>TQorange is unironically the magic color for painting skin, it mixes well with everything and is a fantastic general basecoat. "Pale Skin" type paints are a trap in my experience and can ruin a paintjob if you overapply it and turn your model into a ghoul
Do you think we could use more topless marine options like the Eightbound?

>>96613709>And of all the possible tanks to be stuck in, a Leman Russ was probably the worst. People spoke of it as the Pride of the Imperium, the greatest battle tank in human history, the mainstay of the Great Crusade. Was it shit. A Leman Russ was a rolling deathtrap. Its tall profile was so notoriously awful that no commander ever wanted to be squadron leader – the only thing big enough to shield a Leman Russ during operations was another Leman Russ, so better to keep the command unit ahead of you for as long as you could. Its fragile tracks were exposed and its armour was a mess of easy-to-hit vertical planes. >The standard pattern sponson-bulges just presented another flat edge to destroy, another reason to be glad not to have them. The interior was noisy and prone to bursting into flames whenever a loader coughed too loudly. And, if you were truly unlucky enough to have those sponsons, there was only one escape hatch, right at the top of the main turret, and so the chances of getting out alive in case of all-too-likely disaster were practically zero.>No, whoever had designed the Leman Russ – Kaska had always assumed it wasn’t actually the primarch of the VI – was a moron. Or a sadist. Or both. The only things it had going for it were cheapness, mechanical reliability and a certain rugged survivability in numbers. The design was so brutally simple that the Imperium was able to churn them out by the million. It mattered less that each individual unit was a study in self-harm when you could overwhelm a battlefield with hundreds of them. And a front-mounted lascannon at least could keep firing as long as its power packs held a charge, which made running out of shells somewhat less of a disaster.
>>96614284Honestly I think admins need to allow for more images to be posted per thread on tg.After all part of the fun here is showing off our models. Even if they do get drowned out by memes and reaction images.
>>96614313Still are in fantasy, at least nominally, but they were never a thing in 40k.
>>96614327>Still, all in all, the crews had few illusions about the tanks they rode into war. Deathboxes, they were called, and homewreckers, and other, earthier, names too. Infantry troopers would occasionally look askance at them, jealous of all that thick armour they had around them, but a Leman Russ tanker knew how fragile it all was really, and how going out to a las-blast was far preferable to being burned alive or buried under a wall of mud or suffocated by trapped engine smoke.

>>96614301It doesn't work like that, really nurgle embodies both extremes of his domains, for example, blending life and death of course since that mix is chaotic and extreme it ends up being deadly and incompatible with what people consider goodin chaos, there can be too much of a good thing
>>96614281Not orange exactly, but most flesh paints have some yellow and red in them which make orange of course. VMC Beige Red is my favourite colour for base coating flesh, then highlight by mixing in a pale flesh colour then use a very thin reddy/purpley/burgundy colour as a filter/wash to add life.
>>96614247>TQYou can make shadows look a lot more interesting by adding hints of different tones to them. For example, purple works well for gold and turquoise, blue for steel/silver and burgundy etc. It's particularly effective for skin because irl skin has a huge number of different tones in it, varying from purple, pink and even green.

>>96614322>>96614377Nah muscles are great and the fact 40K is lacking in them is a fucking crime.
>>96614327>>96614334Something tells me the author hates imperium, but can't refuse a paycheck for writing about it.
Was becoming the Dark King part of the Golden Path originally and the Emperor just turned away from it at the last moment the same way Paul Atreides did in Messiah when he chose not to embrace the destiny of Kwisatz Haderach? Does that make Abaddon the Leto II necessary evil of the setting to ensure human ascension?
>>96614390I doubt Chris Wraight hates the Imperium, he just likes it when things are grimdark and shitty
>>9661438340k isn't lacking in them. They were posted above with the WE models. There are plenty of examples from other factions that include them, too. Got my ass wrecked by Custodes last week but it was my first game back after taking a 5 month break (had a baby). This was also my first game at the local store using tournament terrain. I 100% understand why it plays better but I really do prefer my scratch built or 3d printed stuff even if it does make LOS harder to block. All in all pretty good experience and my opponent was a pretty cool guy. How have your games been going?

