>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Billhooks: Fantasia, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics, Xenos Rampant...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

Warhost new dwarves reveal. I like them a lot, really looks like classic Tolkienesque dwarves instead of WoW dwarves

Is there a chance that mantic will give their old sculpts a digital stl send off?

I'm not sure if it's my favorite, compared to some of my malifaux crews, but I did enjoy painting them a lot more then I thought I would. And I'm rather proud I didn't butcher these infinity minis.
My all time favorite is probably my Ronin peasants buntai that I painted up in 15mm.
>>
>>96771501
Show the buntai and name the maker. I'm moving from 28-32mm to 10-15mm and as a continental it's tough to find something affordable. Sengoku-wise there's the new Heiho box from WGA but everybody complains about the spears so the quest keep going.

It's more HWG but I sometimes post HWG related stuff here instead due to the community being better.
They are by SMOL miniatures on MMF. You may be able to get them printed by MMFs printing services though.
It was a small game size, just to demo it basically so it's not many guys.

Halo flashpoint is tempting me

Anon...
>>
>>96772676

From what I heard mantic actually writes solid rules. Models are hit and miss, ones produced by archon in my experience are of decent quality.
>>
>>96772676
Good Rules, and good miniatures. I know nothing about halo and never played the video games but I had fun the 3 times I played the game in our local store.
I can see how this game is amazing to people who actually like the halo games and also like skirmish games.
The respawn and the collection of better weapons on the map is super fun.

they're fine. the last few years they've fallen in to the "keep relaunching to boost sales" spiral though, and that has ended well a grand total of zero times.
plus it's an IP game, which is usually a bad sign. if you want halo, you could always just print halo dudes at your desired scale, and it's generic enough that any damn scifi ruleset can handle it.

also tfw you think
>didn't spartan just do a halo ground game?
>oh, no that was like 15 years ago

Another preview interview for Starcraft came out where they higlighted the game flow, on event stage+preorder 23rd of October, with the alternate pose zeratul (cringe as it may be for Archon)
>hybrid activation
>3 phases per round - movement, shooting/charge and melee
>each phase is interchangeable activation
>the starting player for each phase is the one who finished previous one first (i guess start of movement is diceroll)
>1k/2k points, forced 60/40 field/reserve
>2/3 special cards per army that are either buildings or named strategies
>RPS balancing with extra dice if you hit vs what you're strong against
Personally I have some hope for the game but still bit cautious since it's Archon
>>
>>96772701
>I can see how this game is amazing to people who actually like the halo games and also like skirmish games.
The main concern I'd have is that Mantic have a ton of different systems and factions, and will often leave their systems (let alone factions) to languish for a year or more while they update some other faction from some other system. If you want to get into Flashpoint I hope you like all the stuff in it right now and won't get annoyed with no updates.

Cool, thanks. It sounds pretty cool, I'm tempted. I hope they throw a bone to SC1 boomers and don't just use SC2 designs, but I don't have much hope on that front.
>but still bit cautious since it's Archon
What else have they put out?
>>
>>96774284
Warzone Resurrection before the name change from Prodos (and whatever they had in their repertoire) and still apparently are shaky on goal fulfilments but maybe MS/blizz have them on a leash. Idk if they can scale the production assuming that the game catches (relatively speaking) so they'd start working on racial subfactions for unit and rules variety
>>
>>96774324
On the plus side, I feel like they're not overstretching their ambition in the same way Mantic does as mentioned earlier. It's just three factions, and within those factions it's a pretty limited range of the really iconic stuff but there's also room to expand the range if the game catches on.

What was the last game you played /awg/? I tried playing Xenos rampant with my son today, unfortunately his patience ran out after turn three, when more action started to happen, I suppose setting up the terrain and looking at the miniatures is still more exciting for him than measuring and rolling dice. I also need to buy some brown tablecloth for a better "table".
>>
>>96774409
Is your son like 5yo?
>>
>>96774431

Yeah, he'll be 6 next week. Can't expect him to play a full game of course, but he's expressed interest in my miniatures and often asks to play with them.
>>
>>96773462
Have you even read his letters to C.S. Lewis? They would have been big booty Asians.
>>96774409
I played Bolt Action with my son last week, it was actually kind of interesting. He had better units but I had more dice in the bag and I won with a single officer left. Even just pushing guys around and making shooty noises is a good gateway drug, if you can keep pushing it without being an overbearing dick then you've (literally)made a lifetime opponent.

