I know that campaign-driven skirmish games are more of the alternative wargaming territory but are there any historical wargames that managed to do the "band of your dudes adventuring and progressing in a historical setting" well? Almost every period of the premodern history feels like a great setting for such a system. I'm looking mostly for ancient wargames but I wonder if any historical wargame shines in narrative gameplay.
>>
>>96674069
Give me some examples of games you are looking for similar of
>>
>>96674105
Mordheim or Xgrave are definitely too complex in their narrative aspect to be copied by a historical system without hurting the historical aspect of the game but I would prefer something more detailed and granular than SAGA or SPQR progression systems. Surprisingly, SPQR Revised narrative bits are quite well developed but missing the punch.

I wish I could print 28mm but the sad reality is that printing 28mm on a mars 4 ultra fucking sucks
With 18mm I can print about 36-48 figures per plate in 2 hours whereas with 28mm I can only print max 18 per plate and it takes 3.5 hours
3d printing is terrible and so I'd rather bang out a whole collection within 2 weeks than spend months printing a 28mm collection
>>
>>96676497
I love your work Turk-kun but SPQR system is already much more complex than yours and I'm looking for something with even more meat than SPQR. You get extra points for every warrior receiving experience points and progressing though.
>>96676853
WGA Irish are decent and you get 10 dogs in a single box which is more than you will ever need. If you want to work on something right now, go for it - there is nothing wrong about that kit.
>>
>>96676965
Yeah I think their DA Irish are pretty decent.
>>
>>96676965
How about this, then; since you're interested in skirmishes, you can use old school D&D combat rules (moldvay basic D&D if you want a decent one, AD&D 1e if you want all the crunch) coupled with a historical setting from AD&D Historical Sourcebook line?
That'd give you a decent combat ruleset, and a well-developed campaign and progress chance.

Mind you, then, this would work only the old-school D&Ds, since they're basically wargames with campaign rules.

>>96676960

As much as I would love to try it, there is no way in the world I will talk my wargaming group into something this convoluted. It took me ages to convince local players to try something different than GW slop and slightly less time to talk them into giving historicals a chance. I'm quite proud of assembling a steady Saga group in my area but I know better than trying to discuss and question some of their mental blocks. Basically, if something is not contained within 1-2 books and served in a shiny branded box, their Warhammer-damaged brains won't take it without a fight and I learnt to pick my battles wisely.
>>
>>96677401
That's a tough battle and I understand. I've got a warhammer group online, and people are not interested anything beyond GW-products (and only the latest edition). So I feel you...
Good luck, anon!
>>
>>96677401
This attempt to meme old dnd as a viable set of wargaming rules continues to be retarded.
>>
>>96677491
>and only the latest edition
Grim.
Warhammer was always bloated and poorly designed, even the so-called best editions like 4E suck compared with non-GW games. GW had some bangers like Shadow War Armageddon but they often died because of no proper support and GW hardly teaches their players to put any effort into their hobby. Some of the aspects of specific editions are nicely executed like Crusade rules in the 9th edition but that's enough to make the game a pleasant experience.

We're planning something, although more for cold war...

Idea is to be somewhere between the Missile Threat mercenary air campaign and Rangers of Shadow Deep - 1-4 players as special forces or insurgents, co-op against flowchart AI, selecting low, medium or high risk missions and trying to survive as long as possible with resupply or extraction uncertain.
Aiming for realistic weapon rosters, magazine sizes and weights, some light inventory management, and actual gameplay relatively lightweight but realistic and lethal firearms. Stealth will be key, but sometimes you'll have no choice depending on the missions.

Planning to cover the following to start with, will see how we go. Both sides will be playable for each conflict:
Vietnam
Burma
LRDG
Rhodesia
Soviet-Afghan War
Stay Behind in East Germany (cold war gone hot - maybe taking a bit more from Metal Gear Solid with regards the enemies having tanks and helicopters galore)

Will start working on this once Ostfront 2nd ed. is finished, which is currently at 89% of army lists complete (covering all of WW2), and playtests are currently going very well.

Redpill me on Hail Caesar or recommend me a better alternative, please.
Warlord's historical rulesets are very hit-or-miss. Bolt Action is mediocre, Black Powder is the worst game I ever played. I didn't even bothered with Pike & Shotte but SPQR revised edition surprised me pleasantly. Is it even worth to give HC a try or are there any obviously superior alternatives?

Well if you're a zoomer and think "chat" is a hivemind you have to conform too, yes. Different people, different tastes.

