Running a heavily tweaked Savage Tide.
They had a sit-down with a local thieves' guild leader, a kobold, and she offered to poach them from their current patron. Some of them were on board with that, and others weren't, so we had a lot of really fun roleplaying. While no combat this session, I got to maintain a heavy sense of tension since it could have broken into a fight at any time (and they were not confident in their ability to beat her in her own lair). Some skill rolls were rolled, but that was it.
I also had a new player to bring on, and as he's a rogue, I had the idea to have him be the thieves' guild leader's emissary in the party, representing her interests. Now the party is torn between loyalties and it's a really fun time for all of us.

Fair enough but I find it kind of fun to think about. Like, with a Hideaway Staff (especially with wand chambers) you've got a lot of power in what is basically a short 5-6" cylinder since the state of the weapon doesn't effect its ability to be used as a spell trigger device, you could disguise it as something innocuous like attach a hammer head or chisel etc. it looks like a regular tool, you'd never suspect it's a powerful implement.

Or even more interesting if it's a Sizing weapon turned really small. Consider a wizard who walks around fighting dragons with what looks like a toothpick, or a cigarette holder/pipe
