Elf bros, help me figure this out. I think I've figured out an amazing hack.

OK so the Harlequins Combat Patrol comes with two Starweaver/Voidweaver kits. If you built one as the Voidweaver and one as the Starweaver, you'd have the two dynamic Harlequin bodies from the Starweaver left over.

But if you got a second Combat Patrol, and built another Voidweaever and another Starweaver, then you'd have four of the dynamic bodies from the Starweaver left over. And you'd have a spare Solitaire, which would be useless because you can only take one Solitaire in any size army.

Couldn't you simply take bits from the Harlequin Troupe sets, do some very light kitbashing on the four Starweaver bodies and the extra Solitaire, whip up some simple dynamic bases for them to match the regular Troupe bases, and then you would have a full 5 man Troup unit for free?

I don't really get the whole 'melee is the most effective against daemons' thing. I get that daemons are partially resistant to material weapons, and partially vulnerable to emotional damage, and because melee combat is so emotionally charged they take more damage from it...

But that in no way makes up for the fact that 3 out of 4 Chaos gods are melee specialists who would love nothing more than to close the distance with you so they can introduce you to their berserkers, plagues, and duelists. They might be resistant to material weapons but they're not immune and they'll still die if you shoot them enough, which is way safer and likelier to succeed than trying to 1 vs 1 a warp-empowered melee specialist in hand-to-hand combat.

We have been over this.
Melee and fire are effective against daemons because of mortal superstitious beliefs and because of the strength of faith behind them.

Unless augmented with holy countermeasures, ranged fire has little effect on daemons whose unstable nature causes energy and solid round munitions to veer off course, transfigure into harmless stuff, or do many random things.

In the Crusade Nachmund Gauntlet, a whole titan legio opened fire at a daemon horde and did almost no damage. Then the daemons' horde pulled the titans down and tore them to pieces. That's why daemons are the most dangerous of all threats on the battlefield. The rules they follow make a mockery of modern warfare. To fight them, you have to go down to their level, where you are exposed to their full horror.

Necrons and Tyranids circumvent this by using Null tech and the Shadow in the Warp to weaken the daemons before engaging them.

They can harm daemons because that is enough time for superstitious beliefs to develope.

Nope. Not according to the lore.
In the example I mentioned, the daemons charged laughing out of the nuclear fire of the Titans' attacks, shrugging firepower that would have reduced a hive city to ruins.

In the Shadowsun novel, a Great Unclean One casually tanked and laughed off a manta strike that could have sliced a warlord titan in half.

Eldar guns have existed for over 60 million years and they are more psychically active species than humans ever were.
Guns can harm daemons too.

>"To a Space Marine, the boltgun is far more than a weapon; it is an instrument of Mankind's divinity, the bringer of death to his foes. Its howling blast is a prayer to the gods of battle."
But ranged weapons don't have enough superstition or faith backing them up? I swear the people who commit this shit to paper don't stop for a second to think about it.

That's purely just because daemons move in unnatural, unpredictbale ways even when they are in real space, and when they are in real space they still aren't always 100% corporeal anyway.

It has nothing to do with "muh superstition, muh faith".

Sentience. The term sapience isn't used in fiction a lot.
It went from me "lying" to sources don't count? What a cunt you are assuming you are the same person.

Second, it's not contradictory. I remember reading about daemons being highly resistant to ranged years ago, too.
Anyway, I found the text from a few sources

>I punched my fist through the heart of a bloodletter and yanked it from its swelter-chest, then swung around to lance the tip of Gnosis through the neck of another, then crunched my elbow into the spine of a third before spinning to slam my glaive’s hilt into a fourth. I was lost in numerology by then, reaching into the near future, scrutinising everything as I moved, calm at the epicentre of the hurricane. Alcuin forged a path beside me, driving the Neverborn back and slicing them apart with psy-laced blows from his mighty daemonhammer. His troops stayed close, locking and swaying in concert, crying words of denunciation as they struck their blades home.

