I am developing a love hate relationship with my army as I paint more and more of it.
On the one hand I love how it looks, I love the lore, I love the concept of rotten, shambling marines advancing slowly and contaminating everything with their presence.
But on the other hand the models are so overdetailed it's actually starting to impact my enjoyment of painting them. Every single nook and cranny has something. You thought this was an armor plate? Actually, there are leeches poking from underneath. There? Some tentacles growing. What about there? Horns, and the horns also have slugs on them by the way. What about the cloak? Oh, it actually has some hanging cables. Well, I guess the gun is just corroded metal, right? You thought, here are some fungal growths and for good measure put some parts of skin/flesh in the gun barrel. Oh and there? There's clearly pus seeping. And while we're at that why not put some pustules on the flesh? And why not take this one plate that seems flat and put a nurgling peeking from it? And why not add some skulls hanging here? And why not add some more slugs to the skulls?

It's not even that I have to paint all of it, or that it takes a long time, I don't mind that, it's that the model feels SO cramped. I feel like I never have space to make smooth brush motions because every single time I try to say, glaze something in an area I have some growths to the left and a gigantic kneepad that has a massive horn which for good measure has some slugs and poison seeping.

I'm closing in on 2000 points painted so I'm going to keep powering through it but man. I painted some orks as a palate cleanser some months ago and it was so enjoyable to just be able to glaze and work on the skin without continuously bumping into details. Sorry for the wall of text, I have no one to talk to.

Would have been pretty cool if the ones fighting the EC and Fulgrim were the Sons of the Phoenix but GW is unable see or take advantage of something good even if it's on their face.
>>
>>96725846
Modern GW has had a big problem with over designing sculpts for the last decade plus. CAD has given way to countless tasteless sculptors producing Etsy style tasteless sculpts.

Just had a look at the rules, they seem neat enough. Increases the cost of enemy stratagems if they are 12 inches from him and then if hes targeted by psychic attacks the attack subtracts 1 from both hit and wound rolls.

Not sure how overall useful he'd actually be seeing as there's not alot of people running psykers unless its grey Knights or Tsons.

Also cool paint job dude

Different anon here, unironically moved to 3d printing because of GW's sculptors not being able to keep it in their pants with CADslop. Not to say that other creators don't have the issue, but at least you can find some barebone models in the ocean of STLs out there. I miss the Midhammer era of kits having the extra details just being optional gubbins instead of shit you had to scrape off and green stuff over.

Got a nice chat with a lgs manager about the future of GWs games in general. He gives the company 5 more years before it starts losing money because of price increase and younger people not being interested in the games anymore. Thinks GW is on pirate mode trying to milk as much money as possible from the customers before going down and that's where the price increases are coming from. Interested in what you guys think about the matter. The conversation started because that store and others in the same area have started creating their own megapacks at highly reduced prices (slaanesh marines specifically) because they don't sell

>>96726728
We already had a similar situation in 40k 7th edition/WHFB 8th edition. The moment GW looks like it will start losing money they'll extract their head from their asses, act sensibly for six months/a year and it will result in record sales everywhere for the next decade. It already happened.

>Face the Sun- Trial of Heart

>Not all Neophytes become full Astartes. Many die in battle, fail to integrate properly with their implants, or fall short in the eyes of their mentor. Those who endure all that comes before must still face the Trial of Heart, a final gauntlet of judgment that proves not only their martial competence but their mental and spiritual fortitude.
>Phase one: The Ashen Road
Each Neophyte, upon nearing the end of their training, is pulled from regular duties and entered into a period of seclusion, contemplation, and labor. The Ashen Road varies in length, usually days or weeks.

>Phase II: The Shaped Trial

>When their mentor believes the time is right, they design a trial reflecting their pupil’s weaknesses.

>If successful, the neophyte is sent back to the Rubblecrown on Oracleus Minor itself. Once there they are escorted to a secret chamber in the very heart of the massive vault complex’s Apothecarion wing. Within this chamber, called the Occulus Solari resides the sleeping dreadnought Sokar Sunbreath.
Connected to his sarcophagus is the Cradle of Faith, a cogitator-throne laced with psycho reactive materials. The neophyte dons the Crown of Hopes, a neural circlet of ancient design that feeds their thoughts, memories, and fears into the machine. The device was found in a sealed medical vault below one of the abandoned hives of Oracleus in M37, rather than turning it over to Tejana the Coal Hearts kept the throne and circlet for their own use. Eventually integrating it fully into their traditions as Sokar began to sleep longer and longer.

Rip my greentext.

>For a time, the neophytes are connected to Sokar and their minds mingle with that of the ancient. Sokar does not speak with words, but visions. Terrible visions of death and loss in the service of the Starbinder. Some describe it as reliving memories under judgmental scrutiny. A few hear his voice, deep, patient, disappointed, proud, all depending on the neophytes performance facing the worst.

