Or should it be more confrontational like in early D&D games?
TQ: Depends on your tables playstyle honestly
>>96730025>How supportive should the DM be of the players and their characters? I do my best to have a good blend of "Fans of my PCs" as well as "Obstacles my party must overcome"
>How supportive should the DM be of the players and their characters? Or should it be more confrontational like in early D&D games?I present a world and a situation that's loaded for the players to win. They're going to win most encounters and find most of the treasure. But if the treasure is hidden and they don't explicitly search the zone and failed a general "I search the room" check, they're going to miss it. It's not easy to die in my games if you don't hand your own ass to the monsters and flee when they're beating you up.It's generally easy to complete the goals and quests, even if many steps.
>>96730025>TQI’ve never understood the confrontational approach. Even laying aside the fact that the DM is the rule arbiter and therefore can just win at any time, the DM is also capable of engineering a scenario that hard counters any or all of the PCs. Yes, asymmetrical games can be played competitively, but the only real restriction on a DM is the players’ patience. It just seems as nonsensical as ranked Calvinball.
>>96730025The dungeon craves PC blood and I'm going to give them to it
One adult blue dragon up against 11 PCs/NPCs of 6th/7th level, with each core class represented exactly once (one Rogue/Bard multiclass and the remaining ten single class): what does this encounter look like? The characters can see the dragon coming and will have some time to plan and prepare before rolling initiative: one minute of in-game time and one week in real time between sessions.
>>96731213If the dragon is separated from its minions, its going to very quickly realize its outmatched and flee assuming it isn't killed in a single round.
>>96731213Why would an Adult Blue Dragon even bother? Is it also retarded, incurring a massive INT penalty?
>>96731292Five PCs killed her son and five NPCs killed her other son.
>>96731213The dragon flying overhead and strafing everything to death with a breath weapon. Or does the party have something to stop that?
>>96731352One of the NPCs is a night-themed Dreams Druid who may or may not Conjure Animals eight giant owls or giant bats as flying mounts. They will get one-shot by lightning breath even if they succeed on their DEX saves, but I think it could be a cool way to allow the Paladin, the Monk, the Fighter and the Barbarian to be useful. Should I use this right away on the Druid's first turn, or keep it in reserve to see if they need it?
>>96731394By all means, start the fight right, get into the air.
What is your short list of spells that should be seriously considered for a sword and board Fighter with a Ring of Spell Storing?
>>96731213A very dead dragon, especially if at least one of those 7th level characters can Polymorph someone into a Giant Ape.
>>96731412Thank you. I don't know if it is the tactically right decision with frail mounts and the potential for considerable fall damage, but it is the cool and hopefully memorable option.>>96731596Depends on how strictly the DM enforces free hands for somatic and material components.>>96731643The Wizard might be able to do it to the Paladin, the Monk, the Warlock or the Cleric, but the rest are 6th level (and the Wizard hasn't actually chosen her two new spells from level-up yet).
>>96731596Absorb Elements, Shield, Jump, Expeditious Retreat, Divine Smite.
>>96731715Divine Smite is a Paladin feature, not a spell. Shield and Absorb Elements are very good options.
>>96731707The tactically right decision would be to corner the dragon in an enclosed space so as to limit its ability to escape or skirmish. Failing at that, fighting it in the air at least gives the party options. Plus, any party of 6th-7th level adventurers that doesn't have Fly or Feather Fall isn't long for the world anyway.
>>96731731Divine Smite is a spell and can be scribed or stored.
>>96731743The dragon is coming for them, not the other way around. The environment is going to be to the dragon's benefit, which is why as many characters as possible needs a way to match the dragon in either range or mobility. If only half the party can contribute, it's a 1 vs 6 and the characters may have a problem on their hands.
>>96731764Divine Smite is explicitly a class feature that every Paladin gets at 2nd level.

>>96730025>>96730032TQ: yeah, some players want to be babied, some want you to be brutal. You’ll get a sense around session 3 if they just want a relaxed type of play or hardcore.Personally, I like playing with my players knowing death is a single stupid decision away.