>The daemon was harmed by the weapons of eternity, this we knew. The heavy barrage of las-fire from the parapets, cutting through the blood-rain in boiling volleys, could slow or inconvenience them, but to kill a daemon one had to return to the primordial methods of fist and blade. They had been spawned from our oldest wars and our oldest hates, and we would never drag ourselves away from that primal genesis.

>>96791066
>he actually believes that the pulp and filler books are somehow important and matter
Grim.
>>
>>96791062
Wrong. Don't confuse the gamey rules with the fluff.
>>
>>96791072
>Combat reports of early encounters between the Legiones Astartes and the entities of the Warp reveal a peculiar facet of the nature of the Daemon. It has been noted that for some ill-known reason, Daemons appear to be all but immune to advanced projectile and energy based weaponry in their freshly manifested state. Attacks of a more primitive nature on the other hand, such as the hacking of a blade or the setting of flame to such a creature, have been reported to have an exaggerated effect.

>It has been posited by radical rhetoricians that those weapons wielded by ancient men are held most in dread by the Daemon itself, for as beings of scavenged sentience and emotion, they are not wounded on the physical plane but on an ideological level, by the primordial expectation of pain. Furthermore, the Daemons' vulnerability in this regard might have informed the very weapons with which we continue to wage war, for why else would the Emperor have commanded His Legions to wield swords as readily as their bolters in our current age?

So after digging through my many bits boxes I found that I do have 5 different apothecary sculpts. Now, the proper thing to do would be to fix them up as old gems like these deserve but an autistic idea has started to form in my head and I have to see it through, my creative boner demands it. A bit of a shame to cut up all this retro metal but I gotta do it.

Is it really that good? I mean is it? It's useless for the "special" chapters that have their own terminators and overall anything basic terminator is pretty bad anyway. You cam also get the non assault ones for cheap since they come in the starter set. I think it's a pretty shit box tbqh. Also Blood Angels had their own special termies removed from the store so they might get a new set ad well (at some point) making the vanilla assault ones useless for them as well.

You can, be the troupe sprue is a bit weirder than you think. Troupe can be run in 5, 6, 11 or 12 man bricks because each 6 man sprues has models to build one of them as the Troupe Master. So you will need the special weapons for the squad which they have a lot of and are neccessary. I recommend getting like 5 troupe kits from a recaster for the extra bits, because you will use them for years to come on all your eldar models and you will want the extra special weapons. I'd say just model them as Starweaver's because they are way better and actually help the Troupe a lot as transports.

Guns are just as primitive as melee weapons.
Vashtorr embodies technology and innovation, when somebody for the first time came up with the idea of a gun it would have manifested within the Warp. And since there is no concept of time within the Warp, the gun would have always existed within the Warp. Even before a person ever invented one.
Vashtorr is really just the God of Guns when you think about it.

I wouldnt take Shadowsun as representative of the Tau as a whole. She and Farsight are MAIN CHARACTERS trained by a montage master to actually have a brain as a contrast to how brainwashed and controlling Tau society is as a whole. We are meant to relate to her, and obviously having a deity that represents your ideology that actually can help fight Chaos would be on some level a good thing if you had a brain.

Shadowsun, Farsight, and Kais are described by Phil Kelly as the Primarchs of the T'au Empire in terms of their importance and impact on the T'au as a whole.
The reason why Aun'Va shipped Farsight away from the mainland was because Farsight's influence over the T'au was growing so great that it threatened the Ethereals'

Shadowsun has a lot of pull in the T'au Empire. As the grand commander of the Fire Caste, the Fire Caste is devoted to her.

Hybrid, they shield themselves in the webway from Slannesh but she still has a psychic soul drain on them they have to feed with torture. So they are very aware and and have machines that interact with the warp and soulstuff. They themselves aren't psykers out of neccessity, but they clearly inherited some of the Old Ones tech with the homonculus expert ability to shape flesh and make flesh constructs (old ones make entire species in their prime) and the ability to keep the webway from falling apart.