Let's make a memelist to celebrate the new terminators. Starting with Lysander, an ancient and a 10 man brick of assault terminators with hammer and shield inside a spartan we got 850 points already. Then the Mandrakes did a weird ass ritual that pushed the invasion back into the Gate because even Daemons don't fuck with voodoo shadow magic. In the aftermath Vect re-appeared but faith in his powerbase diminished greatly.

>>96614641I felt like a smart guy noticing it at first, but looking more into it, it’s not exactly a secret that Imperium tanks are based on WW1 British designs. Back then, a infantrymen with a molotov cocktail was a serious threat to a tank, would make sense that Imperium tanks would have similar flaws.

>>96614658Nice, there's just something visually appealing about firstborn
>>96614586Your archon survives in two of the results. They both allow for your archon to lead his Kabal from the shadows; either while feigning subservience to Vect or hiding from him. It'd be a cool direction to take it.
>>96614746They remind me more of a Toy than a model
>playing Darktide instead of painting my modelsforgive me star children
I firmly believe 11th would improve by a lot just by going back to the additive S/T table and old AP system. Currently strength breakpoints have tons of gaps which make weapon balance a mess and rending AP makes armour so useless things need invuls or fnp to actually feel tough and sometimes not even that. Vastly reducing the wound and dame numbers would also help with keeping breakpoints sensible.
>>96614327>>96614334Honestly this makes sense. The Imperial Guard runs on quantity over quality. It makes sense that their tanks would essentially use the same logic. The T-34 of Warhammer 40k essentially.
>>96614679Ah I was just dumb with picking secondaries (first time playing the new mission cards). I would have tabled him (stopped at turn 4) but he did a great job playing secondaries while I just went full retard trying to force him off objectives. Never played Custodes before and I think it would be a much closer game now that I know how they work.
>>96614327>The only things it had going for it were cheapness, mechanical reliability>mechanical reliabilityYet the rest of this homebrew text goes on to describe how shit they are
>>96614767>Guardsmen cannot damage plague terminators
>>96614759Honestly it's the opposite for me, primaris always just seem like an armoured action man or action figure.
>>96614441Played Final Day against CSM (pactbound). Lictors are just stupid good, and in the game one somehow managed to take down a forgefiend. He had a big possessed brick and a big chosen brick with Fabius in it (pictured) that failed a 6" charge along with the legionaries next to them also failing a short charge, which was really bad for him. But his possessed brick traded for a lictor (oof) and his warp talons just couldn't contest properly, since a 5-man warp talon unit just absolutely can't afford charging into a lictor. We talked afterwards, and while it's a tricky matchup (he just gets so massively activation-locked by the huge amounts of units I was bringing) he probably would have done better if he didn't fail that charge and pushed his forgefiends up more aggressively and used them to clear the lictors off, since I would have had trouble responding to that, rather than letting me pile Aberrants and metamorphs into his infantry hammers.
>>96614808And of course I forget the damn picture.
>>96614735Bloated how? Seems like a pretty simple ruleset once you get a few games under your belt.
>Imperium tanks are T-34’s>Necron Tanks are Tigers>Tau tanks are Shermans >Ork tanks are (insert any Italian or Japanese tank)
>>96614795Scaling back the S/T breakpoints means dg termies don't need to have +3T over a regular marine to actually jump a breakpoint.
>>96614697I wonder what its like to be one of the bird boys.
>>96614567Just vent a hose out your window?
>>96614767knight meta would be way worse if guard armies cannot damage them
>>96614827They would be able to damage them with actual antitank weapons. The current breakpoints being so ass that it's more reliable to kill tanks with lethal hits lasguns is degenerate and an obvious design flaw.
>>96614827Oh no, armies actually have to take anti tank to deal with tanks rather than relying on mass fire chip damage.
>>96614767Your belief is wrong and retarded.
>>96614838You should try 30k, it might open your eyes to the things we've lost.
>>96614849>you should try the dead game
>>96614767>rending AP makes armour so useless things need invuls or fnp to actually feel toughAs opposed to things needing invulns, fnp and re-rollable cover saves to feel tough because AP just straight up removes all saves and AP2 and 1 is common out the ass?
>>96614853Oh you're just here to be inflammatory.Do you even play 40k, or am I right to assume you're just a secondary?
>>96614836you'll never have enough anti tank to beat knights and then also deal with hoarde armies with the same list
>>96614838How? Do you actually enjoy that weapons need increasingly high S to get to the next weapon making S6 to S9 the exact same against tanks for example? How are you supposed to properly balance them with so much dead space while also not making them completely destroy other brackets unintentionally?
>Vehicles are already very strong this edition>"Vehicles should be even tankier and have less counterplay!"?
>>96614855You work off the premise of AP2 being spammable when it shouldn't. AP2 should also have so little RoF it won't work against anything but tanks or extremely elite infantry, which is its intended target.
>>96614836It takes like 300 lasgun shots WITH lethal hits to bring down a Knight. This is not as big of an issue as you're making it.
>>96614860Which is why playing the objective has always been the most consistent way of beating knights when they're not in the main meta.
>>96614867This would change nothing for vehicles but i would make antitank weapons way less efficient at killing infantry, giving you an actual reason to take both to diversify potential targets.
>>9661476711th needs to move to d12 honestly.
How are your collage pieces going?
>>96614877Not really. Would do the same thing extending the toughness limit did in 10th: creating dead space between the actual important breakpoints.
>>96614860You've never beaten knights by tabling them. Not even now. That changes nothing.
Making a prediction right now:>The Tau’s 5th expansion sphere against Ultramar will largely be a failure>The Tau might take a few border worlds, but Guilliman will draw so many resources to defend his homeland that it’ll turn into a heavy war of attrition and the Tau will stop their advance, deciding it’s not worth the cost>Meanwhile 6th expansion sphere set to happen concurrently with the 5th will be a success>With most resources and attention drawn towards Ultramar the Tau will be able to take hundreds of worlds with relatively little opposition on that front>Things settle down afterwards as the Tau move to consolidate their gains, and the Ethereals decide to try to work with the Tau’va against newly encroaching daemons
>>96614767>rending AP makes armour so useless things need invuls or fnp to actually feel tough and sometimes not even thatThat was more true before they changed it.
I think they should go back to 7th ed, remove invisibility, and only use 6th ed and pre-necron codexes.
>>96614908Stopped reading after seeing the word tau
>>96614908My prediction is that the Tau will have a single shout-out in 11th stating they're still getting ready to attack Ultramar but they won't actually do anything yet, and they'll just get a new upgrade sprue for Crisis Suits to use before being immediately forgotten for the rest of the edition.
>>96614882Beautiful.

