Thread Question:
What was your first experience with an old school game like?
>>
What's the best system to get into OSR?
>>
>>96799035
Moldvay Basic, ie. B/X. It's quick enough to learn and gets you a taste of what OSR is like.
>>
>>96799035
Depends on what your reason for wanting to get into OSR is.
If you're curious about the history of D&D/RPGs, start with Original D&D, and then move on to Advanced D&D.
If you want something that's like old school games but more "modernized" because your group only plays 5e and is scared of things being too different, you grab a NSR like Shadowdark.
If you don't know why, you pick up BX.

That's really just diving into the deep end though.

It's not easy to just start playing OD&D. I had someone guide me through it and it still was a trip.

I played a little 1e back around when it first came out as a little kid. Then nothing for a decade.

>>96799035
MORKBORG.

>filtered by OD&D
It's literally baby's first RPG.
>>
>>96799339
Why are you a faggot?
>>
>>96799348
Because you give him attention.
>>
Is BECMI really that much worse than B/X? I always see B/X recommended over BECMI and I don't think anyone starting BECMI is starting with the Companion, Master, and Immortals parts.
>>
>>96799156
It's literally just the original general text.

If this question is sincere I assume it's just a bad faith bump though, ask again in the real thread: >>96799302

2e
>>
>>96799419
They're pretty similar, but I prefer B/X. And Mentzer was kind of a loser.
>>
>>96799516
It worked just fine before retards upset about 2e started shitting up threads.
>>
>>96799516
First one with actual intro text. The other's just had trove, links, and question.
>>
>>96799541
>>96799548
Why are you giving him attention.
>>
>>96799419
They're 97% identical.
I can't even name the difference off the top of my head, they're pretty small.
>>
>>96799478
Unironically.

Books are super clear and straightforward.

None of Gygax's original clumsy prose. AD&D but written for humans.

>I want cool books and I want to play something closest to the original
Old School Essentials
simply awesome but pricey and you literally need a buying guide, even if it's quite simple, to not spend extra and get everything you need in one go
the books are cool though
>I want cool books and I want something with more modern rules but old-school feel
Shadowdark
layout and art are very high quality and the rules are intended to hit close to home with modern 5e players
very easy to find players/tables
>We are very-very poor
Basic Fantasy Roleplay
it's an entirely free project, the art and layouts are shi... are an acquired taste
tons of additional material, modules that mimic the classics, new modules and all for free or at print cost if you want physical copies
>I just wanted a meme reply
why ACKS of course
