Figure out what army you want to get and build a list for them.For books start with Ian Watson's books, then Inferno! and Warhammer Monthly and then go on to Gaunt's Ghouls which is the first "real" black library novel. I wouldn't bother though, the game's writing is pretty formulaic and the minis are super expensive.

If you want to start painting, start with a single infantry squad or character and make sure the hobby side is something you actually enjoy. Don't buy from GW directly if you can avoid it, everything they have can be found cheaper on eBay or Amazon. Wahapedia has all the rules on it for free. Don't let the negativity on /tg/ get to you. If you think 40k is cool, enjoy it.

If you mean the hobby then the best way to do it is just open up the Games Workship Warhammer website and scroll through all the factions until you find one who you like most of the models for it aesthetically.Then you go look up their lore a bit and maybe even a little bit about how they play.If that sounds appealing to you, you buy ONE basic troops box (not a big discount box) and some painting supplies and you try assembling and painting one little ten man unit.If you really enjoyed the process of working on that first box, then you look at discount bundle options. If you didn't, then go back to the store and start looking at other factions.