>>96730025>TQThere's a fairly clear line between creating challenge for players and being an ass to them. I want my players to have characters with interesting stories, but challenges to overcome, and try to do that.>>96731213I had a group of 7 PCs at 7th level action economy an adult blue dragon to death in it's lair. Give it some wyrmlings or something to eat up attention, because it's going to get overwhelmed if it gets caught on the ground.
>>96731596Shield, Silvery Barbs, Healing Word, Misty Step
>>96731825???It's a spell.
>>96731596If you have a way to get it in the ring, shield of faith.
>>96731874I am not the guy you're arguing with, I just hate your shitty link.
>>96731707>The Wizard might be able to do it to the Paladin, the Monk, the Warlock or the ClericMonk is probably the best choice there, since the Paladin would be better off shield the party from dragonbreath via Aua, and a Cleric has their own support spells. As you said, depends on the level-up choices, but I've seen a surprising number adult dragons get their asses handed to them by a giant ape. Not single-handed, but enough to severely help tilt the odds in the party's favor, especially with a group of that size.
>>96730025Why aren't you playing PF2e yet?
>>96731864I think the fight is going to be swingy by design, since the breath weapon is going to bring anyone who fails their save to 0 really quickly, an open area with free access to the sky is going to favour the dragon, and legendary actions are a thing.>>96731972Absolutely, although a case can be made for any of the remaining three if they have gotten an important concentration spell up and/or have just survived a breath weapon with little HP remaining, since the Giant Ape equals or betters their CON saves. Notably, the Monk is the only one with Evasion among all 11 characters.

The extra damage is 2d8 for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 5d8. The damage increases by 1d8 if the target is an undead or a fiend, to a maximum of 6d8.
>>96732604We live in 2025 granpap.
>>96732650This is the 5e thread, not the 5.24e thread.
Im playing a level 3 scribes wizard, what level 2 spells should I take
>>96732661>9/14 links in the op are 2024
>>96730025>How supportive should the DM be of the players and their characters? Pretty vague question. Yes? Sure?>The second questionWait, as in not killing characters? I guess it depends on the table, but for me, no chance of death is lame as hell. If that's the case, nothing matters.>Or should it be more confrontational like in early D&D games?Depends on the table. A table that it down for it is going to have a phenomenal time.
>>96732684Misty Step has a range of 330 feet for you. Vortex warp is a must for you too. Other than those Web, invisibility and levitate are all good 2nd level options.Wizard is best played as a battlefield controller and Scribes is one of the best at that.
>>96732684Augury. It's not a spell you're going to cast more than once a day, and once a day you can cast a ritual using its normal time. With that, augury is a minute to ask the DM a question about what you should do.Very underrated.
>>96732684Diversify your damage pool so that you always have something to transmute.
>>96732797at level 5 im going into tempest cleric for the channel divinity
>>96730025Being a supportive DM, what is the most cinematic way in which I can give the Monk (who has a subplot going with the setting's deity of storms) a Staff of Thunder and Lightning?
>>96732846Fist-fight a Storm Giant on a mountaintop
>>96732846Does he already have a staff he likes? Give him a quest in a dream, to slay creatures of thunder and creatures of lighting. When he wakes up, his staff lets him cast absorb elements as a reaction by spending a ki point. Each CR appropriate creature of those elements they slay grants his staff one feature of the staff. >a giant lighting eel>a living mighting bolt>a behir>a shambling mound>an air elemental>a bronze dragon>a Cloud giantAny of these might be appropriate, or you can adjust their health and PB to make them a challenge. Once he acquires 5 kills, a 6th will complete the staff, granting it a +2. You can also let him use the magic action options as bonus action using flurry of blows.
>>96732915She has already received a prophecy roughly translating to "The godless needs the power of the storm like silver from the heavens in her hands" from our native language. At the moment, her main weapon is a spear with the Returning Weapon infusion from a friendly Artificer.
