Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started.>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128>Need a starter dungeon? Here's a curated collection:https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/94994969/#95006768>Previous thread:>>96609887>Thread Question:What are your favorite online resources to help you run your campaigns?
>>96671493>TQI play old video games and watch LPs of old games like Darkmere, Ishar, Albion, etc. They really have that OSR vibe and it puts me in the mood for GMing and helps me run killer dungeons with no holds barred (+stupidly difficult puzzles).
>>96672713I tried to capture the old school vibes but I believe am still infected with some new school aesthetics. I did the same as you and also listen to dungeon synthWhat makes old school have that vibe? Maybe if we identify the differences between those two styles we can learn to create old-fashioned stories and settings.I don't think old school is necessarily low fantasy. old D&D, Everquest, old LOTR pc games, ultima, runequest, Yendor, Wizardry, Bards tale, Daggerfall, heroes of might and magic, etc. have an retro, old-fantasy feel and have high-magic and epic quests, so it's not about nailing the gritty, sword and sorcery feel only
>>96672916Tried asking grok for pattern detection and he gave me this.It makes sense, back then games were> "delve into the deep dungeon of Dravenmoor retrieve the talisman of Vyrneth that will grant you power to defeat the evil wizard Gorath and his army of goblins".Party members: knight in shining armor, ranger, dwarf, cleric chick, elf chick. Then came the 90s with the edgy rogues and dark elves. Then the 2000s with pauldroncore and finally came identity politics.
>>96673056Most youtube and reddit advice on writing characters is based on giving them a tragic, complex backstory. Traumas, mannerisms, depth... The idea is to have muh character development because that's good writing, right?Meanwhile in earlier fantasy at most you had a revenge arc and that's it.
Anybody know of any good adventures for a pirate themed OSR campaign? Just got this in the humblebundle, and I've read Skerples pirate wavecrawl posts too.

>>96674721There's nothing wrong in acknowledging that the way OSR is played isn't the way most modern games are played. It's like saying ye olde villyage futbolle isn't the same thing as FIFA.Doesn't mean one is better than the other and I say that as someone with a real soft spot for PbtA it just means the thread is exclusive by its definitions since there are things that aren't osr relevant. That's no more a moral judgement than saying 'We shouldn't be shitting up Warhammer 40k threads by going there and posting about Malifaux'
>>96672916Innacurate pic, wanting to fuck dragons has been a thing since the old days
>>96674751> Have fun talking to non-sentient chatbots.I just did by talking to you. And unlike you, the chabot CAN answer a simple question.
>>96674732You forgot to take your meds schizo-chan. >>96674758Those memes are the equivalent of the boomer "back in mah days" bullshit but for the ttrpgs. I know its just pictures on the mongolian throat singing website but they make people who like those old school kind of games look like such massive crying faggots. I don't particularly care for PbtA but I have friends who love it.
>>96674784>Those means are the equivalent of the "Back in mah days" bullshitAnd? Doesn't mean they're inherently untrue.I's like the difference between air soft and Napoleonic reinactment. You can go 'Talking about 12 pounder cannons when AK-47s exist is cringe as fuck', but if you turn up with one instead of a Sharpe Musket then the locals are going to tell you to fuck off and come back when you're serious. That doesn't make them whiny faggots, it means you came in with the wrong attitude on their hobby, which they have every right to define the limits of as they see fit.Let's not be glib and pretend that people aren't completely right when they say that 5e has had a different tone to games before it.Just like 4e did, 3.5e did, ect.>I don't particularly care for PbtA but I have friends who love it.It's unironically great if you want to do any type of 'genre fiction' game, as long as you have an absolute laser focused idea of what the game is about then PbtA is incredibly versatile. But like I said, it doesn't belong in an OSR thread.
>>96674835Different tone does not mean bad. And those memes pretty obviously imply that OSR games are somehow more true and better. And that's just bs. They are immensely fun but so can be other types of games.
>>96674915>Different tone does not mean badAgreed. Though, would it be fair to say that one of the problems 5e has is consistent tone which does make it weaker than older editions? There are some really bizarre design choices in 5e mechanically and it's simply not as clear in its intentions/stylistic choices as older editions.I mean shit, I wouldn't even say OSR has the most distinct tone of any D&D editions, that award goes to 2e and its various settings, settings that could easily be converted to OSR mind you but aren't OSR relevant in and of themselves.

