>>96795865As is tradition, I'll start things off with a 40k warband I'm just starting after a long break from the hobby:>NameThe Sky Killaz>AliasesKazza's Boys, 'Dem Gitz', Flashas>ColorsBlack and Yellow (you know what it is), white accents>Key UnitsDakka Jets, Bombas, Warkoptas, Burna Boys / Flash Gitz, Kommandos>SummaryLed by thier geriatric Warboss, a 'retired' Bad Moon flyboy who goes by Kazza "Kommanda" Skykilla, the warband has found a profitable ecological niche in the skies of Armageddon, trolling about in their Kill Krooza 'Night Krawla' causing mischief.Kommanda Kazz, to his credit, is a very old ork who has managed to develop a scary amount of sense in the years since he arrived as part of Ghazghkull's first Waaaaagh. In doing so, he's developed what he calls "Da Two Tricks":>First Trick: Fly over an Ork warband and extort them for all the teef they have in exchange for providing them with air and vehicle support (and blow em to hell if they say no!)>Second Trick: While the Kontrollas (think Ork JTACs) are allowed free access to the client's warband, they take careful notes of all the good shit, then after the job's done and the teef are paid up call in Kommandos to steal everything not bolted down and rob said client blindIn an act of impeccable diplomacy (by Ork standards), Boss Kazza has managed to consistently weasel his way out of blame for this banditry every time so far, and is mostly seen as a funny old git who shares campfire stories about "The old dayz wot wen ladz had real mettle".For the Imperials, the Sky Killaz are a gigantic pain in the ass because they tend to provide formidable air superiority at random times and in seemingly random places across the planet, throwing wrenches in many a plan.
How do you handle/yourdudes/ when it comes to major events? For me I have everything isolated out in the Far Eastern Fringe
>>96796339That's a great question!Ultimately I think the important parts are:>Make sure it makes sense for your dudes to fight anyone they'd logically be going up against>Make sure your dudes have a good reason not to have been mentioned in the standing lore>Give your dudes an elevator pitch of a concept (My dudes from the Killteam group I've been in for 4 years or so for instance, is: 'Alpha Legion guys who busted their Lord out of prison but now can't find their old warband')>Use lore to justify the stuff you think is fun to model or plahAnd finally, perhaps most importantly:>If your dudes ever interact with big events or major characters, they have to be out of focusI always find it so lame when a homie has a neat character or band only for them to be best friends with Trazyn or Khârn or something. That always devolves into comic book fanfiction stuff in my experience.
>>96796339One nice thing about settings as huge as 40k or Star Wars or what have you is that you can absolutely have your dudes be at a battle but have contributed fuck all, or otherwise not be remembered. There was a fun bit I can't remember from where with a gaggle of World Eaters all reminiscing about the Siege of Terra only for it to be revealed that not a single one of them had been there. They all just wanted the Bona Fides of being a veteran of the Long War.Where it can be really fun to have /your dudes/ be off in the fringes is if you have friends who also build out factions for that region. Then you end up having a collaborative little setting for your games that can be super fun.
Im just finishing a major move in and building an office but once im done I plan on doing an incredibly kitbash heavy guard regiment>NameThe Atlantinn 7th>ColorsCan't go wrong with rusty grey, marine blue and golden trim>BitsMostly breachers, auxilia and IDK>Key unitsButtloads of sentinels and cavalry. Also using ogryn rules for a special unit I made for my regiment meant to be a high depth diving suit>SummaryThey come from the ocean world of Atlantinn, the planet's economy is structured around big underwater hives with the lowermost levels being at abyssal depth mining extremely precious metals and industrial materials many of which are key for the imperium's armies in the entire sector, many of the citizens of the underhive grow overly boney with pale and unhealthy skin alongside serrated teeth for eating out fish rations while the nobles enjoy noble feasts with enormous halls built around reefs vibrating with life. The citizens have extremely family like relationships with the native fauna and often times talk to octopuses or fish as kin, the inquisition is unsure as to the sentience of these little sea critters but they're pretty confidently leaning towards just an advanced intelligence. The Atlantinns love their fish so much they enhance them with all sorts of trinkets to be able to ride or bring them on land and decorate their artillery pieces with cute little starfish and shark teeth markings. They have high tech pressure suits for underwater mining and are known to enlist in grand hunts for massive underwater titans where the winner gets spoils, a meaningless title and most importantly gets to keep all the food!>>96796339>"Hey uhhh we have an ork waaagh on the ocean world Saltious VII">"Oh I know send in the water guys">"The dark krakens?">"The more expandable water guys"Due to their hyper specializatiom in their field they get to be the "water guys" for ocean world warfare. Fuck it I'll contribute my wip.>NameCraftworld Vaelios>Colors/StyleOlive Drab with Grey bits. They have a sort of Cosair style to them from living rough for so long>Key UnitsGuardian Squads, Rangers, Wraithbone Constructs>SummaryTheir Craftworld was wrecked on a jungle world during the fall and have spent that time trying to unfuck their situation as it gets harder and harder to hide their location from others.A lot of the Craftworld was repurposed into a giant fortress or shaped into massive wraithbone siege engines and its not 100% if it can even be fixed and void worthy again. They have a sort of cultural divide as some want to focus on getting back to the stars and some that accept the new reality and want to form a small pocket empire. Most of the Aspect Warriors and shrines are gone from attrition over time and their only consistent path in great numbers is Outcasts as many become disillusioned and just leave the Craftworld all together. All this population loss leads to them doing less savory things to secure fresh people for the Craftworld, which in turn has left them with very little good will with other Craftworlds.
Who's THE BIG NAMED GUY from /yourdudes/' army?
Are they still /yourdudes/ if they're barely a subfaction in an existing one?
>>96796659I know how it is anon. IRL loves to get in the way. I love your guard though, reminds me of those little blurbs that used to be in the back of guard codexes back in 3rd and such. Those always were so cool.>>96797099This is like After Earth if After Earth didn't suck. Good job!>>96799033I'll share mine!>Da BarunOne of Skykilla's most favored underbosses, he has a bizarre fetish for Imperial Militaria and has consolidated a solid reputation for himself as a brilliant strategist, brooding around the Krooza like Batman and Rommel had a love child. In reality, although he genuinely has innovated some incredible leaps in 'air cav' type tactics using WarKoptas and huge innovations in close air support tactics ("Only bomb da humies!"), he lacks even a basic grasp of strategy.Despite this, his choice of attire and confidence in his own brilliance has landed him command of several kopta skwadrons, the warband's kommandos, and worst of all their storm boys.In effect this has resulted in his chunk of the operation being composed solely of very lethal autists. And he wouldn't have it any other way.>>96799228This may be controversial, but I say yes.I ran my dudes in an old KillTeam league as The Faithless (the Alpha Legion warband from Vraks) and felt no less connected to them than if they'd been my own original group. It's not like there was much lore to tip toe around for them so it wasn't limiting in the least.
Is it /yourdudes/ to flesh in a faction that is alluded to in the material but has no color scheme, known troops pictured, stated presence in current lore, or much else besides some tidbits to theme with?

Showing my age a little, but curious about something on a meta level.Have you guys found that newer players are less and less interested and invested in their dudes? It's anecdotal, but I've been farting around with wargames for over a decade now and even over the past 3 years I've seen fewer and fewer players at my FLGS even bothering with campaigns or narrative at all. If we're lucky you'll get someone who will rant about how sick Kriegers are or some such - IE "my craftworld / regiment / chapter / legion is best" - but almost nome name their heroes or have any made up history. When I first got into 40k, for example, my friends and I went out of our way NOT to include named heroes just so that our little plastic badasses could feel like their stories and rivalries weren't footnotes. Now I see lots of players who see their unnamed HQs as unit upgrades and little else.Curious what you've seen in your experiences. Is it just me? My FLGS? I genuinely can't tell.
>>96801118a consequence of 40K moving into a more competitive space and tournament play taking center stagethere's no space to make "your dudes" if what you're creating has no narrative cohesion but rather is simply what the faction's meta demands
>>96801118I believe it's because these players don't see 40k as something with one foot in TTRPG's and the other in wargaming; it's way more of a competitive thing. Most of the newer players at my LGS tend to ask for the best armies, best units, etc. and don't care all that much for lore.
>>96801118Crusade stuff in 10th Edition also just kind of sucks, which doesn't help.
>>96801391No lie, I have a younger guy (in his 20s) in my Mordheim group who I started playing the odd game with. Over the course of two years he has run:>Knights>Custodes>Chaos Knights>Death Watch>EldarEach time he started a new faction he (to his credit) painted up a nice army and proceeded to talk about how cool they were, but then as soon as he reads one too many articles or reddit posts about some other army that was S tier he'd sell everything to the game store and buys up whatever that next 'better' in his head is.He's by no means a 'comp player', but he treats casual games exactly like that.I can't imagine spending hours and hours building and painting an army without giving at least a little bit of a shit about them.
>>96803487People at my LGS just use netlists in crusade so it's pointless.
>>96804345That sounds boring, nobody even tries to do funny things either? There's a new LGS in my area and nobody across as being WAAC so far, which is nice, but most are generally working on their models.
>>96804378I think it's just how my LGS turned out. Years ago we had a pretty big mix of players but now it's skewed heavily towards competitive play. Tons of leagues and ITC tournaments. I just stopped playing 10th because the amount of investment I'd have to put into my army to make it viable for this style of play made it all feel pointless.
>>96804384I don't blame you anon that sounds like AIDS
>>96804384I don't mind having updates in some capacity, but juggling and bookkeeping every three months is absolutely going to get on the nerves of players and cause burnout if they're not hyperfixated. Did the less serious players in your LGS at least try to look into a new game or older edition?
>>96804664As far as I can tell they've moved on, but this was a few editions ago. My closer friends who used to play there just don't play there anymore. The owner used to be a massive 40k fan but has since moved on to historicals.
>>96804664NTA but the /grog/ threads on here make me wonder if it's a viable way to provide a haven for narrative players. Like right now at my FLGS those people (myself included) mostly stick to Frostgrave / Stargrave but I'd love to see if older editions had any appeal.Just for one example - I wanted to kitbash a Big Trakk with Skorcha as some sort of looted wagon so badly when I was young, but I was poor and bad at modeling. Now that I'm neither of those I'd love to make one, but it sucks that the unit basically doesn't exist now.I'm guessing there are a lot of people with similar gripes, right?

