At what point do you realize that nobody is going to play the less popular stuff you have in your social circles and area and you just have to get rid of them?

Do you just hang on to them anyways like a collector or just sell them off?
>>

Can't relate.

In my experience, if you're willing to run a game then you can choose whatever system you want.
>>
>>96841736

Youre the DM, you choose the game.
If your players refuse to move on from a single system then its time to find new players.
>>

Ive played every game ive ever bought
>>

Can't relate, I have a great online group and we've been playing for years.
>>
>>96841866
>>96841898
Yeah but the players in my area only want to play 5e.
>>96842283
Lucky you.
>>96842945
I should start an online group. Any advice?

>players in my area only want to play 5e
I find it hard to believe
I can believe no one wants to commit to a lengthy campaign that is not 5e because they aren't sure they'll like it

have you tried
>hey guys, there this game I really want to try out, who wants to join me for a oneshot or a 3-5 session adventure?
you can run the same oneshot for several different groups and chances are you'll end up with enough players wiling to start a more lengthy adventure
>>
>>96841736
While I don't doubt that if you asked your local guy who is already in 3 weekly 5e games isn't going to jump at the chance to play another system, I also don't believe for a second that you've actually really tried.

Have you actually read and learned those other systems? Are you willing to teach and run them? Have you seriously engaged with other RPG hobbyists about actually running and playing those games? I don't mean saying "I'm thinking about maybe running this is people are interested or whatever, but maybe not" You have to have really started making an effort and promises you intend to keep. Right now it sounds like you gave up before you ever started and you expect people to feel sorry for you and validate your inaction.

>I find it hard to believe
I must have bad luck then.
>I can believe no one wants to commit to a lengthy campaign that is not 5e because they aren't sure they'll like it
That might be the case.
>hey guys, there this game I really want to try out, who wants to join me for a oneshot or a 3-5 session adventure?
No I haven't at most I've asked on an LGS Discord server if anyone is interested in trying some GURPS campaigns and got no responses.
>Have you actually read and learned those other systems?
It is genuinely hard for me to read and learn the systems because nobody is interested in them. I was hoping for responses in the local area but managed to get nothing and just lost motivation to learn the systems.
>>

usually if you want to play something specific that is not D&D you need to run it yourself and introduce players into it
normally I would recommend making sure you know the basic rules and have a oneshot adventure ready on your hands (quickstarts are made specifically for this), and making a no bullshit pitch about looking for players for a ready adventure
>GURPS
however in your case it seems you want to be the one who is introduced
you need to find an already established experienced GURPS group so if there isn't one you already know locally just settle for online and search on GURPS related resources specifically
>>
>>96841736
The books don't go bad or expire dude. You're probably going to get at best 48 games a year with a weekly group. Some people manage more but be realistic about it.
The upside is you're probably going to be alive for a while so there's time. Likely decades.

Like have a solo game with myself first?
>however in your case it seems you want to be the one who is introduced
I actually saw a good number of TTRPG books at the thrift store when I was looking for new clothes.
Genesys, Basic Roleplaying Universal game engine, Dungeon Fantasy, and a good number of GURPS books. They were being priced around 30-60 Canadian dollars a piece so I snatched them up.
It is how I acquired the alternative to DnD 5e books I have right now.
That was a long time ago though.
>>96845566
>>96845576
I've played 5e though. I just wanted to try different systems.
>>
>>96846005
>Like have a solo game with myself first?
what I meant is that you will have to do the GM'ing
>>
>>96846317
>what I meant is that you will have to do the GM'ing
I understood that at the beginning. Got no responses when I put out the request for players. Which is why I kind of lost motivation to read and learn.

Generally how are online TTRPG communities?
>>
A book does not take up much space, nor has it any upkeep cost. Why would you need to sell a book just because you don't use what's written inside?
>>
>>96848381
>Got no responses
Because your pitch should read like you are ready to GM the game tomorrow, you are just giving a two weeks notice for the players to sort out schedule

Make curious players understand they just need to show up, and you will do the heavy lifting, explain the basic resolution mechanics, explain chargen and/or provide pregens, etc.
Then you will find players

Naturally you should be ready to deliver on your promise.

If you can't be bothered to put in the work, well then you don't want to play the new system bad enough, and I'm no longer interested in your whining.

Sorry for the harsh words, kid, but that's how it is
>>
>>96848381
>Got no responses when I put out the request for players.
Where are you putting out a request for players?

I've found my last few games through my university rpg club and literally anyone who puts their hand up to run a game has a full group of players immediately, no matter what system they're running. It could literally be your shitty homebrewed OSR heartbreaker and you'd have people willing to give it a shot.
>>
>>96843406
>I should start an online group. Any advice?
Get ready to shop around a lot and don't let that discourage you. Any more, the better way to recruit seems to be on large, hobby-adjacent discords.
>>
>>96849552
Maybe you're right.
>>96849592
I can try to make my request for curious GURPS players more enticing, but I don't want to sound like a Billy Mays knock-off.
>>96849718
>Where are you putting out a request for players?
In the local LGS' discord channel's "looking for players" channel.
>>96849790
Thanks anon.
>>
>>96852420
>In the local LGS' discord channel's "looking for players" channel.
That might be your problem if it's not active enough or mostly full of people just into tcgs.
>>
>>96853385
>That might be your problem if it's not active enough or mostly full of people just into tcgs.
It is mostly people into the Warhammers and tcgs so you might be right.
>>
>>96841736
I hang onto them. Sometimes in case they become useful other times as lessons to be more wise about my money. A lesson I still need to learn.