>All who have undergone the rite report feeling the dreadnoughts weariness and pain during that brief connection. Those who meet his standards are released, often with faint memories of facing their own death in the name of the Imperium. Those who fail have their minds burnt out, reducing them to drooling brain dead meat, useful only as servitors.
>After their time on the throne, successful neophytes are taken directly to have the Black Carapace implanted.

>This is not the whole secret. Known only to the very highest officers in the chapter, the Sokar encountered in the mental world of the Cradle of Faith is not actually that of the dreadnought. Instead it is a construct based off of his mind, sharing his memories and awareness. It remains connected to his sarcophagus when he sleeps in order to continually update itself and use his vast knowledge. It is called the Vox Solaris Mortis. This construct remains within the machine even during the brief times when Sokar is disconnected from the Cradle and awakened and has shown signs of awareness.

>Worryingly, in recent years other voices have been described in the visions experienced by Neophytes within the Cradle, indicating that the ancient machine may be failing, or worse yet, integrating memories and personality pieces from the neophytes that have sat within and failed its test. A mind construct growing or changing stands on the very precipice of becoming an abominable intelligence and as such this possibility is viewed with growing alarm by those few within the chapter aware of it.

Lore question for the learned anons. I was wanting to brew up some /mydudes/ with this idea, and I'm curious if it sounds plausible before I get too into it.

I'd like to use the Black Templars as a starting point, with a small part of one of the many Crusade Fleets (100 or 200 Astartes, perhaps) getting bogged down trying to root out (tenacious enemy of choice) from a potentially significant Imperial system. It's currently infested with (enemy), but might be valuable in the future if cleansed, so it's worth some effort. They refuse to back down despite slow going (being Templars), and a considerable length of time passes with near-constant battles. (A hundred years, maybe two.) Over time, they basically "go native", creating local supply chains, recruiting from local worlds, adapting their fighting style to local conditions, etc etc.

They manage to suppress the enemy, but can't yet completely eliminate them. Templar reinforcements aren't available in their area. Deciding it's too dangerous to back off and Crusade elsewhere, as the enemy might resurge while the Guard or other forces are slowly redirected (with the Administratum's usual haste and skill), they instead petition the Administratum for permission to found a new Chapter with themselves as the seed crystal in order to eventually win this conflict, and to avoid the usual 100 year waiting period for a Chapter's founding (which could also give the enemy breathing room to recover).

The end goal is to create a Chapter that remembers the fire of their Black Templar origins, but has also become something else through the vagaries of war and Imperial service. Templars in blood and culture, but not as much in combat style, especially as they replenish their numbers with local stock.

Cool idea/stupid idea?

Haven't decided yet. Their Fortress-Monastery is going to be inside of a gas giant though. I have this vision in my head of slowly but steadily, their naval vessels that have become too damaged for Warp travel (and can't be readily repaired in this warzone), are sunk into the gas giant's clouds until they find a buoyant point, then merged together over time as one huge fortress, creating the staging ground that eventually becomes a permanent base of operations.

So maybe something gas-giant related, like a blue cloudy motif, or something like Jupiter's red/orange/brown swirls. With the addition of Templar crosses, of course.

Also they'd start deploying more aircraft over time and less tanks. Cause I really like Drop Pods, Xiphon Interceptors, and Caestus Assault Rams, haha.

Almost certainly they'd harvest water, oxygen, hydrogen and other useful gases from the atmosphere into the Fortress-Monastery for processing. Probably also electrical power from the lightning storms and powerful magnetic field usually present with gas giants. Maybe biomass (edible or otherwise) from whatever flora and fauna might have evolved to live within the endless ocean of clouds.

Harvesting the core for *mineral* resources wouldn't really be possible, but a gas giant will almost always have many moons accompanying it, some of which will make good outposts for mining. Possibly even places one might find a Forge World for technical assistance if the moon is comparable to a Galilean moon or larger.

First draft of paint idea.

Basically a fade from pale blue at the top to dark blue at the bottom, with black helmets retained as an homage to their Black Templar roots. It's dark gray in the image, but that's mostly because Black Templar black becomes Vantablack hyper black in this digital form and looks really really bad. Gray is just for visibility.

This is basically the "Neptunian" idea for a camo scheme, as opposed to the "Jovian".

I'm not sure what to do with the aquila & skull though. Should they also be black, or something else?

Seems kinda contrived.

If it's important enough to have 100-200 astartes tied up for 100-200 years, and still fail to completely purge, then Helbreacht is going to give a shit and order reinforcements there or other chapters are going to get interested.

May as well just have a chapter founded from BT stock as a warden for that region of space, with good relations with them so they send a few sword brethren squads to instruct and aid them. Kinda like a Novamarines/Dark Sons deal. Defining the enemy they fight and the local customs they take on is more important for the chapters identity, keep the BT inheritance simple.

