)>prodigy copies the YP trigger (3 tokens)correctyou were right every other time. spoiler in case you want to try and figure it out for yourself. you're not doubling, you're getting two extra triggers. just like melek is giving you 3 bolt copies and prodigy is giving you 3 tokens, veyran should get +3/+3 per cast or copy for a total of +12/+12. if you want to think of it the way you formulated originally, +4/+4 at for bolt and 3 copies, then veyran says another +4/+4, then prodigy says another +4/+4.remember to keep a die for magecraft count, a die for actual storm count, and however many extra dice you need for mana. also veyran makes aetherflux resevoir trigger twice but it's not a creature, so prodigy doesn't.
>>96553442These charity ones usually have at least one card worth the cost of the lair, so maybe Rhystic.
>>96554606that's usually most lairs though, maybe split up between two cardsbut they surely would never ever acknowledge the second market :√)
>>96554472Yeah not much you can do about it besides play more colors.I posted about it last time but I think it could be an interesting "top of deck matters" kind of deck where you play Marvo in order to drop some big dumb spells while playing top deck manipulation.>Bait opponents into thinking they want to put high MV stuff on top (assuming they can)>Flip the script and make them pay for those big spells>If they don't and elect to leave small stuff on top, you get to win clashes and drop big spells>Either result is good for youMaybe play an artifact subtheme to it where you play some of the bigger manarocks to ramp a bit in order to cast those big spells normally.
>>96554644It absolutely isn't like that. I buy most lairs because I like the art and usually there's only one per drop that actually has a card that pays for the whole thing. Like the Spider-Man drop, only the Venom one is a good value.

>>96554502https://mtg.wiki/page/Heroes_of_the_RealmAs for the 001/001. It's a joke. The card was rewarded to the LotR team,. It's a reference to the 001/001 version of the One Ring.https://scryfall.com/card/ltr/0/the-one-ring
>>96554703Can't believe I didn't realise that that creature is clearly a nod to Glacial Chasm (enables the combo on its own, and is an explorer of icey lands - plus it will eventually mill you out quicker than your opponents if you just set there behind the chasm)

>>96555126that's because they need whole chapters to describe their effects, at 4p font size. No keywords at all isnt a solution either
>>96555141> pendulum zone
>>96555126That's one thing I'll always appreciate about Yu-Gi-Oh. Every card tells you exactly what it does every time. No need to look up keywords from an old set. Problem solving card text also helped immensely.
>>96555126I need a magnifying glass though.
>>96555126but i need to pass the bar exam to understand timings and other bullshit interactions
>>96555126I sometimes have a friend in my DMs venting about ygo rulings, so looking back I found that Pot of Greed does in fact target you. So with some fuckery you can redirect your opponent's pot to yourself. And apparently "instead" also isn't really a keyword like in mtg. You more go by vibes. And even if they're actual replacement effects, they can shut off payments by making it impossible to pay them. As in if you need to send something to the graveyard and there's a replacement effect that sends it to exile instead, you can't make the payment anymore. So the game kinda checks the result before even doing something.Dunno, ygo rules are weird, I rather play with mtgs which don't really have weird cases like that.
>>96555126Dungeons need two cards because dungeons themselves ARE cards. A card that ventures into the dungeon brings a dungeon card into the game from your personal collection. Dungeons are not an effect baked into the rules that have reminder helpers, all the dungeon effects are on the cards themselves.

The ability has no effect when a creature with trample is blocking or is dealing noncombat damage.>The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s) blocking it. Once all those blocking creatures are assigned lethal damage, any excess damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player, planeswalker, or battle the creature is attacking. When checking for assigned lethal damage, take into account damage already marked on the creature and damage from other creatures that’s being assigned during the same combat damage step, but not any abilities or effects that might change the amount of damage that’s actually dealt. The attacking creature’s controller need not assign lethal damage to all those blocking creatures but in that case can’t assign any damage to the player or planeswalker it’s attacking.>If an attacking creature with trample or is blocked, but there are no creatures blocking it when damage is assigned, its damage is assigned to the defending player and/or planeswalker as though all blocking creatures have been assigned lethal damage.>Haste is a static ability.>If a creature has haste, it can attack even if it hasn’t been controlled by its controller continuously since their most recent turn began.>If a creature has haste, its controller can activate its activated abilities whose cost includes the tap symbol or the untap symbol even if that creature hasn’t been controlled by that player continuously since their most recent turn began.

>>96558940>UHHH YOU DON'T NEED RAMP IN WHITEPlease tell me what spell I can put in white to gain mana quickly. Bonus points if I don't need to use 4 different cards to equal the ramp potential of one.
https://moxfield.com/decks/agO2Q0AdjEy9q9PK-S5qTwGuys I think I’m running too many cantrips and low mana spells. I’m considering putting some big spells in but most of them are kind of bad, awkward or unfun. I took out a couple cost reducers because my noncreature spells are already cheap and require colored mana anyway. My dream is to find a way to turn Melek into a beat stick using copied pump spells and giving him evasion with aqueous form, rogues passage, or teleportal. Are there any X spells that I can dump excess mana into for late game value? Also I saw this Gandalf cars and got it cause it seems really interesting and costs less than a dollar. In order to make running him worth it, I’m assuming you’d need to build around him or have a flicker shell already ready to support him right?

