"I try to create a lot of situations in which the player has to face small but crucial choices. My device is 'one good for one evil'. Anyone else pledging to not buy any games in 2026?I've already started, although I do have a couple games I pledged for earlier that probably won't be here until next year (sniper elite expansion, fcm special edition non-mini version)
>>96626788>Which designers got better with age and which ones got worse?Corey Konieczka got better, you can see him grow game to game. Every Lang game after CitOW is slightly worse than the previous game.>- What component would you like to see more in games?Cube tower>- What's the genre you like the most and the one you like the least?Like engine builders, always love seeing explosive turns at the end where everything comes together nicely. Dislike wargames, they tend to look ugly and play clunky.
>>96627231>Anyone else pledging to not buy any games in 2026?Why? Do you regularly buy many games? How many in 2025? I don't think I have a problem with buying. The only thing that I put a restraint on is KS games. I wanted to back Railways of Lost Atlas but I decided I just don't want to use this platform. Rather wait if it comes to retail or if a new game comes out.
>>96626788>Bonus question: What is your favorite game by Bruno Cathala?Kingdomino? I played a lot of his games and found them good, some very good for what they do, but none great. The one I really want to try is Five tribes.

Are there any game shills here? Give an update.I know there were guys shilling:>Civolution >Sol>Aegian sea>...And othersDid you opinion of these games change after initial hype died down?
>>96627894>Aegean SeaSo far so good>Hegemony Second game felt a bit unsatisfying.
>>96627894>Aegean Sea>initial hypeThe fuck are you on about, it's a game from 2 years ago, and the niche of a niche. But to answer your question, yes, it's still good, though I only play it on tts and leave my copy untouched because it's annoying to tuck cards one behind the other. Cannot immagine splaying with Innovation in real life
>Aegean Sea fans immediately crawl out of the woodwork and one is hostileHoly shit that game flopped huh>>96627998Splaying Innovation in real life is fine, you just pick the stack of cards up to re-splay them

Unless they're running a boots on the ground standard distribution campaign as well I doubt I'll see it in Australia without backing. >>96626788>favorite Bruno CathalaAt this stage it's Cyclades. Don't think I have played anything beyond cyclades and the 7wd and lotr variant though. I found 7WD quite boring without an expansion to throw a wrench in the gears and reduce how readable priority is.
>>96628036i don't think anon is being hostile, it's just a bit strange to reference initial hype on a game that wasn't critically or commercially successful. if you're referring to strictly discourse here in /bgg/ though, I get what you mean
>>96627998>The fuck are you on about, it's a game from 2 years ago, and the niche of a niche.Doesn't matter. Unless you are a literal shill, when you play a game and like it you get hyped to play it again so you might overrate a game but after subsequent plays that might die down and you have a different opinion of the game. I'm not talking about general, public hype for a game.Aegean sea was shilled her long after it came out by users that claimed they just got it and it was great.
>>96627894>and>Civolution13 games in and still going strong. GotY 2024 for me>HegemonyRarely get it to the table, so I can't really tell but as of now I think it's one of the best designs ever made. It's such a great interwoven economy, everything you do has consequences for everyone else. The best thing is how sometimes, you might even want to act against your interest to stop a cascade that'll ultimately fuck you over harder, predicting that and knowing when and how to shift the balance in your favor are so statisfying>HarmoniesKinda burnt out on it, the more interesting variant with (spirit?) animals you choose at the start is really broken. But I've never played in person so kinda worthless opinion here>Circadians chaos orderStill have to play that one soonish>SETIEh, take it or leave it. Felt too smoothed out overall, and you always do everything instead of specializing which I've come to dislike in euros.

>>96628119>HegemonyI wish I liked the game as much as others. It has everything I should like but to me it's just good. It just doesn't do it for me and I can't quite determine why that is. Wish more games did this - each player has a unique deck of cards.