>>96683027
First, note that the other anon is right: Hail Caesar share the same base structure as Pike & Shot and Black Powder. But in opposition to these two, and especially Black Powder, it captures the flavor of the era and is fun to play.
HC is a good mix of crunch, with details such as opening or closing ranks, and fluff, with a referee imagining the worst misheard order for a blunder roll.

If you think wargaming is akin to chess you might hate it still. If not, HC offers decent historical battle results while using historical tactics. It comes in a lenghty rulebook but is very clearly summarized in easy to read quick reference sheets so thank God for that.

I'll elaborate. If you like the periods represented in the starters and their minis they are good value and just treat the rules as something to try.

Like any basic rules set they can take some hous ruling without breaking.

>we used a 60mm frontage
>each turn STARTED with the artillery phase

That was about that

I got myself 2 sprues of Winter Fallschirmjager and 2 sprues of Winter Infantry, and a sprue of Africa Corps for variety.

It gives me 24 bodies with winter gear (not using the AC bodies):

>2 Squads of 8 Infantry
>Officer with 2 Aides
>Scout Squad with 4 men
>1 Medic

I dont want to buy a full box of either, so i have to wait for some individual sprues to show up on ebay, but i will add one of each winter sprue as well as one sprue of the veteran infantry for more weapon/pose variety, and also the option for flamethrower and MMG teams.

Future purchase plans:
Warlord Marder 3 (I decided to the the Marder over the Stug, because its open topped, and i like to see the crew)
2x Opel Maultier
Either Warlord or Rubicon Early Panzer 4

Yeah, that may be the case. I like my rules tight and on point rather than pointless bloat and mumbling Priestley shoves into his rules. He is decent rules writer but a terrible rulebooks writer.
Is HC scaling down decently or is it one of those games that folds and breaks whenever you try to use armies smaller than recommended?
>>96683149
>If you like the periods represented in the starters and their minis they are good value and just treat the rules as something to try
I am this guy >>96672084. I bought a box of Warlord's phalangites mostly for Saga but I actually love their poses and how easy to assemble they turned out to be quite time-consuming still. I just found out LGS has an army box on discount for 80€ so I want to pull the trigger.
I hate to buy minis with no specific game in mind so I'm desperately looking for a game that will let me field up to a taxis of Foot Companions, handful of Cavalry Companions and an elephant.
I used to play Mortal Gods with my gf quite a lot so I have various Greek minis as well - 12 archers, about 20 slingers, a mix of 60 hoplites (armoured and unarmoured) and handful of peltasts. This should be enough to build two armies in some decent system, right?
I'm taking into consideration HC, Basic Impetus and Swordpoint but I have yet to find all the PDFs for it. Has Osprey released any good ancient ruleset that is not a skirmish game perhaps?

On the Victrix site I see the figures holding flags or banners like on the Islamic foot and cav figures or the Saxons. But I don't see the flags on the sprue.

Am I supposed to just print my own flags on thick paper and glue it to the spears or what? Some of the smaller banners like on the Late Romans have the plastic for it and I can buy LBM decals, but what about the others?

>Am I supposed to just print my own flags on thick paper and glue it to the spears or what?
Yup. Perry usually puts a leaflet in their boxes with a short infodump on the minis inside and flags/banners printed on the other side. I'm not sure if Victrix does the same since they are not using cardboard boxes but those banners are definitely printed on paper. Personally, I hate this and I find it extremely cheap and bad looking in person, not to mention how easy they are to be damaged. Whenever possible, I prefer to kitbash and model a proper plastic banner by using non-historical bits but I'm lucky enough to focus on periods and armies where complex and detailed flags were not used in the first place.
Watch /hwg/ building a stake for me now.

Lost Battles by Philip Sabin.
>>
Been making force lists for the 1941 Eastern Front in Chain of Command v2. Struggling on what to do with Soviet Tank Desant.

It became official doctrine in 1942 to use SMG sections in tank desants, but those came from ad-hoc instances of it happening in 1941. Should I just retain the rule, or adjust it?

My idea for adjustments are
>Make it cost more chain of command points but let it apply to any section since formal tank riders dont exist yet
>Delete it outright
>Only allow SMG sections do it, since full platoons didnt exist yet but sections did

Any thoughts?

Has anyone tried "Heiho" by Helion press? Wargames Atlantic are bundling it with a bunch of 10mm figs, and it's kinda tempting me to try Sengoku-period gaming. (Yeah, 'cause I really needed a new era, system, and scale. Well, tough. I make bad choices.)

