New Schizo Theory about Amonkhet.Amonkhet was just based on Egypt but also America during the slavery period. Samut is based on Harriet Tubman and Moses since Harriet was also known as Moses. This ties into the Exodus theme the block had. Samut being super fast is a reference to Harriet's speed as an underground railroad conductor.

Have dragonshields tanked in quality recently or something? I got these for a double sleeved deck and after maybe 15 games they're already creased, split, etc on both top corners. Thankfully this is a casual slop format deck so the cards being marked isn't a huge deal, but it's still frustrating.I have a old tron and boros burn modern deck, both double sleeved in dragonshields, that are still totally fine. 5+ years on both. They're scuffed/scratched as you'd expect from years of use but no bent/split corners.

>While 20th-century experimental culture was seized by a recombinatorial delirium, which made it feel as if newness was infinitely available, the 21st century is oppressed by a crushing sense of finitude and exhaustion. It doesn’t feel like the future. Or, alternatively, it doesn’t feel as if the 21st century has started yet. We remain trapped in the 20th century.>The slow cancellation of the future has been accompanied by a deflation of expectations. There can be few who believe that in the coming year a record as great as, say, the Stooges’ ‘Funhouse’ or Sly Stone’s ‘There’s a Riot Goin’ On’ will be released. Still less do we expect the kind of ruptures brought about by The Beatles or disco. The feeling of belatedness, of living after the gold rush, is as omnipresent as it is disavowed.>Compare the fallow terrain of the current moment with the fecundity of previous periods and you will quickly be accused of ‘nostalgia’. I think MTG was best when it was about Dominaria and maybe some other planes. When they started to do what I call theme park planes (notEgypt, notIndia, notAncientGreece) is when it went down hill, because Magic was already generic enough, this just sucked out more soul by not incorporating mythology and history into Dominaria and other more unique planes in a less obvious manner. UB shit is just the conclusion of it.That's my subjective take only tho.
>>96813171I think the original shittening was when they brought in Jace and the gang to turn it into comics-style serialization, and it passed a another critical point when they brought back Bolas because it marked a point where they stopped killing off major villains and just put them on the shelf to be brought back as the writers require. The theme park planes are annoying, but they could be done right as in the case of OG Ravnica and Lorwyn. Amonkhet et al are a result of laziness in writing and worldbuilding more than a failure of the basic premise.
>>96813171>When they started to do what I call theme park planes (notEgypt, notIndia, notAncientGreece) is when it went down hill,Honestly? Yep.Dominaria, Mirroden et al were the ideal. Real Magic settings, maybe vaguely influenced by some thing but ultimately extremely unique to MTG's aesthetic.Notice that the "theme park" sets began right around when Hasbro took over?

>>96812960I actually miss MtG Salvation - whenever a new set would come out, people would get together and make a "gauntlet" of new decks to test whatever shitbrew you personally came up with and they actually were always fairly close to what the metagame would eventually be (when the format is still new, anyway). I'm aware that some sites do "50 new decks with XYZ set!" but that isn't the same and they are not curated in nearly the same way.

>>96813171I 100% agree. There's no artistry to theme park planes, they take the most shallow part of any mythology and change the names. Another side effect of the theme park trend is that it removed all sense of mystery from the multiverse. Phyrexia should have been only one of many unspeakable horrors waiting beyond the veil of Dominaria.

