I've seen people argue that swords were more like side weapons in medieval times. How would you encourage the use of lances, spears, halberds etc more?
>>
>>96571031
>How would you encourage the use of lances, spears, halberds etc more?
Maybe an extra damage die. If a halberd is dealing 2d10 damage that's a pretty big incentive.

Cameras will make it easier because I can see if people are smiling + other body language to check if I am cringe or not. More importantly it will give me confidence to speak. I am terrified if interrupting people so if I see nobody is about to talk rather than having to guess that, I can carry onwards easier.

General Origin:
An aasimar who was trained to protect the roads and sacred places from the corrupting forces of evil. He was born to an unnamed woman who abandoned him and raised in a vast, untamed forest. However, he was also cared for and taught by the monks of a monastery dedicated to the worship of celestial deities.
He showed great skill in studying the unexplored regions of the forest and creating detailed maps of his findings. The monks of the monastery taught him that nature is a harmonious structure, artfully crafted by the celestials themselves.

Why did he decide to leave the monastery and begin venturing beyond his forest?
The monastery also safeguarded powerful celestial artifacts that kept the forest pure and free from corruption. One day, a group of apprentices were tempted by the promise of quick power and stole the artifacts. As a result, the artifacts ended up in the possession of various individuals.

How does he find out about this? There are two options:
- The leader, a wise master, spoke with the ranger in a private audience and told him he must track down, recover, and return what was stolen.
-As an aasimar, he has a connection to the celestial artifacts, and they called to him, giving him visions in his dreams to guide the recovery.

I was thinking about using a whip and the slasher feat to limit my enemy's movement every round without a save. Is there anyway to abuse this
>>
>TQ
As someone who fucking loves halberds, the reason why spears and polearms were considered the "main" weapons and swords the sidearms was because they were a lot easier to train on and because of how warfare worked. If you want to promote spear/polearm use in your game, I imagine you can have more pitched battles. You could also try to do something with Reach, I suppose, but I have no idea what would make it advantageous but not broken. Having an opportunity attack if an opponent moves within range is probably OP, but I'm struggling to figure out what else could represent having that reach advantage in combat. Maybe getting an extra 1d4 to hit?
>>
>>96571188
>Having an opportunity attack if an opponent moves within range is probably OP
They had those rules in 3.5 and it was kind of fine. You still only get one opportunity attack a turn (or reaction in 5e).

In Castles and Crusades the person with reach gets to go first in the first round if relevant.
>>
>>96570975
>Do you fudge die rolls or let your PCs cheat death?
I roll openly. Everything in the game is entirely random and open and honest. There is not a single element that is curated. Everything is left up to chance from encounters, NPC names, the copper coins found on a goblin, down to the grains of sands on a beach (itself randomly generated, as all terrain is of course), or if anything at all happens. The game is absolutely perfect in its purity. It is the platonic ideal of a game. I don't know anything that can or will happen, and neither do the players. When they show and the session starts, they have no idea if it will be a fun 4 hours or a complete waste of time. The dice decide.

>Probably something that incentives not only carrying a variety of weapons but sets up situations where using a variety of weapons is actually useful.
I find the weapon masteries give this when people use them well. When I played fighter I was swapping between a bunch of different weapons and carrying a variety of options. But a spear is just a shitty long sword and a lance deals only 1d10 damage. Halberds are also just d10s and reserved for sentinel characters. Maybe we need to bring back the damage multipliers from 3.5

ok.
>He was born to an unnamed woman who abandoned him and raised in a vast, untamed forest.
Wait, who raised him?
>However, he was also cared for and taught by the monks of a monastery dedicated to the worship of celestial deities.
Ok, so was he raised in a forest, or in a monastery? I get what you're trying to say but clean it up because it sounds retarded.
>He showed great skill in studying the unexplored regions of the forest and creating detailed maps of his findings. The monks of the monastery taught him that nature is a harmonious structure, artfully crafted by the celestials themselves.
Very cool.
>Why did he decide to leave the monastery and begin venturing beyond his forest?
>The monastery also safeguarded powerful celestial artifacts
gonna stop you right there, work this out with your DM first, He might not want to add random powerful artifacts to his world

>How does he find out about this? There are two options:
>-The leader, a wise master, spoke with the ranger in a private audience and told him he must track down, recover, and return what was stolen.
>-As an aasimar, he has a connection to the celestial artifacts, and they called to him, giving him visions in his dreams to guide the recovery.
The second one is better, but i'd talk with your DM about these artifacts first.

