I used to have a pretty extensive collection of Tolkien artwork that I'd dump here but I've lost the external hard drive and the mediafire folder I kept it in, and I haven't been able to recover much from the archive. Can you help me rebuild it /tg/?

The best pieces tend to be from the Tolkien calendars, not a lot of which has been scanned in decent quality. Here's some artwork from the Danbury Mint mugs collection.

I particularly like Roger Garland's pieces.
Tolkien reads The ride of the Rohirrimhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6jhKEqtLxM
It's especially hard to find decent scans of the Hildebrandt brothers' paintings.
I would pay money to have this in a better resolution.
Michael Kaluta is another one of my favorite artists.
John Howe and Alan Lee were the lead artists for Jackson's movies so their work is pretty recognizable.
Another excellent piece by the Hildebrandts you really need to squint at to make out in any detail.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLwzm5lvDHIThe Witch King's Skeletor voice aside I think Rankin and Bass adapted this sequence pretty well. Although I do question why he's riding a winged horse when he's on a pterodactyl like he's supposed to be in his showdown with Eowyn.
>>96667287>Although I do question why he's riding a winged horse when he's on a pterodactyl like he's supposed to be in his showdown with Eowyn.I'm not sure why he put wings on the horse besides to show that it is evil/corrupted, but the Witch King on a horse in this scene is book accurate:Grond crawled on. The drums rolled wildly. Over the hills of slain a hideous shape appeared: a horseman, tall, hooded, cloaked in black. Slowly, trampling the fallen, he rode forth, heeding no longer any dart. He halted and held up a long pale sword. And as he did so a great fear fell on all, defender and foe alike; and the hands of men drooped to their sides, and no bow sang. For a moment all was still. The drums rolled and rattled. With a vast rush Grond was hurled forward by huge hands. It reached the Gate. It swung. A deep boom rumbled through the City like thunder running in the clouds. But the doors of iron and posts of steel withstood the stroke. Then the Black Captain rose in his stirrups and cried aloud in a dreadful voice, speaking in some forgotten tongue words of power and terror to rend both heart and stone. Thrice he cried. Thrice the great ram boomed. And suddenly upon the last stroke the Gate of Gondor broke. As if stricken by some blasting spell it burst asunder: there was a flash of searing lightning, and the doors tumbled in riven fragments to the ground. In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl. A great black shape against the fires beyond he loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face. All save one. There waiting, silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax: Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dínen.
>>96667485Oh right he switched from a horse to a pterodactyl.
I've got four or five pictures of Glaurung the Golden and he's the right color in only one of them.

>>96666788Yet neither by wolf, nor by Balrog, nor by Dragon, would Morgoth have achieved his end, but for the treachery of Men. In this hour the plots of Ulfang were revealed. Many of the Easterlings turned and fled, their hearts being filled with lies and fear; but the sons of Ulfang went over suddenly to Morgoth and drove in upon the rear of the sons of Feanor, and in the confusion that they wrought they came near to the standard of Maedhros. They reaped not the reward that Morgoth promised them, for Maglor slew Uldor the accursed, the leader in treason, and the sons of Bor slew Ulfast and Ulwarth ere they themselves were slain. But new strength of evil Men came up that Uldor had summoned and kept hidden in the eastern hills, and the host of Maedhros was assailed now on three sides, and it broke, and was scattered, and fled this way and that. Yet fate saved the sons of Feanor, and though all were wounded none were slain, for they drew together, and gathering a remnant of the Noldor and the Naugrim about them they hewed a way out of the battle and escaped far away towards Mount Dolmed in the east.Last of all the eastern force to stand firm were the Dwarves of Belegost, and thus they won renown. For the Naugrim withstood fire more hardily than either Elves or Men, and it was their custom moreover to wear great masks in battle hideous to look upon; and those stood them in good stead against the dragons. And but for them Glaurung and his brood would have withered all that was left of the Noldor. But the Naugrim made a circle about him when he assailed them, and even his mighty armour was not full proof against the blows of their great axes; and when in his rage Glaurung turned and struck down Azaghal, Lord of Belegost, and crawled over him, with his last stroke Azaghal drove a knife into his belly, and so wounded him that he fled the field, and the beasts of Angband in dismay followed after him.
Hey OP, just wanted to thanks for all the good art. One of the few good threads in /tg/
>>96668469You're welcome. I'll dump more later.
being young enough to see the movies before being able to read the books, in hindsight, is really frustrating

I found another one of my favorites.
The Russian illustrator Denis Gordeev has a ton of great artwork but I'm having an awful time finding it.

