>>96743178I feel like they usually come up with a new gimmick for split cards each time right?I've been thinking that it would be cool to have split cards with the aftermath frame (perhaps with the bottom half mirrored to show that they're different) where the top half is any permanent and the bottom half is a non-permanent spell. Because I hate doubleface cards and I think it's simply a slightly different design space than something like channel.

>>96744482I keep saying that in spite of my inherent disgust with UB, I do at least respect that the avatar set has a whole bunch of those weird "two random animals fused together" creatures from the background lore of that franchise, since it means they can play well with all the tribal shit in bloomburrowbut then again what do I know, for all we know the TMNT set is gonna have a lot of payoffs for all the new york tribal shit in spiderman
>>96743873Nah, there is nothing wrong with locations, peoples or even entire planes of black, asian or whatever ethnicity of inhabitants. The problems are changing existing characters to a different ethnicity, having characters show up randomly as different ethnicities from places previously monoethnic, depicting real world analogue cultures as different ethnicities and, perhaps most prevalent, depicting certain ethnicities as superior beings which have no (relevant) flaws without it being a story beat.
>>96744532I haven't been paying attention to spoilers, but are there generic versions of those animals, or just the named legendaries?

>>96744535My problem is that it makes no sense for a village in Innistrad to support a diverse population like it's New York. It makes no sense. It would make sense for Ravnica, Ikoria or Kaladesh. The size of the whole Innistrad is the same as fucking Moldova, where are all these blacks coming from? Thraben would be the size of a small village and yet they have the population diversity of the biggest metropolis in the world with 500 years of constant migration. Insane. Devoid of any reason. How are there blacks in Ixalan?
>>96744945there's an Asian woman and a black guy in original ISD but the name of the card and the flavor text leads the reader to imagine that they might be strangers from a far-off land, of the type you might see in the old days of Balkan lands on the border of the Ottoman Empire. (does something like the Ottoman Empire exist in Innistrad, you ask? um, no, but I guess it's better than nothing.)two years later Wizards would release their first setting with a conspicuous Black™ population in the form of Theros two years later (excepting Mirage block for obvious reasons). when Innistrad was revisited three years after that, even the vampires had dark-as-midnight blacks among their ranks

>>96745226Like what? A battle you need to protect? That's just a planeswalker with no loyalty abilities.
>>96745254as much as all the UB trash disgusts me I think this was the set that finally broke me. I could tolerate the hat planes as stupid as they were for a while but seeing cheerleaders and TVs and not-ghostbusters in a supposedly in-universe fantasy setting that notably refuses to print any modern guns because it'd be too thematically incoherent just... I can't take it anymore, man.
>>96745299>That's just a planeswalker with no loyalty abilities.Even if it was just that, it's better than planeswalkers. But it could also be enchantments you could weaken and destroy through combat, or something that can repeatedly swap control between players, or essentially a rebound spell your opponent could interact with. There's plenty of possibilities, battles fix the main issues with planeswalkers and I hope they replace them completely.
>>96745333They fixed that by not having loyalty abilities and being shit so the game doesn't devolve into playing protect the castle.

You heard it a lot when LotR and FF dropped: "Well I actually think that this feels *more* like Magic than the latest Magic sets have!" Well yeah that's because they'd been making dogshit sets. Karlov Manor, Duskmourn, Aetherdrift and Thunder Junction, what a generational run of cringe. The only exceptions being Dragonstorm (it's fine but it was a rehash nostalgia set) and Edge of Eternities which actually has a decently thought out setting that applies the color wheel tropes to a space-based setting -- but OH WAIT it turns out that was just softening the blow for Star Trek and establishing Spacecraft and Station rules for it

>>96745180We know Bloomburrow and EOE both had Battles in development before scrapping them, I believe. I'm willing to bet Reality Fracture might have them.
>>96746460Pros:>Meta decks are very evenly matched (putting a lot of current decks under a generic "aggro" label does the format a disservice IMO)>Despite blatant MH powercreep it's still a format where guys who haven't played in years can show up with their old decks and be able to compete and do well even against the supposedly strongest decks in the format>It's still a fairly brewer friendly format, provided you know what you're doing at leastCons:>Having so much of the meta defined by MH sets ruins the "soul" of the format at least partially>Despite the meta being balanced by all objective metrics the truth is that the sheer powerlevel of the decks often leads to very swingy gamesThis last point in particular has been the most divisive among the modern players I know personally. Some dislike how the advantage can shift very wildly with only 2-3 good draws, others say that that type of high power play is exactly what the format should be about. Overall most people I know are generally happy about the state of the format, some more than others.
>>96746460>So like how's modern doing?as a combo player, it's good for me>mtgtop8 has 50% of the meta as agro.it's because mtgtop8 doesn't have a section for midrange, it's classifying all the blink decks as aggro which isn't very accurate