As opposed to call in support from any of the thousand other chapters? Or even the Imperial Guard nearby local PDFs? They are Space Marines. They could just glass the entire planet from orbit if they don't have another choice.

Makes little sense, imo. Chapters spawned off from 3rd and later foundings are kind of weird anyways. The High Lords of Terra only make new chapters for really specific issues. If they contacted them and got permission to make a new Chapter (which would take way longer than to call for reinforcements from somewhere else btw) they could just dispatch ANY of the Imperial Troops themselves anyway.

That said a Chapter as devoted as the Templars would never "go native". They may try to create local supply chains and recruit from local worlds, sure. But that's just a crusade. If the have the ability to recruit they don't need to found a new Chapter either.

Point is Templars are still space marines. If winning a war requires them to adapt their tactics they will do so. Just call it the "my dudes" crusade and you got all the exuses you need. If you want to DIY a new scheme then you don't need to bend one of the major chapters out of shape either.

You need to sit with this idea a bit more, imo.

Aside from that, they're on the nicer side of muhreenz. Only because its rare for them to find a human alive when war breaks out on their world. They're deep in ork and tyranid territory, a fringeworld.

Nobody on the planet runs a mix of choppas and shootas and the kit gives you no option to build what you want

>do the Sisters accept Abhumans into their ranks?
Sisters hate mutants and abhumans even more than Black Templars. Hell they even consider Space Marines unclean mutants and only BARELY respect some chapters like Black Templars and Salamanders (curiously enough they don't like Ultras). They get wet for Adeptus Custodes though. To the point that the Custodes feel uncomfortable among Sisters of Battle.

SoB consider marines to be abominations.
They're clearly not normal baseline humans, they are a result of unnatural meddling with the Holy Human Form, thus they are unclean and to be treated with suspicion and scorn.
The only thing stopping the Ecclesiarchy from openly calling for total marine death is the fact that they were created by the Emperor.

Marines are better and not beholden to the Ecclesiarchy. They answer only to the High Lords and were created by the Emperor himself.
SoB only exist to circumvent rules that forbade the Imperial Church from having men under arms. And the Imperial Church usually has the monopoly on bossing people around using the Emperor as leverage. Can't do that do a Space Marine.

Basically political penis envy.
>>
Should I put a chaos lord or chaos sorcerer with my terminators? Both seem really good.

>>96729571
That part of the fluff has always been stupid.
>we hate these guys because they are mutant abominations
>but they were made by our god so we have to like them
It just should be the bottom part and the top line should be for fringe SoB orders.
Because it makes no fucking sense, it's like if christians said "we hate angels because they are abominations, but since they were made by God we have to like them".
It just sounds stupid, but also incredibly contrived way of trying add conflict to the setting.
>>
>>96729649
Sisters literally have a representative at the High Lords table in addition to the Ecclesiarchy representative. They have 2 slices of the cake where everyone else gets just 1. Sisters can and do boss around Space Marines. They literally have a bigger political dick than Space Marines. They are also a much bigger, stronger and better equipped organization than Space Marines save for chapters that cheat like Dark Angels and Templars.
>>

>>96729673
It is stupid. On one novel a sister told Guilliman he is wrong about The Emperor, the Imperium and basically everything and she broke out an unstable psyker from protective custody killing Ultramarines in the process. In the end I think Guilliman had her executed. They do love Custodes on the other hand. They made a saint out of some girl only because she saw 3 Custodes teleport to her position.

>>96729676
Can't say that that correlates with the setting I've been reading about for 25+ years in any meaningful way.
Either way it's politics. Ecclesiarchy is threatened by anyone they can't boss around. You can TRY to tell them what to do, but if it doesn't work it will blow up in your face in a bad way.

>It also doesn't help that Custodes like the sisters more than they like marines so according to the sister codex they side with them much more often during disputes.
I guess that would explain it. Custodes were and always will be Palace Guard and nothing more to me.

As far as I can tell SoB do not have any direct power over SM whatsoever. They are part of the Ministorum. As such they might have political power, but no actual authority.
>>
>>96729736
I sentence you to a penitent crusade for your action of independence.
>>
>>96729737
Sisters got moved to the High Lords of Terra so thats where their power comes from now. I think it was Guilliman who gave them a seat. They Ecclesiarchy also has another seat so thats 2 votes and then you have Trajan who will side with them. That's enough to boss anyone around. Of course a chapter can ignore it but it never ends well so they almost always listen.
>>
>>96729737
Nobody has real direct power over Astartes. It's the reason the line in your graph is dotted and why chapters like Minotaurs exist.
>>
>>96729737
That looks quite outdated. Assassinorum has a seat at the High Lords Table, so do Custodes and probably more I don't remember.
>>
>>96729743
they don't get condemned for independence, they get condemned for acquiring more power than they ought to have. political, logistical, military.
>>
>>96729764
>>96729754
IIRC fluff always was that there are some fixed seats and then a bunch of seats that rotate between different organisations. Sisters and assassins are the latter.
>>
>>96729765
That's what independence means. They either get brought back into the fold, destroyed or sent on a suicide mission.
>>
>>96729754
>I think it was Guilliman who gave them a seat.
Oh. Yeah, the whole Custodes randomly becoming an army and Primarchs coming back thing are decisions motivated by corporate greed and not the intention to write anything good or even intelligible. I have to admit that the grumpy old man in me is just gonna ignore anything that happened in that era and leave it there.

