One year ago I made a thread about making a setting.

I'm nearly done. For /tg/ does get the shit done. I want to add one more monster as a tribute to this board.

Post ideas, monster art, sketches, slop, whatever.

>basic setting concept:
Reverse Underdark.
A setting about floating islands in the sky. A magic rock, Cloudstone, made by Giants of old makes the island fly. Gold is plenty and can be created at high enough altitude by several monsters.

Sounds interesting. I'd read a PDF of this if you upload one.

A year and a half ago I started mine. Its a system + setting. Still a bit to go, but its getting closer. Nearly everything is roughed out, just need to polish it up and organise it for players. Good on you for not giving up.

>swanmay

exactly. A swanmay was present in Three hearts and three lions book.

It is a shame they did not make it into a permanent DnD stock.

I changed the name since I was unsure whenever it is covered by copyright or not.
>>
>>96582250
Ah that's fair. I'm not putting mine out unfinished either. I'll have to just watch for future Overbright threads and keep an eye out. If you mention Overbright in the title I'll be able to search it up on 4plebs in the future as well.

Still, good on you for sticking with it.

I'll get you an email address I don't mind posting to 4chan in a bit. Gotta feed my kid breakfast.

Nice work, anon, good to see some OC around here.

This bears some resemblance to the world of Arianus from the Death Gate Cycle novels. Not that floating islands in a world of air is that original and only source.

So what's the main source of conflict in this world, apart from just generic "going adventuring in ruins" etc.?

Are there factions and kingdoms and all that?
>>
Monster Idea, Dead Air: what appears to be a comforting cloud or mist is in actuality an Overbright Monster. Gives the PCs exhaustion and damage over time as they remain inside. in combat the monster is a number of ghostly maws hidden in the cloud. prevents ranged attacks against itself because of the inherent cloud cover. can be scaled for higher and lower levels based on the size of the cloud and number of maws.
Special Ability: Can create a a pseudo-darkness using clouds that it can move every other turn.

That's all I got, good luck on the setting brother

Never heard of this Cycle before. Gonna check it up.

>source of conflict in this world
I never thought about it this way. Does Underdark have a source of conflict?

What I got faction, being antagonsitic to each other.

>Aberrations vs Angels.
During the Fall of the empire of the Giants parts of the Sky Dome got damaged. Now there are Aberrations sneaking in our word from above. Gods (I did not specify which gods, so Overbright can be added to any Setting) sent angels to dela with them and there is a constant war between the two.

>Giants vs Dragons.
Old rivalery. they hate each other, but both are too rare and disorganized to wage proper war.

>Varioucs cultures being assholish
Duskling steal shit from other islands
Toadkin (renamed Bullywugs) attack and take slaves.
>Clatterbeaks inhabite temporary vacated houses of other races.

I am not sure if this answers the question.

Alright. Shoot me your contact info with a page from your book you haven't uploaded to this thread so I know it's you, and I'll sent you a message. I'm always happy to have some other productive gamedevvy types to talk design and worldbuilding with, and I can look over your PDF. I'm just chilling with my kid this afternoon, and he's playing slime rancher.

FB Messenger or Discord will work. Or you can give me your Session messenger account. I don't have it yet, but it sounds pretty good. I hadn't heard someone had forked Signal and removed the reason I never signed up (the phone number).

Anyways. Shoot me an email from wherever you'd like. I just made D-4410ly1uerkzjnkaqo@maildrop.cc

It has no outgoing mail so I can't reply from there.

>>96582250
Followup: haven't heard from you yet, but I now have Session installed. if you want to use that. You can use anonymousemail.me to message the maildrop I set up. I just tested, and Maildrop doesn't filter it out or anything.

Rewrite things a little so it's not as painstakingly obvious it's ai sloppa. I don't really have a problem with sloppa in principle but it ends up being really samey really fast and it's just sorta grating every time you notice it.

It needs more work bu tin general I like the Dead Air name. so will make something out of it.

