>>96835299All right, people. Let's find them and get this shit updated.

>>96835389Good luck. I spent a month trying to get someone just to post the new UA and have given up and removed it now. It was embarrassing for the whole thread to be two UAs behind.
>>96835311>Play a dour, low CHA dwarf warrior>Still end up having to take point in social engagements because I'm the only one who speaks up, asks questions, and offers solutions to NPCs' problems>Meanwhile the "social butterfly" bard rarely pays attention to conversations and frequently has to be reminded of things we heard five minutes agoShit's downright goofy.
Any leaks for the two new Faerun books yet?
As a DM, I fucking suck at roleplaying and making NPCs and locations come to life. I can barely do any sort of improv, and I have to take a good moment to think of responses to my players, and even then, shit still just doesn’t come out right.Guess that’s why I just run a ton of combat.
>>96835552>Man burdened with the responsibility of leadership fantasizes about not having to do it>Man incapable of leadership fantasizes about being able to do itMany such cases.
im about to DM a campaign where one of my players doesnt really enjoy combat and just wants to roleplay whereas the other two arent very into roleplay and prefer to just focus on the "gamier" aspects of dnd - ie. combat.is there a way to design the campaign to please everyone or are they just going to have to accept that they'll be taking turns in the cuck chair?
>>96836062Do you WANT more other stuff? If you want to improve at something, unfortunately you gotta practice it. Sucks to suck. (me too)I make NPCs fidget a lot. They fiddle with whatever's in they're hands, they continue to do whatever they were doing before the PCs came by. >The smith hammers away. Ting ting. >the merchant rubs his hands and is always reaching into a different pocketI try to describe sounds being made that aren't speech. Smells and feels work, too. Taste isn't usually applicable. Grab any module, any at all. Flip to any page and read the boxed text literally out loud. Write a new boxed text for that room that's better. If you can't remember it directly after writing it down, your players won't remember the details, so rewrite it. >>96836583By "roleplay" do you mean talking to NPCs in character? Include more talking enemies, have them talk amongst themselves out loud, have them shout at the players. Have your fights matter to what's happening. You're fighting the baddies because it furthers the goals of the PCs. That helps the RP folks. And if fighting furthers goals, that keeps the crunchy guys on task by wanting to complete whatever they're up to because they get to fight more baddies.pic unrel
>About to fight some demon and ghosts haunting our new house>Set up a magic circle to keep some protection>Demon appears eventually, it sets up an Ice Wall and I get caught in it because I rolled a shitty dex>Lost concentration on my Shadowspawn>"Can I see through the Ice? I want to use Benign Transposition to get out">"No">Have to use Dimension Door to exit out, out of 4th level spell slots>Wanted to try the Summon Construct spell>Eventually Demon uses Ice Wall again on the other players, now they're trapped>Player outside of wall asks if he can somehow use Misty Step to get in>"I'll say that by remembering where everyone was after having just seen them you can use Misty Step"Man, what the fuck
>>96835311>TQI still have my character interact with NPCs regardless of their charisma. In universe, my character isn't gonna think about their charisma stat the same way I would as a player. When I do a lot of the talking, I do feel bad, since it feels like I'm hogging the spotlight.
If I'm homebrewing a magical affect how do I know what save to call for (Int vs Wis vs Cha)? Are there guidelines for that sort of thing?
>>96836674Compare against spells. Wisdom is the most common, but it depends on what you want to target. What mental stat does your spell/effect affect the most? Show us whatever you've got. You can make something intentionally stronger by targeting int or cha, as those are typically weaker. Or if it's an ability to be used against the party, you should know your party, but str can probably be put into those weaker saves. Cha may or may not be a strong/weak save depending on your party.
>>96836674I’m sure it’s somewhere in the rules but here’s a quick rundown.>StrengthResisting being moved, restrained, knocked down, grapple like effects>DexterityAvoiding or dodging things eg spells, traps etc>ConstitutionResisting disease, exhaustion, maintaining concentration on spells, and poisons>IntelligenceResisting psychic powers, mind control, illusions that alter perception, mental manipulation>WisdomResisting charm, fear, illusions that compel behaviour. Basically willpower.>CharismaResisting banishment and possession. Some domination spells.Honestly the mental ones are pretty similar but some spells target different ones. The main three are con, dex, and wis the rest are more fringe cases.
>>96836062Most 'good roleplayers' roleplay too smoothly when they're being NPCs. When was the last time you had a conversation with a complete stranger, sober, not buying something? People are fucking awkward and stilted. If you ask someone for directions, it's almost certain the first response will be "Hmm?" as their brain parses being actively interacted with. Taking a second to reply is normal for how strangers talk to each other.