What are the best non-coomer elf miniatures
>>
>>96775504
tl;dr there are no good elf miniatures.
See https://community.the-ninth-age.com/lexicon/lexicon/1026-fantasy-battles-miniature-library/
In plastic at best you get Oathmark ones.
Individual models in metal / resin ? Dark Sword probably, as always. Other GOOD sculptors too like Åšcibor.
>>
>>96775504
Oathmark or GW I guess. Elves occupy a strange niche. Extremely popular but with very few full sets in plastic.
>>
>>96775741
There are also Gamezone restic elves.
Though they are restic and the weapons are a bit too heroically scaled for my taste their poses are great and they form a nice looking units.
>>
>>96775504
>non-coomer
Just use historical kits and paint them a different scheme. They have helmets so you don't see the pointy ears, meaning it's now all about the colors and symbols.
>>
>>96776069
They have nothing elf-like in them. And you're suggesting they're the best. Have some standards, for goodness sake. I know faux-grogs play with literal pieces of shit and pretend it's good simply because it's cheap, but you don't have to stoop to that level.
>>
>>96776119
Meanwhile all elf figures from any manufacturer ever are just "human body and armor but maybe we show their ears. Or are Mantic.

The Warhost ones are elite.
Oathmark ones are incredibly generic and mid, but they're relatively cheap and "they work."
>>
>>96776365
The entire line is very mid.
>>
>>96776365
Oathmark elves are in a weird place than they are too fantasy to work for something else, while looking to borig for being elves.
>>
>>96776303
I don't think many would actually argue about the Ret elves. They are pretty kino, even for people that hate Warmachine.
>>
>>96775504
Previously mentioned Warp Miniatures have kind of like "soft coom" elf line. As in you can call the coomer miniatures if you are into pretty basic boobplate.Otherwise they are pretty decent. Though the line itself is a small one - spears, bows, cavalry, commander and some sphinx-cow monster.

Oathmark Orcs and Goblin ranges and the Goblin Warband from WGA remind me of a lot of the old art, the Goblin Warband being a dead ringer for some of Angus McBride's art.

Stargrave has a decent selection of genericish kits with a lot of bits and options.
Maelstrom's Edge has a nice scavenger type kit as well. Used to be cheaper but still a nice kit with lots of parts and iirc a bit unusual because it has a lot of extra legs compared to torsos.
EM4 has a bunch of cheap as chips plastic doods, they're okay looking or even good if you want a specific retro vibe.
Tehnolog Robogear is a weird 90s chunky russian warhammer knockoff with a lot of neat stuff too.

Thank you, Anons. Stargrave troopers and scavengers look good, however I feel like I might enjoy a more regular looking army with mostly identical gear instead. I will keep looking for now.
>>
>>96779741
>On another the shields suck
WGA sells 63 round shields in a box, Victrix also has several shield packs usually 48 to a box (56 for their heater shields but they're in 2 sizes), both in hard plastic. Fireforge also sells a bunch is smaller packs, but they're resin and embossed with designs on them. Pretty easy to replace them.

Troopers do have identical gear, Mercenaries and Scavengers don't.

Oh for sure its a minor gripe , it just stops this kit from being 10/10. Everyone has so many spare shields after a while you can just randomly slap them on terrain like it is a viking ship.
>>
>>96778565
Warp does print on demand. Most of their stuff is like this. So either you order it from them or get STLs and go to vodka guys. Look at what will be cheaper for you.
>>
>>96779153
Sadly even the skellies are a miss for me, them being all bones but still sporting the very same helmet. At this size and distance it had to be a skull for instant identification.
That plus switching from a one and done "host" box to a unit type box so we have to buy at least three boxes (infantry, archery, cavalry) to get a thematic warband. It was uncalled for and can only be explained by greed and anti-consumer policy.

It will forever live as a dramatic waste for me: the orc host is damn near perfect, but sadly I have nothing to oppose them to. The second and last host offer is the dwarves and they use tambourine for shield. Like, bro, someone should be fired for letting that shit slide through quality control.
>>
>>96779800
Oh fugg. You made me realize one could absolutely swap the human and undead shields if you or some friends were to buy those two specific kits. The human shields are squary and embossed, really evocative of the early Bronze Age. The undead on the other hand have round shield, the Revenant even having kind of Celtic circle motif on them. It makes total sense to swap their shields.

I might have found myself my Christmas present.
>>
>>96779725

Lovely helmets and for all models! Shields can be easily replaced and as many others pointed out, victrix and wga sell separate sprues of them.
>>
I really like Oathmark plastics, it is a great shame I don't really have it in me to start another 28mm mass battle scale system. I already have enough on my plate, and with minis this big I only really allow myself skirmish/warband size armies things if at all.
>>
>>96780027
A single box of 30 regular (not light or heavy) infantry is all you need for the minimum size game of 550pts, if that makes any difference. That gets you 29 soldiers and a captain.
>>
>>96779725
>>96779734

I bought the dwarf characters just to paint. I'll put them to my random assortment of DnD figures.