Only in an absolute sense, they are still independent in the sense they are not dependent on the imperium micromanaging their deployments or line of supplies.
They can choose where to fight, how to fight and can make their own stuff, mostly.
But they're still meant to stay within the lines, if they overstep, they get punished.
>>
>>96729799
Crisis suits are reserved for the fire caste, they get furious if other castes pilot one, let alone if other races do.

Similarly there's no freedom of relationship in the tau empire, things stay in the racial and caste separations and are ordained by a higher authority.

The Ecclesiarchy just covers it up and goes as far as to groom use surgery to create body doubles to replace the traitor sisters.

Custodes have a 100% loyalty rate, astartes have a 50%, on top of custodes bascially never being seen while astartes are super rare you can run into them. So to the religiously deranged you have the Golden good boys (and girls) you never see who have never slipped to chaos so its so easy to idolise them as the perfet golden order of warriors. On top of being the God Emperors personal guards and stuff.
Traitor sisters dont get thought about and how they're just ans fallable as the space marines. Hell their hatred of astartes is probably just projection of themsevles and how many of their sister fall to chaos
>>
>>96729903
>SoB also go traitor and join Chaos
NTA but not really. You have like one mention of "Chaos" SoB from that one time Angron opened a giant ass rift in the middle of an Imperium fleet and everyone got possessed by daemons.
Which is pretty different from the slow and insidious kind of corruption. Anyone can be turned into a Chaos Spawn for example, a Chaos Spawn made from Custodes or Grey Knights doesn't mean there are Chaos Custodes or Chaos Grey Knights.

you guys forget that there is reason for it in 40k. The Ecclesiarchy is not allowed to have men under arms. To accentuate the fact that they have women fighting is the whole point.
The boob plate is a statement of "look we are following the rules, no men here".

There are no options other than that.
At best you could argue the arms are crossed in front of the chest, but in any case the hips and groin must coincide otherwise a step forward of the suit breaks the marine's legs, meaning the saturnine helmet is a set of cameras with no real head inside.

That is a strange change, maybe Carnival of Pain is the nickname to him and his personal army of pain engines thats disconnected from the Coven?

There absolutely are. You could chop them up and plug them into the suit.
I vaguely remember something like that in connection to Iron Hands and suits that had faulty radiation shielding, i.e. they were killing the pilots with exposure, but were powerful enough to justify their use. I might mix up my sci-fi though, not sure where I got that from.

I don't know. He lives (lived I guess) on a planet that gives off radiation that makes him look weird.

But there used to be some more details about the various suits. MkV produces excessive heat, but grants better upper body strength for example, which is why it is popular with melee guys. Stuff like that doesn't have rules but pops up in the background every once in a while.
Like I said I don't remember where I got that from, but there are more options. You can pilot a dread without being as tall as a house.

I think Xcom 2 being after that you canonically lost is cool. The guerrilla fighter element is cool. Also all of the environments like the lost cities they did with the DLC is pretty neat.
Also chimera squad, at least to me, always felt more like a spin-off title than a full proper game.

>Why the hell did I waste hours of my life killing alien shitbags then?
Because it's fun? It's still a nice game.
Also Xcom 2 is unironically the more realistic scenario out of any potential alien invasion of earth.
If there is a race that can somehow space travel to our planet, most likely with FTL technology, then we are quite literally just ants under their boot and they would 100% fuck humanity up before we can put up much of a fight.

Seriously though Xcom2 annoyed me on multiple levels. The alien heroes don't follow the same rules you have to follow. Really annoying on timed missions and adds nothing to the gameplay. Shit design there.
The human heros were a nice addition. But ultimately the whole game felt like a waste of time.

The middle-east shit wasn't about control or conquering, if the US wanted to turn the entirety of the middle-east into rubble, glass and craters, they could've done so.
The reason why they didn't do this was purely because the goverment never had the intention to control that desert shit hole.
They were there only for
1. oil
2. keep war going so military industrial complex keeps churning profit that is owned by (((them)))
3. plant fuck loads of opium to fund the glowies
