Any tips for a beginner? I just started my acount on Chess.com and am getting smacked around.

It's normal. Play a lot, analyze your games, do puzzles, watch videos about the basic chess principles. Try the other website too (Lichess), which is superior in every aspect except for a smaller player base.

The first error made by beginners is believing that they can improve quickly. Unfortunately, learning to play chess is very time consuming. Avoid bullet for now. Take your time to look carefully at the last move made by your opponent, then find answers that make sense and don't hang pieces on unprotected squares. With time you'll find patterns and motifs that work, and you'll discard what is not working.

>Chess.com
>Play 400 games, can't break 1100
>Let's do a new account, why not
>Win against 1480, 1593, 1600 and 1700 back to back
>Check match history, they all have thousands of games
I don't get it
>>

That website allows people to choose their initial rating: there are strong players that choose 400 and "steal" ratings until they go up to their actual rating, and weak players that choose 1600 and give free Elo to everyone until they burn completely. This creates two gigantic holes: one between 500 and 800 filled with underrated players, and one around 1300/1600 filled with overrated players. Just use Lichess if you want to know your real rating.

Forgot to say that "New to Chess" is 400, "Advanced" is 1600.

Same reason why you see large arena tournaments with a ridiculously low rated player at the top.
>>
>>96719106
I picked intermediate and started against a 1000/1100
Very strange

No but thanks for the cancer I've got while trying to find it.

Do any of you bother playing against bots on chess.com or just against other people? Just started playing it and not sure if bots are worth it
>>
>>96729187
In this general we always recommend to avoid bots, except the Maia bots that try to play like humans: https://www.maiachess.com

Neat thanks
>>
>>96729187
Playing against bots teaches you how to beat bots. Playing against humans teaches you how to beat humans.

The problem with bots is that they either play almost impeccably or they get dumbed down to where the errors they make are artificial errors like randomly moving a piece every x moves with x% chance. Whereas with humans you can sort of intuit why they did something stupid.

>>96722480
My rating is the exact same on Lichess and chess.com. It think it's only different if you are under 1600, because chess.com allows players to start at 1600 or 400, which messes all the ratings up for those levels.

It's about even between 2100 and 2600.
Under 2100, any given Chesscum ELO is better than its Lichess equivalent. By a lot.
Above 2600 it's the opposite.
>>
>>96729654
I tried it and didn't win any game no matter what I did.
>>
>>96719072
So everyone under 1600 is randomly playing anyone between 400-1600 sounds like. So until you're better than actual 1600s you could be stuck at any ranking below that.
>>
>>96733558
Yes but it also means a lot of shitters can brag about having a 4-digit ELO, which is awesome, innit.
I guess it explains why Reddit love Lichess so much.
>>
>>96733724
It can't be because it looks and works better. That would make no sense.
>>
>>96734594
>it-it looks better
Pathetic.
>>
>>96735785
He's right.
>>
>>96729654
I play Go, anon. I haven’t practiced in a while because it’s impossible to find other players here. I’m probably down to 13kyu now
