Tau. In a world where almost everybody is using 10,000 year old relics (or older) the Tau are the only faction whose stuff actually feels new and polished. Plus, I'm a sucker for small, sleek, high-tech factions with an emphasis on robotics (Tri-Tachyon Corporation in Starsector, Caldari State in Eve Online, Corpus from Warframe, etc.)

It’d be a good fake if it wasn’t real. With James Workshop hinting at more stuff for the Ultramarines in those reveal articles, it wouldn’t surprise me that something based on them retaking the 500 is happening.

Asked in the other thread but I'll ask again here.
What is the "playstyle" of each army? Like is there an easy to read synopsis/comparison/summary of all the armies and what they act like in an actual game?
>>
Any ideas on what I can do to make Skaven Wracks?
>>
>>96868841
...Put the wrack mask on them?
>>
>>96868782
Detachments determine the playstyle in 10th edition, and often even have the units they synergize with the most on mentioned in them. Unfortunately you’ll have to do some granular reading unless someone can really help you.
>>
>>96868399
That's outdated lore that was retconned in 6th ED. The T'au developed the Slipstream from reverse engineering Warp drives captured during the Damocles Crusade.
>>
>>96868966
>"back in the day you"
>That's outdated
You don't say?
>>
>>96868782
What this guy >>96868935 said, but if your first thought is about “play style” then you need to take a step back and try to detox from mtg. It’s polluting your viewpoint. Flavor and playstyle do not have to be the same thing, and rolling dice in melee is the same experience in rolling dice making shooting attacks. Building an army is not like buying a deck, it’s a creative outlet that takes a lot of time and has a learning and skill building aspect. So pick the army you think is coolest.

But if you can’t let go, buy some shitty painted models off eBay for cheap to play with. Honestly I recommend this either way, they are good for practicing on if you have decision/painters paralysis like me.
>>
>>96869086
This isn't true at all

Despite that, just buying the army you think looks coolest isn't bad advice
>>
>>96868987
People still think it's canon, so it's worth saying.

>reading Godblight
>Gulliman is actively trying to discern whether the Emperor is a god and asks a Eldar Farseer about it
>says Faith is unlike sorcery or psychic powers, and can make a god of you whether you want it to or not
Well that settles the debate of Big E’s godhood in my mind, though I may be speaking too soon. Also Gulliman almost summoning a Lord of Change onto his ship for a laugh was funny. Did you really need to tempt a greater demon to tell you that Mortarion was gonna try and lure you into a trap and kill you with a disease?
>>
>>96869158
Rules aren’t as flavorful as they once were, in truth though, playing like the lore is always more up to you than anything else. Tournament lists are always the most optimal “this list wins the most” without regard for how things are organized in the setting. Detachments are supposed to supplement this, the Librarius Conclaves gives a lot of enhancements and buffs for a Space Marine list with lots of Librarians.
>>
>>96869257
We have been over this.

Why? The Emperor is near-ascension into a warp god himself when he dies, why wouldn't the Tau get a similar thing for their own ideology?
>>
>>96870585
That's a completely different fucking thing you fucking imbecile.
Tau have next to no warp presence, certainly not enough to create one a warp entity. And it's fucking terrible fucking writing to say it's all the auxiliary species that believed hard enough in a concept to spawn a warp god.
There is literally zero reason for it to exist. It was just a terrible BL writer writing themselves into a corner and had to pull a literal fucking deus ex machina ending.
It cheapens the tau to just another faction hiding behind a god now. Like I said, it's the literal manifestation of their plot armour because they should have been wiped out so many fucking times before. More and more GW is adding stupid bullshit that just proves tau themselves were a mistake to add to the setting.
>>
>>96870598
>Tau have next to no warp presence
Their auxillaries do

>And it's fucking terrible fucking writing to say it's all the auxiliary species that believed hard enough in a concept to spawn a warp god.
Why would that be terrible writing? It's enough to get the Emperor to ascend.

Change/ambition is not an emotion
Obsession/excess is not an emotion

Rage is, EZ
Nurgle gets summarized in the widest variety of ways, most of them are not emotions, but if you wanna go with despair, sure, emotion
>>
>>96870599
Jesus you're fucking stupid.
The Emperor is directly worshipped as a god. And fed a thousand psykers a day to keep his power up.
The Tau do not worship the Greater Good. It's a philosophy, not a religion. And treating it like one shows how fucking stupid the writers are. And you.
>>
>>96864232
>Which faction has the best aesthetic?
Destiny was so powerful that it overtook 40k and made Votann so I must bend my knees and kneel before them. This means I must acknowledge their aesthetic as superior to 40k native designs too.
>>
>>96870604
>The Emperor is directly worshipped as a god
So is the Tau'va.

