Why do people hate modern DnD art so much?

Nostalgia has infected their mind

looks cool as shit honestly
i'd play this

Too colourful? I liked Todd Lockwood's works, especially for Drizzt covers. Nowadays I think that Symbaroum is a gold standard.

That's one of the better pieces.

Its weird how every PC is color coded. Why is mage guy all purple, fighter woman all yellow and cleric dude all blue?
>>
>>96694008

Looks stylish.

lol like pokemon

It would be reductive but not entirely incorrect to describe 5e PCs as fantasy superheroes. In that vein, each PC having their own medieval fantasy equivalent of spandex is on theme.
>>
I think this one is one of the better examples. I'd love for it to have more muted colors instead of color vomit, but it might be the OP image.

the avengers were truly the worst thing to happen to fantasy designs in a long time

>>96694008
I had the same thought and I feel like this whole piece had a lot of middle management fiddling with the results.

Isn't this just Larry Elmore's Dragonblade but in shittier colors?

Oh hey, isn't that picture from one of the first Conan stories where he was about to rape a snow giant enchantress?

Look at this artwork. Look at this "woman". Does this even look like a "woman" to you??? The cover art is okay but I guarantee you it's just because they realised having shitty cover art hurts sales.

That's not the worst of recent years, but if you came of age getting TSR boxed sets, the WoTC stuff just isn't as good. The compositions are weaker, the anatomy and posing is weaker, the color is weaker. The modern WoTC art is all so safe and boring.

>Oh hey, isn't that picture from one of the first Conan stories where he was about to rape a snow giant enchantress?

It is frank frazetta's work so I'd hope so.

Is that Arthas from Warcraft 3?
>>
>>96694008
>>96694062
Eh, I remember seeing another piece of art where instead people here bitched about why it seemed like everybody wore the exact same uniform which also apparently makes them look like superheroes still.

It's more than there's too many colours jostling for position. Needs a monochrome pass at about 25%, just to get it feeling more cohesivel. It's sundown, the warm lighting should be effecting objects more.
>>
Outside the colours being too Power Rangers for my taste, I think it's actually really good and kind of similar to classic art.

>Dragon is reasonable in size
>No freakshit, classic party makeup
>Mostly practical armor, no pauldron-core
>grounded forest setting

It honestly fixes a lot of the issues I have with other modern D&D art. And they even managed to do diversity that isn't just all black people.
>>
>>96693861
This is one of the better ones, honestly. It's solid. I don't think the colors are bad, but could be toned down a little. It's very fairy tale or story book looking, though. And especially since the starter set is geared towards kids, or the YA audience, makes sense.
>>
>>96693861
The posing is fucked
>dragon should be diving, but the tail position makes it seem like its awkardly trying to take off backwards
>fighter has their back to the dragon with no line of motion through the weapon, so they're just kind of standing there awkardly while the dragon flies away
>the weapon is up for a sweep at least but the dragon is high so you cant hit it with a sweep regardless (not that they're even trying)
>archer and wizard aretrying to snap-shoot something off pannel thats probably much more interesting
>The cleric is the only one doing anything, but its obscured by the fighter
The colour coding is a whole seperate issue that reminds me of the colour-coded dice that came in the starter boxes. Black archer is the D6, blue cleric D8, yellow fighter D10. There wasnt a purple one at least...
>>
>>96693861
The art itself is fine, whoever the colorist is slap pastel colors in the background and on some of the outfits so it looks weird.
>>
>>96694691
>And they even managed to do diversity that isn't just all black people.

yeah but they should all be white, let's be real
>>
>>96693861
The dragon, ie the obstacle to overcome, is not the focus of the picture and is barely intimidating in style nor is it large. The focus is on a front facing female character whose positioning, like all other characters, is awkward and not even facing the dragon. WotC is trying to make the viewer look at the player characters from an angle where they are emphasizing RPing as a fashion show with DEI principles. WotC wants to attract people to a Marvel/DC aesthetic of vaguely fantasy cosplay rather than to a simulated adventure. There is no cause and effect in this image just a bunch of glowing hands and poses that make no sense in context.