It's so silly that somebody from the 41st millennium would consider a longsword from the 1300's "ancient" but not a gun that came around only 600 years later. Because they worship the ctan as gods. but they are purely physical realspace beings. they took beings of infinite energy and hunger that werent psychic at all and gave them robot bodies. We have had the pre necrodermis Ctan described to us many many times in lore. They were gas bags, mini stars basically, with a rudimentary intelligence that travelled from star to star feeding off of its energy and raw materials. They were impossibly old, potentially as old as the universe itself. They then gave these barely sentient gas bags with infinite hunger necrodermis super brains, which in turn gave them true sentience and sapience. They used their new intelligence combined with their infinite power to invent all the necron super tech they use now and while doing so realized that SOULS were by far the most potent energy source in the galaxy, more than stars. They didnt have the tech the first time they fought the Old Ones which is why they got beaten down so hard. So the Ctan got super bodies made of living metal and skynet level super brains and used all this new found intelligence to maximize the amount of souls they could eat, which is why necrons cant become biological again even with all their knowledge: they have no souls. They are robot copies of the original Necrontyr who did have souls. They are all bad copies of the original people. Then the Ctan grew so powerful and hungry that they began devouring each other, which weakened them enough for the Necrons to rebel and take revenge on them for consuming their souls and entire species. If you cant see how this is both rooted in sci physical science AND culturally has religious important and meaning to the Necrons themselves I can't help you.

Secondly, rule of cool trumps all and they pushed Necrons into being Sci Fi tomb kings so they try to make them seem mystical to the Imperials.

Its not inconsistent. They have always been a physical real phenomenon that the Necrons have bodies too. If they were psychic they would have been something like the Enslavers.

The necron lore for Ctan is very straightforward and I have never read anything contradictory on it. They were a space animal they gave a necrodermis brain.

Necrodermis repairs itself and can be shaped by the necrons AI into any form that is necessary.

Shards of the ctan are pieces of their original necrodermis body that shapes itself into a tiny reflection of the great beings they once were. They contain a portion of the power, intelligence and hunger of the original being but are just that, a portion. Thats why ctan shards can merge if they are brought together.

I hate to leak the wiki here like a secondary but : https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Necrodermis

It was an indication that carnac doesn't understand anything and just parrots what he thinks is cool.
Guns have existed for millions of years in 40k, acting like daemons are resistant to them because guns aren't "ancient" enough, is very, very dumb.

It comes up later, with the Vulkan, who accuses Magnus of being too proud to take responsibility for his actions. He can't accept his wrong-doings as being his own fault, and he isn't happy not getting involved unless he can be silent as loudly as possible. He eventually sides with Tzeentch in order to claim that he never had a choice in the first place and therefore couldn't have made a mistake in the first place.

I should have said NTA. Anyway you're autistically extrapolating the broader point to a ridiculous degree. Generalities aren't unbreakable ironclad rules. "It usually snows in winter" does not mean "it only ever snows in winter". Guns are not useless against demons, just less effective than melee.

Also depends how big the demon is and how many lads with bayonets you have. Nurglings, paguebearers, bloodletters and the like could be fought off in melee with sufficient numbers. Bigger demons would need serious firepower or something more than guard. True faith can repel and weaken them, giving baseline humans another possibility to get the edge. All that to say it's not a blanket guns=useless and melee=overrun.

There's no way they're doing blood angels when the other army is world eaters
>>
>>96792889
You'd feel bad if I did, so I won't. I'm sparing your feelings anon. Thank me.
>>

Then the next Siege book implied that it wasn't real and it was all in Magnus' shattered brain.
>>
>>96792971
Yeah well fuck ADB and that hack bullshit, Fury of Magnus specifically has a scene with Malcador talking about the offer, without Magnus present. So its total bullshit that the whole thing was a figment of Magnus' imagination
>>
>>96792967
It's Black Templar and Dark Eldar again
>>
>>96792988
Then why does Vulkan, who was present in the Throne Room, say it didn't happen? Somebody got gaslighted.
>>
>>96793011
Well we know the Emperor takes over Vulkan in that scene, so I'm inclined to think he rewrote Vulkan's memories
>>
>>96793011
ADB wrote that scene years after. Its ADB retconning good lore as usual. He LITERALLY is one of those marine faggot who makes hating the subfactions he doesnt like his personality. He wants to ruin Tsons as much as possible.
>>
>>96793021
Its not even about the Thousand Sons. Its just to get back at people being upset with him for his dumbfuck bloodraven controversy.
>>
>>96792971
I don't think so? I thought it was stating that only part of Magnus was present for it, not that it didn't happen.
>>
My buddy wants me to get into war hammer which faction'll be the easiest to play as? I don't know how good they actually this is more just based on aesthetics. leaning on the nuns because the penitent machine looks badass.