>>96559744this is WOTC's ideal consumer. this is who they make magic for now.
>>96559630>Baby discovers discard is a design mistake for the first time
Is there a commander that has this kind of effect? I've never built a discard deck, but I don't want it to be "discard for the sake of discard". I have a 60 card 8Rack deck and quite enjoy it
>Friend keeps bitching about my decks being unfun>Repeatedly scale down the powerlevel of them>He quits anyway>Now all my decks are shitpiles
>>96559784It's probably fine in normal magic, where it's just 1vs1. But the average EDH-player is somewhere on the spectrum and has a very hard time grasping that he has to moderate himself to make the game fun for everyone.
>>96559797Yup, that’s communism alright. Instead of allowing him to drag you down, you should have elevated him instead. He didn’t want parity, he wanted to stop feeling bad about himself and thought knee-capping you would help
>>96559797>didn't record his good lists>doesn't enjoy shitpile kino
>>96559744I’ll let you in on a little secret, Redditors can be paid to make posts. Without buying an entire account or anything, there are services where marketers literally just pay people to post with an account that has good standing. And when enough retards post like that, others start doing it for free
If an oldfag who doesn't play anymore asked you to describe each colour in its modern form in just a few words, what would they be?
>>96558648I remember this one time I was building a list and realised I probably wanted that card. The same day, someone pulled it in a promo pack. I said I’d been looking for it and offered to buy. They said they were going to put it in their fucking Sephiroth deck. Painful.
>>96559835>blue>do thing draw card>black >do thing draw card>red>do thing impulse draw card>green>do thing draw card>white>do thing draw card once per turn
>>96559835White - angels, vigilance/lifelink, the "good guys"Blue - counterspells, stax/control, do thing draw card (on its own but also mainly when paired with green)Black - pay life for more powerRed - burn, haste/trample, fast damageGreen - big dudes, do thing draw card (mainly when paired with blue)
>>96559804It kinda isn't. Every time it gets attempted in a different card game it gets instantly banned or errata'd into oblivion. Some examples:>YuGiOh: Basically every card that lets you do it at all is now banned in some way, including cards like Appointer of the Red Lotus which are comparatively extremely limited.>Pokemon TCG: Half the Extended banlist is dedicated to hand control (which is honestly astounding given that Pokemon fucking refuses to ban shit ever). Probably the biggest standout is Chip-Chip Ice Axe being banned because it ended up being a centerpiece of discard strategies by allowing you to fuck their topdeck as icing on the cake.>Lorcana: Bucky was errata'd into being a completely different card>Hearthstone: Theotar, Mad Duke had his manacost increased multiple times to the point he now costs 6 mana for the effect of replacing 1/3 random cards in your opponent's hand. Mindrender Illucia had her entire effect removed.Even in Magic they get banned regularly because the play pattern is so uninteractive and unfun (Grief, Hymn, Hopeless Nightmare, Hymn). It's just that there's some weird cope around exactly Duress, then later Thoughtseize.
>>96559854>Listed Hymn twiceMeant to put Mind Twist on the list, which was rather infamously on the very first banlist the game ever had.
>>96559814I did. I've:>Offered him entire decks he never tried>Fine-tuned his decklists with updates he never used>Offered abstract advice on deck alterations he didn't follow>Offered to sit down with him and walk through his decks, which he didn't accept
>>96559767>drop the hypersonic dragon with relatively few sorceries You’re right. I dropped him for Niv Mizzet Parun. I also dropped my Third path iconoclast for a thran dynamo. Should I get some more cheap UR non basics or will mostly islands and mountains suffice?
What are some good commanders that this general shits on despite being good? Not specifically for being good but because the general cannot evaluate power?
>>96559854>banned regularlyReally weird thing to lie about.
>>96559854Hand discard bothers people less than mill
>>96559894It shouldn't. Someone milling you shouldn't really bother you until they win out of nowhere. Someone making you discard gives you less things to do and makes the game less interactive.
>>96559894Absolutely motherfucking not. Discard is, byyyyyy far, the most hated deck type I've ever seen. *Everyone* at my LGS groans whenever they have to go against it. Imagine, at all times, having 0 or 1 card in hand. Never being able to get the game going, never being able to do anything. It's fucking cancer
>MBT gets the Magic bug back>Plays ONE game on Shuffle Up and Play>Realizes Urza's Saga is a real card and goes back to YuGiOh
>>96559909I still remember a game from years ago with a Kroxa player. Every turn he played his commander or some discard spell, passed and then went back to durdle with his phone. I want the time back I spent sitting at that table.
>>96559854Thoughtseize is balanced because you lose life though?
>>96559890As far as Magic banlists go, yes discard is a strategy that regularly gets targeted whenever a discard effect not named "Thoughtseize" starts appearing in top 3 lists because its play pattern is atrocious. Literally the last Standard banlist hit Hopeless Nightmare, and the last Legacy list hit Grief (which was already banned in Modern months prior).
>>96559923And that's specifically the kind of bullshit that I'm talking about. Discard just for the sake of discard is the worst. Up there with winconless hard control/stax as some of the most awful decks that can be built
>>96559902You get to choose the card you discard. Mill gives no choice.>>96559909No one cares about discard here. Mill is virtually banned
Don't whine at me because you care more about that card over your life total.
I’m not new to mtg, I’m a returning player player and I’m not used to the current power level and popularity of EDH but I did enjoy the mode back in the 2010’s. Pic rel is really cheap to buy and I think a mono red deck would be fun albeit narrow. It seems like a cheap all gas interaction/burn deck.I know she probably can’t win any games but I want to affect the board. Kind of just throw my spells at things and see what happens, and put pressure on players at the same time. Is this card bad or unfun (for the pilot) or can you have some interesting games? Also considering Krenko mob boss for a different deck cause I think goblins are cute
>>96559888Greensleeves
>>96559993This card is a very strong commander. And Krenko is the 4th most popular commander in the entire game.
>>96560012Yeah I know krenko has always been popular but I don’t want to start on building him cause I’m afraid the synergistic goblins have all shot up price. Even stuff that’s been reprinted 8 times is Out of stock at my lgs’s. Does immodane’s effect count as commander damage for the 21 damage kill or is that just her combat damage? And if she is so strong then why is she so cheap to buy? Am I missing something? Does strength not always equate to secondary market value?
>>96559993>It seems like a cheap all gas interaction/burn deck.I built her, you're absolutely right. Which is kinda hard to balance if you don't like impulse draw cuz there's not a lot of good regular draw in red. It's pretty funny having a damage doubler out and targeting a creature for 5 damage though, since it'll get doubled twice and hit the table for 20. >can you have some interesting games? It all depends on which cards I draw. Having pic rel out with a damage doubler ended the game, as I got 72 mana to dump into an {X} spell like Banefire/Blaze, which of course was doubled twice before hitting my opponents
>>96560024>Does immodane’s effect count as commander damage for the 21 damage kill or is that just her combat damage?Only combat damage is commander damage. You can give her Grafted Exoskeleton though and her burn damage will have Infect>And if she is so strong then why is she so cheap to buy?Strength is only kinda/sometimes correlated with price. There's a ton of strong cards out there that are <$1
>>96560024>Does strength not always equate to secondary market value?Strength generally equates to secondary market value when the card is:A) best in classB) very close to best in class of a desirable class for that colourC) they just didn't print enough of themThere are a number of perfectly good cards, like Imodane, which are none of those things.
So, these and the other welcome deck exclusives are going to stay 40-80 each?
>>96559902But milling gives you less things to do to
>>96560052We have no idea. It's still in pre-sale so you should completely ignore all prices you see until ~2 weeks after release. ALL cards go through presale hype, and 99+% of them will see their price crash like pic rel
>>96560063No more so than literally any other win conand if they don't kill you with it the amount of stuff you got to do stayed the sameit might even be larger depending on your deck
>>96560066Supply is the issue here. There will be 50 times as many Peter Parker/Amazing Spider-Man's as there are "Ghost Spider, Gwen Stacy" because the latter is only available in a welcome deck.