>>96628238Just base. Not going deep into a game and genre that I have no idea I'll end up actually liking.I've often heard that it is a very, very good introduction to 18xx, and a big thing that kept me from dipping my toes into the genre was the unchanging map
>>96627894I'll throw in >Duel for Middle EarthI guess? I don't own it but I have played it about 12 times maybe. A year on and I still think it's very fun and holds up to repeated plays (Although once a month) quite well. Hoping my friend ends up getting the new expansion otherwise I might have to buy the game myself.>>96628119>SETIDefinitely gotta be one of the worst games of last year for me tied with White Castle. I'm really not sure what people see in the core gameplay loops of crappily racing drones to planets
>>96627894I can shill Exceed as much as you want.My opinion of it did not change after the hype because there was no hype to begin with. There is a cool fan-made online version, on top of the TTS module:https://daktagames.itch.io/exceedggAll seasons are out of print, but it's only cards so it's easy to print & play.
>>96628658how does is stack up against BattleCON if i don't care about the characters and where they're from?
>>96628150>>96628381>done the unthinkable and kikestartedI've never backed anything and thought for a moment to make an exception but decided not to. I've seen it twice on a second hand site and hoping to see it again for a decent price>just baseThe expa adds cool modules and companies, since you've already soiled your soul with the sin of backing, couldve put 20 bucks more for the expa
>>96628775Both are good, but Exceed is easier to play.People who prefer Battlecon have two arguments:1) Battlecon has no randomness. I think this only true if you consider that rock-paper-scissors in not random. On the other hand, the card-game nature of Exceed opens new possibilities : more probabilities evaluations of the opponent's hand, even of your own deck with wild swings, where you can play the first card of your deck as an attack, multi-use cards thanks to the different turn structure.2) Battlecon's character are more different and rule-bending. Very solid argument, but that also means that it's easier to grasp a new Exceed character, and ultimately to vary the games. If you (or your fellow gamers) prefer fast action and playing more by feel (it can still be thinky!), go Exceed. If you want something very thinky with 20 different combinations possible each round (+ optional modifiers) and anticipating the next 3 rounds each turn, go Battlecon.

>>96629013Everything related to wardens looks dumb for afar. From the ginormous minis (that have been dropped, but still, it will be a table hog), to the artistic direction (the new style is awful compared to Nokomento 's artwork) to the use of fucking rulers to read the distances.I am sure that it is not awful to play, but it seems to be doing everything for me to not give a damn.Spooktacular looks good but it's a light game that they decided to not localize, so I'm won't find out.
>Sakura Arms but without the tranime art
Man, what a game I had yesterday, my truck/car mainline was completely dominating until good coordination of the rest of the players put a stop to my monopoly through research and planning to make me eat dust right at the very end of the game.>>96614500I think the best way to introduce the game and teach it is going by the phases step backwards, something like this>In this game you want to sell the most cars to accumulate the most wealth>demand is represented on this grid and the axis how much of each spec they want from your cars>you place these demands every round through these >Demand also changes pricing on each segment shown in the grid>You get specs by building your factory and placing tech stations to accumulate spec points>you gain the patents to place tech stations through research (and planning), which are also tiles you place on your factory floor (in which you explain all about the placing rules)After that a simple quick summary of the actual steps, adding a little of why you'd do this or the other, and you're ready to play. Only thing people I've played with have been having trouble with for some reason is Assembly Capacity, they dont' quite get what it represents so I have to add some more examples to that. Hope it helps.
>>96627998>I only play it on tts and leave my copy untouchedSo you are not a real board gamer.
thoughts on hex grids that use circles? (not sure what this type of grid is called)
>>96629348>where is Pexil Tacticsin the "upcoming games" dropdown and pageuse the internet, dude, it's amazing what you can find online

