>Sup /tg/It's been a fucking long time since there has been one of these, but I think they provide a useful service to the board./yourdudes/ is a vital element of tabletop, but in recent years it has felt out-of-place in the bulk of the other threads on the board. Rather than shitting up the threads of others, why not discuss your imaginary warbands with other like-minded autists? What is /ydg/?>A place to share your custom/homebrew factions/warbands/armies from any wargame or TTG>A place build on their lore, stories and what makes them cool>A place for modeling ideas, colour schemes, and any ideas, critiques, or suggestions>General writefaggotry is also accepted as long as it's /ydg/ related40K faction creation tableshttps://1d6chan.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:Creation_Tables/tg/ Homebrews:https://1d6chan.miraheze.org/wiki//tg/_40,000Chapter Name Generator:http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/liber/CantinaChapterCreator.htmlSpace Marine Painter:http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/smpbeta.phpChapter Generator:https://bitbucket.org/chaptergenerator/chaptergenerator/downloads/Click the "Russian" icon when the program is opened to change to English. Now updated with Astra Militarum and Imperial Guards!Bonus points for any anons brave enough to share models, warband outlines, army lists, stories, etc. etc.
>>96795865As is tradition, I'll start things off with a 40k warband I'm just starting after a long break from the hobby:>NameThe Sky Killaz>AliasesKazza's Boys, 'Dem Gitz', Flashas>ColorsBlack and Yellow (you know what it is), white accents>Key UnitsDakka Jets, Bombas, Warkoptas, Burna Boys / Flash Gitz, Kommandos>SummaryLed by thier geriatric Warboss, a 'retired' Bad Moon flyboy who goes by Kazza "Kommanda" Skykilla, the warband has found a profitable ecological niche in the skies of Armageddon, trolling about in their Kill Krooza 'Night Krawla' causing mischief.Kommanda Kazz, to his credit, is a very old ork who has managed to develop a scary amount of sense in the years since he arrived as part of Ghazghkull's first Waaaaagh. In doing so, he's developed what he calls "Da Two Tricks":>First Trick: Fly over an Ork warband and extort them for all the teef they have in exchange for providing them with air and vehicle support (and blow em to hell if they say no!)>Second Trick: While the Kontrollas (think Ork JTACs) are allowed free access to the client's warband, they take careful notes of all the good shit, then after the job's done and the teef are paid up call in Kommandos to steal everything not bolted down and rob said client blindIn an act of impeccable diplomacy (by Ork standards), Boss Kazza has managed to consistently weasel his way out of blame for this banditry every time so far, and is mostly seen as a funny old git who shares campfire stories about "The old dayz wot wen ladz had real mettle".For the Imperials, the Sky Killaz are a gigantic pain in the ass because they tend to provide formidable air superiority at random times and in seemingly random places across the planet, throwing wrenches in many a plan.
How do you handle/yourdudes/ when it comes to major events? For me I have everything isolated out in the Far Eastern Fringe
>>96796339That's a great question!Ultimately I think the important parts are:>Make sure it makes sense for your dudes to fight anyone they'd logically be going up against>Make sure your dudes have a good reason not to have been mentioned in the standing lore>Give your dudes an elevator pitch of a concept (My dudes from the Killteam group I've been in for 4 years or so for instance, is: 'Alpha Legion guys who busted their Lord out of prison but now can't find their old warband')>Use lore to justify the stuff you think is fun to model or plahAnd finally, perhaps most importantly:>If your dudes ever interact with big events or major characters, they have to be out of focusI always find it so lame when a homie has a neat character or band only for them to be best friends with Trazyn or Khârn or something. That always devolves into comic book fanfiction stuff in my experience.
>>96796339One nice thing about settings as huge as 40k or Star Wars or what have you is that you can absolutely have your dudes be at a battle but have contributed fuck all, or otherwise not be remembered. There was a fun bit I can't remember from where with a gaggle of World Eaters all reminiscing about the Siege of Terra only for it to be revealed that not a single one of them had been there. They all just wanted the Bona Fides of being a veteran of the Long War.Where it can be really fun to have /your dudes/ be off in the fringes is if you have friends who also build out factions for that region. Then you end up having a collaborative little setting for your games that can be super fun.