Ignoring the Duskmourn reprint, why is he a $4 card? Purely for the Partner capabilities, and not because of his ability?
>>96560117Isn't/wasn't this fuck a big thing in cEDH?
>>96560132I have no idea, I'm just trying (unsuccessfully) in creating a 4c deck for the 32 deck challenge, and need red/black, and he's literally the only option. Which is why I'm wondering if that's the reason he's so expensive for a very lackluster ability
>>96560132malcolm/vial smasher is still a viable deck
>>96560117A partner that adds rakdos is busted and that's pretty much it, like anon said vial smasher is/was fairly common in cEDH
>>96559928Nightmare was hit because of its burn effect and Grief was hit because it's effectively a one mana discard two with an above rate body. Discard on its own is a bad strategy because it can't stop topdecked threats.
>>96560206No it's bad because the game has accelerated drastically and the cards were kept below rate for viability until recently.
>>96558451How's your list looking like? Always liked The Emperor and his card seemed like it would be cool to build a deck around.
>>96559580I do love the two white Odrics. This guy is a great for how he controls combat. Deciding everything about combat on your turn the way he does is effective as hell. Just straight getting in or forcing your opponents lose their important piece blocking with it.
>>96559919>Realizes Urza's Saga is a real card and goes back to YuGiOhWas it really that bad? I always figured Wizard's absolute retardation that makes them incapable of making a working simulator for their biggest format was one of the big reasons he never came back to magic but seeing cards that came after he stopped also shocking him back to Yu-Gi-Oh is kind of funny.
>>96559919>MBTWhy am I meant to know what this is?