>>96804938>Black & YellowBasedI agree that they sound propa goffey. Almost have an Iron Warriors vibe given the color scheme!
OP here. Do you include homages / outside influences when making your dudes? My Sky Killaz for example were born almost entirely from a daydream of 'Highfleet but Orks'
>>96804938Rolled up a Warboss to represent the Lejundery Ork. I decided to choose some stuff instead of rolling to make him fit more for the klan.>'Ow old is da Boss?Prime: (31-50 Years Old) >'Ow BIG is da boss?Average Ork (6'1" - 7' Tall) [Chosen]>Does da boss follow Gork or Mork?Gork AND Mork!>Wot sorta ork was da boss before 'e wos da boss? >>96805723So I chose "Average Boy" size to represent the "Dey ain't Big, but dey get da job done" result previously, "Mekboy" and "Da Armoured WAAAGH!wagon" was chosen because it makes sense for a tank cyborg klan, and "Ovva Orks", "Dem 'umies", and "Loyal" to match the other rolls. Some things rolled naturally to match up, such as "Da Straight-Talka" matching well with "Dey fight too seriously". The "Boom-Dakka Cannon" and "Zappy Dakka 'n' Blasters" sounds like orky tank equipment, like the Kannon and Zzap Guns you'd find on battlewagons.I also rolled up a name on the old name generator from the 2e books; Grimslag. Made his name with the old ork writing system and some glyph stuff for a banner/tank marking.2/2>>96805574>Almost have an Iron Warriors vibe Especially with all the tanks and kannons, yeah.
>>96801118I think it's just the general direction GW has taken with doing everything in their power to try and halt customization. Many newer players simply see 40k as an estabilished setting and not a sandbox, for them it's way easier and less risky to pick an estabilished subfaction or paint in the box's color scheme over attempting anything of their own. GW's hyper focused attitude on named characters and the secondary community's obsession with primarchs and loretubers doesn't help either. This is not an attitude about exclusivly /yourdudes/ but also kitbashes and homebrewing, people seem to care a lot more about official stuff now
>>96796339Participate in passing or if I don't like the event I have them gone and move back when its over so I can ignore it. For example, my battletech mercs.>Present throughout the succession wars and clan invasion and formation of the second star league>Became disgusted with the inner sphere after the collapse of the second star league and left for the periphery during the fedcom civil war so I could skip the Word of Blake Jihad and Republic of the Sphere>Got rekt by the Scorpion Empire and survivors fled back to the inner sphere now that the lore I hate is over and are carrying out war crimes on Jade Falcons as vengeance for their war crimesAs far as participating in directly, most I've done is said they joined the SLDF during the second star league because they were a former SLDF regiment. For another question how do you handle your dudes throughout different eras? Do you simply have lore to the point you play in and model them for that or do you have differing paint schemes and equipment? For my own I've made three different armies.>2nd Royal Hussar RegimentBefore and during the first succession war, advanced mechs for that war, drab green paint scheme of the SLDF.>Death's Head HussarsRenamed and repainted after the first succession war, a wide array of mechs made to cover about 250 years of history>Death AddersAfter getting smashed by the Scorpions about a company was left under the command of an officer who larped as a clanner because his granny was a Star Adders officer captured during a raid into the Hanseatic League. New paint scheme and a mix of clan and sphere mechs.
>>96807857As an Orkfag encountering the newbies who scoff at even kitbashing makes me very sad.Like I've seen dudes in their 20s who get confused and talk shit when an assembly doesn't match the box.
>>96795865I haven't played in a while, and probably won't. I just don't have the time any more, but I do have a bunch of Mydudes.Spess marins:Primaris Chapter, Dark Red mostly, Silver Gauntlets and boots. Born out of a compromise between Mechanicus and Administratum over a old, old munitions plant. Planetary gov and crew know how to maintain it, but the mechanicus wants it. About to fight, negotiations happen of 'put space marines here, they 'own and protect it' and the Mechanicus gets Techmarines in there to look after it. Governor happy because now he's got a chapter of marines to protect his world. Bolter and breacher focus, no 'new' or rare gear (so no terminators) but they get the Primaris stuff like Centurions etc. 1200 strong, has about 100 Spess Marins errant going around and helping the common citizen. Imperial Fists gene seed.Orkz:Blood Axe Kommando Freebootaz. Infantry and Dreds, focus on shooting. No Meganobz, no vehicles beyond air support. Looted and stole an old imperial ship that had had a hive built over it after the boss (Zagrot) got his shit kicked in by another warboss. Rebuilt his mob under the nose of the other warboss, nicked the ship, destroyed the city just to spite the other fucker as the ship tore its way out and left. Kunning as hell, works with a LOT of humie slaves on the ship, happy to work with Imperials for the right payday.Admech:Former Archaeotech Magos on the outs with the political scene because of his views on the human body (the Omnissiah decrees the fusion of man and machine, but the body is a temple. To desecrate it with machine not made in the form of man is an affront to both in his view. He's been rebuilt totally, so he's absolutely a cyborg) To successful to delete, to good to waste, to much of a problem to keep around. 'Given' a Mechanicus Cruiser and a retinue and told to fuck off and don't cause problems. Skitarii focus with lots of servitor heavy weapons, only Dunecrawlers for vics, maybe a tank or two.
>>96809525I love your dudes, anonThank you for sharing!

>>96804938>>96805723>>96805732Took a stab at making a boss tanka vehicle using the 3rd/4th edition vehicle design rules. >>96812299Oh I didn't fill in the BS because I wasn't sure if I wanted the BS of regular Orks or use the Feral Ork profile to represent the weedier boys (Dey ain't Big, but dey get da job done). Normal Orks are WS4/BS2 while Feral Orks are WS3/BS3, which I think might work better for not being big but also have the Loadsa Bioniks and having the Drill & Discipline with their tanks and their tanks guns and their tanks gun's son's.
>>96812299Man. I miss rules like that.
I once thought about getting and painting up Imperial Knights with casino-like palettes. Not wanting to go too in-your-face about it, maybe something a bit more subdued outside of maybe the biggest knights being gaudy motherfuckers. But if I wanted to expand this idea a bit with a homebrew knight house, is there any good reading material to get more insight on how they typically operate? Doubt a bingo sheet of common/ridiculous traits exists for kniggas like they do for homebrew SM chapters, but still wanting to get a grips on what to do or avoid.Did take a nosy through the roll table, which I'll try answering sometime later.
I would like to explore the idea of a chapter not made with chimeric or blended geneseed, but which did inherit some Marines of a different bloodline thanks to an administratum fuckup during its Founding. The central premise is that while the new marines were made from geneseed A, the planned and correct geneseed, the veteran Marines seconded from a different chapter were from geneseed B. Essentially, chapter A got the veterans meant for new chapter B and vice versa, and because theyre in different segments (and the administratum isn't exactly known for admitting mistakes), the fuckup was deemed too inconvenient to simply swap back. Over time, the veteran Marines would die off as one would expect, their genes merely being lost or returning to Terra, but their cultural influence would be strong, and linger beyond their lifetimes. It would also go deeper than a chapter merely interacting with and learning from another nearby chapter. Cool idea, or retarded?
>>96815533I guess. I think them keeping the geneseed because the Administratum won't admit mistakes would be more interesting
>>96815960I thought about something along those lines, but I felt like keeping the geneseed would merely open me up to accusations of being cringe or chimeric.
>>96815960nta, but keeping the geneseed would paint a massive target on the chapters back if they decided to hide things from mars like that. might even get them accused of legion building
>>96796339Lore of my dudes is so fdly that it's easy to brute force them into something (It is also easy since most of AOS seems pinned to Ghur)>>96795865I am mostly a fantasyfag or rather an AOS fag (which makes me secondary to subhuman in some peopoles eyes)My Daughters of Khaine "tribe" in the realm of Ulgu are a bunch of girls sent to Complete middle of nowhere only to be kind of forgotten by most Gods. That's allied with the local settler city of Thirst Haven(it sounds better in these DOK's language) only because of convinience and allowance of fighting pits. They are rulled by a bunch of Bloodwrack Medusas and "mine" is called Msukania (whom I HAVE...But I cannot be bothered to Build the shrine). Due to local animals they refuse to field Khinerai [as a pretext to why i don't field them (because I hate painting them)] and Often use stones to do these Khatchkar-like things sometimes gigantic chiseled in local Realmstone. (the big Dark blue one)Recenly a force led by Msukania got of her ass and she and a bunch of other melusai decided to follow a giant troupe of weirdo Lizardmen led by a Slann wizard who after a skirmish with FECs got his hands on some skull and it led him to have weird dreams abaut Great Plan and Total...Vampire Death. Also a small group of mercenaries led by a fake noble,Not Totaly there Preistess of Khaine, and a Elf Witch on a dragon who was a younger sister in the fammily and decided to search for Powerful items in this weird crusade. Lore Is pretty much a handwave. I might change it later If I get a new Model
>>96816568Speaking of Lizards. Like I mentioned earlier. Their Slann preist started having weird dreams and is now on a Weird crusade in The Name of the Great Plan(tm) where this whole group will stay in one place for what seems like years or in some city. Only to be teleported to even a diffrent realm to Destroy locals only to be teleported back to the old place and behave like nothing happend. All because afther some skirmish with FECs he found a skull made of pure Realmstone.