The imperium supposedly adds hundreds of planets every year so a million worlds really is just meant to mean "a fuck ton." There are probably much more than that. It's not even really an empire, more like a culture that spreads and sometimes pays tithes to Terra, sometimes not
>>96614930I don't know what those are, unless you're talking about death company?
>>96614908I assume that entire subplot was just an excuse to introduce Guilliman to the Tau and they won't invade Ultramar
>>96614696fair point. I just have a fools hope Vect is primarch tier as a melee monster, while also having a supscious looking personal bodyguard grotesque that is overly large that also has primarch stats but has plasuible deniability of being a Jaggy
>>96614940My bad yes D company
>>96614910No because AP2 and AP3 were infinitely less common than AP-1 and AP-2 are now. Even 4+ saves were useful because the vast majority of small arms weren't better than AP5. And if tou had worse armour than that you had cheap numbers and cover saves to make up for it. Right now armour less valuable because even a basic bitch bolt pistol is moving your 2+ save to a 3+.
What are some Chaos Space Marine novels without Abaddon? And I do mean no mention of him at allFor like 2 books in a row now the story just stops, has an obligatory chapter where it jerks off Abaddon (which feel like they were written by the faggot himself) before continuing on with the actual storyIt just completely takes me out of whatever book I’m reading

>>96614908Gulliman was setting up Ultramar to be self sufficient after he left re-establishing the office of the Tetrarchs and stationing ten chapters who he told they could do what was necessary to secure their assigned realms. Calgar was as well felt guilty that the Plague Wars had reached a point that Gulliman had to detour from the Indomitus Crusade to save them. If the Tau expansion is ever explored, the Ultramarines and the other Chapters in Greater Ultramar would likely make a point to not rely on Gulliman’s help, even if it was availible.