For the main wall of the City was of great height and marvellous thickness, built ere the power and craft of Númenor waned in exile; and its outward face was like to the Tower of Orthanc, hard and dark and smooth, unconquerable by steel or fire, unbreakable except by some convulsion that would rend the very earth on which it stood. J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King, "The Siege of Gondor", p. 822
Another favorite of mine.https://www.muddycolors.com/2021/10/middle-earth-eowyn-and-the-lord-of-the-nazgul/
Over the land there lies a long shadow, westward reaching wings of darkness. The Tower trembles; to the tombs of kingsdoom approaches. The Dead awaken;for the hour is come for the oathbreakers:at the Stone of Erech they shall stand againand hear there a horn in the hills ringing.Whose shall the horn be? Who shall call themfrom the grey twilight, the forgotten people? The heir of him to whom the oath they swore. From the North shall he come, need shall drive him:he shall pass the Door to the Paths of the Dead.
>>96669690The completed painting.
But at last the King grew weary, and Morgoth bore down his shield upon him. Thrice he was crushed to his knees, and thrice arose again and bore up his broken shield and stricken helm. But the earth was all pitted about him, and he stumbled and fell backward before the feet of Morgoth; and Morgoth set his left foot upon his neck, and the weight of it was like a fallen hill.... Yet with his last and desperate stroke Fingolfin hewed the foot with Ringil, and the blood gushed forth black and smoking and filled the pits of Grond. Thus died Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor, most proud and valiant of the Elven-kings of old. The Orcs made no boast of that duel at the gate; neither do the Elves sing of it, for their sorrow is too deep.
>>96669695nice
>>96669693Gorgeous. Nasmith's work is also hard to find decent scans of, often the resolution is poor or there are watermarks.
Tolkien liked the art of this Dutch illustrator and even bought one of his paintings.
‘Stand, Men of the West! Stand and wait! This is the hour of doom.’And even as he spoke the earth rocked beneath their feet. Thenrising swiftly up, far above the Towers of the Black Gate, high abovethe mountains, a vast soaring darkness sprang into the sky, flickeringwith fire. The earth groaned and quaked. The Towers of theTeeth swayed, tottered, and fell down; the mighty rampart crumbled;the Black Gate was hurled in ruin; and from far away, now dim,now growing, now mounting to the clouds, there came a drummingrumble, a roar, a long echoing roll of ruinous noise.‘The realm of Sauron is ended!’ said Gandalf. ‘The Ring-bearerhas fulfilled his Quest.’ And as the Captains gazed south to the Landof Mordor, it seemed to them that, black against the pall of cloud, there rose a huge shape of shadow, impenetrable, lightning-crowned,filling all the sky. Enormous it reared above the world, and stretchedout towards them a vast threatening hand, terrible but impotent: foreven as it leaned over them, a great wind took it, and it was all blownaway, and passed; and then a hush fell.

He was sitting with his back to a great tree, as if he was resting. But Aragorn saw that he was pierced with many black feathered arrows; his sword was still in his hand, but it was broken near the hilt; his horn cloven in two was at his side. Many Orcs lay slain, piled all about him and at his feet.Aragorn knelt beside him,. Boromir open his eyes and strove to speak. At last slow words came. “I tried to take the Ring from Frodo,”he said. “I am sorry. I have paid.” His glance strayed to his fallen enemies, twenty at least lay there.. “They have gone: the Halflings: the Orcs have taken them. I think they are not dead. Orcs bound them.” He paused and his eyes closed wearily. After a moment he spoke again.“Farewell, Aragorn! Go to Minas Tirith and save my people! I have failed.”“No!” said Aragorn, taking his hand and kissing his brow. “you have conquered. Few have gained such a victory. Be at peace! Minas Tirith shall not fall!”Boromir smiled.“Which way did they go? Was Frodo there?” said AragornBut Boromir did not speak again.

So much of this art is badass. Unfortunately, I had watched the movies many times before I read the books, and thus the aesthetic of the movies is foremost in my brain when I think of The Lord of the Rings. I hope to engage with the LOTR rpg in the coming weeks and months, as well as re-reading the books, so hopefuly with the art from this thread I'll be able to reform my vision of middle earth.

>>96674920How's a godzilla-sized monster like that supposed to be wounded by a dagger and killed by a sword?

>>96669695Yeah, thanks for reminding me I was going to make a thread on this.See, Eowyn killed a Nazgul, right? Well I haven't read the books or anything but Aragorn? I call him king pussy, actually (not pussy king, that's me). He didn't do ANYTHING in the story, not a thing. He didn't kill no damn nazgul, that's for sure. Pussy,
>>96674709Liking this Bombadil. He seems... so normal, and the willow so big.BTW did anyone ever draw the orcs as they wee described originally? Like mongols? Not trying to troll, just curious.

>>96667158People tend to forget this when talking about the movie 'style', Jackson moved heaven and earth to get Howe and Lee on the movies because they were the two most prominent Tolkien artists (besides Nasmith) and it's THEIR styles that make up the trilogy aesthetic
Bump
>>96686259This ain't Tolkien.
>>96693486Huh, it would seem so. It was posted as a Balrog in a previous Tolkien thread, I never checked the source.
