"There is luck in chess. " - Richard GarfieldPrevious: >>96571434Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/h8Tz2ze8Survey results: https://pastebin.com/YJPZ44rqThis general encompasses all board game genres - Eurogames, Ameritrash, Ameritreasure, Fillers, Party, Abstracts, Wargames, and especially the game that one anon is autistic about at this very moment.TQs:- What is your favorite box art?- What is your favorite one hit wonder designer?- What is your favorite non-traditional theme?Bonus question: What is your favorite game by Richard Garfield? Hard mode: No MtG.
Does Magical Athlete count? I don't have the new version he designed yet but I've been trying out the new rules on my original copy and it's pretty great.Hate the new artstyle though. Probably nostalgic for people in their late 40s-50s but doesn't do anything for me.
The new artstyle
>>96588731I like the new art. Reminds of trippy 60s-70s cartoons like Yellow Submarine. That said, I never played the original, so I don't have nostalgia for the old art.
>>96588726>Probably nostalgic for people in their late 40s-50s but doesn't do anything for me.well I'm 29 and I like it
>>96588677Bunny Kingdomi'm looking forward to Founders of Reyvick thoughalso i'm this close to late backing Final Titan just for yucks
Anyone going to Essen this year?Any games your interested in?
>>96588677>- What is your favorite box art?Web of Power.>- What is your favorite one hit wonder designer?I do not pay enough attention to designers to weigh in on that.I think TauCeti Deichmann only has one game? Him, I guess.>- What is your favorite non-traditional theme?Theme is not terribly important to me, but there certainly are games where it makes a difference.Hot Streak's mascot racing theme does a lot to keep the game visually interesting while all the admin work is happening.>Bonus question: What is your favorite game by Richard Garfield? Hard mode: No MtG.Having only playing Magic: the Gathering, System Gateway compatible with Netrunner, Mindbug, and Bunny Kingdom, I have to say Netrunner. But I have been wanting to try Robo Rally, Keyforge, and King of Tokyo.
What is everyone's favorite designer? Is it just Knizia or what?
>>96588874
>>96588677>- What is your favorite box art?I really like some of the wargames or Hollandspiel games cover art. Kind of like a book cover, no idea about the game but it looks interesting. >- What is your favorite one hit wonder designer?Three kingdoms redux couple>- What is your favorite non-traditional theme?Paleozoic/ pre-dinosaur time
>>96588874Knizia is a hack and nobody would care if his entire catalog was deleted permanently. Even you Knizia dickriders would just go back to playing GIPF and sucking each other off in a gay bar.
>>96588860- no , i'm poor.- i heard playte was going to have a stand there. tonga bonga and sardegna seem cool.
>>96588930Ehh, too much. I'll award you a pity (you) and wait for that other anon to call you Kowalsky
>>96588930He actually raped you, didn't he, Kowalski? kek
>>96588677>- What is your favorite one hit wonder designer?I have plenty of games, but only like 1 or 2 by the same designer, so every game that I like is basically designed by a one hit wonder from my perspective. The shameful part is that for most of the designers talked about here, I still don't have a single game they designed.
Guess the designer
Tried playing EU PoP, and I really dislike how railroaded it feels. Mostly the events, but also the missions. Much prefer e.g. WotR's event cards which are typically not as impactful, and have a more general bottom effect in case the top effect is useless
>>96588958A fucking retard. All high IQ designers have two things in common: they like abstracts (particularly Go) and they like 18XX.

>>96589045It's good - SI.Summoner wars is one of the games I keep thinking of getting but I always back off.