>>96629689But it has anime art. That's the point.
>>96629693and my point is "anime art" and "tranime art" are two different things, and Sakura Arms has the good one so complaining about it having the bad one is like saying apples bad because they're too similar to oranges

speaking of Cathala, has anyone here played Mission: Red Planet? is it good?
>>96627231I will probably buy the Leder heist game if it looks good but the only stuff I'm looking to get in the next year are my root and oath Kickstarter campaigns and the new labyrinth expansion, and the new edition of Twilight Struggle I've already paid for. I don't really feel any urgency to buy anything, but I do love Kyle Ferrin's art.
>>96629849>and my point is "anime art" and "tranime art" are two different thingsLolLmao
>>96630017It's fine.
>>96629473It's called Summoner wars, and it's ten times better
>>96629849A distinction without a difference. They don't call it tranime because it has trannies but rather because trannies notoriously consume anime at exorbitant rates.
>>96630169I want to try it so bad. Yes, it looks pretty cool. Is the base game good enough?
>>96630200I'd say the master set is. The starter set only has two factions, and a paper board instead of a mounted cardboard one. But the six factions included in the master set are all great. You have a faction that has a ton of cheap expendable troops with lots of movement capabilities to help the effort of a few titans, a faction that benefits from their own units dying, a faction that can control enemy units, and more.
>>96630200Base game is great.
>>96629568>not a real boardgamer if i play on ttsOh no... i dont care>>96630017Kind of forgettable, sold it after only like 4 plays
>>96630200You can try it for free online. It is brainier than it looks, but it is great. That said, it's very different from Sakura Arms despite what >>96629689 implies.
>Argent but with the weeaboo art replaced by Japanese art
>>96629550The part where people always seem to trip up with me is how sales brochures work when multiple mainlines share a dealership. I imagine multiple dealerships touching a single mainline would also rip people up, but it's not something people tend to want to do.
>>96630169eh they're not really that same. Summoner Wars you control an army thats all face up on the battlefield, Sakura Arms you're in a tight duel full of bluffs and hidden information.
>>96629678
>>96630838>Half the game is spent moving back and forth to fulfill distance requirement on the card>the other half is moving gay little aura counters around instead of just hitting the other dude>most life damage you take won't even be from your actual opponent, but from the one hit penalty it take to reshuffle your puny card deck constantlyIt's a shit game, bro.
>>96630731Funny you mention that, as one of my dealerships was like that during the game I posted about (which had a newbie, a beginner, an initiated player, and myself). Since I was the one who did it they didn't care much about it, but the newbie was actually going to do that during a point to add sport cars to his factory, we guided him a little and found a way to place in such a way that was better, but it was altogether a good teaching moment.I think the thing that trips most people is the sales focus vs engineering focus, or at least to keep track of what patents they have access to at any time. It's clearer to explain with 4 or 5 players than with 3 since you don't get much out of it with so few players.
>>96630838Thoughts on Hanamikoji?
>>96630875If someone complained about how Summoner Wars is shit if everyone turtles, you would mock them, nad rightfully so.Well congrats, you did the equivalent with Sakura Arms.
I just found out which economic game I am getting next.
>>96630017Loved it the first game, complete 180 on the second game, ok on the third... It's a fine game, if you like this style of game it's very solid. It's also one of those where the enjoyment of the game depends on the people.
>>96630875you played it wrong, sorry lil broif you wanna get a pro to show you how it's done we could play on Tabletop Simulator but i know anons on /bgg/ dont actually play games they just talk about them without knowing shit, like you lol
So some anon said pic related is better than Twilight Struggle. Some first impressions. Despite the theme being not interesting me, the game does shine through and get you invested enough that it's not a problem. The idea of putting a WMD is London is very motivating.I would even say that the gameplay is broadly more interesting than TS given the total asymmetry between the players. However, the amount of dice rolling in the game is not my cup of tea. Pretty much all actions that change the board state and aren't written on an event card involve rolling dice. For the jihadists especially, the margin for success is much thinner and leads to cases of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory a hell of a lot of times. I get that it's thematic that terrorist operations are risky, but it feels way too luck based, where a string of just a few lucky rolls can propel a player halfway to victory. The silver lining is that I am still learning the game, and in both games (that I lost as the jihadists) there were things that I should've done differently upon reflection, so maybe getting gud will mitigate this to a degree, but I honestly doubt it will get to a place where it's at least equally as luck-based than TS, and that's a bit of a problem. Still, eager to play more, it was fun so far.