>>96614986The Imperium is basically the Russia of the setting. Massive empire, large population, but very underdeveloped and poor relative to its size.
>>96614727you only get better at painting by painting, not planning to paint and measuring over and over.
>>96614558It is, but it gets even better when you use it for specular rather than edge highlighting, and can then skip the basecoating phase entirely. Start small light and end big dark is way more forgiving in almost every situation.
>>96615034I’d say there are more imperial worlds but that’s different from them being worlds the “imperium” can mobilize or exploit. Countless planets with a population of a few billion that have the Imperial Cult as a religion and some legends about the “emperor’s angels” but have essentially no contact with the administration on Terra. Ironically the psychic awakening letting the emperor do more is probably the first sign many of these worlds have seen of the imperium in millennia. Imagine being a normie on such a planet and then randomly miracles from your parent’s religion start happening out of nowhere
>>96615008Anon nobody is killing vehicles by rolling 300 6s. And besides, making the table additve doesn't mean making things immune, you can extend the 6s like 2s already are. It just means breakpoints happen every point increase instead of needing double.
>>96615065Vehicles should be immune to all infantry fire accept the few obvious ones.
>>96614309>your models are a direct window into what kind of person you areYou know, now that I think about it, it would be a neat idea to try and guess each others characters based on our models
>>96615037Painting is a lot like grinding experience. Each model gives exp and finishing 10 models that give you 100exp each will level you up quicker than one model that takes 10 times as long to finish but gives 300exp. But at the same time eventually diminishing returns will mean those 100exp models are now only giving you 5exp and you need to paint models with higher level techniques to keep levelling.
>>96615059From what I remember the Macharius Crusade was the last major expansion of Imperial Territory, the Indomitus Crusade was mostly about regaining territory immediately lost following the fall of Cadia. They certainly are still gaining worlds, but usually regaining lost territory or discovering un-utilized planets within their existing borders.
>>96615071I agree. But in practice it doesn't really change anything, especially if you remove shit mechanics like being able to give lethal hits or dev wounds to weapons that don't have it innately. Having breakpoints every point is much more important and impactful.

In a previous thread anon posted this >>96614136or example>drew marked for death, one of the targets was a land raider that he hurt a bit but didn't kill, more importantly it was out of position and would get mobbed (and destroyed) in the next turn, perfect for keeping the card>gets rid of the card because he didn't kill anything>bunch of stuff deep strikes in on a flank to reinforce mortarion and 2 daemon princes, they will steal a point off of him as those models are easily gonna kill 5 slaanesh seekers sitting on ut>could rapid ingress his bloodthirster behind them (shadow of chaos) where it can't currently be charged, so that if the seekers get charged, it can heroically intervene onto the point and put some hurt in>rapid ingresses it right in mortarions face, ready to get charged----- I'm noob, could anybody please explain to me more on this tactical move? Here's how i understand it:- Opponent can charge his slaanesh seekers after charging it- That guy could charge that opponent's unit immediately after it charges, by using the Heroic Intervention- But charge via Heroic Intervention doesn't give Fight First. This means, that Bloodthrister can fight only after opponent finishes attacks (if he survives).- So it means, that opponent will kill not only Seekers, but also that guy's Bloodthirster. Is that correct?I mean, to me it looks, like Bloodthirster can't just hit the opponent, he needs to survive for that. What's the point, if your could rapid ingress your Bloodthirster somewhere in a safe place, in your turn then come closer and charge and not be in danger of dying before fight.

