Sup /tg/. I come here tonight to present you with The Realm of Yolmi.I first learned about this book years ago while reading the Critonomicon thread on one of the arhives, from this post >>24433917.>I hate to break this to you, OP but this is not the true RPG hunt.>The true all consuming RPG hunt, is the hunt for an intact copy of Realm of Yolmi. This fabled book has gained near legendary status as one of the strangest RPGs ever written. As far as I know, there are no scans. When it came out in 1977, the book had a very small circulation and seeing as it was printed literally on printer paper and bound with plastic rings it should come as no small surprise that very few copies have survived. I chalked it up as a neat little oddity, set an ebay alert, and forgot about it. Just last year a seller with an intact copy posted a listing there, then I shat bricks as I remembered what the hell I was looking at. I managed to be the lucky soul to buy it from him, and then I proceeded to be a piece of shit as I procrastinated fixing my printer and scanning it.Today I finally took 30 minutes to finally troubleshoot my printer, and then spent the next few hours in between handing out candy digitizing this old tome. Did a page check of the PDF and found pages I was missing, also finding out that the book skips page 32 due to a typo, going straight from page 31 to page 33. Regardless, here is the complete work as a searchable PDF for your amusement and bewilderment. The text may not be entirely accurate due to OCR errors. I'll mirror it on the Internet Archive shortly.https://files.catbox.moe/nlvjpv.pdfHappy Halloween, /tg/.
>>96883422Thanks anon. I've never heard of this before, but you're a real one for making it available. Thank you, king.
Ah yes, the archetypal classes of every good sci-fi RPG>soldier>scientist>fly-catcherAnd the elite branch of fly-catchers are also psychics.
>>96883422Dear diary, today OP was a pretty cool guy.
>>96883422>procrastinated a year to fix [device]>took 30 minutesthis is so real it hurts
Some interesting monsters in this book.

Thank you

>>96883422you re the best anon.
Internet Archive Mirror: https://archive.org/details/the-realm-of-yolmi. The viewer is really good for it since it displays as a two-page document that automatically separates the first and last pages front and back covers, which makes it feel like you're reading the original ring-bound book. Also it turns out that Internet Archive automatically converted it into some jpgs, which means I can now "storytime" it ITT. Super neat since I didn't want to figure out how to do that on my own, especially if it meant downloading random programs.>>96883937It'd be pretty strange to hoax such an obscure old book, but I suppose weirder things have happened. I could drop a link to the ebay listing if you'd like since that's still up, but it looks like at some point ebay changed how they handle archived listings and no longer retain item descriptions. Bummer. For now here's the disassembled book, my printer, the piece of paper I wrote the note in, and some leftover halloween candy I didn't hand out.
>>96883422Hmm, turns out the jp2 file extension Internet Archive convert their pdfs to isn't just a renamed jpg, nor is it supported by 4chan, so I had to download a program to convert everything anyway.Well, book dump/"storytime" I guess.

Wonder if I'll ever get to run a oneshot in this system as a joke.
>>96886022In Japanese works, when a name is needed for an American, the first consonants are often switched around to make them more interesting. I can't cite an example off the top of my head but I've seen that a number of times.>Blen Kack>Rarshal Mose >Wohn Jilliams>Wen GilsonI like the feel of these personally.
>>96883422What a cool guy
>>96886057honestly, how the fuck are the japanese supposed to pronounce these? They definitely sound made up but in a funny kids way which is good i guessThis just reminded me that once in uni, me and a group of friends when drunk decided to do something similar and cut our fist and last names in half switch them and paste them together and the result was hilarious
>>96884988>At all times game balance should be maintainedEarly RPGs are so quaint, it's adorableThe monsters are pretty awesome though, I especially like the politicians entry. Might use some of these in my current gonzo plane-hopping game.

So, why are they called fly-catchers?

>>96884919Maybe it's what you used already, but friendly advice for being a cool OP: ImageMagick is by far the best way to do things like mass file format conversions. It takes a little learning since it's a command-line program for Linux nerds but it can automate more complicated operations than anything else and finishes in seconds.
>>96887210>It takes a little learning since it's a command-line program for Linux nerdsEvery time I get the brave idea that not all modern UI/UX designers are subhuman trash, I get punished for it almost instantly. As I age I grow more and more convinced that text terminal is the pinnacle of UI and it was all downhill from there.
>>96886057>>96886022
>>96884919>the jp2 file extensionAh yes, JPEG2000, an extension of JPEG beloved of serious libraries for archival work (because it compresses really small in non-lossy mode). Not popular elsewhere because it was patent-encumbered for years, and is expensive to encode and (to a lesser extent) decode.

Today OP was a pretty cool guy.
>>96883422Anon you are so fucking lucky, not only did you get the rarest rpg of all but you got an intact copy. Massive respect. I'm the anon who bought a copy of Dawnfire from the sharethread and I got it scanned, been procrastinating making a thread about it but you've inspired me now
Thanks for preventing this from drifting into obscurity. For that alone I think you're a really great person.

What's the word for something like this, that's so old and so separated from what might be called the "norms" of such things that it is unashamedly weird and cringe, but in a good way? Where the writers would commit what we now call literary or mechanical sins, yet do so innocently?