>>96816427Excellent conflict fodder!
>>96818736maybe keeping them as honored relics or something, but i dont think a chapter can just squirrel away geneseed like that without attracting the kind of conflict that gets them all killed. cause theres conflict, and then theres CONFLICT, and thats the wrong kind of canon bending conflict.
>>96818983That's definitely true. Good way to wind up with a Badab on your hands.

>>96819148Damn homie thanks for the heads up. I snatched those from an ancient /ydg/ and didn't even think to check those.I'll keep that in mind for next time!
>>96819185No worries. I thought they might be fucked up because I myself was hunting for them this past week trying to brew up my shit ass canon violating garbage tier chapter of the year's paint job, as is tradition. And I couldn't find em. (I was very hopeful you might have, though)
>>96819087thats a hilarious image by the way
Do Iron Hands successors ever actually do anything? They're such a one track chapter it feels hard to do much with them without just going "I'm going to be the same as everyone else and just ditch the self-hatred aspect to make room for character development".
>>96819307They really don't break away enough from the mold. Like, the Sons of Medusa pictured above are literally just 'Iron Hands but Green & Retarded'.It's a shame too because as we see from chapters like the Black Templars and Crimson Fists a successor chapter doesn't exactly have to be a 1:1 xerox of their parent Legion.
>>96819474That is unfortunate. The natural urge is always to shake things up a bit, but it always feels like violating canon, too. Same thing with non-Primaris Salamander successors. The canon says it *can* happen, but it always *feels* wrong to do so since it mostly didn't in canon. Really sucks when it feels like the Loyalists really only consist of like... three actual Legion choices.
Question for the learned anons. If the High Lords knew that a chapter being founded was intended to have a lot of anti-Space Hulk action (stationed to guard a Warp Storm known for popping out Hulks with abnormally high frequency), how many suits of Terminator armor might they logically assign the chapter? Whereabouts is the line between "yes, they planned for this and stocked more accordingly" and lore breaking quantities?
>>96820018Considering the High Lords' pets - the Minotaurs - consistently field their entire 1st Company furnished in Terminator Armor, I'd say that if they are motivated they can arrange for just over 100 suits.Much like the Minotaurs, though, this would necessitate them considering this chapter to be useful to their ends, not just to the Imperium at large.Speaking of Minotaurs, the other means of getting Terminator Armor seems to be cozying up with the Mechanicus or having enough political clout to steal every suit you can get your hands on without getting censured. Those would be options as well and could be a way to hoard even more suits long term.

If a chapter loses a battle barge (or all their battle barges), do they ever get new ones? Are they capable of rebuilding their own fleets themselves, or do they have to just pray a local Forge World shows mercy to them?
>>96816665>>96816652I thought a mega gargant was one of those Ork walkers?
>>96824703I think that chapters could manage the maintenance / repair of a Battle Barge without AdMech support but I can't see them actually getting a whole ass ship without them.Even if they weasel their way in via a Navy/Ecclesiarchy/Administratum middleman it ultimately needs to come from someone affiliated with Mars.Only exceptions I can think of is calling in a gigantic favor from a Rogue Trader or the Inquisition.
>>96822328The Codex Astartes has a bit of wiggle room. Vehicle and Battle Barge crews, the Captains, the Chapter Master and his Honor Guard, Librarians, Chaplains, Apothecaries, and Techmarines don’t count towards the 1,000 Battle Brother limit, and the Scout Company can get away with being a little overstrength while waiting for openings in the Reserve Companies. If the Chapter is going into a protracted campaign, then restrictions can also temporarily be loosened because they’ll be taking enough casualties to balance it out. Plus, 1,200 could just be on-paper, with the actual strength being more Codex-compliant.
>>96826252Not to mention you have the Black Templar method of 'staying on campaign 24/7 and never filing censuses or taxes'
>>96826778If I've learned one thing from being on this hellsite for years watching everyone make custom chapters, it's that the "Black Templar Defense" is one of the more cliched, frowned-upon justifications. While it's true that the crusading rule exists, everyone and their dog has tried to use that old chestnut to bend the rules. It's pretty weak writing to deploy.
>>96826778Plus, that anon was suggesting that his Chapter were also Imperial Fists successors.
>>96795865https://bolterandchainsword.com/bcp/smp.phpBy the looks of it, this link does still work for the old marine painter. It has none of the options which were supposedly part of later iterations though, so I assume this is legacy material that escaped deletion somehow.
>>96809525This is me.>>96822328Why not? The whole point of them being overstrength is that there is *bare minimum* 100 marines on the planet (of various types) to guard the munitions foundry. Realistically, the 100-150 marines are always there which are composed of a lot of marines who are outside the TO&E as >>96826252 said.Is it 'against the law' to have them only move in formations of roughly 200? Because that's what they do
>>96826917I think it's amusingly realistic. The Imperium was too slow catching the Templars so they're stuck with either letting them continue their bullshit or waging a horrendous civil war. That, however, in no way means that they would ever let anyone else get away with it. On the contrary I think the High Lords and Inquisition would be all over a chapter that tried to follow in their footsteps faster than stink on shit.
>>96827363It's hard to punish a Second Founding unit, yeah. One should never try to do as the Templars did. It won't end well.

>>96803487I think that kills Crusade in 10th for me is the missions and upgrades are tied heavily to the setting they're in. 9th edition had the generic ones in the core rules and GW would also do mission packs along with the main Crusade books. 10th its just Tyrranic War, Nachmund, Pariah Nexus or Armageddon. Nachmund I like the taking territories mechanic but it's tied heavily into the deepstrike stuff. I feel like it's harder to craft a narrative in your own little warzone this edition.