MMM-MMM KPOP DEMON HUNTERS? GIVE ME A COMMANDER DECK RIGHT NOW
>>96814892>>96814914Oh no…
>>96814985K-Pop Demon Hunters is not getting a set, if only because it's one movie so there's genuinely no material plus making a set takes 3 years and the hype would go down before the set came out. It might end up getting Secret Lair products but it's unlikely it'll get a set.
>>96815051>it's one moviefor nowyou're only deluding yourself if you think they're not scheming up ways to make a sequel right now
>>96815062Well, if they want to make another movie that's going to take some time, two years at minimum. Then, when that's done, if there's still hype, they'll think about making an MTG set for it. As of now there's no material, it's like making an MTG set for the movie Drive- there are literally not enough unique characters or objects for one.
>>96814892>>96814914Secret Lair and Cummander is where UB garbage should stay. But if you put Demon Hunters or Hatsune Miku or any other similar garbage into Standard/Pioneer/Modern/Pauper as real cards that’s the moment the game goes to absolute shit.
>>96812201>belatednessFuck, that's it
>>96815051But if sl sells, and it will, they will create a full set.
>>96815169Spiderman sold like shit exactly because there was no material for a full set and they were forced to do cards like "helicopter" or "subway train." Trying to bruteforce one movie into a set is going to result in Spiderman 2.There are literally not enough setpieces in K-Pop Demon Hunters for a full set, as in, they would literally run out of memorable scenes or objects that exist onscreen before thy got halfway in. Because it's one movie.
>>96815187Yes but kpop demon hunters is aiming to be a full series, I think, I heard. So the set will coincide with the release of K-pop semen hunters 2.
>>96815051Jurassic Park got a set of 26 cards, KPDH obviously isn't getting 200 card sets but they could absolutely make a mini set.
>>96814892>>96814914why is this bitch still popular?
>>96815187They were doing well just making commander decks for these smaller UBs. Then mini sets like aftermath and the direct-to-modern AssCreed were abject failures so they decided to make them full standard sets instead, and now Spider-Man was also a failure and TMNT will most likely be another failure. They really need to learn that in order for a full UB set to be commercially successful it needs to a big one like LOTR and FF and that these smaller ones are better off being commander decks instead.
>>96815205What, so they're going to have the Magic team work in the movie set with the animators so they know what's going in the second movie and make a set before they release it? Absurd.
>>96814985I'd love to have a Kpop cmm!!!11! Would play well against my friend's MLP build
>>96814809
>>96815228No. But they will work with the creators of the movie to get some material for card making purposes before the movie release.
>>96815187>because there was no material for a full setthis nigga sayin' an IP from 62's doesn't have enough material
>>96815270Well, the problem (one of many) is that they didn't do classic Spider-Man, they did the new Spiderverse stuff instead because that is what is currently "popular".
>>96815259Yeah that's a comical concept, anon. They're going to try and make a set for a movie that literally does not exist yet, based on whatever materials their partners can toss them? On the *hope* that the second movie will have as much hype as the second? And they'd have to match their schedules perfectly so the set gets done around the same time as the movie? It's such a retarded and absurd idea even Hasbro execs would not go for it.
>>96815270Spiderman doesn't have enough material, yes. For 99% of crossover IP promotion, all you need is iconic characters. you wanna get your shit into Fortnite, Mortal Kombat, so on, all you need is a handful of beloved recognizable characters. But for an mtg set, you need way more than that: you need iconography, creatures and places and objects that fans will recognize and be excited about. One of the reasons for all god-awful cards in Spiderman was that WOTC were worried about players opening packs and not seeing Spiderman, because spiderman doesn't have enough specific places or objects or concepts that hold the same iconic and beloved status as its ~6 most prominent characters. You have to make a bunch god-awful generic filler cards with peter parker randomly slapped onto them if you want to get something recognizable to the majority of fans into most packs. What Final Fantasy had that Spiderman doesn't is the breadth and depth of non-named-character iconography to fill out all the needs of an mtg set with cards fans of the original property actually want to see. Nobody was worried about final fantasy fans opening packs and not seeing Cloud Strife, because they would see a moogle, or a black mage, or a summon, or a town, or a mother fucking Chocobo, and that would be exciting and cool for them.
>>96815312The "a turtle in every pack" thing for TMNT bodes very ill for that set, too. This is going to be the design brief for all UB going forward: As many characters they can grab, but make multiple versions of the popular ones to fill things out, oh and throw in WUBRG commander soup card, too.
>>96813736hopefully they release a kpop demon hunter onahole
>>96815287you're still wrong on that take, anon. the current [thing] is just a meme of the original print runs, either read the first 50 issues or go check the comparissons on YT>>96815312>iconography, creatures and places and objects that fans will recognize and be excited about>because spiderman doesn't have enough specific places or objects or concepts that hold the same iconic and beloved status as its ~6 most prominent charactersNot a neighborhood fren, huh? The “fans” you talk about would catch the “not-on-your-face” references. The tourists, on the other hand...
>>96815338I'd buy this
>>96815333That's an issue, and another issue is that the cards are getting increasingly phoned in. Any random legend from WHO outclasses all legends we've seen in Spiderman in terms of conveying the character.Like, this design could have been on any random card from literally any set for the last 10 years... the one cool thing i always thought made Universes Beyond interesting was that it led to loads of weird cards being printed with very specific and strange mechanics meant to evoke something from the source material. But now we dont even get that the cards are literally boring slop even without being cynical brand tie-ins... literally what is even the point if you can't recognize the card as the character?
You faggots are alright so I have some good and bad news. My friend works at WoTC and good news is that they're gonna release a Fate standard set in 2027. Bad news is that it's gonna have FGO in it because you can't make one 300 card set out of one VN. Rumour is that the chase cards are all the sabers like birds in FF, different colours, blue, Nero, Alter etc etc you know.So enjoy
Check out this cool card.
>>96815361Spiderman's setting is "New York." It doesn't have an expansive world to fill out a set with. There's a lot of Spiderman, he's been around for a while, but that's 60 years of depth, which doesn't translate to a Magic set, as opposed to breadth, which would. 60 years of complicated and dramatic stories told about Spiderman and his small core cast of supporting characters simply provide far, far less material of the type that's necessary to churn out interesting magic cards than the sprawling lore and proper noun factories that are FF, DW, WH40K, LTOR, etc. The very fact that the franchise tie-in is so centered around one single character, to the point where he personally has to be on like a dozen cards including dog-awful commons that i can't imagine any fan of his being excited about in order for the tie-in to be recognizable, is is an obvious sign that this wasn't ever a feasible product.
>>96815361Unfortunately, WotC has gone on record multiple times that they aim for low-level mass appeal, not deep cuts. See: Akroan Horse as an example they keep bringing up years later (they cite it as a failure because a bunch of uneducated people "didn't get the reference"). They want and actively aim for the tourist crowd for everything, both UW and UB.

That's why Kamigawa felt so fantastical to me personally, because I knew jack shit about Japanese mythology so everything was unique and interesting.

It just feels uncanny, and with good reasons, because if you take notAncientGreece Theros, for example, real life had its counterpart, but it also had civilizations and people living in vastly different ways as well, due to different technological levels, climates and so on. So it seems silly to have whole plane based on just one civilization/location. It's just feels cheap.

>>96815733nigga it's a phantom cube
>>96815714Well they are the pop-culture version of whatever mythology they are aping for the Plane, rather than any sort of deep nuanced view. >>96815971yes, and now Arena finally has a single fun format besides [current set draft if the newest set happens to be a good draft format].+ this means there will probably be a Vintage Cube Arena Open where you get to play competitive vintage cube for $1000-$2000 if you make day 2.seems significant that WotC is breaking the heuristic that MTGO is for Constructed + Vintage Cube, Arena is for Limited + Standard.
>>96816073idk dude they're probably gonna put alchemy cards in the cube, I don't really want to play that shit
