I'm new to war gaming and I'm looking for the best way to move armies around? People say foam rubs off paint and other say the magnet are not stable. Thoughts? Brands? I'm looking to play skirmish scale games not 100+ model armies.
>>96558619>Foam rubs off paintVarnish your minis like an adult and you will never have this issue
>>96558619Magnets glued to the bases stuck to metal trays in a case will be fine as long as you aren't swinging it about harshly. If you have worries about stability, then use three at equal distances from each other around the rim of the base.
>>96558637I do varnish them. >>96558644thanks
>>96558619I've been very happy with foil magnets on the bases with metal trays. Just in case you shouldn't shake the fuckers but if you're giving them enough room to breath they should be perfectly safe unless you're in a fucking car wreck.
>>96558619You guys don't just throw them in your back loose?
>>96558619Eat them and store them inside your guts. Shit them straight on the table to signal your dominance. Hail Nurgle!
>>96558619So far, I have like a big plastic box, with two sheet of metal and magnetized base, which holds wellIssue is with vehicules that aren't on a base
>>96558619I magnetize my models, put them in metal boxes and put those metal boxes to a toolbox when I go to a venue. Haven't really had problems with paint chipping from varnished models.
>>96558619Magnetised my minis and put one of these in an ubereats bag, printed some additional rails and bought extra trays to give me more flexibility when it comes to height
>>96558619i got one of those big plastic boxes, put a metal sheet on the bottom, glued magnets to the undersides of my models' bases, and just move them around in that. pretty cheap, and i've never had any problems with it.
>>96558619Foam is OK if you varnish (as you should). I've never had it damage paint.
>>96560461Where did you get the metal sheet?
>>96561636got it from an old, broken microwave oven and cut it down to size. i just did that because i'm cheap; the thinnest steel sheet you can find at the hardware store would probably be even better
I've done it 3 different ways.>Foam case: expensive but straightforward. I have never had a model get damaged or have the paint worn by foam. But it is expensive, and not suitable for high density.>Really Useful box with steel sheeting riveted to the bottom. This is a solution for very strong magnet bonds (to the point where I actually have some difficulty with removing a few models from the case, because GW bases are so thin and beveled that it's hard to get a good angle). I have, quite literally, tossed this case down the stairs with some sacrificial models in it and none came loose, let alone were damaged. Make sure you seal your steel sheet with some form of paint and/or varnish, because my first batch of these started rusting a year or so after I made them. Requires power tools to make and is a bit heavy.>The same boxes, but with flexible steel sheeting from LITKO. I just put these together last week so no practical testing yet. The bond is definitely much weaker than to sheet steel (no shit), but for small and light models like plastic infantry you can get away with it. Have not drop tested.Right now I use the magnetized boxes for my 30k project and the foam case for my skirmish games. One Really Useful box with sheeting holds about 50 marines or several dreads/artillery carriers. I just get 12" x 24" sheet steel and cut it to size. Maybe $50 all together for 3 cases. Foam is like $50 per case.I am still probably going to use foam for vehicles, though, because some of mine are old and lack locking turrets. Don't need those going flying like resin wrecking balls. But for anything on a base magnets are fine.
>>96558619In a shoe box wadded with scrunched up toilet paper like we did back in the 90s.
>>96558619Fifteen or so aegyptian porters.
>>96568659>didn't have a cake tin
>>96568842OoooooOOoOoOOooHHHH, look at Mr Fancypants here.
>>96558619Honestly, if they're not 3-d prints you don't really need to worry about it in my experience. Metal and injection molded plastic is usually sturdy enough to just be plopped in any box, no foam, no bubble wrap, nothing. You'll get the occasional paint nicks and small breaks but nothing that takes more than 5 mins to fix assuming you're not regularly crashing your car lol.

>>96568659I used handkerchiefs. I honestly don't know how I never lost any blades off my DE executioners when taking the bus+walking to my friend's house to play.
>>96568842I have a Christmas popcorn tin with my hordes models wrapped in pillow stuffing still sitting right here.
>>96558619Chuck 'em in a shoebox.I actually kept my old orcs and goblins army like that, granted each unit was in a Ziploc bag.
>>96558619Up your own ass.
