What do you look for when buying dice? Coolness factor, edgyness, functionality? What's the coolest dice you own? The shittiest.
>>
>>96757582
I only buy Chessex. I have stacks of them. I want more. I just like dice.
>>
I remember playing a campaign with a guy once years ago who had these cool magnetic dice. Problem was that one game where the table we played on was made of metal.

Looks and price. I got an amazing deal for these dice. 5 whole sets in 5 different colors for 10 bucks.

>buy for functionality so you can toss them around, take them outside, etc without fear of financial damage
>sometimes buy for looks if you want something nice once in a while, use them at home or for special rolls if they are very delicate
Don't see why not, dice are used up quite frequently if you play a lot, especially with children or adults that act like children. Most of the "cool" dice I have are chinesium crap, but look flashy. I find it more interesting to have lots of different type of dice, especially if they are rare. Q-Workshop for example has sold a hit-location die for a multitude of years and it's a big chunky piece of plastic that you can impress someone with, or in an emergency use as an unsafe sex toy. Designs are cool and all but just having a die that does a weird calculation is a lot more fun.
>>
>>96757690
But I bought them 3 years ago.

I mostly like variety. Having many different dice so I always have something to match my mood.
Also from a practical standpoint, I prefer metal dice but I might not always have a dicetray to roll them. Means I need a good mix of metal and resin dice.

>>96757604
Chessex are honestly just always there for you, most reliable dice on the market if nothing fancy

>>96757860
Personally I'm usually hesitant on unconventional dice but when they're used well I do quite enjoy them, maybe I should look into them some more, see what's available :3

>Chessex are honestly just always there for you, most reliable dice on the market if nothing fancy

I got plenty of fancy ones incl confederate grey.

Some dipshit was trying to tell me they were unbalanced. I said well, all things being equal it doesn't matter because I only use them.

I like the dicelab multidice: instead of having to use a d4/d3 (hate these) or flip a coin, you just roll one of these.

Other color texts are acceptable, but they should contrast with the sides.

One of the guys in my group has a set of dice carved from mammoth ivory. No idea how much they cost him but I'm guessing it's a fuck load.
>>
>>96757582
Honestly I've reached the point where the rng basis of tabletop rpg games have turned me away altogether. I'd rather have a game with perfect information, where I know I WILL hit for THIS damage, even if I don't know enemy values. Hell even if it was mixed, like your lowest most basic attack action will always hit, and rules can be made for how that interacts with armor and shields and all that shit, but if you want to do something more complex, THEN you have to roll dice to see if it works.
I'm tired of watching both my character and others be turned into bumbling nincompoops by shitty dice rolls, in a game about being cool, competent adventurers, both in and out of combat.

Imagine if every time you went to take a piece in chess you had to roll dice. Does that sound like a way to make the game more fun, or does it sound like a way to make a 30 minute game take 4 hours?

>>96757657
>bottomless d4 that isn't a fucking caltrop
genius.
>>96758036
>confederate grey
depending on what year you bought them, those dice might have lasted longer than the confederacy itself. take good care of them.
>>
>>96757582
I just stick my hand in the big plastic container filled with dice in my LGS and grab whatever is there while throwing the money at the counter. I usually get a nice enough spread.
>>
>>96757582
Readability, readability, and readability.
A gap.
Then nice colours, proper clickity clack, and price in no particular order.
>>
>>96757582
I analyze the dice I buy by color, cut, and clarity; color as in colors I like, cut as in the number of sides, and clarity as in how visible the numbers or pips are.
The coolest dice I own are tied between a forest green set, and a dark blue set, both were gifts from good friends.
The shittiest? I own no shitty dice.
>>
>>96757582
Readability is the only thing that matters.
Custom dice are for faggots who collect junk, but don't play games.
>>
>>96757582
Readability on the table. I prefer opaque solid color dice with contrasting pips. I wish gamescience made bricks of D6s

Like so many anons before me, readability is the #1 consideration. Good random tumbling is another. When I'm running a game with the polyhedral set, I like to see that every value die is a different color. (Invariably, I will have a player that has a hard time finding the right die. Just being able to say "the blue one" moves the game along.)
I play a lot of d6 games. For that, I like backgammon precision dice, also known as tournament dice.
As far as the coolest die I own, a kid I knew made me a d8 out of a rock. I have no idea if it rolls well but it looks right. One cool gift.

