>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

Probably Mattel. I've grown fond of Gaslands, and the challenge of converting little cars into usable minis for other games would be fun for a few years.

It's a toss up between WGA and Northstar. Both have good ranges. WGA has a wider range, but Northstar has more complete ranges for games. Hard to choose.

Perry Miniatures or Empress Miniatures

Perry can be used for a massive range of historicals from medieval all the way up to WW2, as well as tons of fantasy conversions and proxies.
Empress covers all modern conflicts, with stuff from the black powder era all the way up to the present day, and has infinite possibilities for sciFi conversions and proxying.
On top of that, they both are some of, in my opinion, the best looking miniatures as well.

Steelfist Miniatures is my other favorite manufacturer, and has truly amazing looking models with huge fantasy potential, but their range is too small for me to consider them as my "one source"

>The endless pain of an American watching Br*ts buy mountains of classic models for shillings on the tuppence.
I have to haunt conventions and marketplace to find one boomer who doesn’t think his tacklebox of Orks are a retirement plan.

It looks like the OPR beta, which was a rushed hack job at “launch,” is coming around to be at least half-decent. Having to wade into the open sewer that is Discord to interact with the beta has been… educational. It does seem like the guys is listening, though. The main army threads I’ve been in have *generally* pulled things in a good direction. The designer has been responsive, too, which is refreshing.

Xenotactics was shilled here and upon inspection it was the closest I could find to a computer tactical game. It's a watered down, miniature agnostic Infinity. Crossfire would be the closest to reality but it's WW2. Shouldn't be hard to homebrew anyway since you're aiming for narrative.

>OPR beta
What a shit show it was. Tano seems like he's quite good at some design things and really not great at others - and he still treats the game like a small personal project rather than a company with customers and expectations, etc.
On the streams he's always using the first person "I", like "I wanted it to feel like x". The beta was clearly a result of this whim-based design ethos. Pretty frustrating. The OPR team really needs playtesters / editors or something, even if it's a small team of contracted people or volunteers or whatever.
That said, his willingness to fix things without being egotistical about it and demanding his way or the highway is pretty nice.
I will say though, this beta has really revealed how shitty, toxic, and retarded various segments of the OPR playerbase is though, kek

I'm personally just really looking forward to the new army builder studio, looks like it's gonna be super flexible.

Bolt Action is a great and fun game, if you play 2nd edition. 3rd edition was completely unnecessary but for some reason they made it anyways as a GWesque cash grab and its decidedly worse than BA 2e

To the guy who suggested xenos rampant. Thanks.
I'll admit I went for it first because it has the word "xenos" in it, which is a word used a lot in 40k lore, but it's aspect of supporting many different genres of science fiction may be why I'm feeling a liking for it.
Not that I'm throwing away grimdark future also thanks for suggesting that. I need to give that a read now.

Thanks /awg/. I'm feelin' it.
>>
>>96644291
If you don't mind explaining, what makes 3rd worse than 2nd from a gameplay perspective?
I just picked up a second edition rulebook from ebay, so I've got that nailed down, I'm just curious to know what I'm missing.

>>96644315
You're welcome anon, happy to have helped.
>>
>>96644315

OPR is in flux one now, as the 3.5 beta is ongoing. Xenos rampant was more of a one-and-done thing. There was a faq which clarified some issues and I've heard some people play it with chit activation, which sounds interesting. I've used the 12/6 attack dice split now that I've been playing with my son, but I have mixed emotions about it. On one hand it makes the game faster and deadlier, on the other it kind of flattens the difference between elite and super heavy infantry, especially if the opponent brings a lot of heavy weapon upgrades on their units.

ignore whiny tards

BA is a fun game, 3rd edition was pretty unnecessary but it's not worse than 2nd edition. The core rules are slightly slicker than 2nd edition, but the downside is they made force organisation larger so you can no longer just take like a single tank for support, for example, you have to take a tank platoon with minimum 2 vehicles. So it went from a platoon sized game to a platoon+ game.
>>
>>96644720
Ah well that does sound like a downside, I was kinda drawn towards the game specifically because it was your dudes and maybe a tank when it comes to the scale of things. That's unfortunate.

Painted a historical Claymore Castings man-at-arms for ASOIAF. Originally started painting on this when House of the Dragon had the Rook's Nest battle but then I lost interest and put it in a box, finally went back and finished it. Originally planned Hightower or Greens but couldn't be assed once I saw how the show diverged from the source material for the worse so I painted the livery of Stokeworth.

>BA is a fun game, 3rd edition was pretty unnecessary but it's not worse than 2nd edition

This sums it up nicely. The game did not need new rules, but selling books is their business, so i get why they did it.
This retarded mindset "they are doing GW-thing" whenever a company is trying to sell something really needs to stop.

The 3rd edition in itself is not bad, and all the crying babies should be ignored. As if any BA player really needed to buy new units. Oh, you need 3 more officers? Guess the majority of players would not have 20 spare sprues and 20 different tanks at home anyway?

If you really do not want to bring an additional tank, you could bring a recon vehicle as small as a motorcycle instead.

GW's current charging $52 for 10 guard so no, $44 for 24 is not really even in the same ballpark