>>96835311>If your character has low charisma do you just sit back or still try to talk to NPCs at the risk of failing a check horribly? On the other side if you have high charisma do you constantly take centre stage? As GM I have NPCs be more acerbic towards PCs 9 or less charisma, and more forgiving towards high charisma characters, but nonetheless when there's a check to be rolled, I usually encourage all players to contribute regardless of their stats and then regardless of who talked allow the PC with the highest charisma/skill to roll (as long as they are physically present at the conversation). It's mostly for gameplay purposes, but sometimes we joke that roleplay-wise what's happening is somebody gives a giant argument for something which the NPC considers awful and then the party face just nods and the NPC suddenly changes his mind because if the cool guy agrees then he will agree too.
How might I confer resistance to slashing, bludgeoning, or piercing to humanoid NPCs in a diegetic way?For example, say that a group of very persistent trolls has been fighting the denizens of the same Dwarven stronghold for many years. What might be a legitimate, preferably non-magical, way that the Dwarves would start optimizing their armor to protect against the clubs and rocks used by the trolls?
Philosophical questionWhat would be the difference in creating the illusion of a bridge to trick someone into crossing it and falling into the hole it spans versus conjuring a bridge that dissapears the moment it is touched?
>>96837135the illusionist is deceiving someone with a false perception of safety, whereas the conjurer is actively choosing to just drop someone to their death or into a river. they're both quite similar, actually, especially from the POV of someone in the situation
>>96835311I have never played dungeons and dragons before, I don't like voice chat, is there anywhere to meet friends with to play it? Are there any terms specific to it, and is there any way to find a group to play it with? I'm a NEET so...
>>96837182Sometimes colleges might have boardgame/rpg groups but usually those are for fellow students. You could also look into your local card/game shop if they host games or allow you to host one in their space. You can also look into local groups via various social media where normies would typically hang out.
>>96837196I'll try my game shop, I wish it'd been much easier to find a group. Should I check out Instagram for it? Or something similar
>>96837207Really, your best bet is just to find someone that DMs or knows someone that DMs and ask to get involved. It's a networking thing. You can try a pickup with randos, but they typically don't work very well, anecdotally.
>>96837135Reminds me of one of my favorite psionic disciplines from anon's bullshit.>make a real bridge into an illusion so people fall through it
>>96837234My disappointment with how they do psionics is that they could save the hassle of trying to create a whole new class and give the bits and pieces to the other classes and integrate the flavor more.Turning your body into literal weapons? Perfect for Barbarian. Dump illusionist/divination/enchantment and have them all under a psionic wizard (hell, you have the perfect archetype in Jace)
>>96837135If a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound?
>>96836610>By "roleplay" do you mean talking to NPCs in character?yeah, hes basically only interested in larping as his character and actively dislikes having to think strategically for combat. the other two are the opposite, put off by acting in character but like the strategy stuff. its not a great group but theyre my irl friends of many years. it sounds like im on the right lines based on what you said; the fights i have were already of importance to the story, so hopefully thats enough to keep everyone engaged. thanks anon
>>96837872tell your 2 other players that this is a roleplaying game and rp is not the thing you do between combat but something that is all the time. Rp is not making funny voices, it's making decisions and actions from the pov of the character Social encounters? roleplay - my character would like to mingle with his fellow nobles at the king's receptionExploration? roleplay - my character would like to commune with the trees to see if he can find a clue to the monster's lairCombat? roleplay - my character focuses the skeleton exclusively, as undead are abhorrent to his god of lifeYou can just play a videogame instead if you are not interesting in roleplaying games.
Anons, don't tell me you take food rations with you into the dungeons? The dungeons are already filled with plenty of monsters to eat. All you need to bring is some salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
>>96837135Philosophical question the first thing to consider is what exactly you mean by this being a philosophical question. You can probably answer that with just a few thousand well thought out words. Then once we know what it is you're really looking for here, the answer is almost certainly going to be heavily dependent on EXACTLY how magic works in the setting. As in you're going to have to describe that in far more detail than Sanderson does. Now if you really only mean in practical RPG terms then, well, the devil's still in the details. The real bridge is actually there, which might make the trap easier to spot. But "the moment it's touched", by what? A falling leaf? A bird trying to land?An illusion is just an illusion, which might make it easier to spot. But at the same time someone who isn't paying a lot of attention might not notice the leaves on the stream below going right through the bridge supports. Or will the illusion automatically cover all such too? Again, the devil's in the details. Possibly even the details not of the setting, but of the rules.
