Thoughts on running a dark academia game? What is your take on this aesthetic? Advice?I'm thinking of runing something about ecret fraternities somewhere in Oxbridge, murder mysteries, and perhaps some occult or paranomral phenomena
>Thoughts on running a dark academia game?Nigger, it's a visual aesthetic. You might as well ask on my thoughts on running a Frutiger Aero game. Just run Call of Cthulhu.
>>96738706Check out the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling OP.
What system? Maybe WoD?
>>96738951Sure, but there are many playable aspects. Murder mysteries, academia spaces, secret societies, collegiate houses ,gloomy atmosphere, occult elements... That's like saying you can't play a steampunk or cyberpunk game because it's an aesthetic. There are dark academia books.>>96739082I was thinking gumshoe since it's a murder mystery or quickstart cthulhu 6th edition. The idea is for players to be students with low lethality, so it makes sense they'd devote some time to creating their character as opposed to rules-lite systems where you make your PC real quick.>>96739051Never heard of it but thanks
>>96738706The only reference I can think of is the Wednesday series
>>96739844 The Albrecht's Laboratories area and tileset in Warframe has a dark academia aesthetic, albeit with a dash of sci-fi.
>>96738706Is there something you particularly want aside from the aesthetic.Trail of Cthulhu seems perfect for what you are going for it's a bunch of academy kids trying to figure out stuff
>>96739844>that pictureWhere the wypipo at?
Here is a man who loved the Occult. Include something left behind from him would be cool. Buried Nazi secrets.
>>96738706I have to say, I always have one big question whenever it comes to these settings. What happens when the students (i.e. the PCs) get too powerful?Think about it this way, these people are at the equivalent of college. They (technically speaking) haven't even gone out into the world to start their careers. If the PCs are insanely powerful (and they will get really powerful at some point) just from attending college, what will they be like once they're unleashed upon the outside world? Is that the usual standard for graduates?
>>96742550There are gaming systems that are not D&D where character progression has weaker scaling than linear.
>>96742550What do you mean by powerful? I have one shots in mind rather than a campaign.
There's that Magnus Archives game, though I've heard mixed things about it. Biggest complaint seems to be that the mechanics don't fit the setting well and it would've worked better as a COC-type game rather than whatever Monte Cook thing they went with.
>>96738706My thoughts can be summarized by this picture.
>>96738951Isn't that kinda what Infinity is? Parts of it, anyway.
>>96742449>Academia de Goblinos
>>96739844Quick head count says it's about 20 nonwhite out of 80 total. Not exactly insane numbers for somewhere that's a "school for misfits" in a majority white country.
>>96744918Shit meant to reply to>>96742449
>>96738706Miskatonic University focused CoC adventure is the best I could come up with
>>96738706What the fuck is "dark academia"? You can't expect people being familiar with the autismal categories for every little thing you fags keep pulling out of your asses.
>>96745337>What the fuck is "dark academia"?People confusing being subject to indoctrination with development and romanticizing it.
>>96738706That image is such a mood.
>>96738706Chthulu has an entire part of its setting that is Miskatonic University, pretty much all his books are situated around a fictional area of New London, and this is a prevalent landmark. I've even generated random AI slop for when I would come around to DM a Miskatonic investigation session.
>>96745286Or Hogwarts/Strixhaven if the wizards weren't little bitches and treated the dark arts as any other subject, alongside good old necromancy and calling things that are better left not called into the world. Even a real university can be taken and spun into a what-if/alternate history or just "actually it's like this" kind of setting.
>>96739796You can't play a "steampunk" game, no. Cyberpunk isn't an aesthetic, it's a philosophy.
>>96738951>You might as well ask on my thoughts on running a Frutiger Aero gameI kinda hate that my kneejerk reaction was "wait how do you do that?" but it's just the same shit as retards trying to insist that "solarpunk" is a real genre and also something that can be made into a game and not just a fancy aesthetic farmed for plebbit upboats.
>>96747324tephra, ecryme, fathomless gears, nightwatch, space 1889, falkenstein, freegliders, iron kingdoms are some examples. In that sense the differential machine isn't a steampunk book. Add dieselpunk rpgs and books to that. The Secret History by Donna Tartt is considered quintessential dark academia. I get your point, but there's more to it than just visuals (and I can show the players some pics). They can picture it in their heads and listen to ambience music and rain/wind/thunder as well. It's about murder, college houses, gothic ambiences, moody atmospheres, secret societies, long corridors and hallways, libraries, perhaps a few ghosts, spells or vampires if players are into that.>>96747358same for solarpunk
>>96738951...thoughts on running a Frutiger Aero game?
>>96747562Jesus Christ, ask me how I know you're an ESL. It's "The Difference Engine," not the "differential machine." Go back to Pakistan. Also, just because something has cogs and steam doesn't make it steampunk. Steampunk is an aesthetic, same as dark academia; whereas cyberpunk or high fantasy are frameworks for storybuilding.
>>96754900>Steampunk is an aestheticHuh. I'd figure steampunk has been developed enough at this point to be able to be it's own framework, like its cousin cyberpunk.
>>96745337It's just an aesthetic. Think gothic architecture, librarians in tweed, early to mid 20th century boarding schools/universities, etc.
>>96751301What do you want out of it - Cyberpunk mechanics in a bright setting, or something more bespoke to the aesthetic's associated sensibilities?