Rats are children acquired by many, and often most usually illegal, means. Bought from space pirates, stolen in the dead of the night, forced into service from the Korps buying out their orphanage; Rats end up in the Korps in a variety of ways, but they all share the same grim fate; forced PMC work or death. Upon enrollment, all Rats have a chip that injects them with a lethal and fast acting poison installed directly into their spines, whereafter they recieve 6 months of gruelling training to learn how to operate mech frames and to prepare them for combat. After their training, Rat's are shipped off to "Nests", slang for cargo ships and carriers that serve as the homebases for teams, where they then rake in money for the Korps until they either die or manage to live for 2 and a half years, where they earn the oppurtunity to either leave and have the chip removed or stay and begin earning money. While in service Rats are not allowed to talk about their past life, even mentioning their name will earn them a beating, which has led to a trend of Rats coming up with nicknames which double as callsigns for missions. For my specific crew this is the Nest team "Carter" comprised of>Warhorse (Age 17, 19 Months service)>Apricot (Age 13, 9 Months service) >Winkie (Age 15, 16 Months service)>Mongrel (Age 15, 10 Months service)>Coco (Age 14, 13 Months service)I've put orders in for the mechs to get printed, and for the time being I've used an avatar creator to make portraits of the Rats but I plan on getting comissions at some point. Part of a local gang on Izaja, he made the mistake of getting into a street fight where he was knocked out cold. When he woke up, he was on a Nest being transported to Ratkorps HQ for recruitment. Her parents never paid the ransom, but Ratkorps did. She uses her lightweight mech and drone module unit to scout ahead for the team, spotting for threats and providing covering fire
When you guys are making custom chapters and such, how much fluff do you actually bother to write? Is there a point to putting much effort into it, or is it just a big wall of words no one else would ever want to read?
>>96834049I usually just jot down some basic ideas. Maybe a few paragraphs. I’ll write up stuff about the games they play in but I don’t think I’ve ever written pages about any of my armies
>>96834617Good to know. How cringe is it to make a non-Primaris Salamanders successor?
>>96823263thats a pretty cool warhawk what did you kitbash it with?
>>96834675Annihilator right arm, Kingfisher left arm, Awesome legs. Shoulder pad is also cut and rotated off of an Awesome, and the dual laser merged with it is the arm gun sliced off from a Grendel, IIRC. I call it the Desert Rose.
>>96834638I think it’s fine.
>>96834049For me it's usually a one-pager, a chapter symbol, and a little bit on a character or two.
>>96795865Haven't written much for my DG warband for awhile but here's the outline of their fluff. For some context, their lore started as an elaborate joke about fat unhygienic dweebs obsessing over pure elven waifus, helped by the fact that when I was getting back into 40k I was playing against Eldar a lot.Lately I've been musing on fleshing out the more conservative wing of the warband who are unhappy with Putrefax's "eccentricities" when it comes to dealing with Eldar, even possibly having on them attempt a successful mutiny against the daemon prince. While I kinda like that narratively, the more traditional wing taking over and ending the while "Maidens of Nurgle" thing would strip out the big thing that makes them uniquely gross amongst the rest of the Death Guard - though it would make them a little less "fetish-baity". Something I'll have to think on some more for sure.>>96834049About a paragraph is best IMO - enough that you can give someone a good impression of who /yourdudes/ are during casual chit-chat while you're setting up a game and coming up with a narrative for why they're fighting. I like /yourdudes/ background to be a jumping off point for the action that actually happens in battles you play, let their most notable victories, defeats and accomplishments be things that happened on the tabletop.
>>96835352That's neat! Internal rivalries and power dynamics are really important, especially for Chaos.>>96833659I'd watch this show. Need to check out this system.
>>96836282It's a cool system; it's u-go-I-go but every mech uses "heat" to make actions which then can also overheat gear and weapons but when they enter their venting cycle you can start scoring so you're trying to time when all of your mechs vent and when to make moves>>I'd watch this showCheers. Still have more lore for those rats but text limit again. Team Carter are definitely the ones I've invested the most thinking power into but they aren't the only Nest. All nests are overseen by different handlers who kind of have their own spin on what to do and how they pick from their recruits>Team OktaviaMostly do scummy and morally shit jobs for asshole clients like terrorists, freedom fighters (terrorists) and space pirates (selfish terrorists). Obviously killing civvies and doing nasty stuff sorta takes a toll on the Rats there, so as an incentive the handlers let them in on the pay and reward MVP's with stuff like time off or even reducing their service time. Probably the most enthusiastic Rats but they're all a little nutso. Offensive tactics, pic related is from there>Team JudasRun secruity for Ratkorps HQ and peacekeep the local system. Always on standby to drop contracts if HQ comes under attack or Piper summons them, and it's where all the experienced and longest living Rats end up to the point there are a handful of them who have been in service for 3 or even 4 years now and been de-chipped. Usually work in duos with heavier mechs>Team NedrylSpecialists for war contracts; any prolonged campaign or large scale conflict goes straight to them. Highest mortality rate and brutal living conditions, every Rat is basically in it for themselves in Nedryl. Handlers are usually constantly reallocating funds so even stuff like food and water can be scarce. If you do poorly during training you usually end up here, and as of yet no Rat has lasted more than 2 years assigned to Nedryl. Run almost entirely light mechs and operate in large pack teams to swarm targets
Ok, so I've been pondering the words of all the anons in this thread. I have two ideas for a Space Marine Chapter I'd like opinions on, since I'm having trouble deciding between the two. I know for sure I want to have a group of White Scars veterans be seconded to lead the chapter, because the chapter homeworld is going to be a floating fortress within a gas giant. Lots of lightning in the clouds there, very thematic for Stormseers. The question here is how to make the rest of the chapter. The simpler idea I had is to create a 4th Founding chapter made of Imperial Fists gene-seed. The Scars are there because after the War of the Beast there just weren't any Fists veterans left to train the new guys, so other Chapters were asked if they had any spare soldiers. In fact, this chapter was so far at the tail end of 4th Founding requisitioning, they didn't actually get up and running until the 6th Founding, making them only 4th Founders on paper. Slightly less interesting, but easier to fit into canon, which is always useful. The more complex idea is an Administratum fuckup in a later Founding, maybe the 10th or 11th or so. A chapter of Iron Hands geneseed was ordered, but somewhere along the way an address got switched, sending the Scars veterans instead of the expected Hands veterans. Hilarity ensues as both groups culture clash with each other, causing chaos and nearly tearing the chapter apart before they figure out how to deal with the situation after... a while. The Iron Hands themselves of course consider the new chapter weak and tainted (because the Scars offer counterarguments to the whole bionics thing), and pretend like they don't exist, offering no assistance whatsoever. Which of these do you guys think has more merit as an idea?
>>96799366>I know how it is anon. IRL loves to get in the way. I love your guard though, reminds me of those little blurbs that used to be in the back of guard codexes back in 3rd and such. Those always were so cool. Thanks anon, those were my initial inspiration! The idea of guard regiments like Tallarn and Catachan that come from very naturally hostile words and assimilate that enviroment into their army is just generally one of my favorite ways to do guard and I have always been big on sea animals, oceanography and so on, given ocean worlds are an official thing in the 40k setting having a subnautica crew with tons of diving gear and harpoons in battle wouldn't feel out of place. In general im still making up a list for kitbash pieces and im kinda stuck at Solar Auxilia, Navy Breachers, IDK and Heretical Navy from TC so if you know any generally up to scale ocean themed bits and have any suggestions/ideas id be glad to hear! Im starting to really miss the 3d printer from my university now that im no longer studying there anymore, I might buy one for myself if I get the chance but holy fuck there's a big resin glue shaped hole in my kitbash loving heart.

>>96843137One aspect that is unique about the 33rd (and not strictly speaking approved of by the Guard, but universally decriminalized) is the editing of combat footage with the intent of distribution back on their home world of Athonos. Tunnel Rats? I think it pairs nicely.
>>96843137If the siege of a space hulk took 5 years, it was probably inhabited by Necrons to hold out that long. I have several pages of fluff detailing my headcanon Tilean dwarf hold. There's stuff like it's history, foundational mythology, economy, trade and agriculture, a few lines about satellite settlements and fortified positions...But also notable units, guilds, its relationship with the surrounding Tilean city-states.Most of it is an excuse to come up with italian sounding names and puns for my units; but sometimes I rather enjoy coming up with fluff.I also try to incorporate my games and their outcome into the fluff of the hold. So an unit champion that survived a challenge and killed my opponent's elf general psrrying all the attacks , got promoted to Thane, his family given a small fief and granted a sit at the holds' council. (In game terms it means that I now have an unit that I only field with this particular model always sporting the same equipment and runic items, and he's got himself a proper name - Venerando Durobraccio).Pic related is a small lore blurb i wrote for a mini campaign we're currently playing.
>>96847213The Blades of Da'at had originally been promised a world by the Administratum after their founding, but bureaucratic incompetence meant nobody had found out that the planet had been overrun by Orkz since last they checked and so the Blades fell into an ambush that almost wiped them out. Their distress signal was answered by the ancient and venerable Vortigurn trade dynasty who entered into a mutual partnership with the chapter, promising them all the worlds in its domain among the dense stars that once made up the Ruinstorm to recruit from if they made the throne-world their home and defended it as such.A few thousand years later and the dynastic holdings have expanded rapidly, attracting other Imperial factions to settle in the region as well as a shit load of xenos trying to eat/enslave/krump the place that the Blades and their associates have to hold, financed by the unfathomably deep pockets of a 10,000 year old trade dynasty.
>>96848198>Most of it is an excuse to come up with italian sounding names and puns for my units; but sometimes I rather enjoy coming up with fluff. This is how you Tilea.
>>96848417Goddamn, thats a lotta planets
>>96804384Same thing happened to every LGS near me. We used to throw "gladiator matches" where you'd have 50 points to build out a fighter and everyone would drop into the ring, last man standing wins. Nobody does anything like that anymore, partly because the rules don't allow that stuff anymore.
>>96850331>tfw every morning you wake to 10,000+ complaints and distress signals from planetary retards
>>96850374It's impressively dense. I did something like that once for a much, much older /tg/ project, but that only wound up with like 20 planets and their fluff.
>>96850354That sounds fun as fuck
>>96848194My pleasure. Here's some riffing I did on the concept. Are any of these hitting the spot?
>>96851316First one is pretty accurate, just need to remove the white. That's not actually part of the flag symbol, its just the background of the website I snipped it from.
>>96851955Ah I see. More like this?
>>96852119Yep, that's pretty much what I had in mind. I did a bunch of AI pieces that I thought would be really neat for the chapter, but then I read you cant post them on the homebrew wiki thing and was... very dismayed.
trying to workshop my imperialis militia force for HH, I call em Techno-Mercenaries From Hell (Armoury of Old Night/Cyber-Augmetics)>planet was cowed into submission by expeditionary force during tail-end of GC (not sure by what part of the imperium, maybe just the imperial army) with a relatively non-lethal show of force>prior to contact, planet had the lost the ability to travel beyond limited range of planets within the solar system, though had stockpiles of dark age tech and STC's that had been relatively well maintained, primarily in the realm of arms and armor, but limited petroleum resources and supply line instability made armor often variable from nation to nation, or even group to group.>nation-states and conflicts had remarkably similar formations to 30 Years War era Terra (little in the way of standing armies, primarily mercenary forces and rather fluid and hostile territorial claims)>former mercenary forces were forced into treaty and allegiance to imperium, and effectively made PDF/part of the imperial army under new oath>one of the larger companies, under commander Gideal Von Wailinste, had extensive cybernetic enhancement (somewhat primitive) as response to a particularly fierce bout of chemical warfare>horus goes apeshit>called to arms once more as their planet is invadedI'm thinking a thirty years war sort of theme, mixing bright, colorful clothes, cavalry men on motorcycles with sabres, pistols that look like a mix between wheellocks and las-pistols, field gun style artillery, and levy who are in various positions of firing (on knees, reloading, etc). Also with robotic arms and the occasional red, glassy eye. Plenty of dark, blanchitsu/30yw accoutrements as well, spiked shoulderpads, grand sashes, big hats, that sort of thing.
>>96852741to clarify, the second armor in the second > refers to tanks and such. its my inbuilt explanation for why I probably wont have many official GW tanks or artillery- I wanna give scratchbuilding another try.
>>96852741>remember men, the more powerful you are, the more stupidly pompous you can afford to look
>>96852119Think you could put the hurricane flags onto this dude's left pauldron? I guess they'd be like, halfway visible since it'd be pointing to the side.
>>96850331It is, thanks for noticing. I have notes for all of them (though some are admittedly sparse)Here’s a random one Diana-Pleasure world-A forest planet with two moons-Home to a variety of imported exotic beasts and animals, Diana serves as a hunting retreat for the wealthy and well-to-do-Ambulls, Crotalids, the deadly Gorebeast or vicious Razorwing, as well as several controlled species that are usually native to only death worlds can be found on the world, available for any noble scion or visiting dignitary to track on safari, for the right price.-Rumors of more advanced xenos beasts, such as Kroot substrains or various strains of Squig, even abominations spawned from Dark Eldar laboratories being imported by residents has the world under near constant watch by Ordo Xenos agents.-Tyranids especially carry a particularly grim reputation on the planet, as even one of their genomes could cause the entire world to not only be lost, but bring the hive fleet into the system, are a sobering reality. Any individual found to be trafficking or authorizing the trafficking of these particular creatures is often sentenced to immediate execution for crimes against the Imperium or a trip to a penal colony at best.-Apart from its hunting grounds, Diana is famous for its courtesans and consorts, who have won the hearts of many visiting blue bloods.
>>96853786I surely can, will take a shot at it after work
So, a resource for you all I happened to find whilst on my quest for non-AI picture makers: https://donjon.bin.sh/alien/system/It's a PAIN IN THE ASS TO USE, because the planet names become seeds which don't randomize past choosing a name itself, (so "Terra" becomes one planet, but "Terra II" completely changes the whole thing), but if you use a lot of the Snip tool, and some careful lining things up, it comes out pretty cool for a solar system maker. Here's the one I came up with, still working on my Iron Hands boiz with the hurricane flag. Protip: change the names to shit like "Established M38" and then just snip and paste, it keeps the font so you dont have to download a font pack.
>>96853786>>96854284Here you go, anon.>>96854947Very neat!
>>96855438Awww, shit. Thanks for the assist, brother. May you find the solar system maker equally handy.
>>96850382Thanks anon, you can get the assets offline which makes it easier. I think I google "FFG sector map maker" or something.