Also, your first line is hardly related to the rest of your character. Maybe it makes sense to you because you know other details about your character's backstory that you didn't think to tell us,

How do you deal with the volatility of low-level combat where PCs have 10-20 hp?
>>
>>96571729
>How do you deal with the volatility of low-level combat where PCs have 10-20 hp?
There is nothing to deal with. If the dice say characters die they die. If the players don't enjoy the lack of attachment, extreme danger, volatility, randomness, or pointlessness, I remind them that enjoyment is not the goal, but purity is.
>>
>>96571729
If I'm starting at level 1-2, it's because I want the risk of death to be very present.
If you don't want that, then plenty of people just bypass the entire situation by starting the PCs at level 3 or higher instead.

This shouldn't be difficult to deal with.
>>
>>96571729
As the DM? Start them at 3rd.

Alternatively, start them at first level with an extra full hit die, a non-spell gain non-weapon feat, and their 3rd level subclasses features.
>>
>>96571674
>>He was born to an unnamed woman who abandoned him and raised in a vast, untamed forest.
>Wait, who raised him?
This is where I can't quite decide... because I don't really like the ranger growing up in the monastery.
Perhaps, since the forest is being purified by the artifacts and the ranger is an aasimar, I can imagine the forest animals protecting the baby during his infancy, either because their instincts associate him with that strange but harmonious celestial energy, or because they are influenced by the artifacts to do so.
While the monks see him as a child of nature, they would occasionally send one or more monks to educate and train him in their ways
>>96571674
In another draft, the monks sense and are worried about the rise of dark entities that are corrupting nature. So they send him—the one who can create maps, navigate, track, scout, and hunt better than any of them.
>>
>>96571862

>chronological order

Born to an unnamed woman who abandoned him, the aasimar was raised in a vast, untamed forest by the monks of a monastery dedicated to the worship of celestial deities. The monks cared for him and taught him that nature is a harmonious structure, artfully crafted by the celestials themselves. Trained to protect the roads and sacred places from the corrupting forces of evil, he showed great skill in studying the unexplored regions of the forest and creating detailed maps of his findings.
The monastery also safeguarded powerful celestial artifacts that kept the forest pure and free from corruption. However, one day, a group of apprentices, tempted by the promise of quick power, stole the artifacts. As a result, the artifacts ended up in the possession of various individuals across the land.
As due to the blood that flows in his veins, he had a deep connection to the celestial artifacts. They began calling to him, manifesting in his dreams as visions that guided him toward their recovery. Compelled by this divine connection and his duty to protect the sacred balance, he decided to leave the monastery and venture beyond the forest to retrieve the stolen artifacts and restore purity to the land.

At low levels, depending on the class, money is surprisingly important. For example wearing fullplate and a shield at level 1 gives 20 AC just like at level 20. While I don’t give out fullplate willy nilly I do give a money boost if I want the party to be a little more powerful. To this end I give max gold at level 1. It means the martials can be just a bit more tanky to hold the front line.
>>
>>96571885
Thanks.
Also, artifacts aren't supposed to be THAT powerful. Like, capable of changing the world.
But they're rare and powerful enough that a local threat might want one to corrupt it, forge weapons or conduct experiments.

I’ve always thought warlock was a stupid class. They picked the worst class from 3.5/4e to bring over. Everyone else is powerful from themselves while warlock has to be a butt boy to some patron. If you want to play the butt boy class I wouldn’t let the player weasel out of it.

No I specifically don't include them as butt boys. A patron who's just some demon or fairy is very different to an actual deity. If a deity is asking you to do something regardless of whether you're a cleric or not you should probably do it. If some random demon wants you to do something most parties would tell them to go fuck themselves.

First time looking through this, I'm late to the part but holy shit the art is ludicrously bad.

Half of it looks fine, in theme, a bit garish for a fantasy world but whatever, then the other half look 21st century Americans with eyeglasses, perfectly styled hair and tight fitting clothes. They look like LARPers or cosplayers, I haven't played 5e for a while but this alone while flipping through the phb would irreparably shatter my verisimilitude and make it literally unplayable.