First of all, I don’t think people understand what luck is in a game. They look at a game like chess, and say there is no luck. And, in fact, I think that luck comes from all sorts of places, and really the most useful definition of luck is uncertainty in outcome: as long as you can’t predict the outcome, we’ll call it luck. With that definition, there’s luck in chess, since your mind can’t take in all the complexities on view there. This doesn’t mean there’s not a lot of skill—there’s an enormous amount of skill—but you take your best guess as to what the best move is, and then you choose it. And, if you're lucky, you choose the right one.You also see luck in sports. There’s been a lot of studies in baseball and basketball to test the validity of hot streaks and cold streaks, and most of the time, things follow a straight probabilistic model, where people have a certain chance of hitting, and it is a percent that isn’t any more or less streaky than a set of dice rolls.Secondly, I think game designers have a tendency to design out the luck. Game designers tend to be game players, and game players like things that highlight their skill, and the more luck there is...there can still be a lot of skill, but there’s less opportunity for it shine through.
Favorite publisher gimmick? examples:>Pack O Game: games in a box the size of a pack of bubble gum>Playte: reusing the box as the board (joining them magnetically of necessary)>Button Shy: games that fit in a wallet
>>96589129So what luck can do for you as a game designer...it can make it so that a broader audience can play a reasonable game against each other. In a game like Poker, for instance, anybody can beat an expert player for a single hand, though over an evening it’s much harder. There’s a lot of luck in the game, and obviously a lot of skill, and one of the reasons it's such a broad game is because anybody can compete against anybody, and although maybe they don't win in the long run, they have their little victories. Even a game like Scrabble—a very skill-intensive game—has quite a bit of luck. If you are a reasonable Scrabble player, you can beat an expert if you just happen to be dealt a good mixture of blanks and vowels.Lastly, luck can be leveraged into variety—that is, if you have uncertainty within the game, you can throw the game into states which players aren't used to, which can create variety.--Garfield the cat
>>96589129this a troll copypasta?
I'm enjoying City of Big Shoulderinos on BGA but I'm not sure about the mechanic that allows you to buy a stock and instantly sell it thus lowering the value, there's no reason not to do it, so everyone has to do it, it just seems retarded.
>>96588731Best art redo of an old game on the market. It's literally perfect.
>>96589129This is the most elaborate excuse I have read from someone who sucks at chess.
>>96589084Frickin awesome, bro. Did you make designs for the Lord of hundreds and the keepers?
>>96589129Yea, all games have luck but there's a difference between 0.1% and 50%, for example.
>>96588958>>96589037All comments from 2023 points towards some one hit wonder faggot and I with such powerful passive aggressive posts I have to assume it's either a massive faggot or a female designer. Given that there are like 2 (actually) female designers on this entire planet, it probably is some one hit wonder with megalomania. The designer of Earth, maybe?Fun game btw
>>96589261>Fun game btwTo be clear, I meant guess the designer. Just so noone things I'll say anything good about the absolute trash design that is earth

>>96588646> I remember a few years back once it hit 300 replys there was always one or two anons competing to get a new thread going. One of those two bakers. I'm still here, but baking OPs was something I had a unique opportunity to dedicate myself towards for those couple of years.Significant free time (lol college admin deskjob) and Photoshop coming pre-installed on my work PC meant I could play around with edits, theme TQs around the OP pic and the seasons, news, and/or thread conversations, and of course modify song lyrics. It was wholesome fun and I would work on baking several at a time if the creativity struck. Give myself a buffer, and I would always have material on hand. After going back to school and then starting a new career, that dead space to brainstorm and play around has largely vanished, and keeping up with threads and baking was not a source of enjoyment anymore, but an extra thing to do on a long list of stuff pressing down on me.If it stops being fun, and there are enough other stressors in life, why transform a pleasant activity into work?Ive still baked here and there when inspiration strikes and I get peace at home, but until things settle and I stop generally resetting everything into chaos and pandemonium each September, I am more than happy to leave OPs to other anons. Wasnt like I ever owned the general anyway. You guys are great and Im glad many anons step up and find their own voices and style. there will still be the annual autism feeding surveys. The spreadsheet gods demand data entry!
>>96589294Guess the designer is funEarth is trashApologies, half my posts are a complete mess for how tired I am, I keep starting new sentences in the midst of existing ones

>>96589515Damn. I was actually curious about Wingspan, but I cannot trust a game designer who does not like head-to-head abstracts.
>>96589549Wingspan and Wyrmspan are different designers.
>>96589524Oh my. This might be the one person in the world that not only played through charterstone but did so multiple timesHonestly, don't know what to think of designers that rate other designer's games. On one hand, sure, they are consumers as well and can and should have an opinion. On the other hand it seems so unprofessional to me that someone responsible for two mediocre but massively pushed games criticises other games' design. And being an "official" fan of your own games also strikes me as a very faggy move. Then again, I don't really mind all that very much. Just the attitude you'd expect for Stonemaier darlings
>>96589556Sorry, I meant to write Wyrmspan.
>>96589276>>96589209You should never do it in a linear stock game unless you 1.) need the immediate cash and/or 2.) are playing with the variant where stock price drops by the number of shares sold and/or 3.) you've emptied the treasury and you're dumping it. It makes sense sometimes to do it in a 3D market but it's so easy to get stock bumps in CoBS and Railways that you're not really hurting the owner and you selling yourself out of dividends.I've played CoBS like 50 times and I can count on one hand how many times I've sold shares and I don't think I've ever bought then sold on a turn to stock trash.
>>96589564>Honestly, don't know what to think of designers that rate other designer's games. The BGG system may be to blame regarding the ratings, but I don't know a single artist who does not have opinions about other works of their art. Good for them for expressing their opinion. However she's visibly shilling games from her game's publisher, so that's definitely a different approach from just having an opinion.
>>96588677> What is your favorite box art?Now that I think about it, there aren't that many that stand out. I think Oaths box art is absolutely fantastic and the polar opposit of how the game actually is. Also the colour scheme of La Famiglias box is very pleasing, especially the contrast between the idyllic scenery and the implied crime.>What is your favorite one hit wonder designer?Matus Kotry, the guy who did Alchemists. I WILL buy his stuff blindly. Deal with the Devil was innovative and cool but I felt like it wanted too much, had little interaction and staying power. He'll be back with something fantastic, I'm sure.>What is your favorite non-traditional theme? If a game takes place in a snowy/cold biome I am much more likely to check it out. I don't exactly know why, it's just comfy, even if it's fucking meltwater. The opposite is true for desert/sand themes
>>96589599I think it's inevitable to have an opinion, but it's an entirely different thing to have that opinion publicly visible to anyone. Personally, I'd be too humble as a newish designer. But I just saw that the linked one is specifically her non-designer account so I guess that's ok then I guess