I have it . My buddies refuse to play with unpainted minis or terrain though so we all have a big collection to paint through before trying it. I will say this, having watched the writer speak about his goals and vision for the game, it's clear he's someone whose down the research and wants to make a game that, while not a perfect simulation, at least tries to model sengoku era warfare. My issue with most samurai wargames is they'll take medieval warfare and slap a coat of samurai paint on it and call it a day. heihos writer indicates hes of the same opinion and that gives me high hopes for the quality of research in the game

It's associated with WGA and therefore I will not be supporting it
>>
>>96701603
I'm open to suggestions - what's a better way to approach the period? Also, what have WGA done to earn this blacklisting? I'm apparently out of the loop.

What is your opiniom on Fake/Custom nations?
>>
>>96701372
Never tried but I know they did their homework for sure. Ever it's based on the conclusion of one of the most learned sengoku jidai wargamer there is, either he's the author himself.

WGA insulted President Trump and the tariffs. Fuck them

I've got 15 more plates to print before stage 1 of my Austrian project is done
I still don't know how to paint these guys
I started painting them with just a basic basecoat but stopped because my vallejo black is broken and become glossy
It seems that using a single colour wash, like black, seems to be pretty common to make the details stand out

>played a game of chain of command
>soviet player places a section in a wooden church with a senior leader
>I deploy an Ig18 infantry gun to root them out
>In its second volley I get 3 6's and destabilize the church
>the section quickly moves to leave before the turn ends
>my light mortar shoots it
>kills only his senior leader
>he deploy his inferior senior leader to help wrangle the section out of there
>my nearby infantry section immediately kills him too
>another one of his sections breaks after their junior leader gets stunned
>get goes from 9 morale to 2 in like 3 rounds
On one hand I'm proud of myself for successfully taking down an entrenched position like that, but damn were the dice on my side. His T60 kept bombarding a section of mine in a house and never rolled more than 1 6.

It was a good game back through, he usually wins so my personal morale is high. Gonna start our battle of Tula campaign soon

I'm doing 18mm so I think the painting process is likely different
I have thought about using contrast paints though

I came here for the same reason, so I'm glad I didn't have to open the discussion. I have a bunch of 28mm scale Samurai minis and a couple of rulesets for them, and the idea of organizing grand(er) scale samurai battles is tempting. Would really like to recreate the Battles of Kawanakajima.

The greatest American outsider artist who ever lived, Henry Darger. A reclusive and deeply religious catholic janitor who was obsessed with little trans girls. He produced a prolific volume of literature about the Vivian Girls and their battles with confederate intelligencia and giant monsters. Painstakingly traced and transfered images from newspapers and magazines in the early 20th century to create his images. His art and writing was only discovered after his death.
>>
>>96707461
No one really knows why the Vivian girls have penises. The concept of transexuality didn't exist back then. He might have been gay, but his sexual interests were never mentioned in his extensive autobiographical writings. He certainly was weird.

>The concept of transexuality didn't exist back then.
The term was coined in the early 20th century and as a concept had existed for much longer. The idea of someone changing their sex or at least appearing as the other sex is ancient.

OK, but is Heiho a good rule?

Base colours are done. I didn't expect to enjoy those minis at all, but now that the fieldgrey and white is blocked in, i really like them

Probably too early to tell for sure, unless you just try it yourself. Speaking of, are there any other (good and available) samurai warfare rules to choose from?

Loki's trickery knew no bounds.

It is speculated he drew their anatomy this way because he had never seen a woman naked. The usual trans self insert is not required.

It's also bizarre to call him the best outsider artist.

Christian propaganda
The real pagan loki didn't transform himself into a female horse and then get impregnated by a male horse
Nor did the real pagans preserve horse cocks and then worship them as a god

Uhhh... Nigga .. in the Thrymskviða when Thors hammer is stolen he dresses up as a bride and gets butt fucked by the jötunn Thrym, and this is celebrated in the Poetic Edda as an incredible act of cunning and trickery

You can't trust literary sources. Writing is all part of the sorcerous Christian gay agenda to sap and impurify all of our precious viking sagas.

Okay, assuming at least one of you is a real Scandinavian. Can you explain to me how magic was supposed to work in the Viking age? I remember reading about curses on manhood that required putting a dead horse on a stick or writing the hex on a dressed stone. Is that all there is to it?

Unit names are changed to be more universal, so a Yeoman is now Heavy Infantry or something. Second edition is also packed with extra optionnal rules and scenarios.
