Do you prefer to play personality-less statblocks that go and dungeon delve for loot and xp or expressive theater kid drama characters who get involved in grand plots within the world and their own personal stories?
>>96686712depends on the group>proper autistic gamersthe former>good roleplayersthe latter>modern "READ THE FUCKING BOOK" illiterate gamersI pick the bullet instead>modern daddy issues crowdI pick the bullet instead
>>96686712If I wanted the former, I'd just play a video game.
>>96686712False dichotomy. There's a continuum between those extremes.
>96686712I prefer to play characters that live in a fantastical world while abstracting and handwaving things that have nothing to do with gameplay, actually.
>>96686712I like to have fully realized characters who will make their own goals in the world without stepping on the shoes of the GMs plot.
>>96686712I prefer to play slightly stylized or somewhat interesting characters who go dungeon delving for GOLD AS XP who then do quests in the overworld too.
>>96686712Never got to play the former so the grass looks pretty green, can't lie.
>>96686712As a powergamer and former theater kid, if you can't play an efficient and effective statblock with a personality and backstory, find a new hobby.
>>96686712There is a Golden Mean. Neither one of those come close. If I had to pick I'd pick the silent one though, at least he's not wasting my time with melodramatic bullshit.
>>96690549This. The forced dichotomy is actually the most anti-hobby thing imaginable, and OP should be permab& for his ultimately dismissive, reductive idea of what the hobby entails.
>>96686712If anything it'd be more like a statblock that develops a personality through their involvement in the game world.
>>96686712>3% of players>whatever the trans% of players is>>96690593>the other 95.whatever% of players
>>96686749fpbp
>>96686712If I had no expectation that I was going to be able to roleplay or enjoy an interesting story to which I could contribute, I would just play a video game.
>>96686712The beautiful in-between that Gary and Dave intended us to play all the way back in the 1970s.
Im a stat block with some personality, though most my personality is very abrasive so not many in my party ever want to talk to me apart from one guy who actually is able to work with me. Because we are similar where we build combat characters but his characters are liked alot more because they arent abrasive like mine.
>>96686712It's a spectrum, not too dissimilar to the one you're on
>>96686712Given the choice between the two, I'd go theater kid drama I guess. I can and have played stat sticks marching through labyrinthine halls killing every orc in their path before, and it was fun, but definitely not a campaign to overdose on.
>>96686880TPBP
>>96686712>478130th "hey gais who is worserer atuists or tethater kdis do I fit in yet?" idpol nigger thread THIS FUCKING WEEKYou will never fit in. Go away. Take a bath with the toaster.
>>96702608you're a faggot
Trolling outside of/b/ is against the rules.
>>96686712I have an archetype and/or an epithet in mind for the 'character' but I play a stat block the first session and develop a 'personality' from it. If it dies I don't have to develop anything else than 'Nogames OP that makes shitty threads'.
>>96686712Both can be fun, but I prefer the middleground, if that's not an option: the former
>>96686712Depends who I playing with. You got to work with the stat blocks and limits the game has. Though you can have some roleplaying fun as long as you don't have drama club rejects trying to be a diva and take over the story.
>>96690549/thread
>>96686712Point distribution system I create the character and then choose the class that better fits the concept. Roll for stats first I see what I got and then imagine what kind of person would the character be with those numbers. Is not really hard.
>>96686712Could you have phrased that question more neutrally?
>>96686712>expressive theater kid drama characters who get involved in grand plots within the world and their own personal stories?this but with autistic amounts of crunch added on topif I just wanted to dungeon crawl I'd play nethack
>>96686712What if I told you that you can read the rulebook AND roleplay. Crazy, I know.
>>96686712Yeah
>>96686712Depends on the group and game.Play ttrpgs for a few years. You'll do both.
>>96686712The latter, but I want the game to follow the rules. Sadly, it seems you can never have both.
>>96686712my backstory is the same. a paranoid hypochondriac who has extreme levels of attention to detail and has a genetic abnormality where 2 hours of sleep a night is ideal. (also a secret dhampir). i always carry a paper matchbox, which is my centering object, due to my nervous nature i constantly open and close it rapidly in a mindless twisting motion throwing it hand to hand, (roleplayed). about 2 or 3 times during a session, during a key moment or a critical roll i "accidentally" drop my matchbox, spilling out all the matches. this activates my ocd and i immediately stop what i am doing and count and replace all the matches, dodging any attacks or traps or conversation queues until i am done. this counts as my daily feat.also if we ever encounter children i roleplay out this sequence:>oh hello there small human child, do you happen to have a coin on you?>*spin on my chair, slowly climb up to stand on it, raise myself up on one leg and lean forward acrobatically*>what is that glint i see behind your ear...>*produce the coin i have palmed for this occasion*>my my a silver piece...>*tilt my head mockingly, hit it with my left hand as if im knocking out water*>no?>*tilt it the other way, hit it again with a flourish of my right hand, while i have transferred 7 coins to my left hand*>*coins tinkling on the table*>one, two, three... seven.>eight pieces of silver? what magic is this *turn to wink at the child*>*the dm having seen this about 20 times already, usually sighs and gives a muted yay or claps politely*we usually continue like this for another 5 minutes with me doing various transfers, manipulations, false palms, drops. the dm rolls for an impressed distraction +5 bonus to my pickpocket attempt of the child, successfully planting a poisoned weapon, stolen jewelry, a cursed object. charisma and dex stat dumper natural 20 or 18/99 or whatever we have depends on the version, and i simply roll or talk my way out of everything.