>>96615145Nope >In general, Trazyn had not been much interested in humans. He collected them, of course, he collected everything. But he considered them on the same level as orks, or various kinds of carnivorous algae. Their spread across the cosmos had destroyed so many more interesting civilisations, and since the rise of the Emperor their culture had an utter sameness that bored him. If Trazyn cared about the mere ability to propagate and spread, he’d spend his eternity collecting bacteria. Just because a thing was successful and ubiquitous did not make it fascinating – it just made it common. But the Heresy changed all that. Before it was all colonisation and settlement. This, this was history, this was drama. Betrayal. Struggle. Brother fighting brother across the gulf of the stars. >>96615076this is accurate because painting is done in 'stages'fully assemble or sub assemblies > properly sanding away burrs and filling gaps > basing > priming > base layer > get any dry brushing done > base layer hard to reach places first > full base layer > layering > shading > layering again > edge highlighting.each time you fully cycle through this you get better, if you only cycle through it once you are still a pisslow shit paintlet grub.

can someone redpill me on the stormraven gunship? how do i use it effectively ? am i relying on it mostly to transport my dreadnoughts or to lay down missile covering fire ?
It’s funny to me how mad people get over the imperium and primarchs being the main characters That has always been the case. Old codexes were written from the imperium POV
>>96615420Spooky is so subjective, seems like this month will be a paint w/e you feel like edition, which I guess I am ok with. I only got 5 days to build and paint my Knight for this month tho...
>>96615417How is that relevant? So it is in 30k and it works great.
>>96614441>How have your games been going?I've been grinding out some needguard as it's the only votann detachment I can comfortably play, since the others are all hyper-focused on one unit type and I lack the unit types. It's been alright, I've had two overwhelming victories against CSM and Knights and one loss at the hands of Tau. All have been pretty fun overall, but I'm honestly losing steam since I'm essentially playing the index detachment. I'll be printing/building and painting another landfort and sagitaur so I can play the transport detachment soon (after I'm done with my chorfs) so hopefully that'll be a bit more variety.
>>96615348>>96615354"Don't like to think about" is radically different from "downplay the importance of". There is no Necron that would consider the War in Heaven to be lesser than the Heresy in terms of scale or significance. It is the conflict that defined them as a people.
>>96615452Didyou woop those Knights or was it close at all? I think if GW put more effort in Combat Patrol or s Border Actions style game (without the terrain “requirements”) it would be a big hit like Spearhead.

>>96615476My opponent couldn't make a saving throw to save his life. Blew 3 knights on turn 2 and the game was basically over after that. Knights seem to always be in a state of "overwhelming victory or overwhelming defeat">>96615503I want to, but I really don't want to run the 10 hearthguard I printed out at 85% scale thinking the STLs were oversized, making them tiny in comparison. I've experienced the same thing in needguard you described. The army rules is definitely about hoarding YP until you get into FT and then you have too many to know what to do with. I'm hoping that'll be a bit different in other detachments. Hearthband is definitely a strong contender for my next detachment.
>>96615515They dont need to put effort into it people will buy 40k regardless
>>96615523okay
>>96615515Why is spearhead better? They seem the same to me.
>>96615521Brutal, but I'm sure it was fun blasting those titanic units into smithereens
>>96615539Spearhead is better because AoS proper is as dogshit as 10e, but AoStards have better taste and are more willing to play side games until the main game is fixed
>>96615572How does that make spearhead better than combat patrol?
>>96615573It has better rules
>>96615550It always is in a sense, but seeing the lights in your opponent's eyes die a little inside when he watches half his army go away in one turn is never fun. So is the rest of the game afterwards when you decide to roll it out while your opponent stops playing objectives and goes straight for kills knowing he's going to lose anyway, making the game incredibly boring. It's why I dislike playing against knights. It's either not fun for you or not fun for your opponent. if the guy I was playing against wasn't a great friend of mine I wouldn't have been facing that army.