Pleasantly surprised reading through the new Keep on the Borderlands. Besides the weirdly diverse cast of NPCs, WotC didn't fuck it up much. That's because, throughout history, wizard, warlock, sorcerer/ess, witch, and most other terms for "person who wields magic and consorts with devils" were used interchangeably. "Witch" was also famously used to describe men believed to deal with the Devil same as women.
>>
>>96575394
Wizard has more of a positive connotation, you can see it from the shared root of wise, which developed into the masculine old english word for magic. Wizard is historically like a wise sage. Sorcerer has more of a negative connotation, from the latin root that means fortune teller, or someone who communes with spirits (or devils like you said). Witch specifically comes from the feminine old english word for magic.

I mean, Pathfinder basically uses Witch for the same core class concept as DnD uses Warlock for, except it's an Int-based Full Caster instead of the weird Cha-based and restrained spellcasting with a Cantrip focus.

What would you run for coworkers who are new to D&D?

Any great suggestions for a minion to be the unofficial fourth member of a coven of hags? Should ideally be a non-factor in roleplay and decision making, but about the same weight class as each of the three hags in combat (with or without the coven spellcasting taken into consideration). Bonus points for synergistic traits that allow creative tactics to be used.

hags would have minions and servants that serve as guards and muscle, so ogres, ogre zombie, etc

TSR editions had that. Though it was a kit, which work kind of like PF1 archetypes, where you remove and add features from a class.

But like, Berserker was a Kit of Fighter, so like... eh? Some kits went on to be their own class, some became 5e subclasses. Witch, if it was modernized, could go either way.

I ask because I'm looking for his Fighter subclasses that were converted to work with the basic 5e kit rather than his revised Fighter, and the PDFs I've found have different features at different levels between the standard Fighter and revised Fighter, and I can't tell what's an intentional adjustment vs what changed over time between release editions of his supplements.

Depends if their voice acting is deeply bad or not.

If their voice acting is fine, you're just dying of vicariously cringing because they actually got into character to the best of their ability, then it's just you being a weak-spined pussy little bitch who probably spends his whole life hyper-obsessed with what other people think of him to the point you likely have no actual self identity. What you have is worse and on the opposite end of the spectrum than autism, you are a sheep-ass SOVL-less normie who will be forgotten before he's even dead. How the hell did you even end up here, go talk to Bob at the water cooler about the weather, celeb gossip, and the nightly sportsball game.

If their voice acting is gratingly bad, then no it's pretty normal to find bad performance insufferable.

Aasimar is probably the only one that'd be tricky to justify, because it's basically a human with angelic features. I suppose you could point them out as being spoiled or out of touch because they're blessed by default and people tend to worship the ground they walk on.
Everything else is pretty simple. Every race bigger than you is a dumb brute. Every race shorter than you is a weak midget. Elves take centuries to learn the same magic a human wizard does in a lifetime.

Aasimars are basically walking billboards that condemn their parent's failure to adhere to the celestial virtue of chastity, and so the children will be weak-willed cattle too. >Kill all of them save for the pack leader
>I try to reason with the pack leader to join our group instead of dying because I've been wanting to recruit NPCs for a while
>Keep rolling 20's in Persuasion
>Pack leader gives in and agrees to join us only because we were gonna kill him otherwise
>No one else in the party is happy with the logistics of keeping a werewolf criminal around who also had hostages on him
>I try to convince the hostages to not question what I'm doing
>Roll another 20
>Got_What_I_Voted_For.jpeg
>Cleric is still cursed so pay him an extra 300 going coin to go to the Church to cure him
>Cleric instead goes to one of the BBEG we are secretly suppose to kill to get them to undo the curse
>Fucks it up and the BBEG hates him, our Bard tries to talk to the BBEG to calm things down
>Makes it worse
>BBEG now wants to go on a party with us which is basically to figure out why we're so sketchy towards her
>Get told to throw away my Werewolf because of the logistics of a party keeping a werewolf criminal around while a BBEG, who'll probably kill him on sight, goes on an adventure with us in 3 weeks
>Turn him in, don't even get a reward for it

I rolled so fucking good too

Does anyone know of any 3rd Party or official books that take place in a setting that all about exploring an alien or otherworldly location? I’m thinking stuff like Scavengers Reign, Made in Abyss, or even Expedition 33. Settings with that sorta vibe.