>>96686712I like dungeon delving strategy / sim games but with better characters than theater kids ever could manage.
>>96686712Former, please.I come from a wargaming background. That and if the most interesting things your character does, all happen in their 32 page long backstory that nobody at the table read, but they die in session 2, you will feel foolish, and you will be a fool.
>>96686781It’s easier to get the later from video games. It’s actually hard to get you come to chasm, empty your packs and start theory crafting in video games. I have never interacted with a video game puzzle as good as a table top obstacle.
>>96690567No it’s exist for a reason. The hobby used to be going into the wilderness and into a dungeon and town was between sessions. If you are playing with a theater kid you are most assuredly going to have long bull shit turns while they hold the spotlight and waste 3 hours RPing fan fiction at court.
>>96710159What do you call all these progressive theater kid threads then? Bc they seem not to be against the rules.
>>96686712I've been wanting to play a nonverbal character, either someone who lost their voice or something that never had one, and communicate through narrating what my character is doing in a room or through their body language.
>>96732141I hate that shit."RP heavy" sessions usually just end up getting dominated by the biggest drama-queen with the most bloviate backstory. It's the sort of thing that Induces me to "accidentally" eat all the snacks and leave none for anybody else.
>>96732172And feels really weird. Like when I look around the table at a bunch of fat dudes and 1 fat chick all playing make believe it makes it really obvious I don’t belong. At least with a goal oriented strategy game it feels better than make believe and like I’m exercising / reaching my brain. Similar reason I like war gaming and puzzles. Brain just needs something fun to chew on and puzzle out to reset every few weeks.
>>96732198Yup.Though it's not impossible to intertwine roleplaying and goal-oriented strategy, I think the best way is to take the goal oriented strategy approach as your framework and pack the roleplaying around that where there's room.
>>96686712i like to play the damn game with people i like
>>96686712MEN are incapable of RP, only self inserts and power gaming. they have no Imagination only what they can see (dice, numbers, stats). its why they cant get off to reading porn
>>96732242Women are incapable of roleplaying; they think it's about having a novella-length backstory that nobody at the table reads, and engaging in long self-indulgent one-to-one in-character sessions with NPC's while the rest of the party play with their phones waiting for their turn.If jokes and character-defining moments aren't occurring as you trespass in a wizard's keep, or plumb the depths of a forgotten ruin, then you are clearly so boring that giving you extra time to waffle on about yourself would just be unfair to the other people around the table.
>>96732278made up malebrained psychosis, none of the girls i play with have ever done this bc sharing is caring and the characters exist only thru their actions. but men can only play male tactical power fantasy and can not conceive of a character that isnt based on their own unexamined life
>>96686712I like the first on occasion for sure, but the second is great with the right group. Fucking love my gm man, he's crazy good with making NPCs to care about. Pic related is how I felt after saving a town from a cult and telling them to keep their gold as I rode off into the sunset for another adventure. You don't get those vibes in dungeon delving, imo
>>96687235This guy gets it
>>96732141>If you are playing with a theater kidAs someone who was literally that for 4 years, no, you're full of shit. A good player knows how to help encourage keeping the pace of the game up, something you learn as a theater kid is "yes, and." Instead of debating over some stupid detail, you accept it, build on it, and move on, quickly and efficiently, so people don't get bored.
>>96732295You sound like a tranny. Are the "Girls" you play with also trannies?Because it would explain all the shibboleths you are dropping.Get ye into the passages of Jordan, dickless halbmensch.
>>96732788classic non-response, "i didnt like what you said so must be a thing i dont like". again, men are just not creative and this proves it
>>96733177>Male brainedTroon shibboleth.>ShibbolethCulturally sensitive password or key-phrase, also a biblical reference. These are dense concepts, they can say a lot with few words, if you understand them. You talk like a person who is immersed in transsexual culture. So calling you a troon is not just a random guess, but it is a calculated one.Because you are holding their canard, comme ca.
>>96733328the fact that you think this shows more about the demons that infest your head then any terminology could about me. may God have mercy on your soul.
>>96686712I'm a bad "roleplayer" and I naturally gravitate towards mechanics over interpretation, but I try.
>>96733363>Mayul BuhraynedI know exactly what intellectual circles you run in, and I can safely mark you either as a troon, or a gender-marxist straight outta reddit. You failed to pass the smell test. You said "seevoleth" when I bade "Shibboleth".Thou art an Ephraimite.Get thee hence, smelly.
>>96686712I prefer to play divorced accountants from Ohio with a dangerous occult obsession and an illegally acquired revolver.
