Heya Grog, I was wondering if any of you could help me track down something from the old days of White Dwarf. It's an Imperial fortress- a giant fuck-off cannon, built into a mountainside. I only saw the image once, and that was on my now-bricked phone. I think it might've been a starship macrocannon, or something? I distinctly recall the cutaway of the fortress had actual shell storage in there.

Fairly certain James dug up the concept again while he was rummaging for ideas on what that recent Kill Team 'season' was going to be about, and then decided he was going to make the giant cannon Even Bigger, because that's what 40k does.

I've got some RTB01 marines on the way, gonna strip them and give them the paint job they deserve. Did they ever make a painting guide for the classic RT crimson fists?

Is this a diorama or a drawing? That'd help narrow it down. I have a vague recollection of the kind of thing you mean.

You know I don't think there is. in the Painting Space Marines guide that came in a white dwarf there was ultramarines, salamanders, blood angels and space wolves to give an array of schemes. And I've skimmed various blanchitsu articles form the time, some even featuring the crimson fists, but they don't really give much of a guide of any kind.

But then the crimson fist scheme is so damn basic, it's like at best: a dark blue, mid blue, and light blue (or could be achieved by mixing from the mid blue), black, white, red, silver, bit of yellow in for the badges (and over white to undercoat for the red given how much of a pain the yellow and red paints were of the time to get bright colours with, not a problem now), and if you want to improve much of any of it get mixing paints because there's not that many to work with in the range in '87.

But don't be afraid to go advanced on techniques, use ink washes, or throw in using fineliner pens (especially for that really fine chequerboard) and other mixed media stuff as that's what Blanche would do.

Please paint him up and use him anyways. He'd look great in a unit of classic metal knights.

Once again sharing the RT magazine article compilation.

Working on a version two with a few new articles I've found and a cleanup of the formatting. Gonna be a while though, kids, school, and other stuff come first.

Yep I remember it. It was only in the USA White Dwarf, around the middle to end of third I'd say.

It was a two-tier game, with a 40k board with as you say, a Macrocannon built into a cliff, which was also shooting at I believe a concurrent Battlefleet Gothic game.

I'm British and I only know of it because a friend brought that exact issue back from the USA to our local GW and showed us it.

The various languages and regional versions of White Dwarf have had varying independence over the years, everything from their own articles to simply being translated. It would be nice to actually have a proper archive.

Sorry for being late and all- the one I'm thinking of was a drawing- a cutaway, side-on drawing of the 'facility' with a numbered map for the rooms and everything. Not for playability or anything, just to tell you what room was what.

This is the first I'm hearing of an actual gameboard using the idea- for 40k at least, I know a couple historicals have involved the Longue-sur-Mer batteries, but it certainly sounds fascinating!

Honestly, now I think on it, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the coastal guns were an inspiration for the macrocannon, in the same vein as 3rd Armageddon's being Operation Barbarossa.
