Why do wizards wear robes?
>>
Do you prefer X or Y for your Z?
Is X or Y better?
Is X overrated?
X is an overlooked Y for Z.
Why do X's do Y?

i dunno, probably because the archetype was heavily influenced by merlin who in turn was based on pagan druids and dressed how they dressed?

that or influence from arabic alchemists. you know what could probably answer this for you easier and faster? a google search
>>
>>96864326
Because they're confortable clothes. That's literally it. They could wear other civillian clothes like peasant garbs meant for manual labour but why would they? Robes are better for them.
>>
>>96864341
I've done a bit of that and also watched some videos and yes, Merlin in old paintings did indeed wear robes but then that begs the question why Merlin was depicted wearing robes.

We know very little of the druids and what they wore as far as I'm aware. Unfortunately they weren't very well documented.
>>
>>96864376
Also part of the reasoning seems to be that in Western Europe, education was completely tied at the hip to the church and in England, teachers were required by law to be members of the church.

Wizards are associated with sage, as are sorcerers associated with heretical religious orders like the Gnostics, Manicheists, or Baphomet worshippers. Who would adorn religion garb which would be robes.

Magic itself has its roots in basically just being considered the worship of other Gods, which is how the ancient Jews used the term magic which obviously carried over to Christianity. Any power than came from a not Jewish god was demonic and magic.

That being said it doesn't explain why religious groups throughout history traditionally wear robes. I guess the simple explanation is Roman Christianity and the fact that Romans wore robes.

But the garb of a typical Wizard doesn't exactly look Greco-Roman to me, or maybe I'm blind to the obvious ancient clothes they're clearly inspired by.
>>
>>96864326
It's based on traditional academic dress.
>>

>That being said it doesn't explain why religious groups throughout history traditionally wear robes
It's a comfortable cloth that can also be made very fancy, and is not your regular working attire of the regular plebs.

a robe is just a long tunic and a tunic is just a rectangle. if you need clothes its hard to find something faster, easier, cheaper or more efficient than that. why would ancient people all over the world wear them? why would they ever not?

>in England, teachers were required by law to be members of the church

The law in the early 17th century stated teachers needed a license from the diocesan bishop. That law didn't state they had to be members of the Church of England, they just needed the bishops approval even if that was tantamount to being a member of the CoE and thereby having a "right understanding of God's true Religion".

Bbeing a member of the CoE is not the same as being a clergyman. For example, women have been allowed as members of the CoE for centuries but have only been ordained in England since 1985. As not clergy, they didn't have to wear clerical garb.

The wearing of gowns is an academic tradition that followed from a medieval tradition for robes in general. It's not because teachers had to be clergy and wear clerical robes because they didn't have to be clergy, and robes were out of fashion by the 17th century.
>>
It's only very recently that we've dealt away with long robes and big hats as symbols of intellectual prestige. Now it's just pretentious. Unless your hair is already big, like Einstein.

Something sad about the total loss of class and role uniforms. No one wears anything except business suits, and even that feels like it's going to fade or at least be made more casual.
You should have to wear a different huge hat depending on your job.

This. Dress like you are the protagonist of your own story, just make sure that whatever you wear is actually of decent quality material and doesn't look like you got it at Spirit of Halloween.

I unironically wear a costume jacket during the fall as my default outerwear, because its warm and breaks the wind and it has pockets so fuck you its a real jacket. I consistently get complimented on it.

As long as its practical and looks good, you can wear pretty much anything. The idea that you MUST wear the tshirt and jeans or you MUST be dressed in business casual and those are the only two types of fashion men are allowed to have is reductive as fuck.

That's not even remotely true - look at "blue collar" vs "white collar", look at people who wear suits to work versus shirt sleeves, or people who wear jeans and a tshirt.

Also, people in the right industries can usually tell a banker's suit from a lawyer's for a government bureaucrat's.

Dress like you want, but dressing unusually sends signals to those around you.

I wore a skirt once as part of a costume, and now I love wearing skirts during the summer, since they're so much cooler. But even though you can buy "masculine" skirts, wearing a skirt or dress as a man still sends a signal to those around you.

Similarly, wearing robes around town sends a signal to those around you, and that signal isn't "robes are comfy".

Because Gandalf. He was a traveller, so the long robes keep him cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Robes are also associated with scholarly pursuits. The broad hat kept him sage from the sun and weather, too. Plus the staff helped check the depth of rivers to help with safe crossing.

>>
>Free Flowing
Wizards need plenty of movement to cast, even more so than regular pants and a shirt. If they could be naked, they would.
>Status
Having a flowing, finely crafted robe is a sign of power and status. Keeping it clean over long adventurers with magic alone takes expertise. When you are in towns or at royal events, they can fit in as well as someone in a suit. Even in Tolkien's world, wizards of certain robe colors were more powerful.
>Low Charisma
Wizards are smart and all, but they aren't fashion geniuses. Just by wearing something one color and easy, they can avoid self conscious worries.
>Age of most wizards
Older folks feel more comfortable in flowing, baggy clothes, often helping their blood flow and being easy to put on in the morning without having to buckle a million clips.

In all, wizards and robes go together very naturally, hence the logic behind them typically wearing the pieces.

Robes obfuscate the somatic components of spellcasting, allowing wizards to keep others from stealing their spells. One big piece of clothing that covers your entire body is also easier and less time consuming to enchant than to enchant a shirt and pants individually. Finally, any clothes you can fall asleep in are very important for people who don't keep consistent schedules because they work through all hours of the night studying the arcane.

Because they're comfy.
The more historical answer is that robes were what rich people wore once upon a time in the high medieval era. Because fabrics were expensive, so wearing a lot of it showed your wealth. Why is that relevant? Well, education was something only rich people got to indulge in... and in those days, sorcery was not distinct from education.
>>
>>96864497
The reason you don't walk around in robes is because a costume like that would literally cost you about 800 - 1,200 US dollars... because that's a lot of fabric and there are no manufacturing processes in place to create garments of such designs, so you'd need to hire someone to make it.