>>96732956Yea, then during a really rough fight, have a bolt of lighting strike right next to her where a staff primed for gathering power rests, then she can go slay the creatures.
>>96732846>what is the most cinematic way in which I can give the Monk a Staff of Thunder and Lightning?brother, this shit writes itself>lightning storm>hear a voice in the thunder>a lone large tree at the edge of a cliff, battered by the elements>lightning strikes it, it splits in half>in the middle of the shattered trunk, one splinter of the trunk is fuming and coursing with power>as the monk picks it up, he hears the voice in the thunder again
>>96732846>>96732956If she ever rolls 20 on a death save, do this.
>>96732518Too many ratgirls, anon.
>>96733631The nezumi haven't made it back into 5e yet?
>>96733723Nope. Thus far, we are flying sans ratgirls. The closest we've gotten were the angelic sparkledog furries in the 2024 playtest, but those were dropped for fear of angering all seven players who give a shit about aasimar.
>>96733749We need more skaven furries to get into D&D.
How much would a 15% tip to your barmaid be on average for the listed price of a meal in 5e be?
>>96732518Fuck off to your own general. Pathfinder is the worst. It’s for people too retarded to play a non d20 game but too pretentious to just play D&D.
>>96733982My pc tips all ths silver in his pocket to the cute barmaid because he has 10k gp
>>96734013That makes him a fucking G
>>96733982titties too small, face too ai, 12 copper
>>96734069>face too aiThat's just the artist style
>>96733982Depends on the quality, the 2024 Handbook lists a comfortable meal at 2 silver so a 20% tip (pay women what they're owed) would be 4 copper
>>96733982tits too big, I wouldn't tip whatsoever
>>96734131face too detailed in comparison to the rest of the image, 8 copper
>>96733622nta but that looks gay
I miss 3.5’s book release schedule. Like it takes ages for anything new to come out in 5e.
>>96734566The worst part is that not only does it take ages for anything to come out, the quality also isn't any better than the rapid-fire content mill.
>>96734566That was because Hasbro counted sales by subsidiary, not by brand. Wizards could pump out a dozen sourcebooks filled with 90% unplayable trash, 7% useful content, and 3% shit that breaks the game over its knee, and not worry a damn thing about how well they sold because they could just coast on MtG sales. Now, Hasbro expects individual brands to account for profits and expenses, so WotC's D&D department is cutting the margins as atomically thin as they can, shrinking their team to the skeleton of a skeleton crew and trying their utter damnedest not to spend any money actually writing or drawing anything.
>>96734566i look at my complete pf1 pdf collection and it's insane the amount of content. I could spend years just reading everything. And that's just the official shit. And it's the fucking side game at a time when dnd wasnt even as popular as today. Sure you could argue for a moment pf1 had it over 4e but still. As I read i keep thinking "they had time to write all this stuff". Meanwhile every 5e release feels like a problematic pregnancy
ugh, I'm really attached to the idea of a bard who accidentally lichified himself by pouring his soul into an epic poem but the lich aesthetic doesn't do it for me. wdid?
>>96734934flavor is free? just a guy with no soul, it can look and behave like anything you wantfor mechanics use any undead or construct race
>>96734934Becoming a lich is rather difficult to do by accident. Though it's also notable that by default, liches don't suddenly turn into skeletons as soon as they become one. A lich who maintains their body can continue to look normal. It's just that when you don't feel hunger or thirst and you're an immortal nerd who wants to study in their fortress for days on end, maintaining that usually isn't on a list of a lich's concerns. That said, you don't even need to copy that so specifically. The loss of a soul could just end up with something like the shadowfell races, where you're grey and gaunt, but not outright skeletal.
>>96734957Skelly liches are cool though
>>96735115
>>96735128Basic skellys are brainless husks. But liches have bound their minds to their decaying bodies through the use of a phylactery so still remain smarter than most people as high level mages.
>>96735115Sure, but I was replying to someone who specifically wanted different atheistic.