>adventurers arrive at a neutral or allied city >it’s some kind of communist solarpunk utopia every single time>he beats you over the head about it every single timeHow does he not get sick of doing this?
>>96837275The problem WotC is always going to run into is that an Int-based class that can make illusions, control minds, and maybe throws out some force bolts or telekinesis, is literally just a worse Wizard. Making a Psion class that was actually distinct from the Wizard would basically require gutting the Wizard's spell list.
alright bros how can i tactfully and tastefully cuck the powergaming wizard in the party. smack him down a peg or two, or whatever.
>>96837872The other thing you can do is have out-of-combat RP end up affecting the tactical and strategic options available in subsequent combats. One way I've seen it done is to give the party a set list of "lair actions" that they can pick from at the start of each round, with the list being populated based on the allies and enemies they've made.
So now that about a year has passed, how does everyone feel about 5.5e?
>>96838243mild net positive even though its an obvious cash grab
>>96838184That's the problem of tying casting scores to specific classes rather than making them specific to the spells where it makes sense they would be used.
>>96835322Should a face at minimum look this charming and approachable on the surface?
>>96838131>solarpunk utopia
>>96838131watching brendan lee mulligan and being surprised by retarded shit is like jumping in the sea and being surprised you got wet
>>96838243Still glad I decided to rewrite the system myself instead of engaging with their slop.
I need advice for making a campaign and one of my players is obsessed with lovecraftian shit and hates the idea of purely happy endings, he just loves depression central and hates heroic fantasy...like how am I supposed to cater someone like this? The other 3 are sane people btw and are ok with my plots but this one specifically is just some eastern european depression spiral man
>>96838025>Trying to cook and eat souls and spiritsThe consumption of souls put you in the same bracket as every other criminal necromancer and warrants being petrified and buried.
>>96839668My first thought is to focus the campaign around access to another plane full of some revolutionary or world-changing resource that could be used to make a utopia, but said realm is also full of some sort of cosmic horror that is spawning armies of monsters, mutating wildlife, driving people crazy, etc.And so the goal of the campaign likely becomes sealing off that realm. Basically one of those typical fantasy endings where defeating the villain also involves most of the magic of the fantasy world leaving in the process. That draws on typical fantasy tropes, but allows you to have a lovecraft style twist where the source of the magic is paired with something inherently sinister, and so the safe option is to cut all of it off.
>>96835311Do you use your own gods, mythological gods, or the gods from the game?
>Party fought a guy who turned into a monster and kept downing our Martials>Party fought a demon who kept downing our Martials>Party fought another demon who kept downing our MartialsThat's it, I'm buying these scrubs some fucking items so they stop going down. Can't keep relying on our Bard for crutchesWe have a Hexblade Warlock, an Open Hand Monk and a Tempest Cleric. Our Warlock is a 15 year old who's being protected by a Fey Wolf who got mad at us for allowing her to get no-diffed so badly he had to take control of her so I'm thinking of getting them the Plate Of Knight's Fellowship so they have a bodyguard of sorts. Can't decide if the Monk and Cleric should get either armor or a weapon. The Monk has the Manslayer sword but that's situational and the Cleric just has a mace as far as I remember
>>96838131I dont know the guy or anything but just gonna ask based on this post. Are all enemy/hostile cities capitalists?
>>96840463>downing our martials>bard, warlock, cleric, monkWhat martials? The closest one is the Monk and that's a class which is notorious for running in alone and getting knocked out. Also, why are you relying on the Bard for keeping people up when you've also got a Cleric?>the Cleric just has a maceWhy? A tempest Cleric can use a warhammer.
>>96840463Whats the build/stats on the Warlock?
>>96840463martial? only one of them is a martial and it's basically a crystal cannon.
The Mystic is the best a psion has ever looked, it just needed some tweaking.
>>96840767yeah but effort
>>96835311roleplay and doing funny voices is my favourite part of RPGs so I tend to gravitate towards being the face(and playing support characters exclusively), so I don't know if I've ever played a character with less than 14 cha.

Plus side the gnome and Puss are clearly experienced roleplayers who know their characters, but holy hell.

I feel like my GM took pity on us and let us win against a big monster at the end of the session.
>>96841035Feels bad man. I've had several DMs fudge dice rolls at crucial moments in the past and players can always tell. That's why I roll in the open when I DM.