My plan so far is dumping them in front of the caves and saying "pick one" what else should i be sure to include/tweak to make it good? I want to prioritize that problem solving aspect/out of the box solutions for dealing with monsters, make it so they have plenty of tools and stuff around to do interesting things.
>>96678150Hints about which ones are deadly or easy. Hints that the caves can't restock, the war is of attrition.
>>96676787It really is as simple as whether you are on the creative side or the product side of a thing. If you enjoy making art you're not going to enjoy something that just does the art for you, the whole point is doing it yourself. But if you just want a piece of art you don't necessarily care where it came from so some AI putting it together isn't offensive to you. Some people treat playing tabletops like a product, they just want the end goal, want to "win", without actually doing the thing. They want to say they fought a dragon without actually having to deal with it. I feel it's in the same area as people who cheat at competitive video games. They just want the rank for bragging rights, they don't actually want to be good, something I've never understood.
Tired of counting, is the caves of chaos map 50 to 76 squares or 50 to 78 squares)Also, Imma be getting Castles and Crusades and Lamentations of the Flame Princess, any other recommendations, how the hundreds upon hundreds of retroclones out there?
>>96678639Fucking keyboard strikes again - *from the hundreds upon hundreds of retroclones out there?
>>96678639Don't make the same mistake I did by getting a ton of retroclones.if you are new in the hobby you wont see much of a difference. Personally I'm not a huge fan of Castles and Crusades, its just Adnd 1e with all the subsystems replaced with ability checks from modern dnd. I also don't really care for Lamentations, it only exists to center the brand which is designed around modules. You can run those modules with any other retroclone. Also it has no monster manual so you will still have to get another book.If you want to play B/x you can just play B/x, you can get prints on Drivethrurpg for pretty cheap. However you might still want to get Old School Essentials because of the clean layout and clearer presentation of the rules. Same with OSRIC for ADND 1e. The core books for ADND 1e are really good for explaining why things are the way they are but its a clusterfuck to read through, so consider getting OSRIC along ADND 1e. I also recommend looking at ACKS, it got a 2e recently but I've only played 1e, its very good. Pic unrelated.

Or is all that stuff in the pastebin?
>>96679131Yes fortunately the answer is simple. Instead of playing that game (which is off topic for this thread), you play basic/expert moldvay/cook d&d, and follow all procedures playing strictly by the book for at least 6 months weekly sessions.
>>96679131AD&D 2e is off-topic garbage, but should you want to play something good instead we have two guidebooks, one for the DM and one for players, to help you get started with proper old school D&D (that is, pretty much, your choice of OD&D, AD&D, or B/X): >>96673329

Both 1e and 2e are far more similar to each other than either is to BX or BECMI or "Original". If you can find anything about 1e it will either be directly applicable or easily transferable to 2e as they're nearly the same game. cue screechingIf you find out anything about the Basic editions they will also give you a good idea of the foundation of 2e or 1e. The core mechanics like:>character classes, experience points, levelling up>ability scores>hit dice>encounters>attack rolls, armour class, weapon damage, initiative>saving throws>spell casting>thief skillsare the same across every D&D edition from 1974 through to 1999. Third edition kept a lot of broad concepts the same but then threw in a few more mechanical things that I won't list here, and it radically changed some concepts like character class to make them very different from how they functioned in the TSR era game.Ignore the pathetic little "off topic" and "play a good game" comments like you've received already, the first is contradictory to the rest of the OP and the second is, ironically, this thread's version of HYTNPDND, and understand that advice you receive for 1e is often very useful for 2e.