>>96845117Nicely explained list for a full regiment.
>>96850374The Trader himself is most often out of system, roaming the stars with his fleet to accrue riches and make discoveries that helps finance things back home, otherwise the sector as a whole is sort of a split authority. As the official partners of the trade dynasty, the Blades have the ultimate say so in the sector and no one’s arguing with space marines. They mostly deal with problems in the core worlds or on the defensive line worlds. The region to the east is stewarded by the Order of the Cruel Angel, the sororitas element I attached from around the chapters founding (the founding chapter master was a chaplain, so they’ve always had solid ties to the church). The west is under the jurisdiction of the Mechanicus, what with having so many forge worlds. The Nimuian Enclace moves in a thousand or so years after the chapter and agreed to assist them and supply the war machines in sector so long as any cool xenotech or STC fragments found by the trade fleet come their way.The south is maintained mostly by naval and militarum authorities, which is why it has such a high density of fortress worlds. And the big north sector is managed by a council of the highest lords of the biggest planets up there and their forces, along with a lot of knights and the like. The Ordo Xenos also has a fortress run by an inquisitor in the region on the planet Salome.Any trade dynasty that’s been around since the end of the Heresy has to know how to delegate and run a business, I wager.
>>96857388You'd be surprised how far legacy wealth and an ancient pedigree can carry even the inept.
>>96856413They always manage to be the funniest legion / chapter
>>96857663Wish they got more time in the spotlight.
>>96857388I can only assume hunger is a frequent concern for this sector, what with so many forge worlds and such compared to the number of agri worlds. One presumes that maintaining trade lines to other sectors is a top priority.
>>96859242I actually put some thought into that, it’s nice to see it validated. The sector is actually mostly self sufficient, part of the running theme of “success through anonymity” I’d been chewing on for it. In any other part of the Imperium they’d be a jewel to be stolen, but because they live next door to Ultramar and make a point of not attracting attention, they slide by under the radar. The sector is actually well fed, I tried to lay things out someone logically by having hives and cities only spring up around food source agri worlds, but things up north have their own lore exemptions. Sub sector two, that little one in the middle, is known the breadbasket of the sector with developed agri worlds, one the size of Venus that cranks out crop multipliers, reside. I’m sure many ships head to the forge worlds, but many of them are also fed by their Knight worlds. At the same time, lots of the planets in the sector are run of the mill Civilized Worlds, able to produce enough food for themselves with minimal outside help.
>>96859902Reasonable. Just don't fall into the trap of being *too* well planned and functional. That's when the off the record people start showing up to curb a potential threat before it can stand on its own.
>>96859902>>96860039This sounds like 'good ending' Badab.Like what if Huron was in charge of anything with slightly less stakes than the Maelstrom? You know.Escaping notice and micromanage is a great survival technique.
>>96860039The dynastic contract was signed by the Emperor Himself days before Horus arrived to start the Solar War with the instructions "Find out what's left of the worlds in the Ruinstorm", so after the dynasty actually got around to settling in, the bean counters had much bigger problems. At the same time, the dynasty has a fairly stellar track record with regards to fealty to the Imperium; 8 thousand years of paying taxes on time, a couple STC fragments turned over to the Mechanicus, at least one Imperial Saint canonized a long long time ago and they have a lot of inertia to do whatever they're doing, so long as it works, because there's more important shit to do.And finally, in recent years, the dynasty would have all that AND a Fists descendant chapter of marines in a heavily fortified position with a convent of Sororitas, a Mechanicus enclave, and close proximity to a politically alert Ultramar making any disruptions of the proceedings too much hassle to really be worth it, especially since they continue to pay their tithe even if they mostly don't have to because declaring that all your worlds are recruitment worlds for a Marine chapter when you have maybe two dozen and then expanding to over 150 through the years was a dastardly bit of trickery by one former scion to stop legally having to pay taxes. They probably got an Inquisitorial presence and landed on someone's list for a thousand years, but like always, they do a lot to avoid attention and just fade away.>>96860147I never got the "why" of Huron's big crime apart from declaring himself independent. Space Marine worlds don't have to pay taxes anyway.
>>96862602They had a space station as a fortress-monastery already, his error was overreaching his authority and commandeering multiple planets, none of which the Administratum had granted him. Also he went way over the 1000 marine limit. And then he fucked with the taxes. Whether M2 or M42, you do not fuck with the taxes. Space Marine worlds don't pay the tithe, but Marines don't get to take over worlds and say "hey you guys dont have to pay now".
>>96862684Most of the worlds in the sector still pay a tithe because their fealty is what keeps them from getting ork snipered, but the legal acrobatics of the Warrant of Trade and planets "willingly" joining the dynastic empire is a grey area. All the worlds in the empire become marine "recruitment" worlds but since it's 150~ worlds for a single chapter, we're talking less than .0001% of the population getting chosen, and that's without going into planets that are more popular to recruit from like feral worlds or Gargantua where everyone is 7 feet tall and ripped already. If some Admin clerk tried to bleed the sector for all it was worth there would probably be a legal challenge saying they're exempt from taxes, but they pay them anyway (like their neighbor Ultramar so and infringing on the legal precedent would surely get heard of by them) at negotiated but generous rates to keep the Administratum placated, again going back to the idea that if you avoid confrontation and being noticed, you minimize problems in the long term. The only thing they don't pay much of in the way of tithes is in regiments (not that they don't, it's just not as much), because the sector is under attack from basically all sides by someone and the Blades of Da'at are playing King of the Hill, so all the manpower goes to the almost 30 auxilia regiments in the sector, which I also have written up.
>>96855438So, I think part of this Chapter's story is going to be the complete loss of their original homeworld, which then leads them to create a new base within a bluish ice giant elsewhere in-system. Which is where that blue fade scheme comes from, and the hurricane flag logo. I think this then might be their "original" scheme, a tri-tone getup meant to represent the cold blue skies, the dense boreal forests, and the rich soil of the Feudal World they once ruled. What do you guys think?
>>96863259Probably? Kind of an odd question.
Still at the brainstorming phase for my Necrons but I know I'm going to be fielding a lot of Flayed Ones and I figure justifying that choice will be central to their fluff. My preliminary idea is their Overlord being an eccentric who is obsessed with finding a cure to the flayer virus and/or thinks it may be part of the puzzle to reversing biotransference, thus he willingly brings them under his banner. This has informally earned him the moniker of the "Leper King" by those who know of him and his activities, but which he wears as a badge of grim honor.Any thoughts or suggestions?
>>96863392Maybe if your Lord is eccentric, he sees the psychosis of the flayed ones as a good thing. They practically leap to his command and begin the attack, what more loyal servants could one ask for? Maybe they enjoy taking the odd trophy or two from their fallen foes, but what's a bit of scalping compared to meritorious service in the field?
>>96862684Man *fuck* space taxes.Kidding aside the key I think is to show how losing faith in the Imperium - even for justified reasons - can be incredibly dangerous.Like it's very easy to see why Huron made his power grab. The High Lords were being retarded. The Administratum were being retarded. Billions of lives were at stake...not to mention the (then) possibility of the Maelstrom becoming The Eye #2.So he took charge. And at first no one even gave a shit. Then by the time things got bad (heh) they had to get REALLY FUCKING bad.And in the end Huron brings about the exact thing he set out to prevent.>>96863149>>96863416I like it. Changing heraldry like that seems very accurate to how Chapters mature.>>96863392My favorite thing about NewCrons is when they act like doddering British Imperialists but with the utter ruthlessness of a bronze age warlord so this is great in my book!
What titles take precedent over other titles?Example: My chief techmarine is also my 3rd company captain, would people call him Forgemaster or Captain?
>>96864697Probably depends on where he is. Usually those two roles don't blend since the dual loyalty of a tech marine to Mars is mistrusted. 90 percent of the time they'd probably call him captain, since thats an actual rank. Tech marine isn't in the chain of command. If he's in the forges though, they might call him forgemaster.
>>96864697Combine them. Captainmaster.
>>96864710Okay, how about for a 1st captain who's also chapter master? Is he Captain or Master?
>>96864888Chapter master supersedes captain rank, your example is kind of like "what if a general was also a colonel" or some such thing. He'd just be called the higher of the two ranks, so Chapter Master. That said, I could see a few of his closer buddies in the 1st company calling him captain every so often to tease him and remind him how they used to be lads together before he got all promoted and shit.
>>96864948This guy gets it
>>96801118Its not just you, I've had the trouble with people at my FLGS treating pickup games as "tournament and list-building practice" Which isnt the worst but when the only enjoyment of the game is trying out new lists like its a Card game Ala MTG I think it breeds a bad mindset. "Rule of cool" only works in 10th if your "cool" units are decent at worse. The problem is the game is forcing you into playing certain ways. s bad for hordes because the games not built for narrative styled horde armies, if horde armies at all. I dont even blame my FLGS. Terrain rules suck so L shape is the only way to go, mission and scoring sucks so there's no reason to do tactical plays other than "smash models at each other and sit on point" Non named HQ suck so you have to at best kitbash /yourguy/ onto a named character gearset.Anti Narrative the edition. For me I'm not picky, my IG were Flamers supported by RPG launchers and artillery. as well as the HQ being a commissar. But I cant even run that anymore.>Thread Tax:Raxos 202nd a comical group of convicts, inspired by Civil war and ww1 styled Americans. the entire reject regiment is made of of "re-socialized" criminals who have had their unlawful tendencies directed towards the enemies of mankind. Lead by a Commissar who was demoted after assaulting a higher command official. The Whole army is more agreeable and rather unquestioning thanks to the implants as such they can be trusted with higher than average abhuman auxiliaries. There's currently a debate in command if the regiment still even exists as its been in service longer than usual.
>>96865486Nice art you got there. Judging by the girl on the right, you may have been infiltrated by the Tau.
Well, in all honesty these will most likely never become more than these two minis, but ideas popped into my head and so here they are.Only the left we have the Void Gryphons. Ultramarines successors, long ago lost their homeworld "near Algedi" fighting some unknown opponent in an incident that also saw the Crimson Hawks chapter completely eradicated. Willing to do just about whatever it takes to secure victory for mankind, even if it means some question their honour, though this has also won them the favour of some radical inquisitors and a few high ranking ecchelisarchy members. Currently busy trying to restore order up in the galactic north-east by assembling something of a mini Ultramar. In reality they were created from Emperor's Children gene seed, in an experiment which has perhaps not been entirely unsuccessful since they are still nominally part of the Imperium, if only just. They are sadistic, the chapter leadership decadent, they're ultimately only in it for themselves, skilled at using all kinds of dirty tricks (assassination, blackmail, espionage, kidnapping, betrayal, outright politics, etc) both inside and outside the bounds of the imperium. Things being what they currently are the chapter master has taken the opportunity to make himself effective ruler of his own little kingdom. Blue and orange with a gryphon as their insignia? That's how Frank Herbert originally envisioned the Harkonnens, and that's basically what they are.
On the right; Blades Argent. Dark angels successors, that maintain the highest standards of purity and orthodoxy and constantly strive for excellency in all things. Should one of them falter in any way he will spare no effort to cleanse himself of the impurities that caused this failure so that it will not repeat. So by space marine standards they are exceptionally dogmatic. Whenever they, due to that or other reasons, don't perform at a basically miraculous level (they are very might heir own harshest critics) they usually blame that on a lack of purity. This is then addressed by various religious rites and rituals, by assorted (usually quite invasive) treatments by the apothecaries, and most of all by extensive hypnomat re-conditioning. To the point where excessive hypnomat use has caused significant cognitive decline amongst most of the chapter, some battle brothers being little better than servitors as far as general mental dexterity is concerned. All of this also takes astartes away form the front lines, keeps them occupied with purification rituals when on the front lines, excessive and perfectionistic maintenance reduces availibility of their gear and vehicles, all the exttra medical work wears down their bodies, and their astronomically high selection criteria strangles recruitment. Frankly, they're not long for this galaxy, and after having checked that they weren't going outright Slaaneshi with all that perfectionism some inquisitors feel that a battle should probably be found for them to become martyrs in a useful way before they simply purify themselves out of existence.
>>96866205Tau? Arent those the ones with the multiple arms and purple scales that work with the bugs?Nah shes just an abhuman, she talks funny and cant read imperial gothic but neither can most of the regiment. (Note the Commissar commander does not know how, or why she's there as they are far from Tau space, but he's already on thin ice and doesn't want the inquisition poking around. She follows orders regardless.)
>>96795985this is fuckin great
On a completely unrelated note, I was granted our thread icon today (almost)
>>96867938A fine omen if ever there was one, boys. Get to working on those /dudes/.
>>96868481Well, today was a tremendous slog of crap. But... success. I finally, finally, FINALLY found a crude logo maker that isn't an AI tool, and lets you do shit without logging in and making a fucking account. I had one of these centuries ago in a different project, but fuck me if I can find it now. It was a lot better, and I guess is now tech-heresy. I'm trying to come up with a logo for these guys >>96863149to be their pre-"oh god shit's fucked the planet's been eaten by the Warp" temporary logo. It's meant to represent an eclipse happening over a mountain. Chapter Master (former White Scar) goes atop a mountain to meditate on how to work with the (represented as black for Iron Hands) Marines he must now lead. Sees eclipse (black and white symbolically merging). Comes back like Moses with some new ideas. Chapter memorializes the moment. Which of these two images sells that idea best? Complex one, seen here:
>>96868481>>96868906Or simpler one, seen here? Also the website is: https://app.freelogodesign.org/design/create if you guys want to try your hand at bullying it into making you some halfway decent vector art. Can add it to the pile of resources, OP. >>96795865
>>96868906>>96868913Honestly I think that eclipse symbol in the first one has legs all on its own.Other than that they both look good though!>>96867503Thank you! I'll never regret shamelessly ripping off Deff Skwadron
>>96869304Well, this is how that would look, but I think it'd have a hard time on a colored background? You'd have the white inside the one circle, but the white arc crossing the black circle would get colored in by a fill, right?
>>96869432For sure, but it's doable with a little finagling. If you'd like I'd be happy to make a png with a transparent background so you can mess around with it.Writefagging after work these days thanks to this thread so I'll be around.
>>96869432>>96869946Here anon, feel free to use this where / however.
>>96870980>>96863149>>96852119Very cool, much obliged. Could I coax you into slapping that onto the pauldron/marine images like you did with the other one, perchance?
>>96871117Sure, what colors you thinking?Happy to take requests from other anons too, it's good practice for me.
>>96871447The blue/green/brown marine from earlier with the eclipse wrapped around the shoulder pauldron, and another light blue pauldron with gray trim in face on view, again with the eclipse. Same way you did the two pictures for the hurricane flag one earlier, basically. Basically this is the "before" heraldry of the same chapter that became the blue gradient fade guys.
>>96824703The Crimson Fists lost the majority of their fleet then made a deal with their local Navy base for a few escort squadrons, three cruisers, and an Emperor-class battleship in exchange for a permanent garrison on a Ramilies star fort. So essentially, they get ships the way everyone else does - via expenditure of political capital and other resources, or by salvaging if they're lucky.
>>96871964Makes sense, yeah.
>>96847381Holy shit. Teach me your ways, my master.
>>96872130nta, but ive done similar things. it takes a good outline, being organized, and setting up your chapters timeline first. Once you've sketched out the span of time you have to fill, that tells you roughly how many chapter masters you might have had, for instance. Averaging 500 years service each is a good rule of thumb. Some shorter, some longer. Then once you've got your chapters table of organization and ranks made, you just start filling it out company by company. You know how many captains, sergeants etc each company will need, and then its paint by numbers. Add chaplains, techmarines, apothecaries and other specialists as desired.
>>96866649Normally id say loyalists made with traitor genes is extremely cringe, and it kinda still is, but because you're basing them specifically on the harkonnens its not so bad actually. >>96866661The story of what the hell happens when the custodes try to bring these guys some primaris would be quite amusing, methinks. One wonders if the custodes would even want to give the greyshields over to these nutters.
>>96873169The use of traitor geneseed did rather insist upon itself given the base idea, yes. I'm not sure even they know their true origins though. It certainly isn't the kind of thing they'd care overmuch about either way.As for the Argents I imagine the apothecaries as a bit less nuts than the rest. Mostly due to overwork keeping them from the necessary self-reflection to find faults in their own thoughts that have to be ironed out, as they have a chapter of sorta-hypochondriacs to handle. Appeals to their perfectionist nature would have sold the whole primaris schtick to them, and I guess in return they were actually given some greyshields based on some imperial bigwigs not seeing past the "the purest marines you'll ever find" bit and thought they'd take great care of the new technology. Those who knew a bit better what was going on may instead have seen it as a last ditch attempt to inject some sanity into their affairs. (Followed not so long afterwards when it was clear that didn't work by a "we bloody told you so" from those who really knew the chapter.)
How many Deathwatch goodies could my chapter bring back home from deployments if they have an extremely healthy relationship with them? Multiple battle brothers sent out at once, valorous service, having an inquisitor around locally, that sort of thing.I’m not talking any guardian spears or anything, just stuff like their frag cannons or a blackstar
>>96874339That's actually a good question, and one I'd like to ask as well, since this chapter im working on is going to be near a canon watch fortress, and have excellent relations with them. Mostly I'd like to have access to their specialty bolter rounds, but anything else is gravy.
>>96874339So having done a little research, basically you get to keep:The special silver pauldron, the fancy bolter they equip you with, and the knowledge in your head (at least the bits that arent classified), and that's basically it. Also whatever armor you brought with you will get upgraded in various ways and then return home with you as well.
>>96875654Okay but what if we're on each other's Sanguinalia lists, can I go home with a heavy thunder hammer.
>>96875882The most plausible way would be if you brought the hammer with you, and they upgraded it to smash xenos heads better while you were there, I guess.
>>96875987This is plausible. Much easier to *keep* possession of a hammer than to seize possession of one.
>>96876034Yep. I don't think anyone would bat an eye if Old Jimmy the Techmarine at watch fortress Wherever knew you'd be having to crack Carnifex exoskeletons like crab shells next week and screwed on a bigger head to the hammer. Maybe even with a spike cause he thinks you're cool, and you promised to bring him back some fangs to turn into a necklace.
>>96876442Worst case I'll fudge it by saying "We're out of pistols right now, will you accept a frag cannon?"
>>96874339probably the smartest way to get some bigger desthwatch loot would be if you found a former battlefield of theirs and stripped a crashed blackstar or something and just never told anyone where you got the shit
>>96866866Did you draw that yourself?

