Remember that is is a scifi game set on distant worlds in space. The worlds can vary a lot.
VTOL's (like hovercraft) only work on planets with an atmosphere. A mech is way more versatile, able to operate on airless moons, thin atmosphere worlds or on worlds with high gravity.

Another factor is that Mechs are designed for planetary assault - they can also be dropped from space by a passing dropship, land (using jumpjets, jump packs and legs) and then do their mission, without risking the valuable and rare dropship. VTOLs are more defensive as they have to be carefully launched from the ground, good for defensive forces but only useful for attacking forces if their dropships have safely landed and secured an area to operate them from.

I prefer the twin ML since you can use some alt ammo for stuff. Also those two are shorter ranged but less heat and more damage, even if not pinpoint.

With the extra armor, it'll be able to run around spot and bully things with the MLs.

What this say to me is that the ideal scout mech should have serious jumping capability to give it mobility in terrain that ground vehicles couldn't handle (jumping vehicles are unfortunately just not reliable). Another factor in favor of the mech would be survivability, so bring a jumping mech with near-maxed armor. For other needs, bring the vees.

I just plugged the Kontio's laser bank into SSW, gave the thing maximum efficient Hardened Armor (the last half ton adds a single point extra, not worth it) and found it still underweight, so I upgraded the uPL to an SPL and added a supercharger. Now that Hammerhead can sprint at the Kontio's unaugmented top speed.

That shitter rocks as much effective armor as an Atlas while moving more than twice as fast.

As someone pointed out if you remove mech and ASF modes from the LAM you get basically Light Cavalry from Armored Core. Frankly, it would be a pretty brutal machine without the tonnage eaten by transformation equipment and reaction mass for ASF thrusters. Even if they would still have the 1.5+ cost modifier. But having a medium mech with 18+ WiGe movement is fucking bullshit.

I don't think it's that much bullshit in practice. To not crash and burn while maneuvering you need a great pilot, so the end cost is very high, so a 55 ton LAM must be competitive with much larger and shootier mechs. In some niche use cases it might be, but it can be countered by TMM decreasing weapons, artillery, bombs, etc. if you're using the full rule book. Even with the extra space from being a full-time air-mech (which is frankly the best usecase of the LAMs) I don't think it'd be overpowered.

Playing in an Override campaign with family. We've basically locked in the objective, nothing can catch the running mech with the pay data, so we're playing for salvage for a couple more turns. I feel good on that front, one of my mechs is beat up but speedy enough to stay safe, and my Stalker-8S is practically untouched, ready to smash up the remaining heavily battered enemy mechs.