>>96582167
Do you have any advice for someone else looking to make their own original setting please?
>>
You need magic flying boats and magic flying naval warfare. I would stay away from magitech as much as possible and make it more the intentional shaping of things that already float or fly. Maybe taking a floating rock and anchor a structure to it.
>>
>>96582167
shit I thought it was reverse shadowdark.

Thanks.
I worked on it so long I do not notice it anymore. thanks for poinitng this out.

>>96583843
Strangely this is my take. except flying warfare.

There is one source of flying in this setting responsible for 90% of it. FLoating rock, CLoudstone. made by giants long ago. Its secret lost.

So e have flying castles and islands. Some islands can be controllaed. Most cannot.

Only one flying ship exist in the setting. I wanted to make somehting that feels different from the usual flying ship air setting.

So moving between islands is tricky.

>>96583964
>bahumet lagoon
first time hearing it. But yeah I have played Chrono Trigger, Might have to revist those games fro creature ideas.

>>96583829
Start putting your ideas somewhere. Paper, document, whatever.
In the initial phase just write as many ideas as possible, even contraddictory. expand the setting. It is the brainstorming phase.

At this point look at the mess you created and select the best ideas, or the ones that play nice with each other.
exapnd from there.

Talking to someoen or something about your ideas can be usefull.
>>
>>96584032
I love the idea of some guys living on the edge of society "acquiring" floating rocks and turning them into small flying boats they use to eak out a living.

>>
>>96582167
I have something somewhat similar in my setting. Though it's limited as the floating islands are the ruins of Floating Elven Cities that were basically destroyed in their civil war. (There like three livable cities left and 10 ruins that are filled with monsters, outlaws, cults, etc. So it not like you really find treasure there anymore. Just bounties and maybe some magic items the outlaws and cults have on hand. Though for those wanting to study leylines outside of elven oversight and other rare and powerful magical phenomenon. It is a great place to. (Plus there are still places locked and seal to enter just most don't bother as most of the easy places are picked cleaned and the harder stuff is guarded by cults, monsters nesting there, or mad mages studying it for themselves and all.

Why isnt it called a Dry Elemental?
>>
>>96587754
Cause i didn't think about that at the time.

Searching for ideas how to add penguins to the setting. Or any other flightless bird. Any takes?
>>
>>96587962
Why not make penguins fly? Or let the flightless penguin be a larval stage of an actually flying penguin, or vice versa, its adult stage.

Dude you NEED to read Drifting Dragons manga.
https://mangapark.net/title/56135-en-drifting-dragons
It's not an overlay to your setting but I think there's a lot you can get from it in inspiration. It's about a crew that hunt dragons with an air ship using harpoons in line with the idea of airborne whaling.

I wanted to see if i can write a complete setting. I really liked some underdark books from 3.5, and I felt that clouds settings are not very well explored.
SO here we are.

Last time I felt like i was stuck I abbandoned the project for 6 months. But realistically having an opinion by someone external can jolt you into working more.
>>
>>96590172
>I rememmber reading the first page of that one. Time to read all of it.
It's good. IMO, it's one of the better currently running manga. It's not just some iseki harem slop or superhero trash but about a working crew doing a dangerous job.
Another one I think you could get some inspiration from is Saturn Apartments. It's a scifi about window cleaners on a low orbit habitat. I describe it to friends as comfy cyberpunk but there's a lot about them dealing with life at altitude and working outside.
>>
>>96582167
Idea one:
Ironically many humans and demi-humans that live in the overbright live "underground" in the floating islands to hide from the glaring sun and razer cold winds. Or spend most of their time in large dome structures made by the giants

Idea two:
Wizard cabal. Have a school of wizards that set up shop on some island where they do experiments away from prying eyes.

Idea three:
Sirens that trick people to fall off of cliffs or into dangerous territory. Instead of half fish they can be half bird
>>
If it is the opposite of underdark it must have some reverse beholders.

Like BEEholders or something.

No idea how ti make a reverse beholder