>>96615579Yea I rolled a 6 for devastating Wounds with my Thundercoil harpoon and my opponent just looked so dejected, felt kinda bad...
>>96615593Lots.
>>96615573Spearhead uses a smaller board with less terrain and fewer models with preset lists you can buy in a single box and has a much shorter commitment time with games under an hour. It's got chaotic twists every turn to shake things up and a catch-up mechanic based on influencing those twists. And you get a random hand of strategies/secondary objectives each turn and there are tactical considerations when using them for each purpose. There's also four different boards and four different twist decks. It's just very dynamic and has a lot of replay value even with fixed lists. You get some minor customization options too like picking a different army rule or enhancment for each game that can give the same list a slightly different focus.
>>96615622That sounds like shit. Games need more terrain and a ruleset that actually makes use of it properly, not less.

An even then, AoS Chaos is spookier than 40k chaos. Unless you go hard with conversions and do LotD marines or something, its not easy to be halloween spooky for 40k.BA can serve as vampires and Wulfen as werewolves though.
About how many dice will I need for an infantry heavy 2k point guard army?
>>9661551540K without terrain is just an invitation for disaster no matter the format
>>96615539AoS has advanced and simplified rules. Spearhead uses the simplified rules, a special deck for gameplay, simplified terrain rules, and other accommodations for the smaller gameplay mode. Combat Patrol doesn’t really make these accommodations for smaller points games, hell a reinforcements rule like Spearhead has could probably help the infantry heavy boxes with low overall points cost.
>>96615660I wish. Warmachine has much better rules. It also has more detailed terrain rules and works better with them since models can move and act more dynamically.
>>96614247No one got any tips since y'all own no models
>>96615684You fellas might be too young to remember but 40k operated fine with a lot fewer L-shaped ruins for many years by having other rules that limited shooting severely like not split firing or pre-measuring or scatter templates or other kinds of terrain or turn 1 night fighting or small arms and incidental shooting not wounding big hulls.
What are you planning to buy next in terms of models /40kg/ ?

>>96615675Uh, no. Combat patrol does not do the deck of secondaries that also double as interaction with the board, or have twists, or have specific boards and terrain. Its also just as deadly as normal 40k for some stupid reason whereas spearhead is less deadly than 40k or aos
>>96615679>In 40k you have maybe daemons and CSM.Eh, I think stealthy Tyranids are close enough to the classic Alien Xenomorph to count and Necrons are obviously inspired by Terminator, which is partially a horror movie. Here's the fifth edition reference table straight from the core rulebook, even hunter-killers aren't AP2, you need dedicated special/heavy weapons like melta/las/plas and remember there's no 300 different kinds of Aspect Marine with bespoke weaponry, just tactical/devastator/assault squads
All this knight talk has made me think about knights. And then I think about how few models I have to paint for a 2k army. Am I wrong anons? I think I'm getting knight pilled.

GW should release a new 40k video game where you play as Marines fighting Cultists except one of players is actually also an Alpha Legionaire and the others have to figure out who it is and kill them before they can wipe out the rest of the squad
>>96616268on tabletop they have the same ROF as boltguns also take that with a grain of salt because the fluff changes wildy between different writers and if you take everything anyone writes at face value then you have plague marines being stabbed to death with normal combat knives by catachans.>>96616269A 10 man marine squad can getPlasma pistolPlasma gunPlasma cannonalso pretty sure veteran squads can take basically whatever they want and yes a fucking plasma cannon on a dreadnought will mow down an entire squad of marines if it doesn't scatter

the reason people dog on people who glaze midhammer is because when you go "the old strength/toughness table doesn't work at all at higher toughness values and with so many more units in the game it won't work" they just go "nobody tries to wound things on 6's anyway" showing a complete lack of understanding of even the most basic way people play 40k now. They'll go "We can just have less terrain and less big guns and the game will be more balanced like the good old editions" and simply ignore you when you point out that Tau, Eldar and Imperial Guard have at many points pre-8th just started tabling people turn 2 in a ton of editions. They'll shit and piss their pants at the added complexity of each unit having a datasheet ability but then pretend that certain unit types having upwards of 13 USRs applying on them (including sub-types that made you check multiple unit types) all in different parts of a book were easy to understand and play with. They'll fail to use cover in 10th, bitch about rending AP, and then complain about things being too lethal in one of the only editions where both players will geniunely have units on the board at endgame if they both know what they're doing. They'll insist that modern lethality is too high and named characters too needed only to then ignore the fact that tanks used to constantly get oneshot and custom-made 300 point wargeared up units lost all their wounds at once while Monsters remained broken. They're almost always nogaems who want to go back to the time they were teenagers and they will call you any number of names to avoid internalizing the fact. They gravitate to the notoriously weak 5th ed tactical as a beacon of balance because that was what they played when they were 12 and try very hard to not remember the flying lash princes or vindicator spam or Dreads being cucked by Forgeworld finesharts which would inevitably become a problem now that they and the people they are playing against have fully developed brains.