Anyone not ultramarine still suffers somewhat from missing models

There are still a lot of missing firstborn replacement units, and some of the already existing primaris replacements are ass

>still no bike captain
>>
>>96793092
>bike captain
White scars have one and what do you need a bike captain for when you have bike chaplains
>>
>>96793067
Of those, Dark Angels will be the easiest to learn and play
Then Emperor's Children
Then a big gap and Sororitas
And then a massive gap and GSC. They are one of the most finicky, trick based armies in the game.

Knights are playing a different game from everyone else.
>>
approximately how many retail boxes (not models or units) does someone need to get to have a half-decent playable army?
>>
>>96793131
EC are very hard to play. That's why they are sitting at 38% win rate and also winning Tournaments.
>>
>>96793134
1-5

Part of the used Eldar lot I bought was an already built Wave Serpent. It had some problems I had to fix, a big one being that the back hatch didn't close properly because it had been built backwards. I had to cut it out and then glue it in place with plastic cement.

I really wanted to be able to keep the back openable so I could store little things inside :(
>>
>>96793134
11ish for a cheesy marine army with a lot of vehicles and characters

ah damn, I haven't kept up. I just remember that when they launched conventional wisdom was throw a lot of Flawless Blades at the problem and you'll do OK.

But that certainly answers that. If your options for your first army are Space Marines, three different very difficult to play armies, and Knights, go Marines.
>>
>>96793134
Varies wildly by the army. Some you can get the Combat Patrol three times, a couple other leaders and/or transport and/or tanks, and you're good to go.

I started the game with Genestealer Cults and I wouldn't really recommend it currently. It's difficult to paint the models and you need to paint a LOT of them compared to most other armies. It is also costly for that reason, and there really aren't any decent discount combo boxes available currently that covers your basic needs like the old combat patrol box did.
Gameplay is difficult as well, you sort of need to know what you're doing and since your guys are very weak as is you can't really afford to make any mistakes. But fuck that, just go for the faction and whether it clicks for you.
>>96793134
Depends but good boxes are disappearing. I grabbed two of the old GSC combat patrols and was able to play at 1000pts immediately, or at least until I put them together. I wish I had gotten a 3rd one sometimes.

Word of advice, pay no head to xenosfags like >>96793225, always start with space marines, never start with xenos. With space marines you'll have a well supported easy to paint, viable army of the most badass looking dudes in the setting, as xenos you won't get shit, have ugly ass outdated models for years and you rules will be in a constant state of flipping from being broken to being dog shit, not to mention all the xenos factions are boring as hell. Get marines and thank me later.

custodes are the definitive "easiest army" in every category: build, paint, AND play. it's even possible to do decently with. two boxes of jetbikes and two combat patrols gets you a fully functional 2000 point army
>>
>>96793354
Using the price hike prices for refreshed Terminators currently, it seems like it would be around a 31 percent discount if you round it at 240, which seems appropriate. Will definitely be looking to get these guys at a discount lmao.

Problem is that most of the big discount boxes are currently pretty ass

The whole point of them was that you could buy 2-3 combat patrols and you could build a playable army without wasting any models

Now they make it so you lose value if you get more than 1 its bullshit literally every army used to have better starting boxes, except for Chaos right now which strangely enough are the only exceptions at this moment
>>
>>96793105
I don't want a chaplain that is locked to a single load out

They have us the named bike captain why the fuck can't we get a generic one
Jump packs got one
Terminators got one
Phobos got one
Gravis got one

Either that or bring sergeant chronus back so I can have a tank commander
Bring tau tank commanders back wtf