My eyesight is rather poor. And my group plays in a place with some rather dark lighting so readability is an absolute must for me when I buy dice. Too many are dark colors with dark number or bright colors with bright numbers.
On a side note I really need someplace to store my dice rather than the little plastic boxes they come in and thought pic related would be rather cool to hang on my wall or something so my dice are not just packed away in a bag when not in use.

>What do you look for when buying dice?
That they're fun and thematic to something I am or want to be playing. Here are my Stars Without Number dice. Vaguely purple, swirly liquid glitter core, glittering dots all around, and sharp edges so that you know it's scifi. They hurt.

>>96757604
>I just like dice.
Likewise. They're cheap and take up little space. No harm in such a small collecting-hobby.
>>
>>96760400
It's a d12 (but not a dodecahedron). When you roll, you'll get one number on the top face and two on the top vertices. The top face is the result of a d3 roll, the number in the triangle is a d4 and the number in the circle is a d2.
>>
I like dice that are easy to read, sharp edged and a bit heavier than normal. I'd really like some sharp metal dice, but for safety reasons nobody is making them.
>>
>>96760755
It is a dodecahedron, it's just a rhombic one rather than a regular one.
>>
>>96760362
>>96760384
I play with Chessex dice but I'd like to get some Gamescience D6s as well is all I'm saying. Also I wouldn't buy those particular products because I like buying dice of a single color when I do so you can mix another color for a different pool. Also I prefer 12mm dice.

I bought three sets of dice off an online marketplace to use as loaners since I just started a campaign with no experienced players but then when I got them they were incredibly light and the numbers are painted on and turns out they're on Temu for half the price I paid.

I really love silver and want to cast dice out of melted (or at least heated and shaped on an anvil) silver, whether it's sterling, .999, or .900, all good to me. I've practiced on lead-free solder it wasn't the worst d6 ever made

300 is a nice pair of pants, cousin.
If it matters to you 300 is very reasonable for a very nice thing that'll last you.

>>96762258
For dice it's expensive, for car parts that's cheap.
The reason to have ivory dice is to have a novelty, not a better game piece. It really comes down to whether you think $300 is worth it for a conversation piece.

I have a big bowl of dice in my office/man cave. All dice are pretty much the same these days. Chessex, Kraken, Die Hard etc. Just cheap Chinese shit that's been tumbled and are uneven. I look for ones that are easy to read, look cool, and for d6s I generally prefer pips to numbers. I regret not buying game science dice when they were more available. After some sort of fire destroyed a lot of their equipment they're hard to find now.

Here's an elderly man explaining better than I can why most modern dice are so shitty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXZbdZNuRIw
>>
>>96757582
My main concern is weight. If I can't see where they rolled on the table, I don't trust them
>>
>>96762281
If it sparks joy and lasts a lifetime it was 300 well spent, but only if dice and having a nice set truly matters to you. If you hatdly touch dice in your spare time then yeah it's wasteful and always stupid if you don't have the liquidity.

>>
>>96762731
>>96763042
That's one of the most snake-oil salesman videos that's ever existed.

The guy is selling cheap dice that skip the tumbling process, not because it makes the dice "scientifically better", but because he's a cheap ass, as evidenced by him not even bothering to sand off the sprue burrs and customers having to do that themselves.

Thanks to the way the numbers are distributed, tumbled dice are more than random enough for any game applications. While some people prefer the look/feel of un-tumbled dice, please select those sorts of dice on the merit of their aesthetics and not because of the exaggerated sales pitch of a guy who also sold golf balls while claiming they were d100s.
>>
>>96757582
Post your dice!
Feel, rolling behavior and readability are my facets of taste, I dislike a d20 with edges that are either too round or too sharp.

Here are the dice I’ve been using as GM. Some chessex, some “official” wotc dice that had a deep discount because they’re made of shit plastic, and some stuff from cheap Chinese factories who sell on ebay. I have more but went with a vague color theme for my current dice bag.
>>
>>96757582
For me it's the readability. I want to be able to see and recognize the numbers more than a few inches away. If your font and art are arcane, sorry, your dice is not for me. Also I hate the dice with hollowed in numbers, their paint always gets chipped off and numbers become invisible.

Hell yeaaaaa' brother!

Picked up these suckers when I was 17, or 18, and have been using them since. I do have 2 sets of RPG dice, but right now I mostly play D6 miniature games so I've added in a handful of small D6 and a set of scatter dice instead.