>>96588677>What is your favorite box art?Eschaton. Shame the game and card art both suck.>What is your favorite one hit wonder designer?Dan Hallagan. You can love Obsession or hate Obsession but you cannot doubt that man's desire to throw everything he has into a single career defining game.>What is your favorite non-traditional theme?Semi-fringe historical eras like Cold War Germany, First English Civil War, revolutionary Mexico.
>>96589667>Pandemic at 9>Twilight Struggle at 3.5No wonder his game put me to sleep by just reading about them.
>>96589667Oh, you don't need to remind me. He caught lightning in a bottle with RftG, but the rest of his stuff is ok-ish to bad and doesn't excuse him being such a colossal faggot. ANd I'm not even talking about him rating superior designers games poorly
>>96589398>this is considered "aggression" in modern board gameslmao
>>96589609i guess you live in a snowy country
Are there any good irish designers? Has ireland made a good game?
>>96589765Call it what you want, but when 80% of your time is spent wondering "hey, how can I make my opponent's next turn as shitty as possible?", it is not exactly amicable gameplay.
>>96589900Reminder that there are people who unironically think the only legitimate form of interaction or aggression is punching each other in the facenot that Azul or Patchwork would be particularly aggressive games, mind
>>96589900>>96590049It's not aggression unless you attack your opponent.
>>96588958>hidden bad guy game>UM Excuse me, but just where do u get off asking me to BE the bad guy. Some grandstanding idiot, honestly. Which is a shame because second half of the review is kinda spot on, SH isn't very well designed and can get run by just a few power players.
>>96588677Goid TQs, OP>What is your favorite box art?Tricky thing. I appreciate simple but potent box covers. Your striking mauve in Pax Pamir or the suns corona on black in Sol.Then again Cosmic Frog is so rich in colours amd texture, along with the psychedelic font choice it grabs you and doesnt let go.>- What is your favorite one hit wonder designer?Colby Dauch. I've gotten so much mileage out of Summoner Wars. While he co designed that Battleship in space for Hasbro and Crystal Clans, its only SW that's brought him fame and elevated Plaid Hat into a company that could branch out into its other styles of games.>- What is your favorite non-traditional theme? The background noise in existing themes. Tons of merchant trading games exist, but not many go into the nitty gritty like John Company. Plenty of city building/planning stuff is on offer, but what Cross Bronx Expressway examines has me salivating.

>>96590170I still find it fascinating how there apparently (I say apparently because I haven't ever met anyone like that irl) are actual, living people who will not play a game because they have to look at their character card and might see a reptile fascist/hitler. Or implied slavery etcGenuinely puzzles me. I can't help but feel like they have not understood the concept of "game" use it only ever to express themselves as via the game, and if the game doesn't let them do that in precisely the way they want it's a shit game.

I guess I'll pick games themed around lesser-known specific incidents in history. Have been playing Voidfall solo after playing mage knight religiously for the past year or so. It’s fucking great. Haters be damned.

Will Dire Wolf fold and release another Dune Imperium Uprising Electric Boogaloo when the 3rd movie comes out? If they were smart they would do an expansion for JUST Uprising featuring the third movie, but with how fumbled Bloodlines was, I doubt they'd do the right thing.
>>96591049I like Imperium Horizons, though I like Star Trek Captains Chair more. If you haven’t played it yet, give that a go, even if you don’t like Star Trek. Voidfall, to me, has more viable strategies for how to approach a given scenario. I spend a LOT more time contemplating the turn than I would in Imperium. I like coming with ideas for tackling a turn, revising them, discarding them, etc. it’s why I also like Mage Knight. Voidfall is also more deterministic, which I don’t mind—I like optimizing the turn. One way to out it is that, in Imperium, you spend more time playing the game; in Voidfall, you spend more time thinking about what you’re going do. Personally, I also like games where I can leave them set up and play them over the course of a day/multiple days; it just works better for my life. Imperium is great though