Im just finishing a major move in and building an office but once im done I plan on doing an incredibly kitbash heavy guard regiment>NameThe Atlantinn 7th>ColorsCan't go wrong with rusty grey, marine blue and golden trim>BitsMostly breachers, auxilia and IDK>Key unitsButtloads of sentinels and cavalry. Also using ogryn rules for a special unit I made for my regiment meant to be a high depth diving suit>SummaryThey come from the ocean world of Atlantinn, the planet's economy is structured around big underwater hives with the lowermost levels being at abyssal depth mining extremely precious metals and industrial materials many of which are key for the imperium's armies in the entire sector, many of the citizens of the underhive grow overly boney with pale and unhealthy skin alongside serrated teeth for eating out fish rations while the nobles enjoy noble feasts with enormous halls built around reefs vibrating with life. The citizens have extremely family like relationships with the native fauna and often times talk to octopuses or fish as kin, the inquisition is unsure as to the sentience of these little sea critters but they're pretty confidently leaning towards just an advanced intelligence. The Atlantinns love their fish so much they enhance them with all sorts of trinkets to be able to ride or bring them on land and decorate their artillery pieces with cute little starfish and shark teeth markings. They have high tech pressure suits for underwater mining and are known to enlist in grand hunts for massive underwater titans where the winner gets spoils, a meaningless title and most importantly gets to keep all the food!>>96796339>"Hey uhhh we have an ork waaagh on the ocean world Saltious VII">"Oh I know send in the water guys">"The dark krakens?">"The more expandable water guys"Due to their hyper specializatiom in their field they get to be the "water guys" for ocean world warfare. Also make for very good naval breachers in close quarters
Fuck it I'll contribute my wip.>NameCraftworld Vaelios>Colors/StyleOlive Drab with Grey bits. They have a sort of Cosair style to them from living rough for so long>Key UnitsGuardian Squads, Rangers, Wraithbone Constructs>SummaryTheir Craftworld was wrecked on a jungle world during the fall and have spent that time trying to unfuck their situation as it gets harder and harder to hide their location from others.A lot of the Craftworld was repurposed into a giant fortress or shaped into massive wraithbone siege engines and its not 100% if it can even be fixed and void worthy again. They have a sort of cultural divide as some want to focus on getting back to the stars and some that accept the new reality and want to form a small pocket empire. Most of the Aspect Warriors and shrines are gone from attrition over time and their only consistent path in great numbers is Outcasts as many become disillusioned and just leave the Craftworld all together. All this population loss leads to them doing less savory things to secure fresh people for the Craftworld, which in turn has left them with very little good will with other Craftworlds.
Who's THE BIG NAMED GUY from /yourdudes/' army?
Are they still /yourdudes/ if they're barely a subfaction in an existing one?
>>96796659I know how it is anon. IRL loves to get in the way. I love your guard though, reminds me of those little blurbs that used to be in the back of guard codexes back in 3rd and such. Those always were so cool.>>96797099This is like After Earth if After Earth didn't suck. Good job!>>96799033I'll share mine!>Da BarunOne of Skykilla's most favored underbosses, he has a bizarre fetish for Imperial Militaria and has consolidated a solid reputation for himself as a brilliant strategist, brooding around the Krooza like Batman and Rommel had a love child. In reality, although he genuinely has innovated some incredible leaps in 'air cav' type tactics using WarKoptas and huge innovations in close air support tactics ("Only bomb da humies!"), he lacks even a basic grasp of strategy.Despite this, his choice of attire and confidence in his own brilliance has landed him command of several kopta skwadrons, the warband's kommandos, and worst of all their storm boys.In effect this has resulted in his chunk of the operation being composed solely of very lethal autists. And he wouldn't have it any other way.>>96799228This may be controversial, but I say yes.I ran my dudes in an old KillTeam league as The Faithless (the Alpha Legion warband from Vraks) and felt no less connected to them than if they'd been my own original group. It's not like there was much lore to tip toe around for them so it wasn't limiting in the least.
Is it /yourdudes/ to flesh in a faction that is alluded to in the material but has no color scheme, known troops pictured, stated presence in current lore, or much else besides some tidbits to theme with?
>>96799228>>96799401Didn't see the very similar question above, soz.

Showing my age a little, but curious about something on a meta level.Have you guys found that newer players are less and less interested and invested in their dudes? It's anecdotal, but I've been farting around with wargames for over a decade now and even over the past 3 years I've seen fewer and fewer players at my FLGS even bothering with campaigns or narrative at all. If we're lucky you'll get someone who will rant about how sick Kriegers are or some such - IE "my craftworld / regiment / chapter / legion is best" - but almost nome name their heroes or have any made up history. When I first got into 40k, for example, my friends and I went out of our way NOT to include named heroes just so that our little plastic badasses could feel like their stories and rivalries weren't footnotes. Now I see lots of players who see their unnamed HQs as unit upgrades and little else.Curious what you've seen in your experiences. Is it just me? My FLGS? I genuinely can't tell.
>>96801118a consequence of 40K moving into a more competitive space and tournament play taking center stagethere's no space to make "your dudes" if what you're creating has no narrative cohesion but rather is simply what the faction's meta demands
>>96801118I believe it's because these players don't see 40k as something with one foot in TTRPG's and the other in wargaming; it's way more of a competitive thing. Most of the newer players at my LGS tend to ask for the best armies, best units, etc. and don't care all that much for lore.
>>96801118Crusade stuff in 10th Edition also just kind of sucks, which doesn't help.
>>96801391No lie, I have a younger guy (in his 20s) in my Mordheim group who I started playing the odd game with. Over the course of two years he has run:>Knights>Custodes>Chaos Knights>Death Watch>EldarEach time he started a new faction he (to his credit) painted up a nice army and proceeded to talk about how cool they were, but then as soon as he reads one too many articles or reddit posts about some other army that was S tier he'd sell everything to the game store and buys up whatever that next 'better' in his head is.He's by no means a 'comp player', but he treats casual games exactly like that.I can't imagine spending hours and hours building and painting an army without giving at least a little bit of a shit about them.