The overinflated toughness values of vehicles wouldn't even need to exist if they went back to the old table ans AVs so no one is considering that. The old S/T table was super deliberately crafted to avoid anything going above Toughness 7 (Big Daemons and Nid Monsters were T6) because at T8 most weapons wouldn't work and you'd have entire armies where significant portions of their units couldn't do much of anything.Going back to the old S/T table doesn't make S/T more meaningful, it just reduces granularity because you're stuck with 4 tougness values that you can seriously use (3, 4, 5, 6) before you end up in situations like "Killed your anti tank gg shake my hand"

>>96616218Looks ace. Love the rhino helmet.
>>96616218Looks cool but what is it supposed to be?
>>96616737Alright fine, I'll address some more weak points. The entire first act is plodding and miserable, with stilted, clumsy prose that would find stiff competition from middle school creative writing excercises. You don't really get a sense of what Calth looks like, or the difference between the various locales, like the Nibenay Bay or whatever the fuck the port was and the triforce museum, and what little expository framing is written is both sparse and underwhelming. I mentioned all of this. One of Dan's biggest problems, that I, again, mentioned in the previous thread, is that he can't figure out how to seperate third person omnipotent narration with inner monologues, and tries to write both at the same time, meaning they blend together and you can't tell where inner thoughts end and the narration begins. This has the unfortunate but hilarious effect of making Dan look like a fucking caveman when he's trying to characterize Sevatus or whatever as a boltgun-toting meathead. The characterization sucks; all the marines basically think the same and act the same, and aren't described visually in any detail beyond Sullus being old. When there's 15 different marines you have to keep track of and you can only tell them apart by their fake latin names, they blend together in a haze, and when two thirds of the book are dependent on knowing who these chucklefucks are, reading the passages becomes a chore. The Oll and John Grammaticus stuff in the middle is like a brick fucking wall that completely destroys what pacing the book was starting to achieve right as it hits the ground running, to the point where it stumbles and falls afterward. Again, I mentioned this in the previous thread but you either forgot, didn't read it, or filed this completely valid criticism of a huge, glaring flaw of the book as a "nitpick". It's not a nitpick. It's a gaping fucking axe wound in the middle of a book that's already struggling.Cont.

You keep contradicting yourself>There is no granularity, just dead space where weapons with S5-7 wound on the exact same rollS5 has an advantage into Astartes with wounding on 3s but it struggles into medium tanks (T10) by wounding on 6s and isn't the greatest against hyper elites like Custodes because it's also wounding on 5's.S6 hits a great breakpoint where it wounds T3 on 2s (Melting GEQ and elves), T4 and 5 on 3s, and T6s on 3s while also now being able to wound T11 on a 5 instead of a 6.S7 ups that by managing to hit the hardest tanks (T12) on 5s and hyper elites like Custodes on 3s. Each of the strength values provides a noticable increase into one unit type or another and if you're building a balanced list, the difference between S5, S6 and S7 are pretty important. Out of three (3) random values you said have no granularity, you can see that each of them has a different role and improves as they increase. Important breakpoints are hitSomehow you say this has no granularity, then fully admit that you think the game should go down to a whopping 4 toughness values, which is the definition of reduced granularity. This is exactly what I mean when I say you "people" don't even understand the game. You call what is objectively granularity "no granularity" and then praise squishing the game down into 4 values.

