Now that the dust has settled, did Horus Heresy ruin 40k?
The emperor's fall and the battle of terra were mysterious and ominous before but horus turned it into soap opera bullshit
>>
>>96656667
yes it did. 40k used to be a mysterious gothic horror setting that was perfectly encapsulated by dark ambient and dungeon synth music, now it's retarded soap opera shit.
>>
What the fuck is the appeal of reading this drivel? Do you have to be brain damaged to be a 40kid or a genre fiction babby in general?
The Horus Heresy series has 25,000 pages. For all the time you spend reading 25,000 pages you could read all the great works of the western canon and more.
>b-but the classics aren't exciting
They are. Ivanhoe, the Three Musketeers, Treasure Island, Orlando Furioso, the Faerie Queene, Robinson Crusoe, etc are all exciting, action packed works of literature that will stimulate you intellectually in a way no warhammer novel ever can.
>but i like reading fantasy/sci fi
Why not read the best of the genre instead of slop? Why not read all the shit warhammer ripped off (Lovecraft, Conan, Starship Troopers, Elric, etc) than reading manchild baby shit?
>>
>>96656705
idk anon in my experience Peter Fehervari is a pretty good 40k author, but he also doesn't write HH drivel. i'm sure the classics would be better tho
>>
>>96656667
No. Games Worshop ruined 40k. Horus Heresy was just one of the many, many, many wrecking balls they used to do it.
>>
>>96656705
>Do you have to be brain damaged to be a 40kid or a genre fiction babby in general?
Yes and yes.
>>
>>96656667
It's a game with little plastic army men.

Who fucking cares. No: nothing has "ruined" it. Buy some little plastic army men, build and paint them, and roll some dice about it with your friends. It's the same fucking thing it's always been, except that paints, models and technique have gotten way-the-fuck better since the 90s when we though basing meant "lol paint the base neon green so that it looks like grass."
>>
>>96656820
This. 40k was ruined when it started being more about "the story" than the setting. The only story that matters is the one you make with yourdudes. All this gay primarch soap opera drama only appeals to secondaries and cancerous normies, the things that kill a hobby.

I think it's time to admit that the only thing that will heal 40k is mass killings of tournament players, nu40k fans and people who fawn over primarchs.
>>
>>96656850
Nice damage controll community manager.
>>
>>96656667
It reduced 40k froma setting to a soap opera about Primarchs. Now the only thing people want is more Primarchs.
>>
>>96657039
Why not kill them?
>>
>>96656850
>STOP CARING ABOUT THINGS
This is what has ruined everything.
>>
>>96657304
Your putting a game of plastic army men and heavy metal onto a pedastal that needs to be taken seriously, rather than having countless trashy novels written, is what ruins it.
>>
>>96657349
kill all hh fans
>>
Just read all the white scar books

thank me latter

You aren't ready to hear this, but picrel is what killed 40k.

>caring about things means you think they are SUPER SERIOUS
>>
HH is just a symptom. The thing killing 40k and every other IP being owned by publicly traded companies.
>>

>What the fuck is the appeal of reading this drivel? Do you have to be brain damaged to be a 40kid or a genre fiction babby in general?
yes and yes. please note most of these people dont read. They’ll call it reading but its actually just listening to the audiobooks. which, by the way, if anyone here feels insecure about their shitty reading ability like I did, just note that most normalfags do this. I read like shit but it makes me feel a lot better knowing most of the posers aren’t even trying.
>>
>>96656705
It’s easily digestible pulp fiction. You dont have to navigate prose, big words, or themes like with normal literature its just a comic book made into novel form. They are very easy to read and the average 40k tard can wrangle a page in under a minute with no necessity of re-reading. “A giant slopsplosion pulped the fangorius monster into bloody chunks.” something of that nature. Its fun to read in a dumb way, and I read a couple before setting them aside because ultimately I can’t learn anything useful from books like that.
>>
>>96658100
I can understand reading a few books every now and then but reading 26,000 pages of warhammer slop is beyond me
>>
>>96658118
I imagine people just read the books with theirdudes and then read the wiki for a synopsis on the rest. I dont think most if not all of the readers actually read the entire heresy. I don’t even think it was meant to be read in its entirety.
>>
>>96656680
You are an idiot, repeating some buzzwords you have read here.
>>
>>96657039
They wanted primarchs all the time. The demand for them made GW release Horus Heresy stuff in the first place.
>>
>>96658560
Be that as it may, he's still not wrong.
>>
>>96658576
horus heresy was designed to draw in people discontent with new rules moreso
>>
>>96658118
You do not have to read it at once Anon. Do you realize that the first books came out 20 years ago? You can easily manage to read 100 pages per month, right?
>>
>>96658582
>>96658591
It's a chicken or egg question tho. Both is true, but if people had never asked for primarchs, GW would never have released any books for 30k. But once they did, it spiralled.
>>
>>96656850
I would like to, but GW and Primarch humpers have destroyed all ability to make custom models and play fun scenarios without ostracising myself from the community in this community centric hobby.
>>
>>96658601
>Making your hobby enjoyment depending on other people

