I've been working on a translation of the 1988 Wizardry TTRPG to play with my friends and have just finished the core rule book.
I've seen the game mentioned on here a couple of times so I thought I'd upload it in case anyone is interested.
https://gofile.io/d/3GBDyf

I have confidence in my knowledge of Japanese, but not in my ability to use office or image editing programs so sorry if it falls short in that regard.

The game came with two short scenarios and a longer, complete adaptation of Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord for use with the Wizardry TTRPG system... which I haven't translated yet, but will.

nice man, I was just reading about the Lodoss campaigns the other day and they used this system at one point

Stick that Shillelagh up your fucking arse

nice work anon

sweet dude. can you share it when you're done?
>>

Will do.
Shouldn't take too long to translate the smaller scenarios, but the Proving Grounds adaptation might be a bit of a wait, I'm afraid (unless you want it one floor of the dungeon at a time).

Wizardry is an extremely important RPG, with its video games forming the underlying foundation for Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and many other Japanese RPG series, which went on to inspire others.

It's one of the roots of the RPG world.
>>
Good work. How's the system, does it encourage difficulty like the games?
>>
You even made a form fillable character sheet, awesome work.
Do you have a personal review about the system? I'd say right now you're the most knowledgable person in this ultra niche thing in the west
>>
>>96585576
You're encouraged to be merciful to the players and the maximum number of monsters in any one encounter is generally going to be six, so there's no '6 greater demons, 9 ninja and 4 ogre lords'-type situations, but it still has randomly determined enemy surprise attacks, 'you die - no save' crits from ninja and vorpal bunnies and exploding boxes, so the adventurers aren't going to have it easy. It's a game from the 80's contemporary to AD&D with the game philosophy to match, I think.

>you even made a form fillable sheet
I gave it a go. I included a blank sheet too for someone more compentent to make a better one if they like.

>do you have a personal review of the system
Sadly not as my friends who I mean to play with are probably reading the rule book concurrently with people in this thread. I hope to run Proving Grounds with them as soon as I get the chance.

I think it seems like a fun system and they've captured the essence of Wizardry well.
It was popular enough to get a big expansion around the size of the core release (Trebor's Campaign), supplemental books and a rerelease in 2005, so I reason it must've been reasonably well recieved in Japan.
If I have a concern, it might be there's a bit of a lean on 'video game logic' with some things that might not sit well with some players. You can ready your weapons, burst through the dungeon door and start flailing but if the dice say the monsters surprised you then that's just how it is. It's Wizardry, first and foremost.

well, you're signing up for it, I think it could be fine if it feels more videogame than AD&D or whatever was competing with it when it came out. I'm slowly reading through it and it seems generally fine, nothing blew my mind, but I might give it a go just to say I played the OG Wizardry ttrpg never released on the west.
>>
Based and Trebor pilled, you planning on translating expansions/supplements too?

>Three supplements
You plan on doing these? I couldn't import options to get copies myself. Theres also second ed of Wizardry ttrpg, and advanced wizardry which follows W6 and 7.

I'm definitely going to get out all the remaining content content in the original game package, so the two small scenarios and Proving Grounds.

Beyond that, all I can say is I'd like to but I can't promise. It's taken many months to get to where I am currently, so it's a big undertaking, but if the interest is there I'll probably do it. I'll do Trebor's Campaign (トレボー戦役) before the three supplemental books if I do do more after Proving Grounds.

I'm aware of 2nd Edition and that was a point of conflict for me actually. Should I translate the original or 2E? I settled on the original because I think it is the more popular and better supported of the two and, considering the 2005 rerelease, it is, from a certain point of view, the newer game.

Thanks OP. I'll give it a read later. Please make a thread next week or so as well.

Hope this helps, if you're in Japan or have an importer.

Here's scans of the Wizardry RPG box set if anyone wants to flip through it.

I always liked the class set in wizardry. Bishop was a badass nuker in FFTA

If I knew clean scans existed, I would've just replaced the Japanese text with English in the scans rather than attempting an amateur reconstruction of the book as I did (not seeing any other choice as I lacked the tools to make scans myself).

Oh well, these will be very useful and I daresay save me a lot of time in translating the two short scenarios and Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord.

I don't suppose you have scans of the supplemental books or トレボー戦役?

All the cutting, pasting, rearranging, unblurring, recontrasting, etc. involved in using scans would have probably taken you a lot longer. And the original layout wasn't much different from just a regular Word document, so what you did is better and cleaner. Thanks for the work!

Nope, sorry. I was just searching for some JP textbook scans and the site I found just happened to have a tiny section of RPG scans, this and the JP RuneQuest box sets was pretty much it for TTRPGs.
I'm glad you can get some use out of it. Thanks again for sharing your work.

I have a unopened physical box of Trebor Campaign, want me to scan that? I cant guarantee I will have access to scanner any time soon, but would try if you need it.

Thankyou for uploading original and 2005 re-release as that changed some words (Llylgamyn and spell names) due to copyright, iirc

OP here.
No need, I have the Trebor's Campaign box too.

It's the supplements I don't have but I'll try to track them down.
>>96587104 provided a link but I think I can get them cheaper with a bit of searching.