Fuck it wy not>NameSpiteful Sons>AliasesThe Scorned, Dregs, Blackheart's Runts>ColoursRed and black with gold accents>LeaderChaos Lord Lycorgus Krone>SummaryOne of the many warbands belonging to the Red Corsairs, the Spiteful Sons are uncommon among their peers due to the fact that their members are Astartes who either fell out of favor with the Red Corsair's upper echelons or just recently joined the warband after turning traitor or deserting their previous masters.Because of this, the warband is often overlooked by the rest of the Red Corsairs, who pay them little mind or respect. Many even see the Spiteful Sons as just a sort of training ground for new Corsairs, weeding out the weak and unworthy from their ranks. All of these is, of course, false. United by their desire to get back at those who wronged them by any means necessary, the Spiteful Sons are just as rutheless as their peers, if not more so.To be so underestimated however suits their Lord Krone just fine, as it means the iron grip of Huron Blackheart is not as tight on their leash as many other more influential warbands, allowing them to range further away from the Maelstrom and act more independently than most. While a generally minor nuisance for the Imperium, the Spiteful Sons do nonetheless stalk the void with ravenous hunger for loot, resources and recruits, attacking isolated outposts, committing violent raids on merchant fleets, or even hiring themselves out as mercenaries for other enemies of the Imperium.>Pic relatedSome random dudes of my warband
>>96834049I usually write whatever comes to mind. A general fluff about their founding/history and traditions, and then some isolated battle or event that they took part in, adding stuff after a particularly good or bad game