>The Tau do not worship the Greater Good.
But their auxillaries do. That's the point. The Tau may have been secular but they didn't understand that their auxillaries who are more inclined towards religion would turn it into one. They ran into the same thing the Emperor did. You can try to stop humans from being religious, but they'll just turn the thing you taught them to do instead into a new religion.

Trying to make it a parallel to the Emperor is fucking stupid. Beyond fucking stupid.
It just highlights how fucking retarded BL writers are.

Hey, T'au retard here, hello, hi. The T'au'va Goddess was "birthed" during the 4th Sphere expansion. The Numenar Point Tragedy was an Ethereal false flag. They gathered their most faithful warp sensitive auxiliaries and knowingly mass fired their warp engines to sacrifice them in a mass ritual. The gambit was a proof of concept from the Ethereal caste to see if the integration and indoctrination of their amassed auxiliaries could be used as an Immaterial substrate to "spark" the T'au Warp entity into life via the mass sacrifice of the 4th Sphere auxiliaries to hostile warp entities. Basically the combined death knell of the auxiliaries crying out to the "Greater Good" as they were Event Horizoned jumped the T'au'va Warp Entity into action. The appearance of the T'au'va Goddess is confirmed to the Ethreals making the "Numenar Point Tragedy" a successful black op.

This is ultimately an Eldar psychological operation, reverse engineering their knowledge of their fall/birth of Slaanesh to attempt to create a new Warp Entity to challenge Slaanesh and regain control of the final Crone Sword. The T'au are an Eldar bioweapon race, in the same vein as themselves and the orks, with the Ethereal being the fifth column/backdoor of Eldar control over the T'au. Eldar can bonesing T'au Ethereal "diamond shaped bone ridge" and Ethereal control the other castes via their grafted Q'oorl pheremone control system. The "Greater Good" ideology is an Eldar psyop delivered to the galactic masses via their T'au bioweapon as a way to induce a calm to the "Sea of Souls" by enforcing a warp neutral way of life (Tau'va) onto the warp sensitive species of the galaxy.

so necrons didnt build their own tech and can only really maintain it but can't truly fix it if it breaks?
>>
>>96870684
Usually they can fix it, but some tomb worlds are in a much worse state than others. The only thing they can't do is revive a truly dead necron, rarely when a necron dies their backup system doesn't work properly and their engram is deleted instead of saved. Even if the Necrons rebuilt their body, there'd be no 'mind' to put in them. While the Necrons actually do have the tech to put AI in them, there's a huge taboo against doing so.

We also have no instances of non-Warp gods, "god" in 40k is ultimately any sufficiently large Warp-entity, be it a Chaos God, Gork/Mork, Eldar Gods or even Hivemind which has been repeatedly compared to a God in terms of sheer bulk
That said I do not inherently buy the "Faith powers are not connected to the Warp" bit in its entirely, just because they circumvent Pylon shit doesn't mean they're not Warp-based and don't interact with the Warp
And furthermore, even if I were to accept that they're their own entire thing... That'd only be worse for the setting, honestly? Isolated pockets of worldbuilding are boring, its when things come into interplay when things get interesting

My guess is that they were imitating Eldar as there was a lot of trade between humans and xenos during that time period, and the Eldar were the dominant power throughout the DAoT. Some of the Imperial machines left over from the DAoT even have Eldar runes.

Eldar lasers are functionally identical to Imperial ones, just more sophisticated. Eldar fusion guns also have a striking resemblance to Imperial meltaguns with the ribbed fuel flask and muzzle grill. Would not put it past DAoT humans to copy some of their technology from the Eldar.

My guess is that they pissed the fuck off, but attempt to buy off officials and use tons of espionage and underhanded tactics. They don't want to risk damaging an STC in a major open war. That would be the last case scenario, even if it is most likely to happen.

I remember in one book veteran space marines were so good that they were shooting grenades and mortar shells out of the sky like it was nothing, yet in another, they were only slightly more accurate than the guardsmen they were fighting next to, and reacted to grenades like anyone else (they'd see it when it landed then toss it back to their foes). Which depiction is more accurate for the average marine?
>>
>>96879947
What marines can and can't do vary form story to story, author to author. And no, there's no specific "word of god" anywhere telling you which one of those is actually correct.