Testing a puzzle on you guys.

>The entrance to the crypt is blocked by a massive slab of stone with a line running down the middle, as if it functions as a double door. On the slab, there are nine shallow hand imprints with the symbol of an eye on each of them. Eight of the hands form a ring around the ninth in the middle. In Celestial, you can read the following two lines: Helm's eye shines as the day/Helm's hand opens the way.

How would you approach this puzzle?
>>
we have a dude at the table who just browses his phone and rolls to shortbow an enemy on his turn and returns to his phone all session. Doesn't engage with the table at all except to cast silvery barbs if the DM crits. How is this fun for him?
>>
>>96586481
More importantly, how is it any fun for you guys? If he's not even RP'ing, what's the point of having him there?

I push open the door. If it doesnt budge, I hit it with a hammer until it does.
If it still doesnt, I hit the wall next to it until it does.

Quickened Spell
PHB'24
p142
Cost: 2 Sorcery Points
When you cast a spell that has a casting time of an action, you can spend 2 Sorcery Points to change the casting time to a Bonus Action for this casting. You can't modify a spell in this way if you've already cast a level 1+ spell on the current turn, nor can you cast a level 1+ spell on this turn after modifying a spell in this way.

Wild Magic Surge Table 57-60: You cast a random spell. If the spell normally requires Concentration, it doesn't require Concentration in this case; the spell lasts for its full duration. Roll 1d10 to determine the spell: on a 1, Confusion; on a 2, Fireball; on a 3, Fog Cloud; on a 4, Fly (cast on a random creature within 60 feet of you), on a 5, Grease; on a 6, Levitate (cast on yourself); on a 7, Magic Missile (cast as a level 5 spell); on an 8, Mirror Image; on a 9, Polymorph (cast on yourself), and if you fail the saving throw, you turn into a Goat (see appendix B); on a 10, See Invisibility.

So if you Quicken Spell a Fireball- then trigger Wild Magic Surge and get this, you can’t cast any of these random spells due to how Quicken Spell is worded. Why is Quickened Spell worded like this? They already limited the spells by locking you down to one spell slot expended per turn. Did this really need the extra clause on top of that?

Yeah I'd put my hand on the central imprint, if that does nothing if anyone in the party can even read celestial I ask whoever has the highest religion what the fuck do the 2 lines mean, and if that doesn't help I'd look for alternate entrance, otherwise grab a pickaxe and punch through the door
>>
>>96587111
2024 rules are fucking retarded, that's why.
>>
>>96587118
A high Religion check might tell you that Helm is Lawful Neutral, and that Paladins often follow this god.
>>
>>96587149
Breaking down the door it is then, unless we can find a Helmite to ask/interrogate on how to get in
>>
>>96587178
What is your party composition?
>>
>>96587194
I was assuming I would be with whatever party >>96586453 is GMing for, presumably low level and without a cleric (or a retarded one).
I'm GMing myself, the last party composition was 2 fighters, sorcerer, wizard and a monk.
>>
>>96587221
If your party has a Paladin (mine has), you will be able to solve the puzzle. If you don't have a Paladin, you will need external help. I didn't want to set those parameters in the first place, since that would make it too easy to figure out.
>>
>>96587235
What is the solution then? The riddle tells me nothing and all I'd suggest would be checking all of the combinations of putting hands in the holes, maybe try casting "Light" on a glove/gauntlet to satisfy the "shines" part of the riddle
>>
>>96587251
>Helm's eye
Divine Sense tells you that the leftmost imprint (nine o'clock) is consecrated.
>Helm's hand
A single point of Lay on Hands makes the door open.

These are first-level features that every Paladin gets, but only Paladins get.
>>
>>96587271
Lol, not a chance I would figure it out and I doubt any of my players nor anyone really could without being explicitly told about it. Maaaaaybe if it was known that only paladins can open the door, somebody could try using lay on hands on the central hand. I still don't get why the it's the leftmost imprint.