>>96616737>>96616916The Word Bearers are portrayed as token villains at best; their characterization as basically cackling madmen, while servicable, is underlined by hackneyed attempts to make them look "misguided" or "bitter" or "in service of a master plan". These abortive thrusts of backstory are so weak that the book would've honestly been better off without them. The rest of Oll's personal journey is pretty pointless and Bale and Krasst are basically fucking wasted characters, which is a shame because usually the guardsmen are the coolest characters in bolter porn. Arqitus or whatever the servitor's name was used to better effect even though he had much less written about him. You could've cut out the entire Oll plotline and the book would've been improved. All in all the book just comes off as amateurish. Again, I've read better ERP sessions. If this is the best BL has to offer I don't want any more.>>96616936I agree. At the end of the day I don't even care if the book is shit or not; I knew it was shit and was happy to be proven right, but the whole excercise has not improved my life in any way. I guess I felt like I owed the book a chance out of some sick sense of duty, or an obligation to objectivity. >>96616960To be fair, cutting the Oll section and condensing the first act would make the book a fairly brisk read. But with those two it just feel stilted and awkward. At the end of the day, I can at least say I've read a Horus Heresy novel, and can comfortably conclude that I would like to read no more.

>>96616928You'll realize that's still two breakpoints, exactly the same as the old table, but now you have dead space between the +1 and the x2 where those increases mean absolutely nothing. There's no extra granularity, just stats bloat. It doesn't add anything to the game nor offer any additional design space. It just makes breakpoints more awkward and weapons to have shit balance when an assault cannon and a multimelta wound on the same roll against a tank.

A lot of Xenos anti-infantry ends up being S6 as well - Elves have Disintergrator Cannons and Shuriken cannons which are S6 D2, Assault Cannons are S6, Wraith claws are S6 (Hell, part of the reason Wraiths are so tanky is because T6 W4 is a uniquely annoying breakpoint to hit). >>96617142why would you need to learn any other?
How would you design a non-Imperium human faction? I don't mean abhuman like the votann that revived the squats, I mean "appear like baseline human" faction that has been cut off from the imperium or was never part of it. Remember they have to have a "dark" gimmick I was thinking about this because I would like more examples of the Imperium dealing with humans that their ideology says have to be brought into compliance

>>96617297Some of my Wolves
>>96617323I was thinking about maybe having them be a psyker focused faction. Maybe their homeworld had some necron tech or other macguffin that suppressed the warp to a degree, and they unknowingly evolved to be more psychic. So when they started spreading out the rate of psykers were much higher and they tended to be more powerful. Their civilization came to rely on psykers despite the dangers, and has a low level of tech in general but some unique psychic shit they created to use/amplify their abilities. When the great rift opened many of the technologies and techniques they used to keep pyskers in check became less effective, and they began to be heavily pressed by Chaos
>>96617127Tactical Squad bolters and Storm Bolters are just bad, I don't know what you're on about since the basic gunline unit for Marines is an flat better profile paired with an ability that makes it even better. >>96617454'were not made' does not mean can't.Bolters were not made to kill other Marines and are kind of shit at it.>I did not need to see the massive shape of Markog to know that this was the Dolorous Guard; altered though their forms were, the colour and nature of their armour was similar enough to his that the resemblance was obvious. Both they and we had half a second to take in the enemy arrayed against us, and then the shooting started. This was an exponentially more intense, more brutal affair than the fight in which we had just been engaged. >>>Bolt-shells were never designed to pierce ceramite, because back when the weaponry was first conceived there was no notion that humanity’s enemies would ever be wearing such armour. In the millennia since, the Imperium had been hamstrung by its own refusal to embrace progress, and renegades such as we now faced – or indeed, such as ourselves – were largely limited by what weapons they could scavenge from their former masters. Much like my chainsword, bolt weaponry was more than sufficient for most purposes to which it was ever going to be put, but lacked the specialism to be similarly effective against the armour of the one wielding it.
>Storm Bolters2 shots strength 4 AP1 Rapid Fire 2In Terminator hands, it is also a Pistol/Assault.
>>96617461Yeah but sooner or later you need to at least be in contact with Chaos entities/groups to live without the Imperium.