I got one. Probably impossible to have a tabletop army of them now but here they are>NameKnights Penitent>FoundingM42. Unofficial.>SummaryA group of dissatisfied Black Templars has denounced their own chapter of weakness , viewing their adoption of Primaris marines as a show of fear and lack of faith in the Emperor's perfect design. After all, what else but fear and doubt would convince their brothers that they are not the perfect sons of the emperor as they are?Faced with censure and possibly execution, the Templar leading the dissidents, a veteran who only recently returned from a lenghty tour with the Deathwatch, challenged Helbrech to either kill them or let them gather into a crusade of their own, so that they might live and die as true sons of Dorn.Helbrect, rather than risk a bloody vivil war within the chapter, decided to let them go. From that moment, the 'rebels' embarked in a self-imposed penitent crusade, exiled by their former brethren. This Penitent Crusade made rout for the Imperium Nihilus and cut all contact with their Chapter. While technically still a Black Templar Crusade, they don't address themselves as such, and vocally refuse to be associated with the weaklings they left behind. If the Templars are tainted by fear, then the Imperium is doomed, and they plan to go out with as big of a bang as possible
>>96886166I guess if one is going to try and find a plausible way to refuse having Primaris Marines, just fucking off is a decent one. Terra wouldn't consider them an official Chapter, so technically they're renegades, but it doesn't sound like they plan on living very long anyhow so it's all good. I can see the Custodes rolling their eyes, being very angry that these Marines have denied the Imperium their continued support, giving them the finger, and silently wishing them good luck on finding a good death somewhere.

What’s your dudes most shameful failure? What’s their biggest success? My dudes always end up losing a chapter master on their biggest failures, so the biggest was probably the loss of their third chapter master. Being a Dreadnought he had lead the chapter for almost a thousand years and was beloved by the chapter and their allies, so losing him shook the sector to its core.Their biggest success was probably being able to cleanse a chapter world that turned out to be a tomb world. It was right when the Necrons were appearing around the galaxy in their earliest, weakest state and thanks to a rapid response from the chief librarian, they destroyed the reanimation chambers and melted the overlord. The librarians ego was so large that he had himself interred on the Overlords throne so he could mock him for all time.
>>96887840Most shameful failure is losing all three of their battle-barges to an unanticipated warp-flare. The barges were recalled to the recruiting world because of an Ork attack, which drew in a simultaneous World Eaters strike following them. So many ships warping in such a close time period led to the local Warp Storm throwing a bitchfit, nuking all the heavy ships, some of the light ships, a bunch of Marines and the entire recruiting world itself. To this day, the Chapter suspects that an unknown 3rd party directed those enemies to their doorstep, setting them up for disaster. Biggest success is yet to be determined.

>>96887840This>>96885205 guy hereMy corsairs biggest success is definitely the time when they lured a fleet of Flesh Tearers chasing them into combat on a desert planet. I'm the same battle my chaos lord and his Terminator bodyguard tore (lol) the Flesh Tearer Captain and his lieutenant limb from limb, while my Dark Apostle and his legionaries slaughtered an entire squad of Assault Intercessors and a Death Company squad led by a Chaplain back to back without losing a single man. A lot of spoils were taken that day, and to add insult to injury they took the still living Captain and forcefully stuffed him in a Chaos Dreadnought chassis they had lying around, forcing him to fight for them and be tortured potentially forever.(My biggest and most decisive win against a friend playing FT)Their biggest failure is when during an apparently normal supply raid they got attacked by a Tyranid splinter fleet. The Spiteful Sons tried to put up a defense and thin the horde enough to get some more loot before running away, but when bio-plasma started falling on them destroying most of their heavy support in the blink of a eye, they just cut their losses and ran(Another game where another friend spamming giant tyranid monsters tabled me in 2 turns)

They dont require as many commissars as expected however due to a re-socialization chip in their brains. possibly a holdover from when they were westworld NPC's the chip doesn't fully lobotomize them but it tends to make them more agreeable to orders as well as directing their criminal tendencies towards the enemy.unintentionally it helps make them resistant to the temptation of chaos, Psykers have reported a troopers brain sounds like static. >>96890645Back for the day. time to list of notable troopers (IE the command squad)Commissar Vavamus Creo: A Commissar who was demoted to a "reject regiment" after assaulting a well connected planetary gov for gross negligence. After the death of the regiments commander aboard a Starfort and without proper command structure he has been advised to take command per the lord commissars instructions. He is not happy with this situation.Sergeant Ramirez "Stubbs": As a private his squad sergeant was killed by an Ork ambush. he managed to rally the group before being blasted by an ork burna boy. thankfully he wasn't engulfed however he's kept a rather nasty appearance from it. Least he got to keep the promotion.CRIME: Vice Forman, murdered current foreman.PVT William "Billy": Always wears thick black shades. the teams demolitions and explosives expert. He can rig pretty much any explosive with ease however hes got an annoying voice and complains a lot. The squad is annoyed by him on a constant basis but they also trust him to set up the defenses. Billy is actually a blank without knowing. you never notice him but once you do you always notice him.CRIME: Blew up a transport raft carrying local merchants.Faye Fortuna: A twitchy paranoid flame trooper who jumps at her own shadows. A rather strong trooper able to carry a heavy Boltgun or Flamer as if it were a lasgun, but despite her size her fearful nature means anything that spooks her is getting a blast of heated promethium. Crime: Arson.Medic Doc "Hew": A cheery doctor with a warm disposition but also seems like she never actually opens her eyes. rumors say her eyes "aren't right" she has an interest in abhuman biology as well as Pvt G'rl's "hooves" and how they work.Crime: Malpractice (Victim was still alive somehow)PVT "G'rl": No one knows her name, where she came from, or even what she is. she talks funny, cant read gothic, and doesn't know anything about imperial script.CRIME: Unknown.

