This is before factoring in dev salt where they legit shut down the servers because players were doing appreciable damage to their super boss who they wanted to sell as undefeatable, or that a raid from one of the older MMOs they made was thought unwinnable by the player base because in all of nearly a decade nobody had stumbled across the non-cheese way to fight it that was probably still impossible because of network code of the era that wouldn't allow the party to properly sync up even if it was using the right members/loadouts.Not sure about the plot aside from you maybe wanting to not spawn in the timeline before A Realm Reborn unless you have a 1-Up you're willing to waste on an extinction event.

The culmination of the black mage questline for example has you stopping a rogue comet that is about to crash into Eorzea and kill everyone and basically no one knows it's coming except for the spirit of a long dead black mage who you only meet and talk with thanks to events that happen during the course of the questline. It's basically completely blind luck that everyone doesn't die to a completely random comet-turned-meteor.If you don't do the white mage quest line a grieving necromancer chick will poison the leylines of the land with the essence of death and render uninhabitable at least Gridania and probably Ishgard as well, again it's only blind chance that the sequence of events leading up to resolving things happens before they get completely out of control. There's also the events with the Crystal tower, you *have* to do them and you have to make sure to not only resolve them in largely the way they did in canon but also make sure G'Rha Tia seals himself away in the tower because if he doesn't he won't be unsealed in the future she he can time travel into the past of an alternate dimension in order to set up the events that lead to the salvation of the First and thus prevent a calamity from happening both on the First and the Source. Incidentally this same series of events also explicitly prevents you, the Player, from being killed by a weaponized super-plague called the Black Rose.Honestly there's a ton of shit happening all over the place and while a lot of it isn't critically important to stop it'll still result in an awful lot of damage if things aren't dealt with. Without meta knowledge it would be very tough to pull off a win without extensive right-time-right-place plot armor.
