Fun fact about halflings!
-They're short
-They're fat
-They're legally distinct and NOT owned by the Tolkien estate
-In 5e they have the ability to reroll 1's on checks, which isn't that impressive because only faggots believe in critical failures
-In AD&D they're restricted to only fighter and thief classes, and they could only reach 6th-level fighter, so playing a thief or a multi-class are the only viable options
-Halflings have a slower walking speed, making people who play halflings fucking bellends
-Despite this halflings are so cute that I still play them when the party needs a rogue/thief

Also, this is firmly a D&D thread, but halflings can be found in other RPGs like Pathfinder or WFRP. If you want to discuss halflings in these settings you are doing it wrong, but I can't stop you.
>>
Do they get Darkvision or Infravision? Because Dwarves do. And back in AD&D they could be fighters, thieves AND clerics.
>>
>>96625664
Not by default, but darkvision is such an easy ability to gain that it means nothing

Why are you so prickly on the source of your halflings?
>>
>>96626203
I want to make a Halfling thread but I don't want it to be a no-game thread. As I said, this is a D&D thread, but I can't stop you if you post other halflings.

What made them legally distinct from Hobbits? They always seemed like hobbits to me

While the Tolkien estate owns the idea of "hobbits" they don't own the idea of "very short guys" which is effectively what halflings are. Trademarks and copyright only go so far, and ideas that are simply so generic cannot be copyrighted. So instead of "hobbits" they just became "a race of short humanoids with hairy feet and stocky builds, they are very adept thieves" which is just the description of a hobbit, with the thief thing being a direct parody of Bilbo Baggins himself, but it's also generic enough that the Tolkien estate can't really claim it.

How do you feel about the Talenta halflings from Eberron?
>>
>>96626853
Are they like the “cannnibal” halflings from dark sun?
>>
>>96625630
I'd like to play a Halfling someday. Any advice?

Also for some reason i want to design power armor that I hobbit could pilot like a mech
>>
>>96626876
They're nomadic, dinosaur-riding barbarians. They wear masks, tame raptors, live in open fields, do hunter-gatherer shit, they're frequently hired as mercenaries, etc.
There's also urbanized halflings who left the plains, mostly to get involved in one of the two Halfling affiliated Dragonmarked Houses, but they're more generic. A consequence of having traded their own cultural identity for the broader Khorvaire culture.

Love these li'l niggas like you wouldn't believe, personally I like to imagine them a little more animalistic (pic not to scale)
>>
>>96626853
I think they're one of those "oh look at us, our [x] are so different!!!" takes and I just find it all so tiresome now that I can't enjoy them.
>>
>>96626528
>>96626602
They changed halflings to look more like kenders in 3e, too, to the point where they started wearing boots.
Because they're TOTALLY not hobbits, at least for a few more years.

Forbidden Lands (naturally) had a but more cynical view of Halflings

Dark Sun dnd had them as cannibals but other than that I know nothing. Would like to know more about that.

I do have a couple of Muh Setting ideas for halflings, but I don't know they're that interesting

I'll be the judge of that

something about this art makes me think the artist does unforgivable porn.
>>
>>96629554
You would be correct! Don't look up Mossa's 40k beastwoman art. Or do, I'm not a cop.
>>
>>96629554
WH40k fanbase screaming to the stars about heresy yet one of their most prominent artists is a complete piece of shit degenerate. The golden rule always applies: only autists, furries, fascists and/or alphabet soup people like 40k.
>>
>>96629148
Yeah I know, but it illustrates what I'm going for. Ears closer to the top of the head to resemble burrowing mammals and paw-like feet as a twist on the traditional tufted feet.

>>96629554
He does a lot of stuff.
>>
>>96625630
Halflings were interesting in LOTR but have never, in any single edition of D&D or any other game line, been done right. It's a shame too because they could easily offer an interesting point of contrast to most settings.
>>
>>96634465
like how and what?

>Forbidden Lands (naturally) had a but more cynical view of Halflings
goblin/halfling dichotomy is what sold the setting to my group

not him but there is a nice world between "the same" and "'different for the sake of different" in which ideally most things should be

I like this much better actually. Reminds me of Orlans from PoE, they were kinda cute like that too.

40k has no prominent artists besides official studios.

Degenerates turn EVERYTHING into shit, from ponies to warhammer. It doesn't mean it's warhammer's fault, nothing is safe unless you burn them and their works on a pyre.

That pic reeks of old school tumblr energy.

>goblin/halfling dichotomy
Could you elaborate on that? There doesn't seem to be a lot of Forbidden Lands info readily available online
>>
>>96626528
Nothing at all.
>>
>>96634465
How would you know what the right way to imagine things is?
>>
>>96637127
let's just say that in Forbidden Lands goblins live in the woods that are isolating halfling territories and are essentially guarding them from outside dangers
MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD FOR GM EYES ONLY!
halflings and goblins are essentially the same kin, goblins can be born to halfling parents and halflingы can be born to goblin parents roughly 50/50. In such cases at birth they are swapped to be raised in appropriate communities
there is a religion related legend to why things are the way they are
>>
I want to like Halflings, but 4E was the better height for one. The general version of them is just weird. You don't really think of it much, but seeing them near normal people makes it really weird.
