>Playing a game since session 1>New player joins some time later>Turns out he makes the same character build as me>Even a similar story>"Sorry GM, I want to change my character.">GMangryface.jpgI'm not going to force the new guy to make something else but I just don't like playing the same stuff as someone else, am I in the wrong here?
>having buildshave you tried not playing dung&dirt?
>>96671425It wasn't d&d, but thanks for trying.
>>96671429>replying to this boards most dedicated and retarded troll
>>96671412How similar was it? You can use the same premise but take it to different directions. The exact same build is an issue on the player. I assumed D&D, but I'm sure your system has ways for characters of the same type to still be unique.
>>96671412>a kindred spirit joins your party>instead of broing out, get jealous and leavewoman moment
>>96671445Almost identical, male noble human fighter with focus on charisma for intimidation and boosting.Yes and no, if I can set it up from the start it's workable but this late into the game I was not in the mood, I just don't enjoy playing the same thing as another player.
>>96671412>Turns out he makes the same character build as meHave you tried not having a shitty MMO mindset?>>96671451Also this.
>>96671458>male noble human fighter>not d&dDoes. Not. Compute.
>>96671458Unless he starts complaining about you "taking the spotlight away from him", just keep doing your own thing. At worst he'll just suck at trying to be effective, more likely you at least have someone who doesn't fall over to a stiff breeze in combat fighting by your side.
>>96671465Protip, d&d doesn't have combat intimidation builds.
>>96671474Again, I'm fine with the guy keeping this character, I just don't like playing the same thing. I was surprised by my GM being bothered when I ask him to make a new different character and play another thing, just because he's fine with having two of the same at the table doesn't mean I'm enjoying it.
Imagine how sad it is, that you need to play something different or your ego is bruisedThat was the perfect queue to make brothers, and help the new player, and the difference being your personalities. But nooo "I must be the only X with a Y backstory!"Sad
>>96671412>am I in the wrong here?Yes.
>>96671458Thats too vague to accuse him of having the same build and story.
>>96671412No one is in the wrong.I let players swap when they want to. Most campaigns usually get a swap or two. My last one went from a half-orc priest into an elven fighter. I liked the character change and it produced a new dynamic and chance to introduce some story elements. It's fun.But there's no right or wrong in these. A table plays together. I guess the only "wrong" is creating conflict. But it's not one or the other of you--it's both. You want something. Your GM wants something. You've gotta work together to accomplish it and, if you fail to, then you're both responsible for that.
>>96671503Then yeah, I’m not seeing the issue beyond hating someone “copying” you. Unless they echo everything you say too, the differences will show themselves very soon.
>>96671429Yes it was.
>>96671412If you were there first then why tf would you change or care
>>96673194Mostly because is something only I care about so it seems normal I should change the character I'm playing, but I'm shocked my GM got upset because of that.
>>96671458>makes the most generic character of all timelel
>>96673253I still dont follow. Simply be cooler than him at every turn. Cuck move to change for him.
>>96671412Your GM should have said something to the other player to begin with. Yes, it's ridiculous that he gets mad you want to change your character, unless he really was planning for half the campaign to hinge on your dude. But yeah no nobody should feel like their build or character is being made redundant and normally it's the GM's job to make sure either that everyone plays their own niche in the party or, failing that, to structure the narrative and encounters to support having two Elf Clerics that both come from broken homes and both worship Pelor.
>>96671458>not becoming buddy rivals, boasting to each otherGay
>>96673291/tg/ approved
>>96673291>male noble human fighter with charisma
>>96671412Oh, look, just another no-gamed mod thread.
>>96671458Either this >>96673531 or have him be a rival noblemen. work this as an angle
>>96671451/thread
>>96671425Name one game where you don't. To be clear, a "build" means your character has capabilities that they gained access to because they chose other capabilities previously, and they had options to choose different capabilities, but decided to not take those for the sake of synergy and/or meeting the requirements of other capabilities they wanted more.
>>96671475>laughs in Zhentarim Fighter with Imperious CommandDon't lump good edition in with 5e, please.
>>96671458>>96671429So that was a lie>inb4 duhhh paffinder aint deendee!!!lmao
>>96671412What happen with just asking "what do you guys need in your group?" before joining a game?
>>96671475>he doesn't know about 4e flensing weapon yakuza
>>96675373Yeah this, bizarre. Even when I'm in a game from the start you work out what classes everyone is playing. Assuming it's a fantasy game like D&D you have roles.Maybe it's one of those OSR games like Castles and Crusades where basically every fighter has the exact same abilities.
>>96671458>I just don't enjoy playing the same thing as another player. You are literally playing one of the most common fighter archetype of all time, idiot.
>>96671412Hey, OP, the truest and best answer you're going to get is right here >>96671654Personally, I tend to run long campaigns with a heavy focus on the PCs' interactions and history together. For that reason, I'd encourage a player to alter their character mechanics before they ditch the character as a whole. A respec, rather than a retirement. Maybe your character decides to change up their style or their focus in response to in-game events, so they play differently but get to keep their prominence in the story.
>>96671412>I wanted to play a male human fighter>BUT NOT LIKE THIS!!!!!!!
>>96677129This Is what happens when you push the only "good thing to play" Is one single class and archetype.
>>96677342In 3,5, you could play a full party of mechanically distinct human fighters and no one would feel redundant.>sword & board tank>great weapon beatstick>master archer>cavalry harrier>but a horse in a dungeon>halfling on a riding dog with a reach weapon, whip, chain, ranseur, something that lets them hassle the enemy with trips, disarms etc while staying out of reach
>>96677513Or you could play different things so a single monster with a good hard counter wouldn't make two or more characters useless.
>>96677513>a bunch of guys that stand still and full attack>+1 guy on the end that has maneuversamazing 3.5 gameplay
>>96671458Honestly, you could do it still. That basically means another knight joined your party. It wouldn't be hard to use him as a foil for yourself.
>>96671429What system?
>>96677513>halfling on a riding dogone of my players made this in WFRP 2E and focused on slings. That little asshole is a fucking menace.