>>96682589>What the fuck even is nuskool? In case you're genuine even though we both know you're not the "new school" was a movement in tabletop RPGs that was a reaction to D&D, which had its seeds in the late 70s and came into wide popularity in the late 80s, culminating in the post-Gygax shift in D&D to embrace this movement that led to AD&D 2e and the later BECMI publications leaning heavily into "story-based" gaming. The OSR is specifically a reaction against this (now decades-old) "new school."
Feels nice hitting 7th level fighter and getting that 3 point bump to your attack matrice.
>>96682589I would also argue that 2e at least belongs in the conversation because of how closely compatible it is with 1e, but the play style at the time was clearly morphing into something else.Look at the dungeon "procedures" in the 2e DMG.>exploration speed in one-minute rounds>but torches last an hour>wandering monsters check is also 10% chance every hour>even though there are 60 moves per hour now>well, unless you feel like making them every 10 minutes instead>or just make them when the story feels like it's "dragging" or the players feel "over-confident">(not a joke, it actually says that)>XP-for-gold? listed as optional, and explicitly warned against>XP is instead awarded for having "clever ideas," completing "story goals," and "good roleplaying"You could absolutely use these rules to play an old school adventure, or you could hack in the rules from B/X or something, but you could also do that with ANY edition of the game.
>>96682743The every DMG after The DMG assumes you've played the system that preceeds it. Which is awful. Were there any actual game designers left after Gygax left or was it all Douglas 'let the dmpc kill the Naga I put in a first lvl adventure' Niles tier "writers".
>>96682689What a loaf of crap
>>96682627>Please stick to OSR posting. He is unlike the crap you are posting.
>>96681884Still fully compatible, as evidenced by the fact that in AD&D itself unarmoured AC is 9 in the MM and 10 in the PHB and DMG. Either that, or you'll have to argue that AD&D isn't compatible with itself, you fucking idiot.
>>966827432e is off-topic, make your own thread for it.
>>96682627He is and youre trolling by moral crusading and purity spiraling. Please stop and talk ontopic..
>>96682278>absolutely zeroLol retard
>>96682278Ome of the worst posts on the board. Just remove yourself from this thread, schizo.
>>96682522>But I don't want people thinking I'm roughing up an actual original at the tableWhat kind of weird hand-wringing milquetoast behavior is this?
>>96678150I like to make the borderlands actually under constant minor/major threat from contingent of goblins/orcs/etc. Also factionalism between the monsters and caves, you can set them on each other or get help from one against others.
>96682917>96683646>He
>>96684902Go be a it somewhere else.
The part about all of this that is really obliviously disingenuous is that all of you avid 2ned edition players and all the 'anons' who ask about starting a 2nd edition game every thread, could go have a successful thread about 2nd edition and discuss it constantly. But you don't. You don't even play 2nd edition. You just troll. You've made 28 shitposts about 2nd ed in the last day. You could easily have gotten it together enough to play a game of 2nd ed and make a thread about it. But you don't. Unfuck yourselves.
>>96685588That's because it's one guy samefagging. He's insane, but not quite to the level of trying to run a general by himself. He'd find a few others who genuinely like 2e, but it would inevitably die like any other attempt at such a general has. So he just hangs out here and tries to pretend there's an army of guys who all have the same singular revisionist version of OSR history and also love 2e and also hate ACKS, just tons of no-really-totally-separate guys with his same weird bugbears.
>>96685588This thread is quite slow even with all OSR games available for discussion. Singling out any single OSR game and saying "You must go and have your own thread" is kind of retarded, and yet you imagine you're being clever by shitting yourself. Are you, by chance, retarded? Is that also why you talk to yourself?
Yesterday I played B/X with group I never played with before and their DM had a rule that I've never seen. I don't know how I feel about it.He called it the "Wastrel Rule". All hard coins that your character gains during each adventure needs to be either spent or converted to goods if you want to keep them. You have to spend all of your gold on either items, property, carousing and gallivanting, or training yourself or your men. Any coins between sessions are considered spent and either wasted on whores, drinks, and debts, or costs to maintain your character's properties. He said that the reason for this is that you start each session poor and needy. Why do this?
>>96686067Because he's a NuSR mudcore faggot, would be my guess
>>96686020>big tent is necessary for more consummmmmeeeGo fuck off to /todd2/.
>>96685922>durr durr samefag durr derp
>>96682917Lol it's crazy how easy to spot you are. Why do you always reply with such irrelevant cookie-cutter insults?
>>96683646There is no such thing as a purity spiral, when the exact same parameters have been held up for an entire decade, 11 years!
>>96686416>every post I don't like is from one anon because I say so.
>>96686581No but the posts that have an extremely characteristic and easily identifiable style of writing are definitely from one person
>>96686782>>96686702For fuck sake I didn't mean to double post, it told me there was an error the first time so I tried again when I got back from the bathroom, my bad
>>96686702>>96686782You can keep telling yourself that but that will not make it true.
>>96686875Not sure why you're acting so defensive or taking this so personally if it has nothing to do with you. Maybe you should try elevating your writing style since you are this easy to lump in with a known halfwit.
>>96686897Or maybe you could stop throwing retarded fits when someone brings up 2e then claim that every post that calls you out on your shit is from the same person. Use your brain when posting and not your ass.
>>96686946Lol, I don't care one bit about 2e, I'm just making fun of that one specific poster for having an extremely identifiable and laughable style of posting. So answer please, why are you getting so defensive and taking this so personally?
>>96687157>Lol, I don't care one bit about 2e, I just like to shit where I eatwell could not?
>>96687157>I was only pretending to be retarded.
>>96687346>>96687362I wasn't pretending anything, least of all to be retarded. You seem to have taken some type of personal offense over this, which I'm going to chalk up to you being the exact person that I'm talking about. Will you please just go to a different thread instead of getting your ass blasted over bantz?
>>96682689>In case you're genuine even though we both know you're notDon't be a cunt. It was a genuine question. 5e is hugely different 2e. If you're for some reason insisting on calling 2e "nuskool" then wtf is 5e and other games that come with diceless rules, or narrative only, or sensitivity warnings or any of the numerous divergences from a rpg as published in the 80s?>culminating in the post-Gygax shift in D&D to embrace this movement that led to AD&D 2eThat's a misleading comment at best. Gygax spent time in Hollywood with TSR being run by the Blumes but he came back and took control before leaving finally. Gygax had embraced that movement prior to the Blumes' involvement. Moreover, Gygax himself was at the forefront of it, as were other prominent B/X authors who wrote modules that were entirely story based, prior, I will emphasise, to the arrival of Tracy Hickman. Gygax, Moldvay, and Cook were all writing story modules. Don't try and pass that villainy on to 2e. The embracement took place under Gary's watch. Gygax wasn't the gatekeeper who fell trying to preserve us all from some dread evil, Gygax was the instigator. He started it and he didn't repent of it.
Is it alternate history fanfiction hour again?