>>96895343Its basically a 40k version of that. The setting is super gritty and i wanted to do something with a bit of dark humor. very "No one got hurt, well no one we knew"The regular troops even tend to wear gasmasks. As for extended lore theres currently a debate if the regiment even exists. Creo's reports still come in, despite the fact the regiment has been on multiple campaigns for emperor knows how long. The reports are weird as well. they detail things that seem impossible. Bullgryns smashing C'Tan shards. Baneblade blasting a hole in Be'lkor's chest. and ratlings shooting a warp smith. To the army because theyre lobotomized guardsmen all these battles just seem the "normal" thanks to the imperial propaganda machine. Theres also an ork kommando hunting them as well and somehow always manages to find them.
>>96895791They also don't know what Tau are. They don't operate near tau space and their primers are budget surplus and prolly 5,000 years out of date. They think Tau are those multi limb humanoids who live deep in hive cities and fight with tyranids. In this unusual case they're actually very good at identifying genestealers. as to what a "Blue hoof'd abhuman" is doing in the regiment, its not really known. The Commissar lore wise has noted that she showed up one day after the regiment evacuated from a Necron awakened world. He thinks there was a Tau force there as well and she was left behind. In "G'rls" case she was still in training so doesn't have the weird brain chips fire warriors usually have, she's also seen more than most Tau have and has realized that maybe Farsight had a point. Her "Abhuman Plasma gun" is just a tau ion rifle with the iconography filed off and a random Aquila taped on. She's gone completely insane at this point and I'm actually debating building a spare crisis suit and decaling it in imperial phrases. "For the Greater Gue'vesa Emperor"
I'm kinda at a loss on what to do for the alternate shoulder markings, anyone have any good ideas?
>>96897242Like for specialist ranks or what? I didn't think space marines ever used multiple heraldries for the same chapter.

>>96899072I really racked my brain on homebrew I've seen in a tabletop sense from me playing. I haven't seen much honestly and that's kind of depressing. A lot of guys just run their armies as blobs of guys, or "heres my Dark Angels, Heres my white scars, Heres my World Eaters."As for worst tho, its not personal but I always thought the Raptors Chapter and its intense like came from a fundamental misunderstanding. The chapter is very reddit where they want to feel like the main characters without actually liking anything about the main battle boys.If you want modern military tactics in 40k those factions DO exist.

>>96899072Worst that comes to mind is something I read on reddit some years ago. Basically it was an unholy combination of Grey Knights, BA and SW. It was a weird but fun read.
>>96904165I think its because to adapt a crisis suit to human physiology would require a Magos willing to get elbow deep in xenotech and modify it to interface with a human pilotA crisis suit is not so different than a dreadnought after all, except that you can get out of it

While adhering to the Codex Astartes, the Secutors have gradually shifted their focus more to close-range assault tactics and melee combat, and personal martial skill is paramaunt to many of the chapter customs.Traditionally, a Secutor can only raise through the ranks by challenging a superior to a duel for their position, and to refuse such a challenge without a good enough reason is considered shameful for both the challenger and the challenged. These trials by combat are often fought with ritualised brutality, and while they are not officially to the death, there have been cases of accidental killings. Personal grievances between brothers are also resolved through single combat, and the Chapter Fortress Monastery houses a great arena where Secutors may battle eachother for honor or rank. However, after being bequeathed with domain over the Karthago Sector, the violent tendencies of the Astral Secutors seem to have increased. They openly meddle in the government of many of the worlds under their control, extracting a steady tithe of serfs and supplies from the neighboring planets.

Any tips on how to craft a custom mechanicus enclave? Their organization is so wide and complex but simultaneously vague in comparable examples that it just goes over my head.So far I've got them living on the water forge world of Nimue with aquatic modifications such as squid-like bodies or dorsal fins and they spend a lot of time taking apart Xenotech and poking it with sticks.
>>96939863are they dark mechanicus? I was led to believe that while still prefering metal over flesh, the mechanicus still revered the shape of the human body and not turn into full blown squidsalso>That picjesus christ you do NOT need that level of granularity
>>96939863I am impressed by your autism. What you've got conceptually is already pretty good. Basic elements to consider: How does the worship of the Omnissiah/tech in general look when filtered through their planetary culture? Does the influence of xenotech alter their worship practices?Does the presence of xenotech draw suspicion or condemnation from other Forges? Have they actually done anything that crosses the line? Do the aquatic modifications extend to the organic parts of their bodies? Are Genetors and Magos Biologis given disproportionate power/influence in the Forge? Are they instead shunned? What is their balance of forces? Do they prefer large things like Titans, or smaller units like Skitarii? What tech do they have in abundance? More importantly, what do they struggle to acquire/deploy/maintain?What are their internal politics like? Are they unified in purpose, or internally fractured? What are their theological debates like? Who hates each other within this Forge World's elite or political ranks? Who would die for each other? Are they well known in their sector, for good or ill? Are they a hidden force, more protected but also more isolated? Do Imperial forces work gladly alongside them, or with mistrust on the rare occasions they take the field together?How/when did the Forge begin developing its tech path? Were they always aquatic oriented? Ask as many questions of yourself as possible, as if you were an investigative outsider of some kind trying to learn more about this Forge World. Then answer those questions. Above all else, it is infinitely more important to write about their hardships, fuckups, mistakes, failures and suffering than it is to write about how awesome and successful they might be. This is the oil wash that makes your miniatures look real, in literary form, and is indispensable.

>>96939902If the Magos dominus can have spider legs, turning those into tentacles to swim is with us comparatively minor
RatAnon here, just dropping a line that there's a really nifty tool called 'Mosh Lite' that lets you convert still images into the sort of janky vid-screen gifs that would be great for use in roleplay. See attached for one from my boys the 5th Sapper Section, a veteran combat engineering unit in the Regiment.
>>96943704The full gif is too big to share here, but here's the original piece I put in as well, just for giggles since the Compressed Gif loses a lot of fun detail.
>>96943704Evidently it does Webms too!
>>96943787>>96943721>>96943704Intriguing. Nice find!
>>96940226Bullet point reply because I’m on mobile-All xenotech is taken in to be studied on how to break more appropriately, the sector has strong ties with the Ordo xenos and the Deathwatch always wants to know how to defuse an Eldar bomb-The farthest they’ve really gone over the line is liberally making non-standard gear like more robust dreadnought chassis or wacky knights-Force balance is something I probably need to most thought of. I figure most of them would have to be skiitari forces but I’m unsure how to tailor them to the planets they’re attached to. I have two Titan legions already but things like the legio cybernetics are big blanks-The primary talent of the enclave is walkers and mega construction like ships, things that are benefited from being constructed underwater. I guess the hardest thing to find would be any unique alloys or materials since their opportunity’s for exploratory fleets is limited. Necrons piss them off, maybe they can melt their scrap down.-They’re fairly well known within the sector, they have a subsector which is mostly theirs-The internal structure is mostly based around the local Magos Mechanicum. An eccentric and adventurous type who gathers followers with outlandish ideas like water based lasers or gas that melts metal to be used on Dark Mech, though he also bribes a lot of them to be their by the promise of archeotech and stc fragments brought back by the local trade dynasty and getting first dibs on it. They’re loosely constructed on the idea of the unscrupulous private sector undercutting state institutions
>>96796533>I always find it so lame when a homie has a neat character or band only for them to be best friends with Trazyn or Khârn or something. That always devolves into comic book fanfiction stuff in my experience. You always get the worst kind of tumblresque self-insert fanfiction from this. At least it helps you know which of your friends not to let write a campaign.
>>96847812>Good times. I never regretted making my Alphas evil as hell instead of the 'are they secretly good guys' meme.> 'are they secretly good guys' meme. The horus heresy and its consequences has been a disaster for 40k
>>96947713I had a great pal, maybe in his early 20s, whose taste immediately went to shit when he got into HH.I vividly remember him excitedly explaining all his theories about which Primarch should come back to 40k next, because by that point all he wanted was the capeshit melodrama.
Hope we can do another one of these soon. Good hanging with you guys.
>>96951483This one was up for 20 days, so probably not enough traction for a true general but it could be made into a comfy weekly or monthly thing for sure.
>>96951510OP, here and I agree. Let's shoot for monthly and see where it goes! You guys rule