Totally a /you/ issue
>>
>>96656667
You've never read any of the old fluff. There was never any mystery or mystic to it. It was always Paradise Lost with angry space dads. It still is, just with a longer word count.
>>
>>96658634
You'll be strung up alongside the writers when the day of Reclamation comes.
>>
>>96658612
Why yes, I enjoy meeting people over a mutual hobby, playing games with them, and discussing elements of this shared interest.

When the game pivots from being a modeling and community endeavor into a greytide tournament that gives zero room for creativity or entertainment, it strips the social aspect out of it, leaving only painting and modeling, which I can do with anything else.
>>
>>96658601
>>96658710
Truth. The primarch worshippers have sucked all flavor out of this hobby, turning it into a tournament centered clusterfuck where people sperg out about their primarch centerpiece models and only focus on them narratively. They only focus on stories that have already been told, rather than creating stories themselves.

When you point this out, they will retaliate with "oh, but you can still create the fun narratives and custom scenarios and custom models if you want!" But the truth is, if you do this, you will be excluded from the community for it. You will be ostracized. You will be expected to "get with the program." Or you will be left behind. It's no longer about Your Dudes, it's about GW's Dudes, and the community has voiced that if you do not play with GW's Dudes, you have no place in it.
>>
Growing up i realized i love holy space-knights in heavy power-armor stomping on demon heads, not wh40k. Couldn't care less about 40k lore or it's setting
>>
>>96658788
I get not being into the gay ass expanded fluff, but you sound lame as shit if you weren't into the dark elements
>>
>>96656705
>Ivanhoe, the Three Musketeers, Treasure Island, Orlando Furioso, the Faerie Queene, Robinson Crusoe, etc are all exciting, action packed works of literature that will stimulate you intellectually in a way no warhammer novel ever can.
fedora sighted. weapons free.
>>
>>96658752
not to mention the rules are tailored against custom scenarios. you no longer know what the shooting skill or weapon skill of a unit is anymore. legends rules are barebones afterthoughts which are either overtuned to hell or so useless you wouldnt ever run it, and the rules are so lackluster you wouldnt run them for fluff anyway. rules are only balanced for 1v1 2k points, because thats how tourneys are run. wanna run more or less points? fuck you, same unit caps, same command point rules, same fate dice rules etc. Wanna run older fluff units? fuck you half are legends the other half are straight up removed. wanna run a crusade? here’s the most barebones system 40k has ever had, made in a lunch break. oh the rules dont work anymore because of a balancing change made a month after release? Well fuck you fix it yourself cause we’re not updating it.

its very clear we’re not supposed to have narrative games in this edition
>>
>>96656667
"NOOOO STOP LAYING LORE DOWN NOOOO" fags deserve suffering
>>
>>96656667
All the worst parts of the HH novels, the things people complain about, were already written down in Index Astartes and codexes beforehand. The novels just spread awareness of them. Things like the Primarchs being whiny bitch babies and the Emperor being an idiot were already true. People just don't want to admit the franchise has always been stupid and grimderp, even though the entire point of it was to be stupid and grimderp.
>>
>>96658854
Manchild detected

>>96658825
>but you sound lame as shit if you weren't into the dark elements
>You have to care about the deep lore of your average citizen-slave being cramped in tight spaces and smog filled factories all day
I like the dark aesthetics of the Imperium but that's what the entire setting is, industrial gothic(which is cool). What is there to enjoy besides that? Not even derelict ships in 40k are interesting or mysterious in the setting because you already know what you're getting lol
>>
>>96658876
>its very clear we’re not supposed to have narrative games in this edition

Okay, let me lay this down for you. Either get into comp play and learn to love primarchs, or leave the fucking hobby, faggot. We'll force you out. We're going to KILL narrative players in 11th. HAIL COMPETITIVE PLAY!!!
>>
>>96659573
hell yes, brother! own that narrative fag! 40k is a T-SPORT now!!! the primarchs and their GW-approved black library novel stories are all the narrative you need!

Increasingly convinced a lot of people aren't fans of 40k but a fake version of it they got from memes and Dawn of War.

I'm a fan of Peter Fehervari novels, Imperial Armour and codex fluff. I'm not a fan of Horus Heresy slop.
