That's why you drop the LRM 15 to a 10 and max the armor. Two AC20 SS is enough to kill ANY cockpit in the game, use the large laser to probe and the AC20's to blow out the cockpit. If you need salvage you can kneecap assaults before they can react.

It's not Smart AI or "real" AI, but they got pretty close. Herb in his weirdo crusade to give to the Blakist Remnants ALL THE TOYS gave them a functional "dumb" AI, and what we see is simply the prototype for a much larger system.
Of course the Blakists fucked off beyond Davion space so we'll never see them again, but dumb AI are completely possible in the BTech universe.

"Potentially" is doing a LOT of heavy lifting here. Actual fatalities in Trials of Position appear to be pretty damn rare, AND the many of warriors in the TOPs are "warriors" who are aging out anyway. We have blow by blows of several love fire TOPs in all the novels, and there's very few fatalities among the opfor. IIRC, none of the warriors faced by Aidan, Marthe, Phelan, or Natasha died in their Trial. I don't <think> Alaric or Katrina killed anyone, and while I'm 100% sure that CrazyTits Hazen did she was also a confirmed psychopath and tried to kill basically anyone who she could fuck regardless of situation, so I feel she's an outlier to be discarded.

You don't have to kill the enemy, remember. You have to defeat them. Blowing out the legs or torso of a Mech, or critting out it's engine or gyro, all qualify. There's lots of ways to kill a Mech without the pilot dying in the bargain. This isn't the vidya where killing the Mech also automatically kills the driver.

I temember Alaric's trial well. He pounded a Cougar or Adder into scrap as his first kill and already aimed at the Mad Dog that would be his second, and fired as soon as the first mech's still living pilot deactivated its targeting system, thus signaling combat ineffective.

The Mad Dog then instantly ate an ERPPC to the canopy.

Alaric's final kill was his sibmate who tried to murk him from behind. Also dead. Then Alaric switched off his own targeting before his final opponent, a Jupiter, could cut his carreer short.

So yeah, deaths in the TOPs are accepted, but by no means obligatory. You have to render your opponent ineffective, and either side can signal surrender and count as kill.

1 billion is pretty reasonable BTW. The Exodus Fleet was 6 million, and over 270 years that cones out to slightly before 2%. Considering the Pentagon Civil War and that many Clan worlds are barely habitable, it's not bad. It would be about 50th on the world by modern standards, way above every developed country. Lots life expectancy seems to be offset by fairly large families.

It's a jealousy and ego thing. iirc, the "tradition" started when a well liked officer got a sword from his boys because they thought it would be cool to get him a sword. They hand spent so long in their crazy corner that the idea of civilian populations resisting at all was completely foreign to them. The idea that the remnants of a planetary militia would continue a guerilla war also blind sided them. They expected it to be as simple as defeating the planet's garrison of mechs in single combat, announcing it was now their property and everyone would just go along with it. Like there was the legitimate expectation that they could leave a planet a week after conquering it and if anyone else showed up the people living there would proudly resist for the honor of their new masters.

Obviously this idea went out the window a few weeks into the invasion but that was what they expected when planning it. If things had actually gone that well I don't think the Clans were actually too far off the mark as far as the straight out fights with Spheroid powers goes. Even if they only sent a thousand warriors each, how many planets were going to be defended by more than a company of mechs and how many would have even less than that? How many of those mechs have shitty 5/6 pilots? How many of those mechs are shitboxes like the Assassin that would stand zero chance against any Omnimech?

The Clans were sending their best and that means shit like 1/2 pilots with EI tattoos sitting in the cockpit of a Warhawk. If that lands on your planet and you have a lance of bug mechs with a Shadow Hawk as the leader then the rest of that Star may as well stay in orbit because they won't be doing much.

Clanners drank the cool-aid hard and truly believed their society was objectively better than the rest. They see professional soldiers as a sort of primitive form of Warrior, militias as grossly misguided (at best), and mercenaries as a fancy kind of pirate. So their view of it is that wherever they took over, the professional soldiers would be bondsman'd and see the error of their ways, the militias would fuck off back to the civilian caste and stay there (or maybe try to trial back into the warrior caste if they really are worth anything) and the pirates would just die or be bondsman'd. They weren't expecting patriotism or what they viewed as civilians to take up arms after being shown the "better way".

Really depends on the era. When the clans showed up mercenaries were mostly seen positively and did keep themselves in check (mostly, there was some scummy moves around the ronin war), but in harsher eras the mercenaries throw off the mask real quick and go back to only working for the highest bidder for as long as their bid remains high. The Jihad especially had a lot of nasty mercenary moves.

I have two big problems with Gothic, neither of which is with the general concept.

The first is that it'll absolutely be sucking resources away from the game proper.

The second is that because they started it "as a joke" before saying that they'd keep going with it, the basis was laid haphazardly. And that's fine for a one-off, but if they start building on it, they're going to quickly get to the point when nothing makes sense because they started on a weak foundation.

In Gothic lasers can be set to "dazzle mode" which does half heat and half damage against normal targets but full damage against abominations, so it's not as bad as it sounds. Of course, massed MLs only get better under such conditions and are still much better than any variety of Blazer, but it's not as bad as it would be without that option.

That's something I'm not sure about with Gothic, they've mentioned other mechs like Jenners and Grasshoppers, and according to this scenario you can use the MUL for everything except abominations. The madmaxtech situation seems to be worse than canon if anything, with manufacturers that were fine in 301X now being fucked and the remaining manufacturing being even slower, but there's no depictions of vehicles or non-gothic mechs. It's not clear if the gothicized mechs are just extra pompous because they're even rarer and the societies running them are more ostentatious or if they've always looked like that. We don't know if a star league vintage Phoenix Hawk pulled from a cache looks extra greebled or not.

Over the last couple of months I have been painting my take on the Canopian Highlanders because the idea of a periphery power sponsoring a merc company as a way of gaining intel on what has been happening in the inner sphere is really evocative to me.
