I never understood why or even how people play at conventions. Let me see if I get this straight:> loud environment> people you don't even know> narrow timeframe> people snooping on what you're doingAgain not an attack against those who do, but it doesn't sound like something appealing at all
>>96804784Normies and casual retards want to feel like they're "part" of something.
>>96804784For people who like unusual games its an opportunity to play them. Going to an activity with friends is a thing game groups do, get to see stuff together and talk about various parts of the hobby they see that are new or interesting. Not really sure why some humans like doing Thing more because lots of humans are doing Thing at same time and place but that's part of it. Not everyone is terminally online so don't have as much exposure to all the various things, this seems like more of a generational bit though. Living in a remote area with less gamers so going for variety. Road trips for festivals in general as part of americana and likely western culture as fun vacation time. Apparently they fuck sometimes.
Some people are extroverts who get enjoyment from that kind of interaction.I never understood why or even how people drink at bars. Let me see if I get this straight:>loud environment>people you don't even know>narrow timeframe>people snooping on what you're doing>more expensive
>>96804917Yeah I get the point but you forgot that people go to bars to get wasted and get laid. If they wanted to socialize they'd go to other places during daytime.
>>96804943Okay you get the point, the rest of your post is ignored
>>96804784Add to that>pre-made charactersI would never want to run a character somebody else made.
>>96804784> loud environmentLess of an issue than you think when everyone is less than 3 feet away from you. Even less of an issue when the event is hosted in a conference room.> people you don't even knowAnd all of them are on their best behavior because they don't know you either. In some cases, this is how you make new friends.> narrow timeframeAlso less of an issue than you think. Everyone knows they have a specific amount of time to play, so they don't fuck around, they don't around with the GM, they don't waste time. And unless you're doing some kind of tournament play for prizes, you're not going to deal with a lot of rules lawyering either> people snooping on what you're doingYou are playing a game. What does it matter that people at a con can see that you, also at a con, are playing a game in a room full of people playing a game?
I dunno, my brother and I are able to have fun. I like how ruthlessly efficient the DMs and Players are, which means you can get a lot of things done quickly.
>>96804894Yeah, normies and casual retards like...Gary Gygax, who designed most early modules specifically for convention play. Fuck off and kill yourself, you retarded tourist faggot.
I am not autistic so I am okay in meeting and socializing with new people.
>>96804784this is how I feel about interacting with people irl in general
>>96804784Let's see:>Loud enviromentIn places I went to, usually the board games/TTRPG section is separate from the louder areas. At least nothing loud enough to disrupt the gameplay.>People you don't even knowThat's a plus for me usually as long as there's someone that knows how to play the game to.>Narrow timeframeIt's a full day event usually so, unless you plan to play twilight imperium or something, it's maybe 1-2 hours of gameplay out of a 6-8 hours long event day.>People snooping on what you are doingYeah, you are in a public place, just roll with it unless it's other players trying to see your hand/pieces, than you cover your stuff better and call them out on it.Maybe I'm just lucky, but all the times I played random tabletop games in events, I almost always had a decent to great time.
I used to play Magic before it became p2w. At a convention, the people putting on a display are the trustfund babies and thier leeches. A regular player plays with friends or at a card/comic shop. Convention players are scum who don't bathe. So, 1/3 of teegee.
>>96804784It made more sense when conventions were more local events where you would go to meet a minor celerity for your hobby and spend the rest of the time getting to know other locals fans/ people you only knew through snail mail and newsletters, or later online. The modern state of conventions as a constant barrage of panels and events takes away from this atmosphere.
>>96805912>Gary Gygax, who designed…Wrong.
Just take 35micrograms of LSD and conventions become the best place on earth. Captcha YYYYDH
>>96804943>If they wanted to socialize they'd go to other places during daytime.get a job
The conventions i go to have each game being played in a private room. Those "normies and casuals" are actually far more serious about the hobby than most because they're paying hundreds and a hotel bill just to RP. Convention strangers have been among the best players I've ever played with, and the autistic, meek, quiet, shut ins on /tg/ are some of the worst players I've ever played with.
>>96804784I like when I want to test a game but I don't want to compromise with a table. Also to kill time and see new people outside my usual game group.
>>96804784You try something new with new people, maybe even new friends in the making. You're right about the loudness tough, need to select the environment in which you can meaningfully play. Different from trying a boardgame which (if not terribly complex) doesn't need to speak so much and so clearly.