A marine should pull the pin from a grenade, eat the grenade, throw you the pin and you be the one who dies.

>>96881830
Oh no, I'm going to build them all. I have some conversion ideas for using the extra bodies you get in the boxes that will bring me up pretty close to 2,000 points, and then I'll add in probably a Wave Serpent full of Fire Draogns and I'll be off to the races.

I do have some other projects I want to make progress on first. When they announced the Harlequin Patrol I wasn't going to get one until next year, but then it turned out to be a FOMO box so I had to go all in now

Hobby knives are best for shaving off plastic, like if something almost fits but you need to shave off a bit, test fit, shave off a bit, etc. to get it right, that's a hobby knife job.

If you're like, cutting off an arm at the elbow or something, then yeah a hobby saw will work a lot better for you

Conscripts are not a standard IG unit, but, well, conscripted locals press-ganged into service to defend their world on top of the PDF and any Guard regiments sent in. Sometimes they might be sent to other planets if the need is dire (I think one of the Eisenhorn novels has a few regiments raised in a rush for a nearby campaign, then returned home). Effectively they took the 3e Eye of Terror campaign Whiteshield unit and put them into 3.5e Codex: IG as a generic IG unit.

I was iffy on whether or not it was real until somebody pointed out that it seems to match the style of the Krieg Combat Patrol, with the number of miniatures down in a line halfway up the Warhammer logo. OK mathlet and hobbylet. Let's break this down

I didn't pay MSRP for any of them, I got them for around 145 each.

If I were to buy all of those models separately from Amazon let's see what they would cost
Troupe - 40.80$
Skyweavers - 51$
Starweaver - 42$
Voidweavers - 42$
Solitaire - 34.13$
Total - 209.93

So the discount on the first box came to 64.93$. Which is, in my opinion, a pretty good discount
But let's say I'm scared of converting so I just threw the second Solitaire in the garbage. In that case the total cost of a troupe, a set of Skyweavers, and two Star/voidweavers comes to 175.80$ Meaning that the discount on the second box, and indeed all subsequent boxes, is still 30 dollars. Which isn't a bad discount for such core models that I'm probably going to use all of!

But I don't need to throw away the second and third Solitaires. I can use their bodies as the basis of conversions for more basic Troupes, or Unique Troupe Masters just using the bits I get from the other models in the kit.

Quite simply, buying three boxes was the shrewdest financial move a clown enthusiast can make!

I couldn't justify a fourth, because at that point you have so many star/voidweavers you're basically committing to running a fully mechanized infantry list. Which I don't think is the direction I'd want to take my army. Which is why I only bought three.

Tau are more advanced in some ways and less advanced in others. Taau have hover everything, but the Imperium has guns so big the Tau don't understand how they were made. The Tau have drones, the Imperium has (relatively) safe Warp travel.

The big thing, tho, is that the Tau understand their own technology and can easily replicate it. Which isn't true of the Imperium. The Tau are also very inventive and endlessly iterate on their technology, always striving to improve it. Which, once again, isn't true of the Imperium.

That's the whole thing about the Tau, they have a lot of potential that the Imperium doesn't.
>>
>>96882125
I say I don't buy named characters because I want to be total /mydudes/ and that is a part of it. But another big part is that GW likes to build Christmas boxes around named characters and if they do one for one of my armies I'd like to be able to get full value out of it.
>>
>>96881916
Because there's no conscript box you can just buy.
They've simultaneously destroyed all structure in the guard army list, and all flexibility at the same time. It really bums me out because building lists used to be fun and used to capture my imagination but now its just fucking boring and uninspiring.

Hopefully Harlies will get a named character, a mounted HQ, a heavy weapons infantry unit, and a centerpiece like an Avatar of Cegorach next edition.
>>
>>96882148
>Neither are scions
Scions are literally a special forces regiment that Munitorum (the organization in charge of the Imperial Guard) sends to war zones to operate within and alongside regiments the same way as commissars, abhuman regiments, etc. Scions are an established unit. Conscripts are not. They're the whiteshields, hive limitia, whatever that's whipped together on location from available forces. There are no conscript regiments being fielded as part of the wider organization.
>>
>>96882221
They are not standard imperial guard units, which is your entire argument dumbass.
>They're not established units
Literally does not matter. Totally irrelevant to whether they can be in an army book. Yet you cite it as if its some established rule. You're just post hoc rationalizing a business decision.
