I like modeling them after ancient warriors and soldiers. Fits better IMO then a generic medieval fantasy guy.

Helmeted or otherwise faceless. It always works, and it isn't insanely cringe like 99% of fighter snowflakes who insist on their ugly retard characters' faces being shown at all times. Even if your character sucks he'll be more iconic and less embarrassing.