Small tip, to avoid pointlessly bogging down a session you should either provide ample alternative routes or make puzzles so simple that a lobotomized ape could have a good shot at solving them.
>>
>>96586453
Mine, boys, mine every mountain! And dig, boys, dig ‘till you drop!
>>
>>96586453
What's the hand that shines the most? I ask if I can do an arcana or perception check on it
>>
>>96587306
Leftmost corresponds to LN on the alignment chart. Divine Sense will tell you where, Lay on Hands will open it, and some INT checks along the way will provide hints.
>>
>>96586453
Cast light on my hand and place it in the middle, find 3 other guys and have the party and them put their hands on all the other hand spots.

If that fails, assume ALL the hands need to be lit, go get Continual Flames (since light doesn't allow multiple targets) and try it again 400gp poorer.

>>96586481
It's probably not, unless you guys are especially entertaining to watch on your own respective combat turns. But that's playing D&D for you.

>>96586653
If he's playing a Rogue or Bard, which would be the only shortbow users with silvery barbs access for the most part, then he's probably more focused on the out of combat stuff.
Rogue is specifically built as the "let combat take care of itself, focus on skill use" class. 24 version adds at least a LITTLE combat decision with the ability to trade sneak dice for effect, but it's still mostly an out of combat class.
>>
>>96587364
>Leftmost corresponds to LN on the alignment chart
???????
But there's only 8 hands in the ring and there's 9 alignments, the gamist concept of "alignment chart" aside, especially since even if thinkers or churches would like to graphically represent sides of conflict surely they would have the side of LAW be on the right rather than left, because Right, Justice and Law are all synonyms.
It actually makes less sense with an explanation than without it, if the leftmost hand was just picked at random by the builders and was intended to be found by Divine Sense
>>
>>96587420
There is also an imprint in the middle.
>>
>>96587425
Oh I guess I was imagining the arrangement wrong. Anyway it feels like a fairly ridiculous puzzle, and probably one where you end up spoon-feeding the answer to the party so it's entirely unsatisfying. To improve chances of somebody stumbling upon the answer without prodding I'd add extra lines on the door hinting that:
>only paladins can open the door
>the hand of helm also heals the wounded
and I'd change the the alignment chart thing completely, probably by making 12 hands in a circle (like a clock) and rewording something about shining at noon so that the target hand is the top one
>>
>>96587463
In that case, I'd much rather just have the circle of hand imprints reset every dawn and roll a die. Something like "Every member of the Order of the Gilded Eye" can work, in that both of the required features are first-level features.
>>
>>96586453
Assuming someone can read celestial, place a hand on the uppermost imprint, like the noon sun, and then place a hand on the middle imprint.
>>
>>96586453
>Helm's eye shines as the day
>Helm's hand opens the way

Could my party's Psi Warrior start telekinetically probing the area behind the door and/or its constituent components above, below, or to the sides in an attempt to determine the nature of the mechanism of its operation? I'm looking to see if it's either mechanical, or magical such that it cannot be manipulated under normal conditions or circumstances.
>>
>>96587027
Enlightenment is realising so long as the door opens somehow through their efforts, your players will feel rewarded. Even if its by reducing Helm's fancy door to Helm's pile of rubble.

I confess I'm winging it. I don't really know what's a "good" baseline to use and I only really have Grok as a buddy to bounce things off of, no team or group or anything. (Unless you all want me to post stuff here)

You're saying DMs should rely entirely on the superego and the id?

Exactly. For the most part I sometimes use it to help fill in a gap or roll for an idea that speaks to me to use or modify. It also helps with condensing my text (i do bloviate and it does help making more shorter versions)

Say your good guy adventurer loots some gear. It has excellent quality and enchantments compared to his current gear, but is sinister looking and festooned with other evil iconography such as spikes and engraved skulls. Does he still use it, even if it makes him look like a discount Sauron?
>>
>>96588441
Yes? Kit is kit. Not to mention, it ruins the bad guys' street cred if a guy's going around in their dead friend's fit doing good deeds.

couple weird questions about tieflings:
1. do they age at the same rate as their parents? Like, if there was a tiefling born to elves, would they age at the same or similar rate as an elf or half elf?
2. Are they born tieflings, or do they start manifesting their tiefling traits as they age?

I've been playing this tiefling bard who's an outcast from an elven community and mutilates himself to keep his nature hidden as he works as a travelling sage, and the whole idea I had was that he wasn't outcast until he started presenting his demonic heritage...but it also would be kind of weird if he's been travelling for decades and still appears relatively young.
